The Newman home blanketed in snow February 2010

Letter from the President Joe Neal, 2010 Summerville Neighborhood Association President Spring is here, so let us betake of her golden cup and drink! It is truly a time to feel and experience God’s great beauty and Life on this green earth in our lovely little village on the Hill. I am amazed every time I walk out the door at how beautiful our neighborhood is in the Spring. 2010 has been a historical year so far. Summerville has seen its first heavy snow in many years (see Newman home on front cover blanketed with snow), and we have had one of the longest winters on record. We also witnessed one of the greatest Masters our great city has ever hosted. The dogwoods, azaleas and trees were in full bloom as the practice rounds began and our family packed the truck for a trip to the beach, where we enjoyed spectacular weather but tuned into the television every afternoon at 3 pm. to watch one of the most exciting Masters golf tournaments of all time. I want to take this opportunity to thank the tremendous outpouring of support the Summerville community has extended towards our Neighborhood Association and new Board of Directors. We had the most members join SNA this winter than we have had in a very long time. I hope all of you who have joined or rejoined SNA have begun receiving our crime alerts that we have begun sending out on our new system. Jack Evans and Anthony Farkas, our IT expert board members, continue to build up our neighborhood association with their time and talent with the membership and crime watch databases. Please thank them the next time you see them in the neighborhood, for their service is invaluable to our organization. I also would like to thank my fellow board members for their energetic and active service on the Summerville board, for it takes many people to make our mission successful. Please extend me in welcoming our newest board member, Mike O’Neill, a banker with Wachovia, who lives with his wife and children on McDowell

2010 Tour of Homes The 2010 Summerville Tour of Homes is only 6 months away and all of the planning is underway! Please mark your calendars for the third weekend in October for the Tour (October 22-24). Please contact Lisa McCollum, 2010 Tour Chair, for event details and/or if you would like to be involved with this great weekend. lisa@mccollumad.com 7067993452

and Milledge Road. Mike has offered his house on the Tour this year and jumped right in, leading by example. Please join us on May 15, 2010, at the Newman home on Raymond Avenue for Summerville’s first social soiree of the year. Drinks and food provided free of charge to SNA members as a token of our appreciation for your involvement in our community. Please feel free to bring a neighbor who wants to join SNA. We will have a membership table at the front door for those who wish to join or renew their membership in SNA. If you have any questions about the Tour of Homes, our crime watch system, membership, or anything of historical interest, please feel free to call me or the other board members listed in the Post and we will be glad to help you. Get out and enjoy this beautiful weather, and see you at the Soiree on May 15! Joe Neal, President, SNA joenealjr@neal-law.com 706-829-6229

Membership

Crime Watch Corner What is crime watch?

Improving the registration process

The Summerville Neighborhood Association crime watch program is an active network of hundreds of residents in the greater Summerville area who refuse to tolerate criminal activity. Suspicious behavior or crimes in progress are reported to law enforcement and documented on our website’s crime watch blog. Alerts are sent out by e-mail to members only.

We are in the process of replacing the PDF membership form, which requires printing and mailing, with a new form that will allow online registration and payment. The new form will be published on the membership page (www. summervilleaugusta.org/membership), and we expect to have it ready before May 1.

How do I report a crime? You don’t have to be a member of SNA to report a crime to us. First report crimes or suspicious activity to the Sheriff ’s Department at 706-821-1080, then share this information with the neighborhood through e-mail at

Additionally, we are implementing a system that will automatically notify current members before their dues expire. Please make sure we have your current contact information, including email address by contacting Martha Brown at M.Brown@lzbsoutheast.com. Submitted by Jack Evans

Fly Your Summerville Flags in May

or call David Dunagan at 706-294-7360. We will not share your identity or the exact location with fellow members unless you consent.

We have dedicated the month of May “Fly Your Summerville Flags” month in honor of this year’s first social event at the Newman home, which will take place on May 15, 2010.

What’s coming next?

Please show your community spirit and get out your Summerville flags and fly them May 1-31, 2010.

Crime alerts that need your immediate attention will be sent to members via text message. This will include such events as home invasions, suspects on the loose or even a lost person. This system will quickly multiply the number of people who can inform law enforcement before criminals have a chance to evade them.

If you do not have a Summerville flag, but would like to purchase one, please contact our membership chair, Martha Brown, at M.Brown@lzbsoutheast.com or 706-831-3859 Summerville flags are heavy, durable, will last for years, cost only $30, and help show pride in the City’s most historic neighborhood!

Please Fly your Flags in May!

Do I have to be a member to receive this information? Yes. Your annual dues must be current. This helps defray the operating cost of the system and is used for all of the Summerville Neighborhood Association’s endeavors. However, areas such as Forest Hills, Country Club Hills, and bordering neighborhoods may join SNA and receive crime alerts.

First Thursdays at Midtown Market

A special thanks to Board Members Jack Evans and Anthony Farkas for designing and implementing this high-tech crime watch alert system. The more members we have to participate, the more effective our crime fighting efforts will be. Sincerely, David Dunagan Chairman, SNA Crime Watch Committee
