EMPATHIZERS We meet each child where he or she is today and group students with similar learning profiles. Some of our students are twice-exceptional; they are often gifted in math and higher level thinking, but challenged in reading and/or writing. With small class sizes, our teachers differentiate within each subject to challenge, but not frustrate their students. Our goal is to close the gap between a child's strong cognitive ability and achievement so that each child can work to his or her potential.

MISSION FOCUSED Triad has students enrolled in grades one through eight. Students who apply to the Triad division must have: a full psycho-educational evaluation which includes a test of intelligence, preferably the WISC V the Woodcock Johnson IV, a test of academic achievement.
The efficacy of the programming requires that applicants have a cognitive ability in the average to superior range. Triad is not able to appropriately serve students with a primary diagnosis of autism, emotional disabilities, or conduct disorders. While some of our students also may have ADD or ADHD as a secondary diagnosis to dyslexia, no one is admitted with only a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD.

ACHIEVERS Often gifted in art, music, and athletics, Triad students are given the opportunity to lead and shine on the Summit campus. They, along with their peers in other divisions, participate in music, robotics, studio art, physical education, digital media, drama, guidance, design, and technology and all other grade-level signature events.

EVIDENCE BASED Our program is grounded in the principles of Orton-Gillingham (O-G) instruction, the gold standard for teaching students with dyslexia. All members of our faculty are credentialed in the O-G approach or are actively working toward certification. We are one of fewer than 20 schools in the US and one of two in the region accredited by The Orton-Gillingham Academy.
In all areas of our curriculum, we teach the underlying structure of the English language using an approach that is: • Language-based to improve reading and writing skills • Multisensory to increase each child’s opportunity for learning • Individualized to work with each child’s strengths and learning needs • Structured to provide each child with clear academic expectations • Comprehensive to prepare students to return to a traditional classroom • Intensive with a minimum of two hours daily of language development
We use multisensory techniques because students with learning differences tend to struggle with traditional teaching methods that emphasize pencil and paper learning. For these students to successfully master new material, the auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning channels must be stimulated simultaneously. Our students “see it, say it, and do it” as they learn. New material is broken into its smallest meaningful units, or sub-steps, and is repeatedly reviewed and taught to a level of mastery. Learning happens incrementally on a firm foundation of prior knowledge.
According to their skill level, students are placed in small homogenous groups for language tutorial, a one-hour daily class that focuses on word attack, spelling, and more advanced language structure concepts, as appropriate for each child’s reading and written language level. Teachers are able to provide individual instruction while students gain the additional benefit of learning from each other.

TEACHERS Our faculty is the heart and soul of all we do in Triad. Their compassion, expertise, creativity, and unwavering commitment to each and every student result in the success of our program. With the most highly trained faculty of Orton-Gillingham practitioners in the state, as of 2020, Triad has two Fellows and four Fellows-In-Training. As an accredited instructional program, our faculty can provide training for educators who wish to teach in our division.

SUCCESSFUL When students learn to work independently and have acquired the academic skills to perform at or above grade level, they transition out of Triad and into a traditional classroom for English, math, science, and social studies. Because writing is the last and most difficult skill to acquire, some Triad students may need a writing tutor after they leave the division. Once leaving the division, students may opt to add a foreign language to their schedules.

COMMUNITY Since 2014, Triad has offered an Orton-Gillingham summer tutoring program for children who are struggling with reading and writing in rising grades first through fourth in the Winston-Salem community and beyond. As part of our mission to help as many children with dyslexia, Triad shares its expertise with the community by offering outreach training. Parent learning opportunities are provided throughout the year and may be found on the Summit School website and our social media channels.
