A Message from the Head of School “Until the child has learned, you have not taught.” Founding Head of School Louise Futtrell uttered these words 80 years ago and Summit teachers continue to live their meaning each day. At Summit, our children are surrounded by teachers who serve as mentors and models—encouragers and friends— who engage them in the present and prepare them for the future. In the past year alone, our teachers have engaged students in a staggering variety of high-caliber learning experiences—all of which are made possible through the philanthropy of Summit’s supporters—including:

Founded 1933

• An iPad research project designed in collaboration with Wake Forest University • A compacted math program for gifted students • A collaborative vehicle design project with engineers from the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology • A robust service learning program focusing students on engaging in civic responsibility • Online courses that tap individual student interests • Immersion-based foreign language instruction in the Lower School • A new Upper School choral program

A Message from the Head of School continued An education of Summit’s caliber demands dedicated, skilled teachers and administrators, involved parents, and generous donors whose gifts provide resources required to stay on the leading edge of excellence in educational thought and practice. As you will read in the stories shared in the following pages, people support Summit for a variety of reasons. One set of past parents describes the warm and nurturing environment that offers all students the opportunity to be involved in a host of rich experiences, including musicals, athletics and theater. One set of current parents celebrates the individual attention children receive and the emphasis Summit places on the 21st century skill of working effectively with others.

A past parent-grandparent-teacher (and current administrative assistant) expresses gratitude for the competence and confidence that Summit cultivates in students, equipping them for the challenges they will face in high school, college and beyond. And a recent graduate reveals both gratitude and vintage Summit philanthropic spirit. Writer-in-Residence and Summit alum Charlie Lovett captures the promise of educators who engage the whole child when he writes, “What inspires me to teach at Summit is that here there are no limits on our imaginations—or those of our students. If we can dream it, we can do it.” The art and science of dreaming and doing—of giving children transformational experiences that inspire them to place their signatures on the world—represent Summit’s legacy and Summit’s future. Your philanthropy protects that future. I invite you to explore this report as a window into the financial health and stability of Summit—and as a testament to your commitment to providing the resources for our educators to engage the whole child. It is a privilege to recognize the donors listed here. The teachers, administrators and Board of Trustees join me in expressing our deep gratitude, what G.K. Chesterton described as “happiness doubled by wonder,” for all that you do and all that you are as supporters of Summit. Your investment in our special community creates a lifetime of learning for our students. Thank you.

Director of School Support

The School admits students of any race, religion, color, and national or ethnic origin.

Family Profile

Sidney and Dan Falken

When Dan and Sidney Falken sent their son, Sam, ’09 and later, their daughter, Grace, ’11 off to Junior Kindergarten at Summit, they fully expected the children would transfer to public schools at some point. But each year, they found new reasons to keep their children at Summit. “When they were little, we thought this would be such a warm and nurturing place for them,” Sidney said. “But by the time they’re in the upper grades, there are a lot of opportunities programmed into the school year– musicals, athletics, theater. I think it gives them a ton of confidence because everyone’s doing it, even though not all of them are naturally gifted.” Now that both of their children have graduated, the Falkens continue to support Summit and have made a commitment to reach out to other parents of recent alums. Like many young families, the Falkens are not waiting until they reach their prime earning years to support causes and institutions they believe in.

Dan Falken, at left, Grace ‘11, Sam ‘09 and wife, Sidney.

Summit represents a really important institution in town, as an alternative to public schools, Dan said. We’re not contributing huge amounts, but it’s worth contributing. As a company town with a long tradition of corporate philanthropy, people in Winston-Salem have sometimes been slower to support local institutions than those in other cities, Dan said. “There was always someone who was going to take care of this, so we were off the hook,” he said. “That’s not really the case anymore.”

Family Profile

Terra and Terry Snider

When Terra Snider was growing up in Charleston, W. Va., higher education was a distant dream. “I did very well in school but didn’t have the money or resources or any idea how to get an education,” she said. That changed when Snider met Marjorie Johnson, a local philanthropist. Johnson took an interest in Snider and paid all of her expenses through four years of college. Only after Johnson died in 1996 did Snider find out that Johnson had put 40 local students through college.

It changed the whole trajectory of my life, Snider said. I made a promise to myself that if I was ever in a position to do something similar, I would. 14 16

Snider and her husband, Terry, have two young children at Summit, Ava ’22 and Grayson ’19. But they have already created a trust that will allow children with potential, who wouldn’t normally have the means, to attend Summit. Snider appreciates the individual attention children receive at Summit, and the emphasis the school puts on working together with others. She also likes the fact that Summit challenges children, but doesn’t slap labels on them. Children learn to participate in athletics, art, theater and music for the enjoyment of the experience, whether they are particularly gifted in those areas or not. She likes to think about how the world will open up for the children who are able to take advantage of her and her husband’s gift. “They’ll be able to have their whole lives go in a different direction,” Snider said, “based on being in a loving and caring environment.”

Because of you, we are educators who engage the whole child. Every day, Summit’s world-class faculty brings the highest level of expertise in their field, a wellhoned sense of what each child needs, and a deep personal capacity for inspiring learning. The Parsley family, Ellen ‘63, Will ‘95 & Emily ‘95, Robert ’99, and Katie Johnson ’99, invited alums to help us support the educators who equip each student for a journey of lifelong learning and you responded. The results speak for themselves and demonstrate that Summit alums are proud of this educational institution. The average gift from alums was $219. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide about four percent of the school’s operating budget each year. These unrestricted gifts help meet immediate needs, develop relevant new programs and sustain the vitality of students’ academic experience. Response from alums is extremely gratifying because it indicates a Summit education is valued long after graduation. In addition, alum donations support the financial aid program. The Alumni Scholarship Fund was founded in 1997 with a challenge from the Lovett Foundation. It provides aid to students with demonstrated financial need. To date, alum dollars assist nearly two students per year.

Alum Profile

Keenan Rogers

Summit days are barely behind Keenan Rogers ‘11, but he is conscious of how much his time there has already influenced his life. “Summit hasn’t shaped the path I’m on–it has defined it,” he said. “Summit’s a place where a new experience is lobbed at you seemingly weekly, where faculty cares deeply about your success, where work ethic is constructed and where growth is encouraged.” The focus on creative writing in Eighth and Ninth Grades helped him refine his writing abilities, and in the process, discover how much he loves being able to express himself. In Ninth Grade he began writing entries on a school blog. That experience inspired him to write his own blog, in which he writes about music.

Even the small moments at Summit made the school special. Keenan said it was always a joy to walk into Martha Albertson’s class after staying up late the night before and hear her say, “Good morning adorable children.” 30

“Right now I’m a student at Mount Tabor High School. I love Tabor. It’s a great place and I support it wholeheartedly. Tabor people are my friends,” he said. “But Summit people–we’re family. And family comes first!” Supporting Summit, even though he does not yet have a full-time job, was a no-brainer for Keenan. He hopes to start a tradition of young people supporting the school while they’re still completing their own educations. “We were incredibly blessed to have gotten the chance to attend such a phenomenal school,” he said. “Others deserve the same chance. If we can make make the school even better than when we attended, why wouldn’t we?”

The Most Personal Gift In choosing to give a gift, individuals renew connections to other people, institutions and traditions. Perhaps no gift is more personal than a bequest. The decision to share one’s resources with future generations requires deep, careful thought and planning and reflects the person’s heartfelt beliefs and intentions. We are grateful to Frank E. Roberts and Harold L. Southern who named Summit School to receive proceeds from charitable trusts established during their lifetimes. Mr. Roberts’ connection to Summit began when his grandson, Drew Canady ’01, enrolled in Jr Kindergarten in 1990. Sarah ‘06 and Jenna ‘07 quickly followed their brother as Summiteers. Mr. Roberts’ daughter, Tricia Canady, said her father loved seeing his grandchildren thrive at Summit and always enjoyed keeping up with their school activities. “Dad appreciated the many ways Summit School guided, developed, encouraged and supported his grandchildren. He was at all those graduations filled with such pride and joy in watching each one of his grandchildren cross the stage. He took great joy in knowing his bequest would make the same opportunity available for future generations.”

Harold Southern at right with son, Hal Southern ‘72, daughter, Debbie Southern ‘74, wife, Mildred.

A similar sentiment is shared by Debbie Southern ‘74. She wrote, “My father was a planner and a giver. He took tremendous pride in helping organizations that touched his heart and soul in some way and therefore, put them in his trust. Both my brother (Hal ‘72) and I attended Summit. My father was extremely pleased with our education; Summit School is an organization he regarded highly. It is a pleasure for my mother, brother and me to honor dad and his wishes by presenting his bequest to Summit.” These donors’ foresight and generosity help Summit remain at the forefront of elementary education. They, and others who have remembered Summit in their estate plans, leave a lasting legacy.

Have You Included Summit in Your Estate Plans? 32

The Patrons for Tomorrow club was established to recognize those friends who have made provisions for a planned gift to Summit. Planned gifts through a bequest or other ways of giving can help you realize important tax savings while making a significant gift to the school. Not everyone can make a major gift, but everyone can make a planned gift. With careful planning, your charitable gift may provide steady income for you or a family member, provide income tax deductions, allow you to avoid capital gains taxes on highly appreciated property, and help you reduce estate and gift taxes.

Here are several ways you can support Summit and become a member of the Patrons for Tomorrow club: A bequest through your will for a fixed amount (cash, stock, real estate) or a percentage of your estate. A gift naming Summit as beneficiary and/or owner of a new or existing life insurance policy. A trust or other deferred gift arrangement that can benefit both Summit and your family. To find out more about estate gift opportunities and charitable trusts, please contact Camille Townsend, CFRE, Director of School Support, Summit School, 2100 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 (336/724-5811).

New Parents’ Capital Campaign For generations, Summit’s dedicated and generous community has stepped forward to fund new buildings and major renovations. Capital campaign gifts catapult the school forward in transformative ways. Parents joining Summit in 2011-12 conducted a capital campaign to raise funds for the Learning That Lasts Forever Campaign. Wesley ‘87 and Marina Davis recruited and led a team of eleven volunteers who delivered one of the most successful New Parents’ Campaigns in many years. Their generosity continues a tradition began in 1984 and brings the Learning That Lasts Forever Campaign total to $10.9 million. Wesley and five other alums were among the volunteers: Libby Whitaker Kelly ‘91, Alice Burress Sarlls ‘76, Forrest Stephens Staton ‘95, Jennifer Blackmer Williams ‘88 and Fletcher Wilson ‘86. Wesley credits his team with the campaign’s success. “We had a wonderful team of volunteers whose energy and ideas made it easy to convey the importance of the campaign and inspire others to join the effort. We alumni volunteers could share our first hand knowledge of the enduring value of a Summit education, and parents new to Summit brought invigorating new perspectives of the school we love. It was a pleasure to work with and get to know this incredible group of volunteers and parents.”

As a child growing up in tiny Union Mills, N.C., no one had a lot of money, but helping one another was a way of life for young Betty Belk Pratt. “There were many things we could do that didn’t cost money. We drove people to the doctor or to church. We cooked meals for people when they were sick. We cared for one another. In the summer, the visiting ministers always stayed in our home. “Union Mills is a rural community. Most people there either farmed or worked in nearby Rutherfordton. Everyone had a garden and we shared what we grew. By today’s standards, we were all poor but the children of Union Mills learned to work hard and the vast majority of us went on to graduate from college,” Betty said. For Betty life took a sad turn when her father died when she was 16. When the time came for Betty to attend college, a much needed scholarship made the impossible possible— and she never forgot that. Betty graduated from Queens College with a degree in English. She served the university many years on its Alumni Board. She is deeply grateful for the scholarship that enabled her to continue her education. Those early kindnesses influenced Betty and she has always looked for ways to give back. Betty and her husband, Jack, moved to Winston-Salem in 1959 and their son, Jack ’71, started at Summit three

years later. When Betsy Hoppe ’74, started kindergarten at Summit in 1964, Betty began her work as a teacher’s assistant. She had been a teacher in the public school system prior to having children and she knew Summit’s reputation. Jim ’81 joined his siblings in 1970. She is profoundly grateful for the education it provided her own children and six of her seven grandchildren. A relocation brought Jim’s family to Winston-Salem in August. Betty is thrilled two more grandchildren, Bo ’18 and Will ’15, become Summiteers this year. Betty’s loyalty to Summit is driven by her love for the school and for the children it has educated. Her dedication to the school is in direct response to all Summit has given her and her family. Because life has been good to her and her late husband, Jack, the two of them established a trust at the Winston-Salem Foundation to benefit Summit. “We are grateful to Summit for everything it has given our family,” she said. “The education that a child receives here is so important. Summit prepares children for the next step in their lives. Students leave here with confidence, knowing they are well equipped for the challenges they will face in high school, college, and beyond.” Her own children look back on their experiences at Summit fondly, and she likes the idea of knowing that she and her husband are helping the school continue its mission.
