With new attractions and shows constantly being added, the city has something to offer every person, young or old. Three of the most exciting attractions this year include the “Fireman’s Landing” area at Silver Dollar City, Parakeet Pete’s Hot Air Balloon Ride at Branson Landing, and the highly anticipated Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial opening at College of the Ozarks. Last year, many Silver Dollar City customers were disappointed by the announcement that Geyser Gulch would close. For over 17 years, the area has provided enjoyment for children of all ages. Geyser Gulch has been transformed and “Fireman’s Landing” has proved to be well worth the change. In

Earlier this year, Parakeet Pete’s opened a Hot Air Balloon Ride on the Branson Landing. The balloon ride, located on the North side of the Landing, can be spotted from several miles away. The ride is the largest of its kind in North America. Each trip will take guests 180 feet up into the air and gives them an unbeatable bird’s eye view of Lake Taneycomo and the city of Branson. The dedication of the Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial took place on the campus of College of the Ozarks in April. The purpose of the memorial is to honor the fallen and properly thank Vietnam War Veterans for their sacrifice and bravery. The project was a result of the collaboration between the College, Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge and the PGA TOUR. The memorial is near the College’s entrance and bears the names of the more than 1,400 Missourians who served and died in the Vietnam War.

THEN 1. Branson, located in Stone and Taney Counties in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, was officially incorporated on April 1, 1912, at which time there were 1,200 residents. 2. The community was named after Ruben Branson, who was the postmaster and operator of a general store in the area in the 1880s. 3. Three man-made lakes, Taneycomo, Bull Shoals and Table Rock, surround the town. 4. In 1959, the Baldknobbers Jamboree opened the first live music show in Branson. In 1969, they built a theater on Highway 76, making their act the longest continuously running show. 5. In 1907, Harold Bell Wright published his novel, “The Shepherd of the Hills,” which depicts a mostly fictional story of mountain folklore based in the Branson area. 6. In 1960, the Old Mill Theater began its first outdoor production based on Wright’s novel. The show, now known as “The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama & Homestead” still performs shows devoted to the story today. 7. The first family attraction to draw visitors to Branson was Marvel Cave. It was first called Marble Cave because its limestone walls were thought to be marble, and was originally explored in the 1880s. 8. Also in 1960, Mary and Hugo Herschend opened a small, old-time Ozarks village attraction atop the Marvel Cave. That village grew into what is now Silver Dollar City! 9. In 1962 Paul Henning, inspired by a Boy Scout camping trip to the Ozarks, created “The Beverly Hillbillies” which ran until 1971. The first five episodes of Season 8 in 1969 are set in the Branson area when the Clampetts returned to their home. 10. The Presley family began their music show in 1963 and in 1967, they became the first music show to open on Highway 76 “The Strip.” Today, four generations of the Presley family perform in the Presleys’ Country Jubilee. 11. The increasing number of theaters and attractions in Branson drew the attention of the television program “60 Minutes,” which aired an episode about Branson in 1991. They called the town the “live music capital of the entire universe” which then caused a boom in tourism. 12. In 1987, Box Car Willie became the first internationally known entertainer to purchase a theater in Branson and have a permanent performance schedule there. 13. Between 1989 and 1995 several shows and theaters opened in Branson that are still going strong today including: Japanese violinist and entertainer Shoji Tabuchi, Andy Williams, Yakov Smirnoff, The Osmonds, and The Dixie Stampede. 14. The Showboat Branson Belle was launched into Table Rock Lake in 1994. The launching rails were lubricated with two tons of bananas because it was a biodegradable material that would not pollute the lake like grease would have. 15. In 1998, the Acrobats of China arrived in Branson making them one of the first international shows to call Branson home.
