Your philanthropy breathes life into the mission and vision of Summit School each day, helping to deepen our Progressive Education roots while extending the reach of every child— now and far into the future. “Deepening Our Roots and Extending Our Reach” is not simply the name of Summit’s vibrant Strategic Plan 2016 2021. These words capture the ethos of Summit School. And this issue of Summit Support contains the names and shares the stories of people who embody that ethos. Your support makes inspiring learning possible by developing Summit’s full potential. And what does that look like? This year we see two profound expressions of your enduring stewardship in action. First, our new Strategic Plan 2016-2021: Deepening Our Roots and Extending Our Reach. This Plan focuses on three strategic areas: Exceptional Educators. We know that the single biggest variable in student
success is the quality of the classroom teacher. Goals include: developing, adopting and implementing a Summit School “Portrait of a Teacher;” refining a best practice model for faculty compensation that serves the mission and enhances the school culture; through the work of our Center for Excellence and Innovation, establishing Summit as a leader in educator training. Inspiring Learning. Inspiring learning is both who we are and what we do. Our graduates are prepared, honorable, curious, accepting and socially responsible. Goals include: refining our unique JrK – 9 curriculum model as guided by minds-on/handson approach to learning; establishing a co-curricular and curricular presence in the Winston-Salem Innovation Quarter focusing on innovation, collaboration and civic engagement of our students; continuing to develop local, regional and national partnerships with sister schools, institutions of higher learning, and innovative and entrepreneurial organizations in preparing our students for a future we can scarcely imagine. Enduring Stewardship. Our continuous improvement model honors Summit’s enduring philosophy and mission while positioning our students to both adapt to and shape a rapidly changing world. Stewardship is about paying our debt to the future. Goals include: implementing our longterm financial plan for the school; furthering our Major/Capital Gifts program, including by completing our $1 million initiative to endow the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning; sustaining our comprehensive continuous improvement plan.
Second, a visiting team report from our recent Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) accreditation in which we were viewed through the lens of our Strategic Plan and received a host of commendations, including the following: “Summit is coming from a position of strength.” “We were most impressed by the truly magical learning environment that exists at Summit and its commitment to continuous improvement.” “Development of students who possess intellectual curiosity and independence while growing as critical thinkers and problem solvers.” “A parent community which honors and celebrates the faculty as a whole and the individual ways in which teachers honor each student’s strengths and approaches to learning.” “An environment which exemplifies a culture of learning for the children and the adults in its care.” Summit’s mission is both timely and timeless, as reflected in our new Strategic Plan, as confirmed by our recent SAIS accreditation, and as evidenced through your support. FROM REFUGEE CAMP TO SUMMER CAMP When former Head of Lower School Anne Coggan Johnston learned that during the summer many refugee children in Winston-Salem have little opportunity to do much more than sit in their apartments, she knew she had to do something to change that. “I had an encounter with an acquaintance who knew that I was an educator. She said that she had been working with some refugee families and felt that there was a need for the children (and perhaps their parents) to have interesting things to do in the summer. She asked if I could think of anything. I began to formulate a plan. I asked a few former Summit staff members if they would be willing to donate their time, and everyone I asked said ‘YES!’ Then I went to Jeff Turner, Director of Co-Curricular Programs, and told him of my idea and asked if he could provide space for a summer ‘Welcome’ camp. He was immediately receptive to the idea, so I began to design a program that I thought would work well with children who spoke several different languages,” says Anne. Thus, the Summit Welcome Camp was born. In attendance were 26 campers ranging in age from four to thirteen, each of whom had lived in the U.S. for between one and nine months. Participants, who were selected by international relief and development agency World Relief, had fled countries as far away as Congo, Cambodia, Tanzania, and Syria. Because they came from all over the world, most did not speak English, and many did not speak a common language. Children attending had
fled terror, violence, poverty, and war; and many had left refugee camps only one month prior to coming to camp. Added Anne, “Several children did not speak much because they were traumatized by the hard lives they had led before arriving here. We had one child who hadn’t spoken all week, but in drum circle he became so excited, he turned to the child next to him and released a torrent of happy words. We asked the child next to him (who did speak English) what he had said. The child shrugged happily and said, ‘I have no idea, I don’t speak that language.’” In typical Summit fashion, children engaged in hands-on, experiential activities throughout the week. They enjoyed PE, art, music, math, science, gardening, and more. Common language or not, immersion in a Summit camp— complete with songs, drums, pattern
block designs in math; Midnight Medic (think dodgeball in the dark with small yarn balls); origami; print making; and potting plants— transcended language and cultural barriers. And while the children engaged with their activities, local nonprofit Imprints Cares hosted a class for parents. This class taught about nutrition, dental hygiene, and adjusting to American life. Therapy dog and Summit legend, Phoebe, even visited to help calm and make campers feel safe in a time of major adjustment for them. Summit staff, former staff, and alums worked tirelessly to make the camp a success. They were: Tom Shaver, Dane and Virginia Perry, Grace Humphreys Rockafellow, Deanna Moss, Jolene Simmons, Luli Sanderford, Peter Wilbur, Karen House, Lynne Roosa, Jane Jester, Ellen Bonnette, Mildred Paden, Claudia Paden '02, Max Curran '16, and therapy dog, Phoebe.

PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION MISSION STATEMENT Summit School provides a challenging curriculum within a caring environment to help students develop their full potential. Philanthropy can be defined as the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. In the English language, there are a plethora of words that serve as synonyms for this concept including benevolence, generosity, altruism, social conscience, charity, fellow feeling, magnanimity, munificence, unselfish, kindness, and compassion. It doesn’t matter what your preferred word to describe philanthropy is; however, it is important to understand the impact of these acts of generosity on our Summit mission. As you walk around the Summit School campus, you see examples of generosity everywhere. Our state of the art facilities have been built, remodeled, and repurposed over

the past seven decades through your generosity. We have named spaces and memorial gardens honoring people who have given much in talent, time, and treasure to the school. The impact of your generosity is also evident in our day-to-day operations. Tuition covers only part of the cost of a Summit education, with the remainder covered through an annual draw from our endowment (given generously by past generations) as well as gifts to The Summit Fund. These benefit every student in the school. This kind of philanthropy allows us to deliver on our mission. Chairing the Board of Trustees is an honor, not just in serving the school, but also in having the opportunity of working with school

administration and the other trustees in furthering our mission. The Board of Trustees is a team of highly dedicated, experienced, and engaged people that serve Summit and give freely of their time and talent. Additionally, they jump-start philanthropy by committing their financial resources every year. I am proud to report that we have participated in The Summit Fund at the 100% level for many years. BOW TIES AND BLING Nearly five hundred friends of Summit gathered on Saturday, March 25, 2017 for the biennial Parents’ Association gala. Parent volunteers transformed the Athletic Center into an elegant setting for the Bow Ties and Bling theme. A robust silent and live auction, dinner by FLIK, and dancing to the band Spare Change brought together Summit families, past, present, and future, for a remarkable evening. CLASS OF 2010 MAKES A GIFT
IN MEMORY OF CLASSMATE MACGREGOR RUFFIN ’10
In honor of late classmate MacGregor Ruffin ’10, the Class of 2010 has helped fund one of Summit’s recent recycling initiatives. With their generous gift, they helped make possible an expansion of an existing environmental stewardship program close to the heart of both Summit and MacGregor. It all began when classmates Katy Brath ’10 and Megan Probst ’10 learned of MacGregor’s passing in the summer of 2016. The two friends contacted classmates from the Summit Class of 2010 to collect funds for flowers to send to the Ruffin family. “I believe we received about $1,500. Fifteen-hundred dollars. From a group of people who hadn’t spoken to each other in six, seven, eight years. College students who had very limited funds were giving generous amounts of money to honor a friend. It was incredible to be a part of,” says Probst. Brath

continues, “It wasn’t surprising to see that kind of support come from our class. We had always been a close group, but that’s also the kind of relationship that Summit had fostered for us—even though most of us hadn’t stayed in touch after leaving Summit, we had been bonded through being there together.” Raising significantly more than they had anticipated, the group decided, in lieu of flowers, to donate their funds to Summit in MacGregor’s memory. But they were very purposeful in how they wanted the funds used. They wanted the gift to reflect MacGregor’s passion. They wanted to ensure the gift was meaningful. That is how they landed on the recycling stations. Says duWayne Amen, Summit’s Director of Facilities, “At Summit, we have had a strong recycling program for many years.

Just recently, in conjunction with the Science Department and our kitchens, we launched a compost or waste diversion program. To include the food waste at snack time, we purchased two triplerecycling stations. They include bins for trash, recyclable materials, and compost, and they are located on the Kindergarten Patio and the Hopkins Theatre Patio. We are purchasing an additional one this summer to be placed at the Triad Picnic Patio. When the Class of 2010 contacted us about honoring MacGregor Ruffin’s memory with a contribution, it was a perfect fit to purpose the funds to help pay for the cost of these recycling stations. MacGregor was studying about and prepared to pursue a career in waste management. Now her dream is reflected in Summit’s efforts to conserve our planet’s resources.”
CLASS OF 2017 — SUMMIT 9TH GRADERS
LEADERS IN PHILANTHROPY
Each year all students at Summit have opportunities to participate in service learning. Whether lending a hand to a deserving community organization, raising money for a meaningful cause, or spending time making our campus a better place, students understand the value of ‘giving back.’ As leaders of the school, the 9th grade class is always generous with their donations of time, talent, and treasure and the class of 2017 is no exception. When asked to participate in a class gift, the resounding answer was yes and 100% of the class participated. A student committee worked with Mary Craig Wilson Tennille ’94, Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship, and Sarah Dalrymple, Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement, to brainstorm ideas which were then presented to classmates. Each student made a gift of $20.17 and designated the funds to upgrade furnishings in the 9th grade lounge. The students designed and built tables on wheels
which facilitate more flexible meeting space. Another example of philanthropy demonstrated by this group includes an outreach project supported by Charlie Lovett ’77 and the Lovett Foundation. A student committee worked with Jeanne Sayers, Director of Development, to learn about the grant making process. The group reviewed applications, discussed each organization and its mission, and presented a recommendation to the classmates. After careful review, the 9th grade students awarded a $2,500 grant to GreeNest, a
Winston-Salem non-profit that provides household furnishings to individuals and families transitioning to sustainable housing. Representatives of the organization attended the 9th grade breakfast to receive the award. Congratulations to the Class of 2017—52 members strong—who set an example both on campus and in the community. Not only do they serve as role models for younger students, but they also demonstrate that Summit students are capable of making great contributions in the community as well.

Summit thanks all who participated in the first annual Founders Day Week of Giving Campaign
WEEK OF GIVING STATS
Last year, in celebration of Founders Day on September 26th, Summit School launched its first ever Week of Giving Campaign. This week-long social media campaign was intended to draw supporters together from all reaches of the country to reconnect with old friends and classmates, celebrate Summit’s founding, and encourage gifts to the school. Last year’s campaign was led by Summit Fund Parents’ Division Chairs Lauren and Jim Dunn (parents of Kevin, ’17) and aided by dozens of volunteers. To spice things up a bit, the Dunns issued a challenge to alumni, parents, grandparents, former parents, and friends to make a gift of any size. If, by the end of the week, 150 gifts were raised, Jim and Lauren would contribute an additional $1,500 to Summit. The Week of Giving was a tremendous success, and instead of 150 gifts, Summit received 195.

LULA DITMORE SANDLIN FUND FOR TEACHING ENRICHMENT – 1990 Established in loving memory of Mrs. Sandlin to honor her 40 years of teaching and to provide support for Summit faculty.
AURELIA PLUMLY SPAUGH FUND – 1992 Established with a bequest from Aurelia Spaugh, one of Summit’s first teachers, to provide a four to six week mini-sabbatical for a teacher to travel, do research, study at other schools, etc.

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP FUND - 1997 Established in response to the Lovett Challenge during the Great Expectations, Building the Future Campaign, to provide financial assistance to deserving students who might not otherwise be able to attend Summit.
HEAD’S DISCRETIONARY FUND – 1997 Initiated by Summit faculty and staff in 1991 and endowed by an anonymous donor during the Great Expectations Campaign to enable the head of school to address non-tuition related school expenses for deserving students with demonstrated financial need.
MARIAN G. DEBELL FUND – 2000 Established in loving memory of Mrs. DeBell by her family to provide financial aid to deserving students who otherwise would be unable to attend Summit.
THE PERKINSON FAMILY TRAVEL FUND - 2000 Established in memory of Carl J. Perkinson by Mrs. Carl J. Perkinson, Mrs. Gladys Perkinson Hershey ’79, Mr. John Perkinson ’74 and Ms. Elizabeth Graves Perkinson ’71 to help students with demonstrated financial need enrich their educational experiences by participating in school-endorsed trips.

DONNA SHORES DIVERSITY FUND - 2002 Established in loving memory of Donna by her colleagues at Summit, the Summit School Parents’ Association, and other friends. In recognition of Donna’s 29 years of master teaching at Summit, this fund supports diversity through financial aid.
SUMMIT SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY FUND - 2006 Established at the Winston-Salem Foundation by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to honor Dr. Ramon Velez for his service on their Poor and Needy Division advisory board. This fund provides financial aid to children of needy families in Forsyth County.
THE TRIAD ACADEMY FINANCIAL AID ENDOWMENT – 2012 Established upon the merger of Triad Academy and Summit School to provide financial assistance for bright students diagnosed with dyslexia and related reading-based academic difficulties.

SYLVIA HOLT CEBECI ’56 MEMORIAL FUND - 2014 Established by Dr. Tuncer Cebeci in honor of his late wife, Sylvia Holt Cebeci, Summit School Class of 1956. This fund provides need-based tuition assistance for deserving students.
GENERAL AND OPERATING SUPPORT SUMMIT SCHOOL ENDOWMENT FUND - 1959 Established at the Winston-Salem Foundation with a gift from Frank B. Hanes, Sr. to support Summit.
JOE PARRISH, JR. SPORTS FUND - 1985 Established by the Summit Board of Trustees in memory of Joe Parrish, Jr., parent and board member. The fund celebrates Joe’s joyful spirit, energy and enthusiasm in his love of sports, and provides support of the physical education and sports programs.
