committed GENEROSITY A CONVERSATION WITH JON HUNTSMAN, SR.

J

on Huntsman, Sr. is the classic American success story. Born in 1937 in Blackfoot, Idaho, young Jon was raised in a series of small Idaho towns. His father was a schoolteacher, and his mother a homemaker. When Jon was 13 years old, his father decided to go back to college and picked Stanford University, so the family moved to Palo Alto, Calif. With his father in school, Jon was charged with helping support the family, often holding down three jobs to pay for the family car and medical expenses. “My upbringing was very meager,” he says. “But at the time, I didn’t know we were poor.” Through hard work and determination, young Jon graduated at the top of his class from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. Eschewing job offers from Wall Street, Huntsman embarked upon a career selling eggs in Los Angeles, about which he

says, “It was about as unglamorous a job as a Wharton graduate has ever taken.” But it launched Huntsman on a new career in plastics when he invented the first polystyrene egg carton. Once again, his determination and ingenuity assured him a path to success. Eventually, Huntsman started his own plastics container company that, among many other products, produced the clamshell carton for McDonald’s. There is no question that Huntsman’s businesses have been successful over the years, as numerous articles in such publications as Forbes, Fortune, and The New York Times have attested. But in recent years, it has been his philanthropic work that has consumed his time and passion. The Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City has been the beneficiary of the majority of his generosity, where a 100-bed hospital, combined with a large genetic cancer research facility, treats patients from around the world. More than 1,400 scientists, investigators, oncologists and medical specialists are at work finding cures for cancer through cutting-edge gene cell research. In 2013, Huntsman Cancer Foundation announced a major research expansion at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI): The Primary Children’s and Families’ Cancer Research Center. This expansion will double the size of HCI's cancer research operations with state-of-the-art infrastructure to advance research on cancers that impact children and families.


Recently awarded the 2014 William E. Simon Prize for Philanthropic Leadership, Huntsman, along with other wealthy individuals such as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, is convinced that committed generosity is the best way for us all to make a difference in the world. “Giving is at his very core as a human being,” says his son, Jon Huntsman Jr., former governor of Utah and former ambassador to China. “I grew up when there was no money to give, but he always talked about giving. He has spent his entire life giving and thinking about others.” Huntsman is a caring employer whose workers will go out of their way to express their appreciation and admiration for the family. Huntsman Springs Director of Agronomy Guy Johnson says, “I’ve worked for five owners at different clubs in my career, but no one is better than the Huntsmans. They really care about their employees.” To Huntsman, his grandchildren may be the most important people in his life. Inside his spacious office near the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City is a bronze sculpture by artist Frederic Remington. Undoubtedly worth tens of thousands of dollars, it is displayed prominently on a round wooden table near the center of the office. Instead of being encased in bulletproof glass or guarded by the latest laser technology, it is covered in Beanie Babies, maybe a hundred of them, nearly obscuring the sculpture on which they rest. When asked, “Is that a Remington sculpture covered in Beanie Babies?” his wife Karen was quick to answer, “Yes. He cherishes those Beanie Babies. They were given to him by his grandkids.” And therein lies the essence of the man: Wealth? Give it away to an important cause. Family? The most cherished gift in the world.

[Q ] Mr. Huntsman, you were born in rural Idaho, not far from where Huntsman Springs is today. How do you remember your early years here? [A] I remember my early childhood in Idaho very fondly. We didn’t

have much in the way of material things, but my brother and I played with each other and with neighborhood friends when we were not doing chores or selling papers or something to help raise money for the household. We always felt safe there. Most of the people in the area were as poor as we were, so my brother and I never really knew our family was among the lower financial echelons of society until our father enrolled at Stanford University on the G.I. Bill. The contrast in spending money and homes became quite stark.

[Q ] When you go back to Idaho these days, having traveled the world, does it still feel like you are “going home”? What has changed and what remains the same? [A] Every time I get to our home in Idaho, I can actually feel the

tension lessen its grip on me. The reduction in stress is almost immediate. Karen and I, and our son Mark, love being there. We all breathe the clean air, we are able to relax and appreciate our beautiful surroundings, and we love the people who live around our home. My continuing roles in the corporation and our foundation keep me from being in Idaho as much as I would like, but I make the trip to Driggs at every possible opportunity, just to regroup before tackling the next set of issues in the real world.

[Q ] The story is told that you decided to build Huntsman Springs one day while fly-fishing the Teton River. How did the idea come to you?

[A] It really just occurred to me as I was on the river that somebody

ought to put the area around Driggs to better use and to make the most of the natural recreational opportunities that our family has always enjoyed there. My mind always takes ideas like that to the next step, and

the natural progression was that the “somebody” could be me. We love living here so much that I thought, why not develop a part of the vast acreage here so that others could come and live and enjoy the tranquility and beauty as much as we always have? [Q ] Please describe your big-picture “vision” for Huntsman Springs.

[A] We certainly don’t have any desire to change the area, because

the quiet and natural beauty of this part of Idaho is what is so unique. Our vision for Huntsman Springs is that it be tailored to the surrounding landscape while respecting the environment. We also want to be mindful of those who have lived here all their lives. We hope that Huntsman Springs will enhance Driggs and the lifestyle of current residents as well as providing an attractive recreational and residential community for newcomers who have yet to discover this part of the country.

[Q ] There is still only one traffic light in Driggs, Idaho. Do you see it more as “the next Aspen” or “the last great American small town”? [A] I truly hope that the characteristics of Driggs never change. It

may be among the last great American small towns. Rural towns everywhere tend to be discovered eventually and attract people trying to escape the hassle of urban life, but I would not like to see Driggs develop into an Aspen or Park City. We truly love everything about Driggs as it is today and hope that it stays small and clean and a safe place to live and spend time with the family.

[Q ] As the patriarch of a large family, with nine children and more than 50 grandchildren, you clearly have a great passion for the strength of the family in American life. Was this a primary motivation for creating Huntsman Springs? [A] Absolutely. Our own children and their children and the next

generations are what families are all about. We hope Huntsman Springs will provide the setting for those rewarding aspects of family time people can manage to spend together. Family and friends is what Huntsman Springs is all about.

[Q ] Do you nowadays take your kids and grandkids with you fly-fishing? Or is it more your time alone in nature?

[A] I love to take my grandchildren wherever I go. We are blessed

with more than 50 beautiful grandchildren from eight of our nine sons and daughters. Many of them are superb outdoorsmen and love to fly-fish. It is a joy for me just to be in their presence and listen to them tell me about their dreams, their hopes, and school life, and any other concerns that grandfathers should know about while we are in the quiet surroundings of fly-fishing together.

[Q ] Finally, how would you describe Teton Valley to someone who has never visited?

[A] Perhaps “heaven on earth” is a term that one could use.

“God’s peaceful valley” may be another expression that comes to mind. Tranquility and peace, combined with every type of sport and recreational activity imaginable, all combine to make Teton Valley the ideal place to visit. The magical Tetons represent nature’s most beautiful and spectacular setting. No location on earth can replace this magical and beautiful valley. 

St. George

St. George is located in the southwestern part of the state of Utah and is the county seat and commercial center of Utah’s “Dixie,” a nickname given to the area when Mormon pioneers grew cotton in the warm climate.
