Letter From the President Joe Neal, Jr., 2009 Summerville Neighborhood Association President Dear Families, Friends, and Neighbors,
gracious hospitality, this Tour would not be possible.
Welcome to the 32nd annual Summerville Tour of Homes, a veritable heritage and history Tour of Augusta’s oldest and most prestigious homes. I am honored to call Summerville home and to serve as the President of our neighborhood association. I would like to personally thank and publicly recognize the hard work of our 2009 Summerville Tour of Homes Committee: Lisa McCollum, Meredith Newman and our Treasurer, Stuart Rayburn, all of whom have worked tirelessly to put this year’s Tour of Homes together. We also thank our many Tour Sponsors who advertised in the Autumn edition of the Summerville Post, Claffey Printing, and Mike Brown, who once again has stepped up to contribute to the public knowledge of architectural styles on display in this year’s Tour. Summerville, the most architecturally significant and eclectic of all neighborhoods, is the jewel of Augusta. She is a quaint village of homes filled with charm and character, where families know each other, know each other’s kids, and know each other’s pets (especially our dog Jack). Summerville is where generations of Augustans have grown up, called home, or returned home to invest in the restoration of grand estates or quaint cottages. Summerville is a community of residents, ranging from artists to businessmen, doctors to lawyers, from Fairmont style mansions to Craftsman style bungalows. Like many of us, I grew up in Summerville and have called it home most of my life, having lived in and been a part of restorations of early 20th century homes at 919 Heard Ave, 2232 McDowell St., 1323 Glenn Ave., and 2240 Kings Way. Serendipity and sentimentality abound in old homes, from the excitement and mystery of finding old coins and bottles hidden under a step in my father’s home on McDowell St. to a fleeting glimpse of 1920’s life while listening to Django Rhinehart in our home on Kings Way. So, it is with great fanfare, pride, and excitement that the Summerville Neighborhood Association Board of Directors presents to you, Friday October 23 through Sunday October 25, 2009, six delightful and historic houses on this year’s Tour – the homes of Brian and Lori Brittingham, George and Brigid Pursley, Randy Lambeth, Scott and Angie Benjamin, Mark and Sharon Lorenti, and Thane Plummer & Almira Vazdarjanova. The SNA Board is very grateful to these generous and hardworking homeowners, for without their
We are very excited this year to revive the romantic “Candle Light Tour” of homes, as well as a Summerville Tour kick-off party at the Partridge Inn, on Friday evening.
I would like to tip my hat to my predecessor, Mrs. Ginger Nicholson, who served our neighborhood honorably as vice president and president for several years prior to her resignation in July of this year. Ginger, we appreciate all that you did for your neighborhood, and thank you so much for your service to your community. I can assure you all that the Summerville torch has been passed, is in good hands, and we are ready to light the way to a brighter future for our neighborhood. SNA’s crime fighting efforts in the past year have resulted in the recruitment of approximately 50 block captain volunteers, and 40 Crime Watch signs have been installed by the Sheriff ’s Department after our successful April crime watch meeting. Active involvement of our residents has made a positive impact – the number of crimes has reduced and captured offenders have been brought to justice with the help of our DA and Judges. SNA needs active involvement on our Board and committees to continue to make a positive impact in our neighborhood. Please call me at 706-829-6229 or a Board member if you are interested in serving on a Board committee next year. There is an opportunity for service with SNA for anyone interested in active involvement. Fall elections will be held at our November meeting at the Partridge Inn, where there will be a cash bar and finger foods. Please attend and let your voice be heard! 2010 is going to be a great year for expanding the SNA membership, hosting social parties and charitable events, keeping up the “good fight” against crime, and improving the SNA website. Until then, welcome to Summerville and have Fun on the Tour! Joe Neal, Jr., President, SNA

Neighborhood Tour Kick-off Party A Kick-off Party will be held at the Partridge Inn on Friday, October 23, in the Summerville Room if completed at that time, or in the Ballroom. A cash bar will be set up and finger foods and appetizers will be provided by the Hotel. The hours will be 7 pm to 11 pm. One Complimentary Drink Coupon will be given to each guest participating in the Night Tour, not to exceed 100 coupons.
SNA Fall General Meeting and Elections November 19, 2009 @ 7:30 p.m – Partridge Inn SNA will hold its general meeting and will elect officers and a new board for a two year term beginning in 2010. Please attend and show your support for your neighborhood organization. We will have a cash bar and finger foods available. If you are interested in serving on the board or on a board committee, and being actively involved in SNA, please call our President, Joe Neal, Jr., at 706-829-6229 before the General Meeting.

Stop # 1– Tour Headquarters
The ASU Maxwell House Alumni Center 2339 McDowell Street
This high style example of Colonial Revival architecture was built as the home of Robert Jefferson Maxwell and his wife Vivian in 1917. The home was one of the last designs completed by H.T.E. Wendell, a prolif ic architect in Augusta from 1908-1918… The Maxwell family have long been generous benefactors of Augusta State University. Their estate left the home to the school in 1972. Renovations were begun in the early 1990's, only to be halted by the discovery of lead paint, subsequent law suits, and inflation. Work began again in 1998, and all of the frustration and hard work has finally paid off… (More details are available in the Tour Program which is available for purchase at vendors located on page 25 of the Post.)

The completed project added five new bathrooms to the main house, new plumbing and electrical systems, a finished attic, and a new kitchen… For the quality and scope of the restoration project, the Plummer family was awarded the 2007 Historic Augusta Preservation Award… (More details are available in the Tour Program which is available for purchase at vendors located on page 25 of the Post.)

Stop # 5 – The Home and Studio of
Artist Randy Lambeth, 1545 Whitney Street
An Augusta College Professor bought the home in the seventies for $17,000 and lived in a small portion of it while building his dream home in the country for retirement. Randy Lambeth later rented the upstairs for $60 dollars a month and did a lot of handiwork on the dilapidated house in trade for rent, for he was a budding and cash strapped artist… The artist’s paint drops on the floors of every room in the house attests that the whole place is used as an artist’s studio. He decorated his home with furniture from the alley and “objets trouve” (fr. found objects)… (More details are available in the Tour Program which is available for purchase at vendors located on page 25 of the Post.)

Stop # 7 – The Home of Lori and Brian Brittingham 1121 Monte Sano Avenue
When Lori & Brian Brittingham purchased this home in July 2007, they immediately began an extensive renovation and construction of a twostory addition on the back for a kitchen-family room and master suite… The home possibly dates from as early as 1883 and was originally a farm house owned by George B. Mountain. His son, George W. Mountain was an Augusta and Summerville physician in the 1890’s, maintaining an office in this house as well as one in downtown Augusta, and once used the dining room as his examination room… The Brittinghams both grew up in the neighborhood in old homes that required renovations which made it easy for them to embrace this home… (More details are available in the Tour Program which is available for purchase at vendors located on page 25 of the Post.)
