Living in sundance
Sundance Sundance Resort is a ski resort area located 13 miles northeast of Provo, Utah, spanning over 5,000 acres on the slopes of Mount Timpanogos in Utah’s Wasatch Range. Centuries ago, the Ute Indians retreated to this area to escape the summer heat and hunt the abundant game. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the Stewarts, a family of Scottish immigrants, had settled the canyon. While the first generations were mostly surveyors and sheepherders, the next generation saw excitement and opportunity in the snow-laden slopes beneath Mount Timpanogos. Snow skiing began on the site in 1944 when the ski area opened as “Timphaven.” It was run by the Ray Stewart family for over twenty years and chairlifts were added in the 1960s. In 1969, actor Robert Redford bought Timphaven and much of the surrounding land from the Stewart family, and Sundance was born. Redford presumably acquired the site because his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen was from Utah, and because the couple had built a home in the area five years earlier. The resort is named after the role he played in the 1969 film, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The resort of Sundance is not to be confused with the town of Sundance, Wyoming, the location from where the “Sundance Kid” received his name. Redford’s 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson was filmed near the resort. The Sundance Institute, the spectacular skiing, the stunning natural scenery, and the tasteful excellence of the accommodations combine to make Sundance dynamically unique. St. George
St. George is located in the southwestern part of the state of Utah and is the county seat and commercial center of Utah’s “Dixie,” a nickname given to the area when Mormon pioneers grew cotton in the warm climate. St. George is the eighth largest city in Utah, but still maintains its small town feel. Tourism is one of St. George’s primary businesses, however, the city has shown rapid growth since 1990 and has become a vibrant retirement community as well. St. George is recognized nationally and internationally as a year-round sanctuary for visitors, residents and business. In the summer of 2008, St. George was acknowledged by Inc. Magazine as the second best city in the United States for business. In June of 2008, U.S. News and World Report called St. George “One of 10 Great Retirement Spots for Golf Nuts.” Where to Retire Magazine has routinely rated St. George as one of the great places in the U.S. to retire, and Money Magazine has called St. George “One of the Best Places to Live.” St. George’s trademark is its geology. Red bluffs make up the northern part of the city. The northeastern edges of the Mojave Desert are visible to the south, Zion National Park can be seen to the east, and the Pine Valley Mountains loom over the city to the north and northwest. The weather has more in common with the deserts that surround Utah than with the cold northern part of the state, with warm summers and little or no snow during the winter seasons. With a year-round mild climate, the residents of the area can enjoy golf, hiking, biking, and tennis all year. Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon are all within a short drive. The Tuacahan Amphitheatre brings musicals and entertainers to its outdoor stage and the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City is a quick drive north, while Las Vegas lies just an hour south on Interstate 15.
