Bottoms Up in Belgium Seeking the High Points of the Low Lands Alec Le Sueur ISBN: 978 1 84953 247 1 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback January 2014 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Brussels and all those Eurocrats on the gravy train? It’s just so boring. Why, you can’t even name ten famous Belgians! Until 1993, Alec had never been to Belgium, so it came as some surprise when in August that year he found himself at the altar of a small church in Flanders, reciting wedding vows in Flemish. It was the start, for better or for worse, of a long relationship with this much maligned little country. He decided to put worldwide opinion to the test: is Belguim really as boring as people say it is? Immersing himself in Belgian culture, he discovers a country of contradictions, where Trappist monks make the best beer in the world and grown men partake in vertical archery and watch roosters sing (not necessarily at the same time). This colourful and eccentric jaunt is testament that Belgium isn’t just a load of waffle.

■ Also by the same author: The Hotel on the Roof of the World (ISBN: 978 1 84953 343 0), which has been translated into nine languages and has sold 30,000 copies over 3 editions. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: An Englishman’s attempt to uncover the hidden treasures of a much maligned country; Why Belgium has much more to offer than beer and Eurocrats; Just how boring can Belgium be and what lies behind the world-wide perception that there are no famous Belgians?

Alec Le Sueur has worked in luxury hotels in London, St Tropez and Paris, as well as a five-year stint at the infamous Holiday Inn Lhasa, Tibet, where he met his Belgian wife. Based in Jersey, Alec gives frequent talks on the subjects of his books and has written for Food & Wine magazine and Thomas Cook Travel.

‘Read this book if you have ever loved and lost... It will inspire you to find a path through loss and come out the other end.' Monique Roffey, author of With the Kisses of his Mouth

... fearlessness has got nothing to do with being unafraid. It’s about doing things anyway, getting on with it, living, whether you’re afraid or not... Courage is about being who you are with your whole heart. Fuzzy-haired, neurotic, cello-playing Catrina is devastated when her lover, Jack, leaves her to go surfing on the other side of the world. Trapped in a dead-end job and torn by his departure, Catrina dreams of running away. But how do you run away when you’re flat broke? Luckily, her friend Andrew comes up with a plan: they’ll get an old van, turn it into a camper and busk their way from Norway to Portugal, via the midnight sun. When Andrew is killed in a tragic accident Catrina decides to go it alone, with disastrous consequences. Until her experiences on the road gradually teach her the real meaning of love, courage and above all else, the importance of following her dreams. This is an unforgettable story of a journey like no other – a deeply emotional and inspirational debut by a unique storyteller.

Catrina Davies is based in Cornwall, where she surfs and plays the cello. She has performed at numerous festivals, including Glastonbury, and is recording her debut album. Photos by Mike Newman/Ocean-Image.com

A Short Ride in the Jungle The Ho Chi Minh Trail by Moped Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent ISBN: 978 1 84953 543 4 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback April 2014 Rights and Sales Territories: World

In spring 2013, adventurer Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent saddled up alone on her pink Honda C90 moped and set off from the cacophonous streets of Hanoi. From there she rode an epic 3,000 km through mud, deep sand, rivers and jungle on the Ho Chi Minh Trail through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Travelling with very little mechanical know-how, Antonia visited lost pre-Khmer ruins, met remote tribes in Laos, battled along Cambodia’s Mondulkiri Death Highway, and encountered some of the countless unexploded bombs that remain from the Vietnam War, seeing both the beauty and the great danger of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent, a veteran of ridiculous adventures in unfeasible vehicles, is co-author of the successful Tuk-Tuk to the Road. Her articles have appeared in Wanderlust, The Guardian, Adventure Journal (USA), Verge (Canada) and Motorcycle Monthly, and she’s also a regular speaker on the adventure travel circuit, speaking at the RGS, Adventure Travel Show and Wilderness Lectures.

4

■ Traversing the Ho Chi Minh Trail by motorbike has become very popular in the last decade, exemplified by Top Gear’s Vietnam special. ■ The Honda C90 is a favourite of motorbike fans with millions of devotees the world over. ■ The author hopes to raise awareness of the vital work carried out by the Mines Advisory Group in Vietnam and beyond. ■ www.theitinerant.co.uk Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Top tips for motorcycling the iconic Ho Chi Minh Trail; A history of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, fast being swallowed up by modern development; Why years aer the war, Vietnam is still contaminated with UXOs that kill hundreds of people each year.

Fragrant Heart A Tale of Love and Food in South-East Asia Miranda Davies ISBN: 978 1 84953 558 8 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback Black and white illustrations May 2014 Rights and Sales Territories: World

We buy food we can point to. We stalk the streets until rush hour and wait for the little hatches to open in the sides of restaurants. From the steamy openings, cooks in overalls sell jiaozi (dumplings) and bowls of thick, sticky, white congee – an unholy cross between soup and porridge. Baozi, steamed white buns, are light as air. I buy them filled with water spinach and nettle – delicious dipped in sharp, black Chinese vinegar. In 2008, Miranda and her partner set off for one last big adventure before settling down. They chose to travel through South-East Asia. All did not go to plan: Asian flu, falling off boats and the general chaos of a life abroad challenged them at every step, and yet, in the midst of it all, they fell in love with the culture and culinary delights of China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. Fragrant Heart is an honest and witty account of falling in love: with food, with new experiences and with the person you want to be with for the rest of your life.

■ A comprehensive Bibliography and Asian Food Suppliers section at the end of the book allows keen cooks to learn more and start their own food journey. ■ Contains authentic recipes so readers can recreate Miranda’s food experiences for themselves. Perfect for book groups. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: A unique insight into South East Asia; The appeal of one last big adventure before settling down; Authentic recipes from far-flung places. Photos available. Author is available for interview.

Miranda Davies is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 4 Extra where she specialises in abridging books for radio and adapting them for dramatic serialisation. She lives in Wales with her husband and their two daughters.

A compelling and unforgettable encounter on the roof of the world… Hoping to reach Tibet aer a twenty-year obsession, Charlie Carroll travelled to China. At the end of the road known as the Friendship Highway, he met Charlie and recounted his extraordinary life story, exemplifying the hardship, resilience and hope of modern Tibetan life. Charlie Carroll is a writer, musician, teacher and traveller. He lives in Cornwall with his wife and their cat, Digby. Surf Mama Wilma Johnson ISBN: 978 1 84953 591 5 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback June 2014 Rights and Sales Territories: English language, UK, ROI, EU and Commonwealth excluding North America.

Wilma Johnson thought she knew what her life was; she was living on the west coast of Ireland with her surfer husband and three children, balancing the challenges of being an artist, wife and mother, when impulse and a deep desire to seize the day led her to move to Biarritz and become a surfer. The waters aren’t always calm and relationships aren’t always steady, but once she knows the euphoric feeling of catching the biggest wave of her life, it’s all worth it. Besides, she’s already gone from being a free-living, naturist performance artist to Earth Mother, so becoming a Surf Mama is just one more step – right? Wilma Johnson has a degree in fine art and was part of the Neo-Naturist performance art group, appearing throughout the 1980s in venues as diverse as the Royal Opera House and the Spanish Anarchist headquarters. She spent a year in Mexico, following the fiesta, painting in hotel rooms and drinking pulque with friends of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. She took up surfing at the age of 45 and moved to an art deco casino near Biarritz.

■ An inspiring memoir of a woman making a fresh start in midlife; will appeal to anyone who has ever dreamed of starting over. ■ Surfing is a consistently popular subject, and Wilma, now an expert surfer, writes about it with a beginner’s passion.

‘Surf Mama is an exceptional memoir… a highly inspiring, thoroughly enjoyable and heartily recommended book’ THECULTURALPICK.COM Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Giving up the rat race and moving abroad; Life as a naturist; Taking up a daring new hobby whatever your age. Photos available. Author is available for interview.

In 1894, Ruth Smythers, ‘Beloved wife of The Reverend L. D. Smythers’, wrote:

■ Will appeal to all those who bought Don’ts for Husbands 1913 and Don’ts for Wives 1913.

While sex is at best revolting and at worse rather painful, it has to be endured... One cardinal rule of marriage should never be forgotten: give little, give seldom and, above all, give grudgingly...

She didn’t intend to be amusing, but this brief treatise written for young brides is sidesplitting today and an eye-opener to how mores have changed in just over a century.

Welcome to Summersdale! As we enter our 24th year of trading we would like to look back on 2013 and celebrate another fantastic year for Summersdale, one that saw continued growth both locally and internationally. We have expanded our sales team, which has allowed us to increase our strength with both non-traditional high street retail chains and independent online gi retailers. Our fabulous PR team have secured stellar results for our books and authors across the national press as well as other media, including TV. Our editorial and design teams have been on fire this last year, preparing a broad range of wonderful books to add to our diverse 700-strong backlist, from highly researched serious titles to the witty and quirky, all beautifully designed and produced to the highest quality. 2014 continues in the same vein, kicking off with a ra of exciting new titles across the Gi and Humour, Travel, General Interest and Health genres. We present a wealth of books covering popular themes such as love, age and gardening. We have a host of jokes and poems, puzzles and prose, with a special focus on England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales amongst others. Our health list continues to grow with a range of easy to read, accessible titles to help with day-to-day challenges as well as special events. Travel writing continues to be one of our strengths, and this season we tantalise you with a variety of tales from the Far East, as well as reads from cooler climes. We really do have something for everyone. We’d like to extend our many thanks to all the writers and artists, the press and trade and everyone else who helps make Summersdale’s books so special.
