ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW Another new year brings more exciting changes to the wonderful town of Branson. With several new shows being added and exciting attractions being built, it’s hard not to have an incredible time while on vacation. From Silver Dollar City to Promised Land Zoo, be amazed at what new things are in store.

Silver Dollar City’s World-Fest will not be returning in 2017, and taking its place will be the Festival of Wonder. This all-new festival will feature astonishing performances such as balancing acts and the artistic footwork of the seven Flamenco Kings. Guests will also have a chance to see and hear the world’s largest playable stringed instrument. Along with talented performers, the Festival of Wonder will include incredible works of culinary art. Food such as gourmet grilled cheese varieties, flat bread creations and “The World of Bacon” will be served throughout the festival. Plenty of changes will be happening at Branson’s Promised Land Zoo as well. The town’s only outdoor zoo will be adding over 60 acres to their land, creating

more wild adventures. There will be additional walk through exhibits as well as drive through ones, and a botanical garden for viewing. Some of the drive through exhibits will include a tram so visitors can be inside the enclosure with the animals. The biggest change to the zoo will be the addition of giraffes that can be fed by hand, along with nocturnal and reptile houses. Some other exciting attractions entering their first full year of operation in 2017 include Ballparks of America and the Runaway Mountain Coaster. July of 2016 saw the grand opening of Ballparks of America, and youth athletes from all over are flocking to come play ball in Branson. With replicas of iconic stadiums such as Busch Stadium and Wrigley Field, Ballparks of America adds a new dynamic to Branson attractions. Opened in August of 2016, the Runaway Mountain Coaster is still Branson’s newest thrill ride that takes thrill seekers up and down a mountainside on a roller coaster that gives the rider control of the speed. Whether it’s brand new, fairly new or old, Branson has plenty to experience while on vacation.

BRANSON CHRISTMAS TREES

Photo opportunities are plentiful around the Ozarks and that is especially true during the holiday season. There is a large amount of Christmas trees located throughout town, and each one is just as beautiful as the other. For those who want a one of a kind photo opportunity to preserve wonderful memories of vacationing to Branson, be sure to snap a picture in front of one of these trees. One place to check out for a great Christmas tree picture would be the Branson Convention Center in downtown Branson. Aside from hosting any kind of event imaginable in the Ozarks, the Convention Center is home to a 40-foot tall Christmas tree located inside their lobby.

The Branson Ferris Wheel actually has two different photo ops with Christmas trees. The first, and by far biggest, is the Christmas tree that appears on the side of the Ferris wheel several times a night through their LED light display. The other is an actual Christmas tree rather than a massive one made of LED lights. This tree is located next to the gateway entrance to the Ferris wheel. If catching a show in the Little Opry Theatre is intriguing, vacationers may want to grab a photo with the IMAX Entertainment Complex’s Christmas tree as well. The decorative tree stands tall in their lobby at the entrance of the complex. One of Branson’s most popular shopping centers is also home to one of the most photogenic trees in the Ozarks. The Branson Landing has their Christmas tree located across from the fountains, standing a whopping 65 feet tall. Right below the tree is Santa’s workshop where kids can grab a photo with jolly St. Nick after snapping one in front of the tree. Dolly Parton’s well-known dinner attraction, “Dixie Stampede,” possesses a fairly large Christmas tree they place just outside the entrance to the building. As guests walk along the stables checking out the horses that star in the show, they can’t help but admire the beautifully decorated tree outside. For those who have exited off Highway 65 and turned toward downtown Branson, odds are they have traveled through the roundabout that leads to Skaggs Road, Veterans Boulevard and Branson Landing Boulevard. A trip that may be dizzy to some is lit up with beautiful Christmas lights during the holiday season due to the 80-foot tree in the middle of the roundabout. While it may be difficult to approach this tree on foot for a picture, it is still a wonderful sight to see. Another popular shopping center in Branson, the Grand Village Shops is home to the largest Christmas store in the state of Missouri in Kringles Christmas Shop. This store is filled with a wide variety of decorations along with themed Christmas trees. After seeing everything inside, go outside and view the 14-foot tree the Shops has on display near the road. When speaking about Christmas in Branson, it is practically impossible to not mention Silver Dollar City. As one of the most popular attractions in town and a nationally recognized theme park, Silver Dollar City is home to over 5 million Christmas lights and 1,000 decorated trees. At the heart of their decorations is a five-story special effects Christmas tree that is constantly changing colors. There are plenty of Christmas trees around town that will not cost a dime to see, but Branson’s theaters know how to decorate for the holidays as well. Most people come to the live music capital of the universe to see just that; some fantastic live music. Once visitors see a show at any number of theaters around Branson, time will need to be made to see all the Christmas trees and decorations each individual theater has put up. If guests are visiting an attraction, various places have uniquely themed trees such as the Butterfly Palace and their poinsettia tree. 43

For those who will be travelling during the holiday season but still want the kids to experience all the traditions and magic of Christmas, Branson has it covered. Every family has their own Christmas traditions, many of which include a visit to see Santa Claus. Here are some of the places in Branson to bring the kids to see the big guy in a red suit during the holiday season. Branson Landing’s Town Square will be home to “Santa’s Christmas Treehouse” during the holiday season. Santa will be arriving at his 50-foot tree house in mid-November and will stay until Christmas Eve. Also at the Landing will be “Santa’s Wonderland” at Bass Pro Shops. Located at the south end of the Branson Landing, Santa will arrive in mid-November for a grand opening celebration of the Wonderland. Be sure to stop in for a visit with Santa and stick around to enjoy exciting holiday-themed games and crafts.

BRANSON SANTA SIGHTINGS

Santa, along with Mrs. Claus on selects dates, will be at Kringles Christmas Store at the Grand Village during the holiday season. Not only will visitors be able to chat with Santa and have a great photo opportunity, but live Christmas music can also be enjoyed while finishing up any remaining holiday shopping. Branson visitors can’t go wrong while at Silver Dollar City during the holidays. Their “An Old Time Christmas” festival begins in November and runs through the end of December. From the shows within the park to the parade and visiting Santa Claus Lane, Christmas fills the air during one of the nation’s top holiday festivals. Santa and his elves have set up a workshop inside the city and will be visiting with all the children until the end of the holiday season. From early November through mid-December, the Branson Scenic Railway converts into the Polar Express. This magical train ride departs from Historic Downtown Branson and heads to the North Pole to pick up Santa Claus. During the ride, passengers will enjoy hot cocoa, cookies and a live reading of the “Polar Express.” The one hour and 15-minute ride also features Santa visiting each child on the train so they can tell him all about what they want for Christmas. No matter the place or time of day, there are always lasting Christmas memories to be made in Branson. If the kids are looking forward to chatting with Santa, make plans to stop by one of these great spots during the holiday season.

Two museums are located in the Ozarks dedicated to preserving the history of Branson and its surrounding area. Residing on Commercial Street in downtown Branson, the Branson Centennial Museum features intriguing artifacts related to Branson since the town’s incorporation in 1912. Displays rotate roughly every six to eight months, with exhibits often highlighting the roots of tourism and iconic Branson citizens such as the Herschends and Reishes. The Branson Centennial Museum belongs to the White River Valley Historical Society, whose home base is located in nearby Forsyth, MO. This location cares for a number of different objects related to the history of the area such as books, documents and special objects, and exhibits range from fishing and businesses to law and Ozark authors.

HIKING IN THE OZARKS There are several parks and areas to hike throughout the Ozarks, and it’s almost impossible to name them all. There are some, however, that are more popular than others. Dogwood Canyon is located just southwest of Branson in Lampe, MO. This park covers 10,000 acres of Ozark landscape and features a six and a half mile trail that winds past waterfalls, limestone bluffs and spectacular wildlife. Branson’s most rigorous hike resides inside the Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area. This area’s hiking trail is over four miles long, and features a set of 315 stonework steps constructed in the 1930s. Those who hike the entire trail will see an old homestead and barn, a grotto, waterfall, two caves, and views of Lake Taneycomo. The Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area is a four-mile area that includes four different hiking trails, each with its own degree of difficulty. The Roark Creek trail spans over three miles long and is mostly paved, except for the last half mile. While this trail isn’t as difficult or treacherous as others found in the Ozarks, it ends at a bluff overlooking the creek which provides a great view of the surrounding landscape. The White River Valley Trail System is located within Table Rock State Park and features various degrees of difficulty and terrain. Branson’s newest hiking trail, the Waterfall Trail, features just that. This two-thirds of a mile long trail is unpaved and runs along an unnamed tributary of Roark Creek. Along with the waterfall, there are also two creek crossings, a dense tree canopy and magnificent rock formations to see while hiking. 51
