Let us consider the sacredness of these holy days while we celebrate the holidays. . . and may we remember that we don’t need more to be thankful for, we just need to be more thankful! Everyday truly is a Holiday!
Give the gift of
Wildwood Sunshine!
Dear Dorothy, My copy of Hello Sun arrived in the mail. I was truly captivated by the beauty of the sunrise photos and the quotes that so perfectly matched. The book is so inspirational and uplifting that I decided to order additional copies for friends, as it makes a beautiful gift.

Merry Christmas 2018
“We owe it to each other to tell our stories.” ~Neil Gaiman
from the editor
See what’s inside
Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all, my sunniest of friends! What a wonderful 2018 season of Fun in The Sun it’s been! I hope it was for you as well. Now that Summer ‘18 has become a part of our sweet history, I’m looking forward to all of the stories it inspired, just waiting to be told. Have I told you how much I love my job and how grateful I am for the opportunity God has given me to share your stories?! Some inspired person once wrote, “By doing what you love, you inspire and awaken the hearts of others.” I wholeheartedly agree :-) Stories are like old friends we’re fortunate to visit with from time to time, have tea with and share a part of ourselves, thanks to the memories they inspire. They help us to find our place – they create our personal history comprised of family, community, and culture. The pages of The Sun have become like one big love story written to remind us that the wonderful story of the Wildwoods started long before us and continues to live on, as we pass our love of the seashore down through each generation. I’m overwhelmed by all of the “Dear Sun” letters I receive, telling me how much you love reading The Sun… The salty sea got into my heart and soul, and my story poured out onto the pages of The Sun. My grandparents fell in love with this Island and brought my father and his siblings here in the summers. My parents wanted to do the same for their children, so they bought us a home here, too! The sand will forever be in between our toes... How about you? What is your story? Usually the first thing I ask people is, how did you get to Wildwood? The beginning seems like a good place to start! The Sun will forever be my own family’s story, too...it began when my husband, son and I went on a tremendous adventure 15 years ago to create this magazine, launching our first issue on April Fool’s Day, 2004, taking the Island by surprise... and us! by the warm response it received... it makes me smile so much remembering it all... Now, your stories, memories, and photos have become the heartbeat of The SUN. Why not take some time to gather your loved ones and celebrate your stories? Get out those old dusty boxes of family photos. You may discover some treasured photos inside... The Wildwoods are such a special place I’ll never tire of writing about. . . sharing those unforgettable tales occurring right here by the sea… Send your old photos and stories to The Sun! Here’s an Idea!
Let’s buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed people, for example, from your neighbor who sells online, a local craftsperson who makes great things, the stunning local florist shops, clothing shops, cafes, the local bakers that sell homemade goodness. Let’s make sure our money goes to individual people and not multinational companies, this way more locals will have a better Christmas. Support real people and show community support. . .

Diner Cafe Major Credit Cards Accepted She actually found a message in a bottle. . . Linda Kelley has to have the best eyesight of any lifeguard on the Jersey Shore – or maybe anywhere. Three years ago, lifeguarding at Diamond Beach, Linda spotted a bottle with a message in it bobbing in the waves. And it wasn’t one of those big bottles you always picture, but a little tube, smaller even than your average test tube. She doesn’t know how she spotted it. “I just did,” she says. Earlier in our conversation she announced, “I’m known to find money,” and related that she found $300 this past season, mostly in fifties and right out there in the street. Luck of the Irish plus good eyes... very blue good eyes!? Anyhow, whoever actually heard of someone finding a message in a bottle – and what did Linda Kelley’s message say? There’s a cool, yet warm story here: first, the message said to send the bottle to a guy named Barry Smith in upstate Pennsylvania for a reward. So Linda replied and Barry sent her a $20 Domino’s gift card (of all things!) in a pop-up card! . . . “he sends me beautiful pop-up cards every Christmas now,” Linda says. The gift card wasn’t what you’d expect in return to finding a message in a bottle, but the best was yet to come. This June, she got a letter from Barry saying that he was coming to Wildwood and wanted to meet her for dinner at Beach Creek Restaurant. One thing: he didn’t know what Linda looked like and was walking around Beach Creek asking diners, “Did you find a message in a bottle?”
and best wishes for a Happy New Year!
325 W. Spruce Avenue • North Wildwood 609.729.4900 • www.stardinercafe.com When Barry Smith finally found Linda Kelley, over dinner he told her the backstory of his ‘message in a bottle’: twenty years ago he went through a divorce and gained custody of his daughter, Marie, which is unusual in divorce cases. Marie was ten years old at the time, and to teach her the virtue of patience, he told Linda, he put the first of the messages in a bottle and sent it out to sea. Since then, Smith says that he has sent bottles out to sea whenever he and his daughter were at a seaside resort. Talk about patience; twenty years later, with Marie now being married with a child... Linda Kelly was the first and only person to contact Barry Smith about finding their message in a bottle. She says that her friends thought that maybe she’d strike it rich when she received her reward. Well, rich in pizza anyhow, with a Domino’s gift card and some new friends. For his part, Barry says that he was “dumbfounded” when Linda contacted him and that when he told his daughter, now a computer tomography specialist at a hospital in Cleveland, she was “astounded.” So the next time you hear Sting sing “Message in a Bottle,” think of Linda Kelley and her sharp blue eyes.

Hildreth House Mantle carved by a British Soldier
This family photo c. 1930s was sent by Jeri Hoffman Holton, native of Anglesea, of “the girls going gunning” on the Rio Grande property BACK ROW - Bertha Hoffman Smith, daughter Gerry Smith, Great-Great Aunt Hess (Winterwood’s ghost), her sister, Sadie Hildreth Hoffman, Jeri’s father’s grandmother. Meet Cindi and Tom Alvarado, owners of Winterwood, three gift shops located on the Wildwood boardwalk, Rio Grande, and Cape May, offering wonderful Christmas-themed gifts as well as yeararound accessories for people wanting warm, welcoming reminders of family and friends. In 1978, Cindi Sawyer Alvarado’s parents bought an old, circa-1735 house located about a mile north of Route 9 and 47 in Rio Grande on the mainland. The Sawyers renovated the small rooms in the Hildreth house. In 1985, Cindi and Tom bought the house and turned it into the first Winterwood Christmas Shoppe. The former house with low ceilings offers unique charm and a story of its own to tell. A plaque above one of the fireplace mantels mentions that the Hildreth family harbored a British soldier who defected during the American Revolution. To repay their kindness, the soldier carved the intricate mantel. Studying the mantel, it’s easy to picture a man toiling away during many a winter evening to show his gratitude. Although it can’t be seen from the driveway, back in the woods is the old Hildreth family graveyard. According to Cindy, the cemetery contains the graves of Hildreth children, sadly lost to the many illnesses that plagued early settlers. The history of the house, engraved on a plaque by the front entrance, jokingly warns customers not to be disturbed by Hestor (Hildreth) the resident ghost named after the spinster who once lived there. (photo) Winterwood’s Hildreth House is open year around, although it slows down for the two months following Christmas when the store is open only on weekends. The equally-charming year-round Cape May City Winterwood originally opened in 1989 at Carpenter Square Mall, then moved to its current location, in an old bank building on the corner of Washington and Ocean Streets, in 2005. The store is strategically located to beckon tourists with its unusually-situated corner steps and majestically-curved doorway. Cape
watercolor by Dorothy Kulisek May City and its businesses offer weekend events throughout all four seasons, and the weather occasionally cooperates, contributing to the perfect shopping excursion. Last but not least, the Winterwood shop on the Wildwood Boardwalk (between Glenwood and Magnolia) is the only seasonal venture. Cindi commented that the boardwalk store is packed throughout the short season with customers shopping for holiday gifts despite it being the summer, knowing that a memento from Winterwood will be cherished by family and friends. During the Hildreth House Christmas season, the back yard sports a bright red vintage teardrop trailer – a perfect “Merry Christmas” photo op for visiting families. They’ll also host visits with an old-world Father Christmas on the weekends during the holiday season. Cindi and Tom are both from Cape May County and currently live in Wildwood Crest. Keeping it all in the family, their grown children and spouses are also involved in the Winterwood ventures. Tom has been a volunteer firefighter in Wildwood Crest and now his son carries on the tradition. Their seasoned employees will happily show you various treasures, big and small, including ornaments representing occupations, hobbies, family and pets, adding a special, seaside touch to your holiday memories.

Now, as we get ready to celebrate another seaside holiday, we salute the Old House Heroes among us, those who have gone above and beyond to preserve our Wildwood history, a priceless gift meant to be shared right here by the sea…
The Sea Gypsy was built circa 1902 as an inn called “Oak Rene”. A subsequent owner, Prosper Webb, a plumber, raised the house in the 1930s and added a bottom floor with its own beautiful corner entrance. The apartment now houses the innkeepers.

There’s a schooner in the offing, With her topsails shot with fire, And my heart has gone aboard her For the Islands of Desire. I must forth again to-morrow! BY CATHY TCHORNI
n a rare sunny Spring day between two nor-easters, I met with Todd Keininger, co-owner and proprietor of The Sea Gypsy. Todd, a mechanical and electrical engineer, and his wife, Natalie, an art teacher at the Dennis Township School, and artist (and I would add, design genius) transformed a pedestrian rooming house at 209 East Magnolia Avenue into a vision of Victorian loveliness, both formal and comfortable. The title, The Sea Gypsy, is the name of a poem written by American poet, Richard Hovey, who died at the age of 35 in 1900, a poem that conveys the restlessness of a man drawn to the sea. For sailors and landlubbers who wish for the rhythmic waves of the ocean, The Sea Gypsy offers rooms, suites and a carriage house, welcoming and soothing. Just like the name, the rooms are
Todd and Natalie Kienenger, true “Old House Heroes,” have mastered the art of salvaging old houses, and the rich Wildwood history that resides there, while restoring these memory keepers for future generations. They proudly closed on The Sea Gypsy in May 1995. As fate would have it, when they came home from settlement, a couple was waiting outside to rent a room at the old rooming house... a fortuitous sign indeed! Gradually, room by room, floors were stripped, then stained, walls and doors were moved to provide bigger, lighter rooms, some with intriguing doorways into other living spaces. The Bed and Breakfast offers everything from a bedroom and a bath, to suites that include light cooking facilities. The carriage house is a stand-alone rental, ideal for a honeymooning couple. As the Kienengers completed the renovations in 2003, they noticed that properties were being bought around them, torn down and replaced with condos. They had their eye on a two-story Arts and Crafts Style house directly behind theirs, which fronted on Poplar Avenue. It had been condemned after pipes had frozen and burst, destroying the inside. This renovation took them two years because of the extreme deterioration of the building. However, it was another sign of good things to come when the first guests to be hosted was an autumn wedding party. In 2014, the couple purchased a carriage house across the street on Poplar, completing the trio of properties. All are bound together by the distinctive outside rust, honey and forest green color scheme, plus a soft blue on the Poplar properties. The Sea Gypsy is open year around and also rents to families with young children, happily passing on the endless stories it holds from generation to generation.
The Sea Gypsy was originally the “Oak Rene” Inn, built in 1902

Sophie the beautyfull ballerina
“When a star is born They possess a gift or two One of them is this They have the power to make a wish come true When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires will come to you...” @sophieseasilnicki
hen in Wildwood by the sea, you may spot a tan, long-haired beautiful blonde ballerina leaping through the air, twirling aerials across the beach, or happily jogging past every cute lifeguard from North Wildwood to Wildwood Crest. Sophie Sea, the beauty in question, has had sand between her toes since the day she was born. In 1997, as her mother was about to give birth, her grandfather serendipitously signed papers to their charming, beach cottage by the sea. Since then, Sophie, her mother and grandparents travel to the Wildwoods every summer to enjoy an old-fashioned, simple beach routine consisting of pure fun in the sun. “It’s what we work all winter for,” said Sophie’s mother, Stephanie, who teaches dance in West Virginia during the off-season. Sophie Sea’s summer wardrobe consists of as many bathing suits as her winter closet does dance costumes. Shells and shore décor are sprinkled throughout their property, located across from the Hereford Inlet lighthouse. Portraits of Sophie and her beach-themed artwork hang throughout the cottage-- the latest a picture from her 2017 holiday performance with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet at Lincoln Center. On the fridge is a magnet to every Broadway show she’s seen. At 18-months-old, Sophie began dancing at her mother’s dance school. She went to public school until she was 12 years-old, then switched to online classes once she made the commitment to attend Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School. Sophie’s grandparents drove her every day to ballet school, which was located several hours away. Once home, she took her mother’s last dance class and repeat-
Sophie with her furry little sister Gilly
ed the same routine the next day. Stephanie remarked Sophie’s hard work has furthered her dancing career, landing her many roles in ballets, as well as being fortunate to represent the USA in the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition in Switzerland. That opportunity led to a two year study at the pre-professional division of the San Francisco Ballet School. Sophie occasionally takes on small acting roles and has appeared in several episodes of Blue Bloods. This past April, Sophie auditioned for the Radio City Rockettes, where an impressed director invited her, on scholarship, to a one-week summer intensive. The 21-yearold’s dream came true when she was picked to be a Rockette in the 2018 Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Sophie’s future goals are to dance on Broadway and to later become a choreographer. More than a talented ballerina, she’s also a Wildwood girl at heart who likes to boogie board, go on bike rides and play paddleball with her grandmother. The family cherishes their time together, especially time spent in North Wildwood. They value their traditions, which include going to the beach the first day of summer, no matter how miserable the weather. They’re happiest when they arrive at their quaint little cottage with their wide-open calendar, ready to savor every sea-kissed moment. With the holidays upon us, and so many of Sophie’s wishes already coming true, she treasures her family’s beach home more than ever and plans to always return to it and the countless memories it happily holds for her right here by the rhythmic sea… Fly high Sophie Sea...

Christmas on Cardinal Ave. in the Crest
“At Christmas, all roads lead home.” ~author Marjorie Holmes by Meg Corcoran & Dorothy Kulisek If you follow the road leading to the home of Tex and Turchi Bower during the holiday season, you’ll find Christmas has happily taken up residence (with the obligatory reindeer clearly showing Santa the way!) Tex and Turchi, (Turchi being a North Wildwood native and member of the large Jenner family,) take special pride in their festive, seaside home. The house, located at 114 W. Cardinal Ave. in Wildwood Crest, was purchased in the 1930s by Tex’s parents, William and Grace. William, who worked in Philadelphia as a lithographer, would catch the train at the end of Cardinal Avenue (back when only trains traveled on New Jersey Avenue). His grandfather was a Philadelphia fireman and the Christmas home’s original owner, making Tex its 3rd generation home owner. Tex is a retired military man, having served in both the United States Marines and the Army as a first sergeant. He and Turchi have three sons and one daughter, LENA, who sadly passed away. They are the proud grandparents of 11, all of whom love the Christmas house. As the pictures indicate, making the house come alive during the holidays takes months of loving preparation. Numerous trees, including a special one set up for their daughter, along with a collage of photos of her, fill the brightly-lit home, with Christmas villages and boardwalk-themed music boxes each finding a special place. Much of the wooden décor was lovingly made by Tex. Undoubtedly true Christmas lovers; the Bowers even decorate the decorations, wrapping everything in twinkling lights! Naturally, no Wildwood holiday-inspired home would be complete without a mini boardwalk platform, which reminds us all that while Christmas remains in the heart all year long, a home by the sea truly makes for a Wonderful Life!

illiam L. McClurkin was born August 8, 1939 to Jesse and Jessie Mae McClurkin. He was the oldest son, the second of twelve children and spent his childhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1957, following school, William moved to Wildwood, NJ and got a job as a Tile setter. With determination and strength, he eventually formed his own TILE business, working diligently for more than 35 years. His staff consisted of two fulltime employees and one part-time. He also spent over 15 summers as a Wildwood police officer. William’s life changed dramatically in 1967 when he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He was a proud and faithful member of the Eureka Baptist Church in Wildwood and was baptized on March 17th of that year by Rev. Thomas B. Whitfield. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, choir member, and assistant to the pastor until 1973, when he received his next call to pastor Bethel Baptist Church in Atlantic City. At the start of his ministry, William spent six years attending the Garden State Bible School in the Atlantic City area. True to his calling to serve, he organized and presided over the W. L. McClurkin Crusade Team and ran revivals locally and nationwide. In March 1973, the Bethany Baptist Association ordained William at the Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Atlantic City. He pastored the Bethel Baptist Church from September 1973 to April 1980. Always growing, William went on to become the minister at Mount Olive Church in Cape May Courthouse in 1980, a church that began humbly in 1911, with meetings conducted in a rented room in a Whitesboro Hotel. William served there until his death on December 31, 2017. William married Evelyn E. Johnson on February 14, 1987. In addition to his wife, he left behind their seven
William McClurkin was a former Wildwood police officer in the 1960s children, more than twenty grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and the countless memories of a life beautifully lived. In the summer of 2018, to commemorate his beautiful spirit, the township and church congregation celebrated the life of “Uncle Brother,” a name affectionately given to him in his early Wildwood days, with Mayor Michael Clark declaring July 22 as Rev. William McClurkin Day in Middle Township, naming a portion of West Atlantic Avenue in his honor. While Reverand William McClurkin was consecrated as Bishop on June 14, 2014 in Acworth, Georgia, he remains a proud part of the history we hold dear right here in Wildwood by the Sea.

T
he North Wildwood Union Church grew out of the North Wildwood Union Sunday School which was organized on Dec. 8, 1907 and operated out of the North Wildwood Public School building, later known as the “Hazelhurst,” on 17th Avenue. For twenty years the work was carried on under the auspices of the Sunday School. All Christians were welcomed to participate in the activities of the school without respect to denominational affiliation and, in this same broad spirit, preaching and gospel meetings were held from time to time. With the opening of the chapel building at 18th and Central Ave. (Aug. 18, 1921) Mr. A.F. Hirst conducted worship each Sunday morning and evening until March 22, 1926. Rev. Dr. Charles L. Hunter, former pastor of Baptist Churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, was called as pastor. At a service held November 23, 1927, combining a Thanksgiving meeting with the observance of the twentieth anniversary of the Sunday School, Dr. Hunter announced that the processes were about complete for the organization of a Union Church. These places together with a proposed constitution and by-laws were presented to the School at the regular business meeting on December 14th 1927. By vote of the Sunday School the Pastor was authorized to call a congregational meeting and proceed with the organization of the church. This was done, and on Monday evening January 16, 1928 the church was officially organized . In September of 1937 the name of the church was modified to North Wildwood Bible Church. In January 1950 the name of the church was changed to Faith Chapel. In the early sixties it became Faith Bible Presbyterian Chapel during which time Mr. George Forbes was ordained as an elder in that denomination. It returned to independent status in the later sixties as Central Bible Church. In January, 2002 the congregation officially called Rev. Jim Allay to be its pastor and requested the Presbytery of New Jersey to receive it into the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. On March 10, 2002 Central Bible was recognized as a particular church of the Presbytery of New Jersey of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

Moses baskets may be popular among young mothers today, but they’ve been around for a long time, well, since Baby Moses was placed in one and hidden in the reeds alongside of the Nile River. The baskets are designed for sleeping newborn babies for the first few months, providing a cozy space for infants alongside their mother. But did you know Wildwood, being the ultimate storyteller, has its own special, Moses baby-basket story to tell, thanks to Jim Wheaton, Wildwood-born native, Dr. Mace Baby and the keeper of his mother Margaret’s basket? Jim shared his “basket story” at our Annual “Baby” Photo Reunion this summer. On April 15, 1932, he became the first of many babies to be placed inside that basket. His mother shared the basket with many women ~ friends and family alike, and it continues to this day to welcome newborns, giving the basket its own part in the Wildwoods history. The Wheaton family also shares a long history in the Wildwoods, dating back to NW Mayor Harry Wheaton in the early 1900s... Stay tuned for their future Sun story!

This past summer, while out delivering The SUN early one morning, editor Dorothy Kulisek casually snapped this photo of North Wildwood’s own Ellio Pizza, owner of A & L P, and posted it to her Wildwood Sun Facebook page, not realizing the positive attention it would quickly receive. Within a matter of hours, this handsome guy appeared over local newsfeeds, and within days reached far and wide to over 25K fans. Ellio, who can be found every day hard at work in the restaurant his parents, “A”lfonzo and “L”ina “P”izza founded in 1953, enjoyed his “Facebook fame,” which proved that his name, combined with his classic good looks, makes this hardworking octogenarian one of Wildwood’s most famous treasures…

Aunts Shirley & Sylvia by Lana Turner MacDonald and Carol Turner Leeper

My sister Carol & I share many fond memories of growing up in the early days of Anglesea. If you spent time here in the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s, you most likely went to Sylvia’s Restaurant or D & S Cold Cuts, owned by our aunt Sylvia Gerner and our aunt Shirley Palmer. In 1966, Aunt Shirley and our mother, Doris Calamaro, were partners in D & S Cold Cuts. In 1982, mom decided she wanted to open a gift shop, so she turned her half of the business over to her sister Shirley. Aunt Shirley operated D & S until 2002, when our mom sold the building (which now houses Joe Joe’s Pizza). Aunt Shirley looked forward to seeing all the children and parents every summer. Many of those children even called her Aunt Shirley. She watched many of those kids grow up and then bring their kids to her store where she loved taking many photos of “her kids”. She loved them all and they loved her. Sadly, Aunt Shirley died on September 15, 2017 and is sorely missed. We miss seeing her riding her bike, walking the boardwalk and sitting outside our cousin Joe’s Curiosity Shop. She was a Dr. Margaret Mace baby, living her whole life in North Wildwood and beautifully left her mark in Wildwood’s history. Contributing to that full memory book, Sylvia’s was a wonderful little restaurant on the corner of 1st and Olde New Jersey Avenues, where The Establishment now resides. Aunt Sylvia served breakfast and lunch and re-opened for the late-night crowd. After the bars closed, she would have hungry people forming a long line. Many agreed she had the best creamed dried beef they ever ate!
Aunt Sylvia
Aunt Sylvia married George Gerner, the grandson of George Redding, a former mayor of North Wildwood and state senator. Their marriage didn’t last, but they had a daughter, Joan, who would later have her own daughter, Theresa. Joan tragically passed away at 36 years old and a year later Theresa passed away from childhood leukemia. During such a tragic time in her life, Aunt Sylvia found the love of her life. He was a retired firefighter from Philadelphia named “Blackie” Bell, who, unfortunately, died about two years after Theresa. Most people didn’t know the heartache Aunt Sylvia endured in such a short time span, but her contributions here in our seaside community are well remembered. She died on October 9, 1996. Offering his own much-appreciated services in town, Nick “The Barber” Matacena was Aunt Sylvia’s landlord who came to Anglesea in 1929. Nick was a kind and caring man who befriended many in the neighborhood, including Aunt Sylvia. Nick’s wife died in the mid 1950’s. They had no children. Many years after his wife’s death, Nick took in a local man by the name of Harry (Diapers) Thomas. Harry owned a home on the 100 block of West Chestnut Avenue (it is still there but remodeled). Harry had difficulty taking care of himself, so Nick took him in. They were great company for each other. Harry died in the mid 1970’s. One morning in February 1978, Nick’s barber pole was not on, immediately alerting everyone that something was terribly wrong. He was a barber right up to the day he died. We fondly remember him and hope to one day proudly share more about our Anglesea roots and all the memories they inspire. Look for more of Lana’s memories to come in The Sun. . .

Joey, Joey, Ryan ~Summer ‘18
Wildwood by-the-sea just has a way of connecting people in the sweetest of ways. In the latest case of ‘Sun Serendipity’, Maria Hoover was having a conversation with Dan Karvounis in his boardwalk store, Eleanor’s Gifts & Variety about a photo she had seen in The Sun, which just happened to feature an old photo of his mom, Eleanor. As fate would have it, Eleanor just happened to be in the store! This, naturally, led to another photo op of the two of them above, something we here at The Sun can never get enough of, with new friends reflecting on sweet days gone by…
Joey, Joey, Ryan ~Summer ‘07
Friends Joey Ebert and Joey and Ryan Comas, members of the Philadelphia Quartette Swim team, shared their “Now and Then” photos with The Sun (wisely knowing we love all things past and present), flashing the same winning smiles circa 2007 and 2018, which found them protecting our beaches and our beachgoers in their roles as lifeguards together for the Wildwood Beach Patrol.
MaryLou Trottnow (center) surrounded by her children. . . youngest to oldest (L-R), Meg, David, Lynn, Mark, Richard, Maryann & Albert The Trottnow clan enjoyed catching up on The Sun during their family reunion this summer, except for MaryLou... since it was “old news” to her, having read it cover to cover and back again by that time :-) She was simply in her glory being surrounded by her kids
5.6 lbs and 3.5lbs flounders caught by the Captain himself this summer. Old guys still can catch some dinner! Hello and Welcome fellow Anglers, As the fishing season begins its final swan song, much could be said about the 2018 season. The image of a roller coaster ride comes to my mind. My own description of the fishing season would be the drum fish kept a good beat, the seabass were the bass-est, and the flounder were flat. No pun intended. The offshore fishing was reported to be fair early. Late summer in the northern canyons the marlin were off the charts. The constant summer winds became a daily issue for many anglers. The bluefish seemed to increase in numbers, but the size suggest they were fresh out of the nursery. The increased numbers of trigger fish and Jacks around wrecks would have you think you were fishing in the South Carolina’s instead of South Jersey. If you are planning on Stripers in early November you will need a time machine to take you back to 1993. Stripers now show up around Christmas apparently working out a deal to help Santa. Reflecting back on the past season brings the reality that fishing resembles the classic saying “With the good comes some bad. I managed to catch some nice fish this year and feel fortunate to have that opportunity and enjoyed the experiences of the 2018
season. Fishing often personifies life in many ways. Fishing requires persistence while learning from your mistakes and failures. The blending of those experiences and trying new methods will often end with success. Fishing shines the light brightly on the journey not the success. Time spent on the water allows your senses to become flooded with the beauty of Mother Nature. It often creates the feeling of a spiritual connection with your soul and much perspective about you in the world. I realize at the end of many days on the water how blessed we are to have this amazing wonder in our backyard. The friendships and memories created will last forever. Traditionally I include my Christmas Wish List in this article. This year’s list has the following holiday wishes: I pray that Marine Fisheries would create a plan that would receive acceptance by all in the sport, in particular the group that provides the most return in dollars to the economy. RECREATIONAL ANGLERS. Hopefully, your stocking will be full of items to catch the future lunkers that will be calling you next year. I hope we all can take time to introduce the youth to the beauty and the importance of the natural resources. They will be thankful and become good stewards of our land in the future. May the love and harmony of the Christmas season carry thru the year. We are so blessed to live in these United States of America. When the good Lord finds me in his net, I pray he will qualify me as a Keeper.

WILDWOOD MEMORIES
CLASS OF 1961 by Jinny Wood
What an exciting senior year for me it was! On November 19, 1960, WHS had its first Homecoming Weekend with Sandy Bunal selected as the Queen and Tom Ekstrom as her escort. The bon fire was held on Friday night behind Maxwell Field. The football team won three championships: Cape-Atlantic, South Jersey Group I, and Group I State Champs!! Our Senior class trip was two fun-filled days in Washington, D.C. - touring, sightseeing and snapping photos... oh the parties in our hotel rooms! ... And, not to be outdone, our basketball team won the South Jersey Group I Championship! Not to be further outdone... the Track and Field team were the Cape-Atlantic Title Winners. What a year to remember! After graduation I kept up with fellow classmates by saving news clippings of their weddings and other achievements, tucking them away in my yearbook...

Jonathan and Sarah James House c. 1860
FEATURED HOUSE for 2018 - The Jonathan and Sarah James House - c. 1860 The 29th Historic Dennisville Christmas House Tour will take place on Saturday, December 15th from 4PM-8PM. On the 3rd Saturday of December a minimum of 8 beautifully decorated 18th and 19th century historic homes, as well as several public buildings and 2 churches, are open to the public. Please think about starting your holiday season with a festive glimpse of history in Dennisville at Christmas time! The Jonathan and Sarah James House was built about 1860 in a vernacular interpretation of the Greek Revival style. The main portion of this 2-story frame house is three bays wide and two bays deep with a center entrance. The side gabled roof has overhanging eaves and a boxed cornice with returns in the gable ends. The eaves are decorated with 1890 flat jig saw cut trim in a tear-drop shape. The front door has a surround of reeded pilasters that support a cornice with a dentiled pediment. Of special interest to visitors is the side sun room with the many multi-paned windows. The house has survived the foreclosure process and its new owners are giving the house plenty of well deserved attention. In keeping with an old fashioned tradition, the South Dennis United Methodist Church will sponsor a soup and sandwich supper from 3PM until food runs out. The price is $8. for adults and $3.50 for children under 12. The Middletones Carolers (Middle Township High School a cappella vocal quartet) will perform through the village in period costume. Tickets are available online for $15. at www.dhhoa.org. Ticket center will open on the day of the tour at the Dennisville Post Office at 3:30. For more info, go to www.dhhoa.org or call 609.861.1338

Blessings on the Beach BY ANNE STILES The calming effects of the waves, repetitive and constant, rolling in and onto the beach The view from the top of the ramp of the colorful array of beach umbrellas which resembles a large meadow of wild flowers The assortment of flags, the American to show patriotism, and others to display allegiance to our Armed Forces and sports teams, also to support our Police forces
did you know? “She sells seashells by the seashore” is about a real person? Mary Anning was an 1800s Englishwoman from a poor family who dug up fossil shells on the beach and sold them to make money. She made many important discoveries for the scientific community that changed what people thought about historic life, but they stole the credit for most of her work. Her life story was so inspirational that a song was written about her, and we still use the lyrics as a Tongue Twister today... She sells seashells down by the Seashore
This Christmas for us will mark 62 How blessed I have been to have shared 61 with you In my 90th year I know the score yet, I’ll pray to God for many more Though his denial would make me sad I’ll still thank his for those I’ve had Merry Christmas!!
The children quickly finding friends to play with because they are not judgmental The acts of kindness of the people who will assist elderly people and people with disabilities The feeling of amazement when you watch an osprey dive down and catch a fish, then fly over you with the fish in his talons Arriving to the beach after attending mass, in a packed to the rafters’ gym at NWCHS, celebrated by a exuberant, dynamic and inspirational priest from Haiti, whose sermon leaves you with a joyful heart! Seeing the joy of a child jumping the waves, and the giant smile on the faces of the grandparent holding their hand Every day is a gift; however, a Beach Day is an extra bonus from God!

The beautiful rescue of the white dove who loved Wildwood...
A
s anyone who has ever visited Wildwood by the sea knows, it is the ultimate shore destination, so much so that even our feathered friends agree. One such friend, a white dove (nameless but obvious Wildwood lover) was spotted by Thomas Morgan and his daughter flying around Seapointe Village for several days. They noticed he was tagged with a green and blue band, with writing on the green band and, thinking the bird belonged to someone, tried their best to get a clear image of the tags, ultimately discovering the numbers 14609. They then called the ARPU (American Racing Pigeon University) in Oklahoma and learned the person who raised the bird was New Yorker John Seton, who gave the wandering bird to friend and Cape May resident Dave Robinson. The bird was about 10 weeks old and had been

by Meg Corcoran scared away by a red-tailed hawk, flying the short distance to the safety of our scenic shores. While waiting for the owner to come and retrieve our temporary tourist, the Morgans tried to catch him with a towel but he flew onto the roof of a townhouse, eventually flying down to a lower level, where his just-arrived owner was able to carefully retrieve him. Hungry and dehydrated, our Wildwood visitor enjoyed a good meal and then was happily on his way home, having checked out Seapoint Village and ready to share all he had learned with approximately 300 gray racing pigeons and about a dozen rare white (wedding) pigeon/doves awaiting his homecoming.

“Our memories of the sea linger long after the waves have washed our footprints away...”
y emories of by Diana Benero Copeland
Diana at about age 10 or so with her parents, Bob and Mary Benero in the lobby of Surf Hotel circa 1956
The Surf Hotel after the remodel circa mid 50s.
After the Benero’s sold The Surf Hotel, the new owners renamed it Yorkshire Terrace and the apartments behind it the Seagull Apts. They were demolished in 1997
When I would tell my friends that I grew up in a hotel, they called me “Eloise” and told me of their visions of me sliding down hotel banisters. When I was young, I was quite precocious and went through many nannies hired to look after me while my mom ran the hotel. But the true story is that the hotel was actually built for me. Built in 1948, it was the first Mom and Pop small hotel in North Wildwood (21 rooms), appropriately named The Surf Hotel, located at 22nd and Surf. For as long as I can remember, my parents told me it was built for me. They were older when they had me in 1946, their only child, and were used to traveling and staying in nice hotels. My parents continued that lifestyle but soon found out that children were not allowed at the hotels they had previously stayed in or in hotels they were hoping to stay in, and boarding houses were the only option for families. That really got to my Dad, no one was going to tell him where he could stay or not stay. He didn’t like boarding houses and was not about to stay in one just because he now had a child. So, he said, “We’ll build our own hotel where families are welcomed.” That is just what they did. They purchased a few lots on the west side Surf Ave. between 21st & 22nd, one for the hotel, one for the parking lot and one to prevent another hotel being built next to them. I will never forget when dad, mom and I would drive to North Wildwood at the beginning of the season. The car would pass over the old rickety wooden bridge going clackity clackity and we would smell what I called the “clam smell,” letting us know we were close---and then that long drive down Surf Ave inching closer to the hotel. In the early years, there wasn’t much else around, so we could see it from a distance. My parents had to stop at Mr. Tannebaums, their attorney, to pick up the key. Finally, we got to the hotel and I would run all around. I was home! (like Eloise!)
SURF H O T E L
I remember rainy days would be baking days for cookies and cakes. Since the hotel was seasonal, we didn’t have heating or air conditioning, so in May when we went to get it ready for the season, there would be rainy, cool days, and my mom would use the oven to heat up our little kitchen. The hotel did have a landline phone and since we were the closest place to have a phone, our neighbors would ask if they could use it. What I found interesting was how many motels had the wives operating them while the husbands worked their jobs back home, only coming down on the weekends. My dad worked at the Navy Yard and would drive down Friday nights for the weekend. My mom had a dress shop in Philadelphia but would close it for the summer to run the hotel. Fast forward a few years in the early 50s when the hotel went through a remodel. I remember that being a big deal! The hotel was very boxy, designed after the then-current style of the much larger hotels but there was a style revolution happening with new Futuristic styles ---known later in history as “DooWop” ... So, gone was the flat front of the hotel with its little square windows and in its place was a set of very large floor-to-ceiling angled windows with jalousies on the sides with glass bricks around the front doors. It now had more of a Jetson look than before. Mom also put a pay phone in the lobby for the guests’ convenience. Our hotel was very family oriented with the same guests returning year after year. We would sit out on the front porch and talk with the guests and people-watch as clusters of families walked down 22nd to “the boards.” Weekends were especially busy in Wildwood. Cars were buzzing up and down Surf Ave. on Friday and Saturday nights. The scene was even more special with the neon lights from all the motel signs that had sprung up around us. By this time, the Surf had its own futuristic neon sign out front. Across the street

S U R F H OT E L was The Grey Manor and one of my favorites, the Flame Inn, where the sign was a tall, flickering neon candle. Our hotel had no vacancies starting early on Fridays, but my Mom kept the neon ‘vacancy’ sign on. I didn’t understand that until she explained it was her way of helping out the other motels that still had rooms. People appreciated that, too, so that they wouldn’t have to keep driving around to find a room. A good life lesson for me. I had good childhood “summer friends” like Mary Teresa (Tweetsie) Soens-- she and her family spent the summer in a house on the beach block of 22nd, known as Undertakers Row. I think it was named that because the string of houses was owned by Mr. Kinney, (Mary Teresa’s grandfather) an undertaker in Philadelphia. Those houses were two stories and a very funny, nice lady named Frances Starr lived on the top floor of the Soens. She would tell us the funniest jokes. Another good friend was Ava Maria Carpenter---she stayed with her grandparents for the summer at their house on 21st near Surf. Her grandfather’s name was Rocky. He had a boat and would take us for rides out on the bay. We all played kid games together and loved putting on plays. Tweetsie had brothers and boxer dogs. Another who would join in was Johnny Ryan, whose family had a lovely large white house right at the end of Surf Ave. before you got on the ramp to the boardwalk. I always thought the Ryans were really rich because they had a water sprinkler system for their lawn! Ava’s parents owned a luncheonette at the end of 22nd. You could step off the beach and right onto the diner’s property. I loved spending time there--spinning on the stools at the counter and listening to the jukebox. One of my favorite songs one summer was “You Belong to Me.” These days, whenever I hear that song, it takes me right back. When we got a little older, we were able to go on the boardwalk by ourselves and enjoy the rides, movies, skee ball and wheels of chance. I especially remember the caterpillar ride and the little cars that you drove on your own under the Flyer. I enjoyed the Jungleland ride but was afraid of the Mighty Mouse roller coaster. We loved the Fun House, but we
girls always made sure to wear Bermuda shorts or clam diggers instead of skirts if we were going on that walk-through type ride. When you stepped on a floorboard, a blast of air would come up--well you get the idea. On rainy days, we would head out to a matinee. I remember seeing “The Wizard of Oz” for the first time at the Regent Theater. I loved all the movie theaters in Wildwood. On special occasions, meaning when my cousins would visit, we would go to Zaberers for dinner. It was such a bustling, exciting place! On some weekends, when my Dad was in town, we would go to Schumann’s for ice cream sundaes. If you finished the whole thing, you would get a certificate. After Mass on Sundays, we would have breakfast at Groff’s... Loved their black bottom pie. I loved Mack’s pizza, Laura’s Fudge and Douglass Candies... so glad they still have their iconic plaid rug and boxes. I remember how I would bike up to Larkin’s to bring back some hoagies--they were the best... and getting ice cream sodas at the pharmacy luncheonette--the one that used to be on Pacific near Central Ave. Another favorite restaurant was “Pierre’s” on the boardwalk around the corner from Groff’s. The restaurant was so cute with its French theme. It had the best waffles. When I became a teenager, I would go to Starlight Ballroom to dance --before or after getting a lime rickey, that is. Dick Clark was the DJ at Starlight. I started dancing on Bandstand in my freshman year of high school and soon became a regular on the show. It wasn’t always just fun and games growing up in a family business. When I was older, I took on assorted hotel responsibilities. I was the writer in the family, so my mom had me correspond with guests inquiring about reservations. I also greeted the guests, was the chambermaid in the early slow season and did my share of painting and other assorted little jobs around the hotel. I am so grateful for the experiences I had. My parents built a hotel just for me because they wanted families to enjoy their vacations. I visited the Boyer Museum a few summers ago and met a gentleman who had done PR for area musicians. He remem-

I did just that and the musician had tears in his eyes. He remembered how gracious my mom was. I am so thankful for the wonderful legacy of my parents and The Surf Hotel. My parents sold the hotel in 1963. The new owners added a pool and renamed it the Seagull Apartments. It was torn down c. 1997 and replaced with condos. Fortunately, I could never replace the countless memories of my Wildwood summers.

My sister Gia was a talented, bright, strong-willed girl whose life was cut tragically short when she was just 13 years old and I was 11. This year marks her 20th anniversary. In honor of Gia’s anniversary, I’m setting her wings free, to be the beautiful spirit she always was. Sadly, I have made the difficult decision to no longer have the annual Gift for Gia, which had become a loving tribute to my much-loved sister, who never wanted for anything. She had me, her proud little sister. Gia was love; and a force to be reckoned with. She could touch people’s lives without them even knowing it, so much like our mom, who continues to touch people’s lives to this day. Now, I want my sister Gia, as well as my mom and dad, to be proud of me and know I will always be the best I can be for them! Rest in Peace my dear family. . . Love, Mia

Meg the Movie Buff Goes to Hollywood 2018 WINTER MOVIE GUIDE by Meg Corcoran
Mary Poppins Returns to the festive
town of Wildwood, NJ alongside friends, old and new, searching for a bit of seaside sanctuary (and Santa Claus). Aquaman is naturally intrigued by our vast ocean, and, despite the temperature, is boogie-board bound, waving a cheery hello to Holmes and Watson, who are on the case of that elusive Santa. Ben is Back just in time for the holidays, hoping to find healing on our therapeutic shores. Never looking for, but, of course in need of redemption, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is trying to hate the scenery but reluctantly finds his grouchy mood lightening up along the coast. While our cast settles in for a long winter’s nap, Wildwood style (Tops on everyone’s Wish List), don’t forget to check your local listings for release date changes… After her godfather (Morgan Freeman) gives her a mysterious key, young Clara (Mackenzie Foy) finds herself carried to an enchanted land (strangely sans scenic ocean view) within The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (opened November 2nd). Intrigued by news about the ‘Pinch the GrYnch Boardwalk 5K Run, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch, opens November 9th) is determined to keep the Whos and all of Whoville, along with the spirit of Christmas, from disrupting his solitary life. Within the Wizarding World, it’s 1920s Paris, and the Fantastic Beasts: (over) The Crimes of Grindelwald (opens November 16th) are involved in the adventures of magizoologist Newt (Eddie Redymayne) and his wizard company (including Dan Fogler and Katherine Waterston), who just can’t wait to experience the magic within the upcoming Greater Wildwood Jaycees Christmas Parade. Six years after his first arcade adventure, and after many “educational” visits to Gateway 26, Ralph Breaks the Internet (voice of John C. Reilly, opens November 23rd) when he and friend Vanellope (voice of Sarah Silverman) find a wi-fi router. With the help of trainer Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), champion Creed (II, Michael B. Jordan, opens November 21st) prepares for his next formidable opponent in the ring, taking much-needed
mental health Seawall strolls. On Christmas Eve, troubled 19-year-old Ben is Back (Lucas Hedges, opens December 7th) for the Family Holiday Celebration and welcomed home by mom Holly (Julia Roberts), who struggles to keep their family intact. Danger strikes, and reality is turned upside, sending Spider-Man into the Spider-verse (voice of Jake Johnson, opens December 14) joining animated forces with the Spider-men occupying those dimensions (including Nicolas Cage) with all involved finding time for the Byrne Plaza Christmas Tree Christmas Lighting Ceremony and the Hereford Inlet Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Just in time for the all-new Christmas on the Plaza, Mary Poppins Returns (Emily Blunt, opens December 21st), bringing a bit of enchantment into the adult lives of Jane, Michael and his children. Also starts Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. The comedic adventures of Holmes and Watson (Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, opens December 21st) are highlighted in the latest crime-fighting tale, where they get easily distracted at the Spirit Brands Cheerleading Festival. Discovering he’s heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, Aquaman (Jason Momoa, opens December 21st) is forced into a heroic adventure, fortunately finding inspiration courtesy of the Battle of the Boards Basketball Tournament. As the temperature continues to drop, the frosty sea creates the perfect setting for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, who have finally found the magical kingdom they’ve been searching for. Creed II is getting the best workout sprinting on the boardwalk, passing Ralph (who) Breaks the Internet but forms an unbreakable bond with our finest off-season arcades. Spider-Man (steps out) into the Spider-verse while enjoying his time in our seaside universe, web slinging from Anglesea to Diamond Beach. The Fantastic Beasts: (forget) The Crimes of Grindelwald in favor of fresh salty air, knowing it would be criminal not to appreciate every minute of their Hollywood break. Our holiday cast shares that grateful disposition (which looks good on everyone) as they sail into a brand-new year by the sea…

Proposal on 18TH ST. CANAL by Gina Prickril
N39°.00” W74°.48”. “The best place on earth”. That’s how my nephew, Kevin Tinneny, Jr. described it to me. My nephew lives in Oahu and is a lifeguard on a squad that serves all the beaches made famous by the surfer boy bands of the 60’s: Waimea Bay, Bonzai Pipeline, and Sunset Beach just to name a few. So, imagine my surprise when those same coordinates which he had tattooed onto his foot led me to a point on earth located right here in North Wildwood. To be more specific, if you put these coordinates in your GPS unit, you will find yourself right smack in the middle of Otten’s Canal, somewhere between our family’s home and Canal Side Boat Rentals at 18th and Delaware Avenues. Nearly a quarter century ago, Kevin and his cousin (my other nephew), Michael Raila, spent their days at the shore wrapping bait and cleaning boats at Canal Side. When they completed their work, they were sure to play a few tricks on Mike Lanza, the owner. Our family’s house is on the other side of the canal, so we have known the Lanza family for many years. Mike enjoyed teaching Kevin and Michael about life on the water. How to start a manual start engine, how not to flood an engine, how to tie a fishing rig onto your rod, the best way to net a keeper. When they were at our house, Kevin and Michael would cast nets for minnows, cast lines for snapper blues and reel in all that life near salt water can offer. The list of what those boys got into is endless. So are the memories. So, it is fitting that Kevin chose this exact location, this best place on earth, to propose to the love of his life, Chelsea Genova. They had each traveled nearly half way around the world to live on Oahu but Kevin still managed to find his own Jersey Girl – Chelsea hails from

Galloway Township, New Jersey. On July 28, 2018, Kevin gave Chelsea a tour of Otten’s Canal on his paddle board and made his best place on earth even better. A hush fell over the family as they disembarked the paddle board; Kevin dropped to one knee on our floating dock and presented Chelsea with a ring and a question. She said yes! Both families celebrated the good news. Soon-to-be Best Man Michael Raila toasted the happy couple. Mike Lanza sat back and enjoyed the moment and recalled the memories, more than happy to be part of the setting. Sunset was on the horizon and Otten’s Canal was aglow with heaven’s light show. Who could have imagined? By the way – those coordinates above? I caught a glimpse of them tattooed on the shoulder of my nephew, Michael. Birds of a feather, two peas in a pod, wait, here’s a better one: rod and reel. These two nephews of mine – still living the dream in North Wildwood!

I brought The Sun to the Keys not just for a photo op, but to see how many people recognized it where I went. People asked to see it in Marathon, Key West, Key Largo, Miami, Ft.Lauderdale and various parts of Palm Beach. Many people recognized it and got excited to see that I brought a piece of their life with me, through you. I can’t wait for the next edition when I bring it to Disney, and on a flight in a real WWII fighter plane. The Sun truly travels around the world! ~Phil Schmeer
Ed Gorczyca never forgets to pack The Sun..here he is on the final leg of his East Coast road trip this summer
The Branner / Thomas family made sure to take The Sun to Virginia Beach for summer vacation. Mary DeMaio took The Sun along for a trip to Barcelona for a friend’s wedding. This picture is at the famous market: Boqueria en Barcelona.
Perfect Cutz patrons, David Richart and MaryLou McClosky enjoy reading The Sun while waiting for haircuts. (Look for MaryLou’s old Wildwood photos that she sent in, featured in the summer issue:-)
