Oh Lord, how I yearn for a cottage by the sea Surely I would like to surround it with your beautiful trees.

Maybe pink and blue Hydrangea to bloom in June.

Crepe Myrtle and Rose of Sharon with their heavenly scents, to blend with a breeze from the sea.

Please take the gardens at Hereford Light and plant them next to me, so I can be reminded of the feeling of being in your presence outdoors by the sea.

A porch with two chairs, one for you and one for me... it would be grand if we could sit and chat about all the things you made in the sea.

Then we could wander down the path over the dunes where we can see the sky and the sea blend together in different shades of blue.

The magnificence of the sea will always be a marvelous wonder to me. So, Thank You Lord for the many wonderful days I have spent in Wildwood by the Sea!

Hello dear Sun Readers!

When nearing my final deadlines, I can’t help but ponder the thought of being an editor and the responsibility it carries. It’s a bit daunting to comprehend.

So I honestly don’t focus on the size of my readership because I create the paper mostly alone... (but always in the presence of God... ) fully enjoying the gifts He’s given me to bless others.

As I set out to work everyday, after my beautiful morning walks along the seawall, I realize it is this very expanse of sea, sun and sky that inspires The Sun... it talks to me... it says, ‘try to capture me, try to tap into my mystery.’ I paint it and photograph it, and tell stories that revolve around it because it has become a part of me spiritually. I acknowledge my part in it as a calling, even if I don’t entirely comprehend it. I only know that it requires that I work with a standard of excellence and sincerity.

One particular morning, I read a devotion that featured a favorite childhood fable called The Wind and the Sun.It brings us to ask ourselves, when influencing or inspiring others, which approach works best?

To blow harder and harder like the wind, or to shine brighter and brighter like the sun?

The Fable: The wind and the sun decided to have a contest one day to see which of them was the strongest. When they saw a man walking down the street wearing a warm winter coat, they agreed that whoever could get the man’s coat off would truly be the strongest.

The wind thought this would be a piece of cake, so he began to blow with all his might. But the harder he blew, the tighter the man held onto his coat. Eventually, the wind gave up, and the sun took a turn. The sun came out from behind a cloud and began to shine brighter and brighter. As the man got hotter and hotter, he finally took off the coat of his own accord. The wind had to concede that the sun was indeed stronger.

So the moral of the story is obvious... we are to Shine! We were made for sunny days! Knowing every summer has its own story to tell, and how much we love telling stories, I can’t wait for you to enjoy your time by the sea reading this issue of The Sun. It has been created over the long fall and winter months for your reading pleasure... with rays of light and a touch of sea spray left on every page from those morning walks... because salt & light make the most beautiful combination.

A bit of breezy chat about the island’s happenings from Labor Day 2021 through Memorial Day 2022 “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.” While the last two years of 2020-21 may not have been our best years ever, we head into 2022 Roaring Twenties style, ready to celebrate by the sea, with nothing but love in our hearts for all-things-Wildwood.

A colorful fall led to a bright holiday season by the sea. Improvements were underway in our seaside town from north to south, with construction and upgrades occurring in anticipation of the Summer of 2022. Happily, our alwaysentertaining events were being planned with one thing in mind: Fun in the Sun! While you were excitedly planning your seaside summer, here’s a look at the noteworthy events that occurred While You Were Away…

WEATHER REPORT English writer John Ruskin declared, “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces up, snow is exhilarating; there is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.”

We seasiders couldn’t agree more…the weather along the coast is many things but never boring and always beautiful…

Lovely Weather accompanied September’s events. The sun shined some Luck on the Irish, Classic Cars packed Pacific Ave and hungry crowds arrived for Seafarer’s in the Crest.

An Awesome October was had by all beginning with perfect weather for TROG. October 14-15 witnessed the best, summer-like fall days!! One perfect weekend after another occurred in September into October, but the streak was inevitably (and thankfully, temporarily) broken when a mild Nor’easter arrived Saturday evening, Oct. 9th, lasting thru the night of Oct. 12th, causing beach erosion.

While October 23rd was a Perfect Night for a Bonfire on the Beach, the month ended with Coastal Storms.

November by the sea brought a blast of chilly air, then a most gratifying Indian Summer for Thanksgiving.

A Festive December was cause for celebration. All was mild & calm for the holidays as well as our Santa-approved

events, parades and another cozy bonfire on the beach. Then came January…

New Year’s weekend was very warm but foggy and soggy. Our first snowfall (12”) greeted January 3rd, with up to 40 mph wind gusts. With January 7th came Snow #2 (much lighter than its predecessor).

The temperatures may have hovered around 22* for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge, but organizer John Lynch announced an amazing $234,000 was raised for SONJ. Snow #3 (also light) occurred on January 20th, adding a bit of scenery for the moving of the Shamrock House.

In the Not So Light Snow Department: On January 29th, Winter Nor’easter Snowstorm Kenan (Snow #4 for anyone who’s keeping track) swirled in with high winds, leaving up to 15” of snow along with high drifts. Fortunately, it didn’t cause any anticipated major power outages. The major concern of all these winter nor’easters is the damage to our beaches, which have been showing significant erosion since early fall.

FYI: Last year’s Farmer’s Almanac wise weather folklore said, “for every August fog, there will be winter snow. “ There were 4-5 foggy mornings, but who’s counting? They also predicted a snowy eastern seaboard.

Then there was FEBRUARY: A Polar coaster trend brought temps ranging from the 20s to the 50s! Thankfully, the mild temps and salty air helped melt all that snow!

Love was in the mixed-up air Valentine’s Weekend with a 60° beach Saturday followed by a cold, wintery snow day.

March proved to be the proverbial windy month. . . it came in and it went out like a Lion.

April stayed windy, bringing showers, along with an unexpected Nor’eastern that arrived on April 18th following a stretch of lovely weather for the Easter holiday.

For May, we experienced the worst Nor’eastern on Mother’s Day Weekend.

Cavalier We hope to see you chillin’ on the beach next summer, Toes in the sand, Drink in one hand and The Sun in the other!

Chief Cavalier made the following statement on Nov. 18, 2021, stating that “I am hanging up my whistle and retiring from the Beach Patrol after 48 summers. I was a rookie lifeguard in 1966 and got drafted in the Army and served 2 years in Germany. I came back to the Beach Patrol in 1969 and took a brief hiatus in the early 80’s, when I married my wife Joan. It has been a great journey with many great memories and friends met on the Beach Patrol. I want to thank all the lifeguards who have worked with me and for me all those years. NWBP’s safety record speaks for the great job they have all performed. I want to thank North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello, Rosenello North Wildwood City Council, and North Wildwood City Administrator Ron Simone for all their support. I would also like to give a big thank you to my wife Joanie for all her support throughout the years.”

A NEW NWBP CHIEF IN TOWN On February 2nd, after advertising the position vacancy in December and interviewing several highly qualified applicants, the City named Bill Ciavarelli as the next Chief of the North Wildwood Beach Patrol. Bill has been with the North Wildwood Beach Patrol for 31 years, serving as Captain since 2011 under past Chief Tony Cavalier.

“Chief Ciavarelli has been an asset to the Beach Patrol for the last several decades, serving in every title from lifeguard to Captain,” said North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello.

Rosenello “I am grateful for all of the highly qualified candidates who shared their vision for the City of North Wildwood Beach Patrol. I am confident that the experience, energy, enthusiasm and passion for the profession that Chief Ciavarelli brings to the job will best serve the Beach Patrol, and the City of North Wildwood.”

FALL’S SEASIDE PROJECTS Falling on the lengthy To Do list was the State DOT back bay Dredging - dredging the mouth of Beach Creek Channel.

STILL ON THE WAIT LIST: The existing bulkhead from 5th to 7th Avenues was expected to be removed and realigned in a manner that optimizes space. The goal being to get rid of any jagged edges, one example being the 5th Avenue section of bulkhead. After a new bulkhead is constructed, rocks will be placed in front of the bulkhead, very similar to what you see today on 1st or 2nd Avenues.

The proposed design calls for rocks to be placed as far south as 7th Avenue.

“We have approved the final design and are waiting on the USACE/NJDEP”, explained the Mayor of North Wildwood, Patrick Rosenello, adding, “this will be a NJDEP project, so it is on their timeline.” Once the project is completed, homes from 3rd to 7th Avenues will have an extra layer of protection against storms.

SAND, SAND AND MORE SAND North Wildwood introduced a $2 million bond ordinance, which primarily funded the annual backpassing project.

“A federal project is in the works, but it will be 2023 at the earliest before federal money adds a grain of sand to the beach. Meanwhile, the city has attempted to stem the tide itself.

For the past six years, the city maintains responsibility for trucking sand into the area during the offseason to establish some beach there for the summer while guarding against damage caused by winter storms.

Federal beach replenishment projects have become typical in New Jersey.

Federal projects have added to the beaches of most barrier-island communities in the state, except the Wildwoods.

Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, communities that share Five Mile Island with North Wildwood, have the opposite problem. Visitors often complain about the long beach walk due to accruing sand, which clogs outfall pipes and leads to standing water on the beach.

PARKING PROBLEMS Many residents and visitors have noticed that the amount of on-street parking is simply not sufficient to handle the number of vehicles looking for parking.

“WHILE YOU WERE AWAY. . “ consistently required that every residential unit have two off-street parking spaces. Unfortunately, it has become obvious that many of these spaces are not being used and on street parking is being used instead. If we are going to address our severe parking issues, it is imperative that more off-street parking be utilized.

The city has also taken great strides to make paid, on street parking easy and convenient. Every paid parking space in the city can now be paid for electronically either through our Parking App or a Parking Kiosk. With this, the original intent of parking permits, which was a convenience factor so that people did not have to carry coins around, is no longer relevant.

For these reasons, Council has undertaken a comprehensive review of parking regulations in Chapter 418 of the City Code. As a result of this review, the City has proceeded with several amendments to the City’s parking regulations regarding the expansion of paid parking zones and the regulations of parking permits for vehicles and low speed vehicles.

Consequently, beginning this summer, paid parking expands to the entire length of both Ocean and Surf Avenues.

The following changes have also been made: Weekly and Non-Transferrable Permits have been discontinued.

Low Speed Vehicle Permits: $200 for 2022 - $300 in 2023 - $400 in 2024 Transferrable Parking : $300 for 2022 $400 in 2023 - $500 in 2024 Parking with a permit on the east side of JFK Beach Drive is now permitted.

Parking with a permit in any of the City’s parking lots is now permitted.

Additionally, an owner of a property with a driveway is now permitted to park in front of their own driveway.

Mayor and Council wish to thank all residents, property owners, and visitors for their understanding in making these difficult decisions.

CITY OF WILDWOOD NEWS Mayor Pete Byron announced that the US Economic Development Administration (USEDA) has awarded the City $3.2 million for the reconstruction of nearly 3 blocks of the Boardwalk. “With approximately 6 million visitors every year, the Boardwalk is the single greatest driver of tourism in the Wildwoods,” noted Commissioner Krista Fitzsimons, Fitzsimons who oversees the City’s Dept. of Revenue and Finance. The USEDA-funded work, which is anticipated to create over 100 new jobs

and generate $6million in private investment, will include, among other things, the removal and replacement of the existing timber decking and stringers, concrete trolley beams and slabs, repairs to the current concrete substructure, and the installation of new timber stairs from the Boardwalk to the beachfront. The City anticipates this work to be completed by June 2023.

City Commissioner Steve Mikulski also noted the City’s efforts to secure additional resources to carry out other needed Boardwalk improvements. “We recently submitted Congressionally- directed Spending (CDS) applications to US Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker, requesting funding to design and install five new ramps at street-ends so that the Boardwalk is more accessible.

We’re certainly hoping for a favorable review of those applications.”

WILDWOOD CREST NEWS Wildwood Crest, designated “Healthy Town”, the highest status given by the Town” statewide Mayors Wellness Campaign, hosts a plethora of wellness programs, with the newest introduced this winter.

In February, the Wildwood Crest Recreation Department began its “Walking Wednesdays” program at the Crest Pier, a free choreographed 30-minute walking aerobics program for adults set to the beat of contemporary music. The program is designed for participants to build endurance, burn calories, make friends and have fun while walking.

Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera intorduced the first Wellness Campaign 100-Mile Virtual Challenge took place during the month of March, with nearly 40 participants joining in the fitness program. Participants were instructed to walk, run, swim, cycle or pedal an elliptical machine 100 miles during the 31 days in March and submit weekly totals to the Wildwood Crest Mayor’s Wellness Campaign Facebook page.

This virtual wellness challenge was established to further promote fitness and wellness in Wildwood Crest.

Wildwood Crest will host the inaugural Create in the Crest Arts Festival Saturday, June 18, 2022. (rain date June 19) The event will be held outdoors at Centennial Read on!

“ W ILDWOOD - A NEW SEASON“ Park, and will include artists, entrepreneurs, musicians, photographers and other creators of all kinds. Vendors will not only sell their art, but some will also teach free classes related to their crafts.

The Create in the Crest Arts Festival is hosted by the new Wildwood Crest Creative Arts Council, a volunteer committee whose role is to develop, stimulate, promote and encourage the arts, artists and art organizations through community collaborations, art-based initiatives and educational events in the Borough of Wildwood Crest.

SPECIAL CREST PROJECTS The borough was awarded a $400,000 DCA Small Cities Grant, which has helped fund the construction on 5 new street-end beach access areas at Jefferson, Washington, Pittsburgh, Preston and Denver Avenues which began on April 11. The borough and its contractor are committed to completing the job as quickly as possible and will make every effort to minimize disruption to beachgoers and neighbors. Improvements and added amenities include wider and longer timber platforms with ADA access, cable railings, bike racks, additional benches and foot-washing stations/showers. The Borough of Wildwood Crest plans similar improvements to all other street-end public beach access areas south of Rambler Road by the spring of 2023.

WEST WILDWOOD NEWS Matthew Ksiazek, Ksiazek locally known as Mayor Matt, Matt is currently in his second year of office in the Borough of West Wildwood. Once fraught with crisis and scandal, Matt is happy with the direction it is going and has new hope for the town’s future.

Matt also works with his father as an electrician. His passion for proper infrastructure and efficiency is contagious as he recounted a recent adventure. During the chill of December 2021, Matt climbed up each pole and installed electricity for the borough’s Holiday decorations himself. It was 100% donation from his family’s electric business.

The West Wildwood Dept. of Public Works with much appreciated help from the City of Wildwood hung the decorations.

“I feel that West Wildwood is beginning a new age. We are 102 years

old this summer, and in a better place than we have been in a very long time,” Matt said. “We have new rateables and businesses, many new infrastructure projects, and new equipment and park improvements coming. Also, West Wildwood does all of this with less; we work harder, use creativity, and work together as a community; to get it done. I will always remain positive about the future of West Wildwood and will continue to work hard to make it one of the best towns in all of Cape May County.”

Health conscious bunch we are, we plan to devote several chapters on how beneficial time by the sea really is. We’ve got Yoga on the Beach, the Downtown Wildwood Farmer’s Market, Downtown Wildwood Fitness in the Plaza and all that fresh, sea air (a proven elixir).

Naturally, we intend to fill many pages with our one-of-a-kind Wildwood events (clearly, we would need a sequel to include them all). To name a few, there’s the Sidewalk Chalk Competition and the Wildwood Crest Sand Sculpting Festival (a balm for our creative souls in its 10th season now) and the NJ State BBQ Championship & Anglesea Blues Festival. We’ve also got Friday Night Fireworks and Concerts Under the Stars. Not only will we be in great shape (for all of those boogie board races we’re sure to win), but we’ll also be well-fed and happily entertained.

It’s sure to be a Beach Bestseller! Now, we invite you, our dear friends and fellow Wildwood lovers, to share your seaside tales (and, of course, photos) with us, because no Wildwood story would be complete without all of you!

by Al Alven, the ‘Director of fun’ from WW365 As upside down as the world seemed to be at times over the past two years, the pandemic did not slow the pace of major development or the continued influx of commercial investors in the Wildwoods.

The reasons for this are myriad some would argue that economic and social factors accelerated these movements - but that’s an analysis for another time. This space, as is our tradition, is best served to deliver a breezy round-up of business-related changes since the end of last summer.

And there is MUCH to get to!

Highlighted by the first phase of the long-awaited Boardwalk renovation project and the beginning stages of what is shaping up to be a dramatic transformation of Pacific Avenue’s commercial corridor, the “offseason” of 2021-22 was one of the busiest in recent memory.

Once again this spring, a diverse roster of new attractions, eateries and specialty shops has emerged, several taking over locations that had been long shuttered…

BOARDWALK BUSTLE After years of planning and discussion, the first phase of a project aimed to renovate the majority of the Wildwoods Boardwalk has been completed. Work began on the three-block stretch between Cedar and Maple Avenues in November. The existing, aging wooden planks and concrete pathways for the Sightseer Tram Cars were completely removed in favor of a sured-up superstructure, new base and pine decking.

Supply chain issues held up the final stages of work, which wrapped up in May. A switch to pine was necessitated due to the unavailability of Brazilian Cumaru, a durable wood that Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron said will be used for future phases of the project. Work on the next phase is expected to begin in the fall, starting at Maple Avenue and moving north, with priority given to areas deemed to be “most in need.”

Just yards away, the Wildwood Dog Park & Beach also underwent a major renovation this past winter. The popular, year round attraction has a fresh look for 2022 with the addition of more high-quality commercial obstacle equipment, a larger “small breed” section, more shaded areas and other upgrades. The majority of fencing around the park’s perimeter was also replaced.

Back down to the renovated area of the Boardwalk, three units in from Cedar Avenue, next to Eleanor’s Gifts, a Peddler’s Village favorite has Gifts arrived brought to us by Daniel & Sabrina Legiec.

Legiec Their Cluster’s Handcrafted Popcorn boasts several locations in PA and NJ, now including the Wildwoods. The gourmet popcorn shop offers a wide variety of sweet and savory treats, including flavors like Cookie Explosion, Pumpkin Crisp and Toasted Coconut, as well as traditional flavors like Caramel Corn and White Cheddar.

Last summer, following the sale of the entire 2000 block of the Boardwalk in North Wildwood, 3 Brother’s Pizza sat alone as the only tenant on the block. It looks like they will be joined by some new neighbors this season, with Villa Gourmet being the first to open. Operated by Anthony & Tara Sindoni, previous owners of a store by Sindoni the same name in Ocean City, the culinary-themed gift shop specializes in unique gourmet items and accessories.

Depot Just around the bend on New Jersey Ave., a longtime boardwalk favorite has opened a second location at a spot most recently occupied by SLICE Brick Oven Pizza. Owners Elaina GaldoPagan & Hawk Pagan who reopened Little Nicky’s at 17th & Boardwalk in 2020, after the pizzeria had sat vacant for two summers, have renovated the empty building.

A few blocks south, Beach Bowls, Bowls now open at 100 E. 5th Avenue (the former home of Fresh! on Fifth and Marinucci’s Too), Too aims to bring healthy options and convenience to North Wildwood.

As we continue south, we reach the North Wildwood/Wildwood border at 26th Street, where Surf Avenue ends and Ocean Avenue begins. There, on the Wildwood side, a legendary Philadelphia institution has arrived in the form of Santucci’s Original Square Pizza.

Santucci’s, which originated in 1959 in Northeast Philly, brings its famous square pies to the island. The pizzeria is a BYOB and also offers delivery and catering services.

Franchise owners Jim & Erica Burke have confirmed that Santucci’s will be open year round, and plan to be heavily involved in the community.

A brief stroll - or even a glance - down Pacific Avenue to the west would clue even a first-time visitor that major changes are in the works in Downtown Wildwood. Two massive projects by Philadelphia-based firm BG G Capital bookend a dramatic transformation unfolding before our eyes.

The 100 E. Magnolia development, on the former site of St. Anne’s/Trinity Cape Trinity School, School will soon add 38 residential units and recreation space to a 1.75-acre tract that stretches east

to west from Pacific to New Jersey Avenue, and north to south from Magnolia (hence the name) to Glenwood.

Several blocks south, the multi-level Residences at Pacific, Pacific a 28,000-sq.foot residential complex, is rapidly taking shape. The project, expected to be completed by next spring, spans northsouth from Schellenger to Lincoln Avenues. A series of structures that formerly housed famed nightspots M.T. Bottle, 2nd Street Annie’s and the Fairview Cafe, were demolished late last year Cafe to make way for the new construction.

Further altering the landscape of the Pacific Avenue corridor is the disappearance of the Shamrock Cafe - well, sort of. After the Shamrock, one of the oldest continuously-operated businesses on the island, closed last year, owner Tom Gerace decided on a big move. Literally.

Gerace had the ground level bar completely removed and arranged for the Victorian structure that sat above it for over 100 years to be moved roughly 200 feet to the east on Lincoln Avenue, with the purpose of using it as a future residence. The building, originally the Berwind Hotel (circa 1900) was transported amidst much fanfare and media attention over two days in late January.

The future of the Shamrock’s now-former home at the southwestern corner of Pacific & Lincoln remains unknown, but it sure looks strange for now!

Nearby, two new night spots look to help Pacific Avenue continue its resurgence. Exit 4, 4 from the people behind Exit 6 in Anglesea, has taken over the space where The Wood operated on the 3800 block last year. The plan is for Exit 4 to move into the Residences at Pacific when it is ready in 2023.

Meanwhile, The Cove in Wildwood has moved into the former home of The Deck at Holly Beach at 3401 Pacific, next door to Hooked on Books and directly across from Byrne Plaza, Downtown Wildwood’s events epicenter and gathering place.

by Al Alven, the ‘Director of fun’ from WW365 Local entrepreneur Abby MacQueen is swimming into new territory. A familiar face at the Downtown Wildwood Farmers Market, McQueen has steadily grown and expanded her Guppi Sustainable Surf Co. brand since its launch in 2018.This Spring, she opened the Guppi flagship store at 3113 Pacific Avenue, featuring a full line of ecofriendly apparel with clothing made from recycled water bottles and other sustainable materials. All Guppi products are created in-house, screen printed by hand with eco-friendly inks.

Swinging back east a few blocks, we find fellow entrepreneur Angelo Bilios, Bilios who is never content to rest on his laurels. One year after completing major interior upgrades and a completely new ordering system at Bagel Time Cafe (4600 Atlantic Avenue), Bilios purchased the Pink Cadillac Diner (3801 Atlantic) and completed the first phase of another big remodel. The diner has retained its “Doo Wop” theme, while receiving a full interior overhaul, complete with new flooring, booths, neon lighting by Fred Musso of Ultra Neon, and the addition of some wildlycreative menu selections.

After the season, Bilios plans to restore the diner’s full stainless steel exterior!

A few blocks north, at Atlantic & Cedar, the Boardwalk Bar & Grill has given way to Island Bagels.

Bagels The new entry offers up a solid menu of breakfast fare with a twist - it has retained the liquor license and is thus able to serve its “premium cocktails” with omelettes, pancakes, french toast and other morning favorites. The site of Island Bagels was at one time the home of Phil & Eddie’s Surf Club, Club one of the island’s most revered and historic clubs, and one of the late, great Bobby Rydell’s favorite places to perform.

THE WILD WESTSIDE Capt. Tim Merighi grew up fishing and boating on the back bays of the Wildwoods, his father imparting on him a love of the area and life on the water.

This Spring, Tim realized a lifelong dream when he launched Kick Back Tiki Cruises, Cruises a floating tiki bar boat

based out of West Wildwood (the former B & E. Marine at 26th Avenue).

Another new service, Pon-Tiki Charters, will be based out of Wildwood Crest this summer.

By the way, both of the aforementioned tiki boats have a very important feature - a restroom on board!

AND THE CREST Back in 2020, Jason Kramer left his longtime Doo Wop Cafe at the Tangiers Motel, Motel to open the Doo Wop DriveIn at Sweet Brian & New Jersey.

This spring, he’s returned to his previous home, which has been remodeled and dubbed the Tangiers Cafe. The Doo Wop Drive-In isn’t going anywhere, as the endlessly-energeric Kramer will operate both locations, slinging some of the tastiest (and most photogenic!) culinary creations on the island.

As previously noted, BG Capital has been making big waves with numerous developments and projects underway in Wildwood. Back in November, the Philly-based real estate investment firm purchased the Hardware Store at 105 W. Aster Road with plans to rebranded as Crest Supply, Supply “a full-scale building supply company.”

After years on the drawing board and numerous conceptual changes, the Crest Arts Pavilion at 6301 Ocean Avenue is nearing completion. The former Wildwood Crest Library (closed in 2015) is being reimagined as a mixeduse venue and communal gathering.

“It will feature a little bit of everything the Crest has to offer and a lot of our personality,” said Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera of the building, which will feature functional space for meetings and local organizations, hosting options for weddings and other special events, two detailed retail areas, local historical artifacts and works of art, botanical gardens and more.

While supply chain issues and material delays have pushed back its completion, Cabrera remains hopeful that the Pavilion will be ready for a grand opening ceremony in July.

passed away on December 24, 2021, joining her loving husband Joseph in eternity. Mary was born on December 20, 1933, in Philadelphia. She also resided in Bucks and Montgomery Counties before finding her home by the sea in 1977 when Mary, Joe and seven of their eight children relocated from Levittown, Pa to North Wildwood, NJ. They happily lived in a charming seaside house they determined was built between 1890 & 1905. A true Wildwood lover, Mary was a big fan of the Sun and always willing to contribute her family’s own seaside tales.

Mary graduated from St. Stephen’s Elementary School and Little Flower High School in 1947 and 1951, respectively. She worked at Bell Telephone and Atlantic Refinery in Philadelphia and was a proud volunteer lunch mom at St. Michaels the Archangel Elementary School in Levittown and St. Ann’s Elementary School in Wildwood during her kids’ school years.

She spent 15 of what she considered her “retirement years” as the Guidance

Ever the caring “mom,” she helped countless students with their college admissions process, making sure they had their scholarship applications completed.

Mary proudly served as a member of the Little Flower Alumni Association of Cape May County and the Cape May County Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.

No doubt her biggest accomplishment was the loving family she raised. She is survived by her nine children (including North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello), 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

We here at The Sun send our deepest condolences to the Rosenello family.

We fondly remember Mary and her beautiful legacy that happily lives on by the sea…

“Music was part of my life since I was 5 years old,” Christopher Rodriguez said from his home, in Philadelphia, Oct. 22.

Otherwise known as “DJ Slice,” this musician continues to defy stereotypes and the repercussions of a turbulent childhood. DJ loves his family, music, and helping others to find their way, regardless of their past or circumstances.

DJ loves Wildwood, having called the seaside city home since he was age 11.

Now, at 36, he divides his time between the Shore and Philadelphia when he’s not on tour.

DJ attributes his start to the people of Wildwood, namely the Troiano family, who practiced “tough love” when he was in high school. He remains especially grateful to Ernie III, his former high school football coach.

“Wildwood is my home,” DJ said in previous interviews. His mother was 14 years old when DJ was born, estranged from family and finding herself in Camden. DJ’s childhood is riddled with the memories of violence, drug abuse, and domestic violence playing out in the streets. Raised by his maternal Italian grandmother, DJ learned life’s harsher realities early on.

Then, after his grandfather was incarcerated, DJ found himself moving to North Wildwood, attending Margret Mace Elementary School and then Wildwood High School.

Music offered not only solace but stability, opening DJ’s mind and heart to a wide variety of sounds, color, and textures beyond the here-and-now. DJ de-

Chris & Ashley Rodriguez scribes music as “spiritual” and “soothing to my soul.” Headphones provided an escape into a different world, away from the turmoil.

“Music is more than words,” DJ said.

From classic rock, country, Motown, to 90s hip-hop/R&B, DJ both plays and enjoys many genres.

DJ’s career began in 2003 while he was “messing around with the music.” He would play local gigs, trying to find his own beat and style. He became an “inner city celebrity,” in Wildwood, but life was far from simple. After being laidoff from his day job, DJ suffered homelessness and lived with his mother for a time. Yet, DJ had his wife and children to consider. He focused on his music and, slowly, things began to change. DJ won several competitions and increased his social media presence.

Eventually, his musical “idol,” Stevie B, contacted DJ and asked him to perform.

A childhood dream became reality.

No matter how far DJ continues to professionally expand, he always goes back to his roots in Wildwood.

“Make friends who become like family, who show you love and caring,” DJ said, encouraging others who may feel lost in life. “Good vibes” are more than just an inward feeling, according to DJ: they should reach out and touch others.

The music scene is slowly coming back to “normal” in the wake of Covid-19, and DJ is ready for whatever the future brings.

“You don’t have to be a product of your environment,” DJ concluded.

Michelle Rutkowski Oct 15, 2021 Growing up in Wildwood, Boardwalk’s Best founder Michelle Rutkowski’s life was shaped by the diversity of immigrant business owners and employees who make summer magic happen every year at the Jersey Shore. “Our community has celebrated the contribution of immigrants and enjoyed the fruits of their labor for as long as I have been here. We should be the first to step up,” says Rutkowski.

Just 2 years ago, Rutkowski feared she would lose everything to the Pandemic. Surprisingly, business has gotten a boost as families reclaimed simpler shore traditions. “People want quality time with their families, whether it’s a week-long vacation or a day trip.”

Rutkowski is mom to three children and has built Boardwalk’s Best, Inc over the last 20 years in what was first a matter of survival but has grown into what may be one of the most socially conscious businesses the Jersey Shore has ever seen. She has and currently employs at-risk youth, formerly incarcerated adults, single-parents, adults with developmental disabilities, immigrants, refugees, J1 Visa Students and people of all races, religions, and scores of nationalities.

Twenty years ago, Michelle toured hurricane refugee camps in Central America and lived in Haiti working on community development. “My great-grandfather’s name is at Ellis Island. Living here with the freedom to choose our lives, if we are willing to work for it, has taken us from a plot of land in Western Pennsylvania to the Jersey Shore to being part of the rescue of thousands of families fleeing Afghanistan.”

“Our Boardwalk’s Best Team was exhausted from a summer experiencing Labor Shortage… This shipment was tens of thousands of pounds of clothing. We had an opportunity to help thousands of people in four days. Our team members put in extra hours to pitch in. We all believe in serving the greater good.”

Michelle is eternally grateful to Hopeloft, Melissa Helmbrecht, Jason Redd, the Governor’s Office, Team Rubicon, the base, and the NJ State Police.

She would also like to thank her family for their support, especially her grandparents. Elizabeth MillerRutkowski taught generations of Americans to love and take care of each other as a Head Start Teacher, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. Eugene Rutkowski was a WWII Combat Veteran, high-school physical education teacher, coach, referee, and community leader. Phyllis Bonnet-Greenawalt and her husband, Myron, worked shifts at a glass bottle factory and the railroad to support their 5 daughters. They were accomplished gardeners, as they both grew up on farms. Her parents raised her and her brothers to be hard-working, independent thinkers, good citizens, and radical parents. ​Finally, Michelle would like to acknowledge her kids and husband Hank for usually understanding when she got involved in crazy projects, taking time away from their family to help strangers. “May my daughters learn to responsibly exercise and never take their American Privilege for granted. May they always do what they can to improve it as well as help those less fortunate.”

Following the bittersweet success in July 2008 of “The (traveling) Wall that Heals,” a half-scale replica of the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. that traveled to Wildwood, Greg Mazzotta, who passed away in September 2012, was inspired by the possibility of having an enduring Vietnam Veterans Memorial right here by the sea. Greg’s cousin, Vince DePrinzio, a proud Marine who served during the Vietnam War and was instrumental in acquiring the land as well as the construction of the Wildwood Vietnam Veteran Wall, sadly passed away in February 2022.

Vince was treasurer of the Vietnam Veterans of America Wildwood Chapter 955, working alongside his chapter and American Legion and VFW posts to make Greg’s dream a reality while paying tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives or who were reported missing during the Vietnam War. As a result of major fundraising efforts, 58,913 names of our country’s fallen Vietnam heroes are now etched on the panels of the Wall that stretches 240 feet. Thanks in part to Vince’s efforts,

this half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. permanently (and proudly) lines the sidewalk of Columbus Park in Wildwood.

None of it would have been possible without hard work and hometown support. Vince acknowledged former Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. and Commissioner Bill Davenport as working toward finding a permanent home for the wall.

The planning and approval process was a two-year event, with the monuments dedication taking place on May 29, 2010.

The century-old local masonry firm, Ernie Troiano & Sons, generously offered their services, supplies and labor during the construction while encouraging community support in the endeavor. The Troiano’s remain dedicated to the cause, overseeing projects and giving their time as well as themselves in memory of all who served.

made up for ‘lost time’. She and her husband Bill, and their two sons live in Toms River. Geri and I met in the fall of 1975 when we attended college together. (We call it our ‘wild days’.) We got our first apartment together in Margate, to be closer to school. She also lives in North Carolina, with her daughter, Kristen.

Deb and Tom Quinn and I have been close friends since high school. They live in Virginia with their family close by.

Last summer we got to spend a couple of beautiful days together on Columbine Ave beach in the Crest, along with sisters Barbara and Carol.

A couple of years ago I got the idea to start mailing my friends a copy of “The Sun”. After all, they put up with me during my ‘radical teenage years’; and they supported me when I spoke of my dreams to become a ‘Peace Corps’ worker, a ‘Phys Ed’ teacher, and a ‘Police Officer’.

And, later on they hung in there with me through illness, and some other personal trials. So, this was the one thing that I could do for them. “The Sun” is like their link to the Wildwoods; their ‘home town, their memories, and their past’.

They all look forward to receiving “The Sun”, and reading it from cover to cover.

And of course, they are thrilled when a photo of them or their family appears in

it. They anxiously await its arrival, and love catching up on all the ‘lighthearted’ news, and seeing all the nostalgic photos.

Growing up during the 70’s with these guys was the best. There was such diversity going on in everything during this time; especially with music. The ‘Carpenters’, ‘The Allman Brothers’, ‘Ambrosia’, and ‘Tower of Power’, were just a few of the groups at the top of my list of favorites back then. ‘Harry Chapin’ (Taxi) also holds a special place in my heart.

I am grateful for “The Sun” newspaper, as it has continued to be a meaningful connection for my friends and I these past few years in between our visits.

heartwarming paper every few months to our Cape May County residents. When they see me coming in the door the smile is already on their faces, and their hands are already out. “Is that the new Sun?!”.

And my ‘paper boy’ route stretches much further then Cape May County. I have a whole list of friends that I mail copies to when it comes out. I have been blessed in my life to have many close friends that have ‘withstood the test of time’. But, unfortunately quite a few of them have moved out of the area.

Sue and I met in the sixth grade when I transferred from St. Ann’s grade school to Margaret Mace in North Wildwood. We became best friends immediately. Sue and her husband (childhood sweetheart, Bob Beasley) live in North Carolina with their family. Jackie came into my life next. She moved here from Philadelphia during the sixth grade also, and from our first hello it was as though we were ‘long lost sisters’. She now lives in Florida with her husband and their two sons. Sil and Paul and I met in our freshman year at Wildwood Catholic High School. Sil lives in North Carolina with his family, and Paul and his family live in California.

SUBMITTED BY DIANE LOUGHREY My husband Joe and I have vacationed in Wildwood since we were kids. We recently stayed with friends, who made our senior dog Lucy’s dream come true by letting her and her brother Jethro also visit.

Lucy, who we rescued six years ago, is approximately 10 to 13 years old and has mobility issues. That, however, did not stop her from enjoying the beach and swimming in the ocean! She got a lot of much-needed exercise on her summer vacation but was carried by her daddy when

she got tired. According to Lucy, “things aren’t quite as scary when you have a best friend.” Like Lucy, six-year-old Jethro is also a rescue and a Wildwood lover.

Joe and I were also celebrating our 16th anniversary. Lucy was so excited about our trip that she stayed awake during the entire car ride home to Massachusetts with a smile on her face, proving what all seaside lovers know; saltwater heals everything!

They Found Their

True Love inWildwood by-the-Sea “Whenever Meg and I left Moore’s for the night, we would always sit on the rocks on Spruce Ave, where the Seawall is now...”

WRITTEN BY BRIAN DEAL FOR MEG I first heard stories of North Wildwood from my dad, who spent his summers there with his family in Grassy Sounds.

His Mom was a waitress at Bishops, which is now the Anglesea Pub. Then our family would spend our vacations there at the Sea Rose at 11th and Surf.

Having all of those great memories there I never knew that one day I would meet my wife there.

Meg and I officially met in April of 1988, but we didn’t know we had a connection before then. We both had family that lived on the same block in Philly, and over the years there were many block parties on that street. Meg’s Aunt on that block even came to my parent’s house to swim one summer.

A friend of Meg’s asked her and a few other girls to go in on a shore house together with her and a guy she worked with, who then asked me and a few other guys. Our house that summer was at 24th & New York, a big old three-story house that was knocked down a few summers ago. When they were tearing it down, I got one of the old bricks for us to have.

Since we didn’t all know each other, we decided to get together at Larry’s Happy Tap in the Northeast one Saturday night in April so we could all meet. We had a great time and couldn’t wait until Memorial Day weekend.

This was Meg’s first shore house. Most of the guys, including me, went to Archbishop Ryan high school, which Meg’s Mom wasn’t too sure about. (Meg and her family all went to Saint Hubert’s and Father Judge). She told her mom that one of the guys went to Mass every Sunday, so she’d have someone to go with.

That was me. Meg didn’t drive then so sometimes I would give her a ride down or back home and we always had so much fun and laughed the whole time.

We really liked each other, but I was seeing someone at the time. We all had a great time that summer seeing Johnny O and the Classic Dogs of Love at the Lighthouse Point, going to the Fairview or Miss Kitty’s. And of course, no night was complete without ending our night at Moore’s Inlet. We decided we would get a house together again the following summer.

Brian & Meg like to visit their special spot In the summer of 1989, our house was at 8th & Surf in North Wildwood. It was another great summer and by the end of it, Meg and I knew that we wanted to be together. We had our first date on September 6th, 1989 and saw Uncle Buck at the Orleans movie theater.

The following summer we rented the 8th & Surf house again and it was a great summer. Whenever Meg and I left Moore’s for the night, we would always sit on the rocks on Spruce Ave, where the sea wall is now. On Sunday, September 2nd of Labor Day weekend, we all went to the Lighthouse Point in the afternoon to see Slippery and the Skirt Chasers one last time that summer. After that we went to Tony’s at 26th & New York to get something to eat. We ended the night, as always, at Moore’s. Our whole house was there having a great time dancing to the great music that Joe Bilbee played.

I told Meg I wanted to go outside for a little while to get some air. So, of course we went to our spot on the rocks. I had been going around the whole day with the ring in my pocket without the box.

We talked about getting married, but she had no idea that I was going to propose that night. I was nervous, so as we were looking out at the water, I said to her “these rocks look shiny tonight, don’t they?” She said, “what?”, and as she turned, I pulled out the ring and said, “kind of like this one!” She was totally surprised and smiled and gave me a big “yes!” Then I put the ring on her finger right away. There was no seawall then so when you sat on the rocks the water

Many people walked by this spot along the seawall not knowing it was made by Brian for his true love Meg. (Walkers continued to add to the message) was right there. I was afraid we were going to drop it.

I hadn’t told anyone, except her friend Amy, that I was going to propose. When we were talking about where to do it, she said it has to be in North Wildwood, and somewhere that means something to both of us. We spent a lot of summer nights sitting by those rocks. It was the perfect, and only, spot to propose. When we came back into Moore’s our friends were all so excited and happy for us. Joe Bilbee pulled us up on stage and played “Going to the Chapel”. We called our family from the payphone that was out by the back bar.

We were married on March 28, 1992, at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Mayfair (where Meg grew up and we bought our first home). Our reception was at the Quartet Club in Somerton. It was a per-

North Wildwood is a place that holds such happy memories for us. We have our own place there now and get to relive all of those great times while making even more new ones.

So, since Meg is reading this now for the first time, I want to say Happy 30th Anniversary to my wife and best friend!

Angels on Earth Touching Angel Visit Baptist Church Community Food Bank One Life at a Time

BY RACHEL ROGISH “We’re here to serve the people,” Pamela Hills said as a cold wind blew up Garfield Avenue. It was a blustery January day outside but inside the food pantry of Angel Baptist Church, it was warm and bright.

The warmth glowed on the faces of those who gave much-needed items, and the light found reflection in the faces of those who gratefully received them.

Standing since 1916, Angel Visit Baptist Church continues to serve the community and the residents of Cape May County. According to Deacon Charles Statesman, three African American churches have existed in Wildwood since the town’s formation: Methodist, Holiness, and Baptist. Each congregation settled in various neighborhoods, seeking to meet the needs found there. Primarily, the spiritual needs of the community and church family are paramount.

For members Pamela Hills and Juanita Jones, their roots run deep in the church.

“I grew up in this church,” Pamela said.

In the sanctuary, stained glass windows line the walls. One of the windows bears the name “Robinson,” which belongs to Pamela’s family. The names etched into the glass panes keep precious memories and history alive.

Juanita also grew up attending Angel Visit. She taught at Wildwood High School for many years and recently began to substitute teaching again. Juanita still pours herself into the young people of Wildwood, advocating for better housing, family structure, and after-school programs.

Both Juanita and her sister, Jennifer, graduated from Wildwood High School (respectively the classes of 1965 and 1970, see photos in this issue)

Loretta Jones came to Wildwood as a small child from Atlantic City; she worked at the well-loved Rosella clothing store, located on Pacific Avenue.

“It’s home,” Juanita said.

Yet, for Juanita, Pamela, and Charles, their church home is not only a connection to the past but the path forward.

The church’s food pantry serves several local families both on and off the island. During the lockdown of 2020, volunteers kept the doors open every day.

“It’s still a tough time for a lot of people,” Charles said.

The food items are provided by the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.

Fresh meats, canned goods, and shelfstable foods lined the neatly organized shelves and freezers.

Charles, who serves as both a deacon and interim pastor, anticipates future church growth. Although small in number, Charles says the church family is great in their collective love for God and one another.

“The Lord’s been good,” Charles said, smiling. He celebrated 21 years at Angel Visit and has served as a deacon since 2009. Charles came to Wildwood after leaving the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. He walked into a service at Angel Visit and hasn’t looked back since.

“It felt like home,” Charles said. “I just walked in.”

Congregations across the globe still deal with the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Yet, for the family at Angel Visit, they rest upon a steady foundation while looking to the future.

Charles seeks to draw younger people into the fold and see the “seed planted with them.”

Please allow me to boast. I have survived 100 years and I am still standing strong. I was here before you were born and I’ll be here long after you go. When I first appeared, people rode horses and traveled by train. I sat level to the beach and was vulnerable to every storm. Later I was raised and even moved a few times. I remember the ocean’s cool water used to flow under me at high tide and fisherman even cast from my deck.

I have never been off the island yet I’ve seen every fashion the world has offered, heard every language there is to hear and I’ve been walked on by more humans than any other wooden structure on earth. I am famous, yes! Songs are sung about me, stories are written and I am photographed all the time. But I see my success by the children’s excitement, laughter and sheer joy of being on me. I am their wooden playground full of sounds, lights, rides, food and toys. Admit it adults… even most of you have succumbed to my allure. It is ironic though, because of you I am here and because of me you are here. It is a friendship built on fun, romance and money. By the way, do you realize how many coins have dropped through my cracks all these years? The kids knew. I’ve watched generation after generation of them scooping up the treasures underneath me.

My enemy is less active these days, but fire has tried and tried to destroy me. Do you remember the storm of ‘62? Waves rolled over me and pounded my deck. My neighbor, the sea, tried hard to drag me away. Despite the fires, storms and even decay, I still stand strong and invite the world. Will I still stand 100 years from now? Will I be moved or will I look the same?

I am more than a structure… I am a landmark unique in this world. China has its wall, France has its tower and the Wildwoods have me, the Boardwalk.

There’s always something to DOO in the Downtown Byrne Plaza in Wildwood! Following the sentiment that the best things in life are free, you are cordially invited to spend your Tuesday summer nights with the stars. Free Downtown Wildwood Family Movie Nights begin June 28th.

When the sun sets, the (Hollywood stars comes out in Wildwood) stars come out (8:25ish)!

Don’t’ forget your beach chairs and blankets…

On June 28th, the animals of the forest welcome buck fawn Bambi (release date August 21, 1942, voiced by Hardie Albright and Donnie Dunagan), watching him rise to his title of prince of the forest, marching alongside his friends, rabbit Thumper and skunk Flower (while forming their own unique version of Wildwood Boardwalk Parades).

On July 5th, we find Scooby Doo (voice of Frank Welker, who traveled) Straight Outta Nowhere (before landing Straight to Video on September 14, 2021), in Nowhere, Kansas, solving a mystery with Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Courage the Cowardly Dog (all while entering the Ultimate Beach Frisbee Competition).

On July 12th, Tinker Bell ( release date September 11, 2008, voice of Mae Whitman), along with her fairy friends (who would all love Beach Yoga), creates magic in Pixie Hollow, each possessing their own special talent.

Follow the voices on July 19th, when Horton Hears a Who (release date March 14, 2008).

Welcome to the Jungle of Nool, where friendly elephant Horton (voiced by Jim Carrey) discovers the tiny town of Whoville and learns to treasure life’s littlest things (wishing they had a tiny Merry Go Round and tea cups to make their wee world whole).

On July 26th, we travel to a seaside town on the Italian Riviera to meet Luca (release date June 18, 2021), a young boy (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) enjoying a life-altering summer adventure, discovering his very own Adventure Pier.

On August 9th, Rio 2 (release date April 11, 2014) finds Blu and Jewel (voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway) married with three children, taking an action-packed voyage through the enchanted city of Rio to the Amazon wilds (sadly, no action-packed arcade in sight).

On August 16th, Ron’s Gone Wrong (release date October 22, 2021) for awkward middle schooler Barney (voice of Jack Dylan Grazer) and his malfunctioning robot best friend, Ron (voice of Zach Galifianakis), who, despite his brokenness, would likely be the big winner at Skee-ball Tournaments.

On August 23rd, we visit with the Madrigal family (voices include Stephanie Beatriz, John Leguizamo), who live in the magical town of Encanto (release date November 24, 2021), hidden in the mountains of Colombia, where each child possesses their own magical gift but secretly wishes for nothing more than to be participants at Beach Blast Soccer.

The animated adventures we’re sure to have these soon-to-be summer nights! Get ready for magic, mystery and mayhem! Oh, the places we’ll go…We here at The Sun can’t wait for our trip to the Italian Riviera, where the cuisine (we’ve heard) rivals our Boardwalk fare. Next up, we’re on the cinematic road to Rio, where we’ll take in the sights from the comfort of our beach chairs.

We can’t forget a stopover in Whoville (because in life it’s all about the little things). We’ll surely make special friends along the way (both reel and robotic). Our imaginative journey would not be the same without a few fantastic fairies (hello, Tinkerbell) and a classic cutie (we’re looking at you, Bambi).

Of course, before we take this storytelling trip, early birds we are, we’ll be visiting our unique Downtown Wildwood shops and restaurants, shopping and savoring each Wildwood moment.

Our summer by the sea is complete.

A

t the request of my lifelong friends, Bob and Ralph Johnson, I’d like to capture some of the magic from the Summer of 1960 as it pertains to hosting world–class entertainers at the Carousel Motel (which opened the summer of ‘57 on the NW corner of Lavender & Atlantic in the Crest).

My late brother Steve (WHS ‘66) and I worked as pool boys at the Carousel for three summers in the early 60s.

Our employers were the senior Johnson brothers, Earl and Ralph, whose construction business was headquartered on E. 23rd Ave. in North Wildwood, our hometown. All the 2nd generation Johnsons, as well as the MacDonalds, attended Wildwood High with Bob and Billy Johnson, graduating in the early 50s, along with my late brother Jim (WHS ‘52) The senior Johnsons managed the construction of the Carousel, but day to day operations were consigned to the next generation: Bob, Billy and Ralph Jr. My brother and I became lifelong friends with them and they became our mentors in every sense of the word. We later worked with them at Jr’s Restaurant below the Hotel Dayton at Wildwood and Atlantic Avenues.

Ultimately my brother and I, collectively known as Captn Mac, opened our seafood restaurant at 2nd and New York Aves in North Wildwood, at the site formerly known as Sunbergs and then Garrabrandt’s.

It was a dream come true and a fitting work site for two brothers with diplomas from the Culinary

Institute of America. We operated the restaurant from 1985 to 2000 and sold the property in 2002. The landmark statue of CAPTN MAC still stands by my home on New York Ave.

Many famous performers stayed at the Carousel, in Suite 1 on the third floor, one of the beautiful 65 units that made up the complex. The list of entertainers included Bobby Darin, Chubby Checker, Johnny Mathis, Connie Francis, Lionel Hampton, Buddy Hackett, Eartha Kitt and Buddy Rich. Last but not least, was the incomparable, multi-talented Sammy Davis, Jr. (1925-1990), who made a great impression on the two young pool boys during the summer of 1960. That summer, Sammy was performing at the Bolero nightclub owned by Ben Martin on the NW corner of Oak and Atlantic.

Philadelphia DJ Bob London had great relations with the Four Aces, who also stayed at the Carousel.

Bob played a role every Wednesday afternoon. All the performers loved to get together with one another.

Bob conducted poolside interviews at the Carousel for local radio. Everyone who witnessed those times couldn’t help but see the camaraderie of the entertainment profession.

In those days, entertainers could use plastic firearms as props for their acts. In our day of excessive gun violence, this is no longer appropriate, but in Wildwood’s golden era it was commonplace. As well as the pearl handled six shooters used to dis-

play his quick draw talents, Sammy used a black plastic machine gun in his act. One summer afternoon he appeared on the 3rd floor deck, holding his black toy machine gun, pretending to shoot Steve and me as we stood poolside. On hearing the classic Rat A Tat-Tat sound, both of us fell backwards into the pool, pretending to be shot. Mr. Davis laughed uncontrollably for almost a minute. We were happy to have bonded with him during his stay.

During the 2020 pandemic year, our nation has struggled with issues of racial equality. I find myself reflecting in a positive way on my experiences growing up in Wildwood by the Sea and interacting with people of various races, religions, nationalities and lifestyles. I was fortunate enough to interact with performers and entertainers of various races and nationalities as well.

Many of the same positive relations that characterize race relations and work in sports environments carried over into the hospitality industry, including all guests of the Carousel Motel. The poor boys never heard a lecture regarding equal treatment. It was just a given and didn’t have to be discussed.

Sammy Davis Jr was a nice man who loved life. Because he was born in Harlem, race was a tougher issue than it was for those of us growing up in the Wildwoods. Despite his early experiences, he was able to

CAPT’N MAC’S develop strong relationships with people of various backgrounds, including his Jewish wife, May Britt, who invited the Johnsons to their wedding in Las Vegas. Sammy and May soon had a family of five. In 1971, President Nixon invited Sammy to the White House and he became a goodwill ambassador for America.

He was a talented man who led a hard life. He liked people and showed it, as illustrated by his poolside theatrics. Although he had everything money could buy, plus countless devoted fans, there was a certain defiance in him. Even as a young boy, I could feel him saying, “Don’t tell me how to live.“ The MacDonald brothers are eternally grateful to two generations of Johnson brothers who introduced us to an exciting world of entertainers who treated people well and who enjoyed the hospitality of Greater Wildwood during that Golden Era. We learned later that Bolero club owner Ben Martin had called Ralph Johnston Sr. and asked if they would accept Sammy as a guest at the Carousel. The Carousel was proud to help pioneer an era of equal treatment for all in the greater Wildwood hotel/motel industry.

I think 2020 was one of the toughest years in the history of our nation, but we are still being called to forge a more perfect union, to fulfill our country’s true potential. Why not look to the examples of people like the Johnson brothers and performers like Sammy?

Memories of My Grandmother

Mrs. Hattie Long

BY CAROL M cCULLOCH I’m the oldest of four children of Hattie Long’s youngest child, James. Over the years, I’ve noticed the articles about her haven’t included all the details, so I’d like to tell her whole story.

After my grandfather died in 1923, my grandmother opened her maternity home, sometime in late 1926.

All of her own children were born between 1890 (the first two dying in infancy) and 1917, during her husband’s lifetime, none of them in that building, which was not built until 1920. Only two of them were even left at home to live in the house by then, my father and my uncle Bernie (Bernard), who both had to move into the attic when the home opened. The structure was always known in the family as “the big house,” to distinguish it from “the bungalow” - the original tiny family home that remained in the backyard, and was rented out every summer before the days of motels.

The oldest daughter was my Aunt Peg (Margarette/Margaret Long Weis), born in 1896. She did not “grow up” helping in the maternity home. She was already thirty years old when it opened, and returned from Philadelphia to help out, with her newborn daughter (Dorothy Weis Brooks, known as Dottie, who later inherited the house and donated the sign to the historical museum).

My cousin, Jack (John, quoted in the articles) was not “the only guy” born in the Long family during the period that the maternity home was open. He was, however, the only male who carried the Long name who was born during that time. Six of Hattie’s 12 grandchildren were born during that period, including two other boys - E. Michael Ackley, and his brother, James Ackley, sons of Dorothy Long Ackley, who was born the second daughter of Hattie in 1910. Three grandchildren were born before 1926, and three born after 1953.

Jack is also not “the last of the Longs.”

In order for that to happen, Jack (born in 1929), will have to outlive my brother, Jim (born in 1953). While going through some family stuff today

Mrs. Hattie Long delivered over 500 babies in her home on Montgomery Ave. (Hattie’s 146th birthday), I found a Leader article about her 76th birthday/Christmas (funny, I’m now 76 and it doesn’t seem as old anymore), which states that she retired and closed the maternity home in October 1951 when Burdette-Tomlin Hospital (now Cape Regional) opened and was ready to accept maternity patients.

I still vividly remember being punished in June 1950 for making too much noise while “the babies were sleeping.” We always stayed in the bungalow the last week of June, as soon as I got out of school, combining vacation at the beach with visiting Grandma and the rest of the clan. My mother also got it ready for the summer renters after being cllosed up all winter. Walking to the beach, we had to pass Memorial Lane at Fox Park, and that is exactly when the Privet blooms, so this time of year the aroma of Privet takes me right back. It was wonderful!

More from Carol on the history of her family: When I was little, I heard that my grandfather had come over with his two brothers. But he doesn’t have any brothers, just six sisters. The “brothers” referred to were close friends from his hometown, and they all came together to work as Pound Fishermen in Anglesea. I now know that Hattie’s sisters, Eva and Carrie, also married Swedish fishermen from Råå, quite likely his two best friends. Many people took more “American” names as part of naturalization, but I am not sure when my grandfather changed his from Johan Martin Svensson. His father was a huge and fierce blacksmith known as “Long John,” because of his height, and this is the source of the new last name.

This particular Old House, a charming summer cottage filled with generations of memories, has been in Andrea Valentino’s family since 1937.

Sadly, she and her husband Jim, now year-round residents, realized it would be more cost-effective to tear the house down and rebuild.

With a demolition date of September 2022 in place, the Valentino’s reached out to The Sun this winter in the hopes that with a bit of publicity they could save the house, offering it for free to anyone inclined to relocate it. Although they would not charge for the house, the investor would incur moving expenses.

Although Jim was initially skeptical, seeing the property above the Shamrock being moved gave him hope that their much-loved Old House could get a well-deserved second chance, too.

As with many of The Sun’s social media posts pertaining old beach houses, the response was overwhelmingly passionate. Having gone a bit viral, it caught the attention of Joe Holden of CBS Philly News. He reached out to Andrea to help her advertise it on the air.

Within a week, Andrea had a list of 7 prospects who made appointments to look at the house. Some even came

Every Old House Has a Story with house movers. Hopes were high and looking favorable, however, each of the prospects had its own dilemma. For instance, one girl hoped to move it offshore, but in order to do that, the house would have to be cut in two. That isn’t unusual for a house move. But in this case, it presents a problem because the walls are made of plaster and could not be cut without crumbling apart. As this edition goes to press, it stands that the house will be demolished unless of course a miracle happens to save it.

As with every Wildwood house, theirs has its own special story to tell. Andrea’s parents, Connie and Herman Phillips, bought the house from an uncle who owned Wildwood nightclubs in the 1930’s through the 1950’s. The Phillips operated the kitchens in three local North Wildwood establishments including Bennie’s (now Owens), the Little Club and the Wharf.

Connie had big dreams for her young sons, Lou and Richie (Andrea was born 10 years later) and, with the intention of providing them with a good education, opened The Colonial Restaurant, which was located between 16th & 17th and Central (where the laundromat currently is at the Colonial condos). Her hard work paid off, her dreams were happily realized, and both sons worked on the NWBP for over 10 years to help pay their way through Law School and Med School, respectively. Sadly, both of Andrea’s brothers, a doctor and a lawyer, passed away while only in their 60s.

Like the true Wildwood lover she is, Andrea has a wonderful lifetime of memories warmly preserved within her childhood summer home, where she always felt safe and protected.

“It is a happy home,” Andrea said, knowing “that whoever gets it will always have happiness.”

Here’s hoping their Old House has many more happy stories soon to be told by the sea.

ANGLESEA IRISH SOCIETY held its annual “BOOTS AT THE BEACH” Country Music Festival the weekend of September 17 & 18 under clear sunny skies and warm temperatures. There was a great lineup of continuous country bands on the outdoor stage, line dancing, refreshments, and vendors selling western clothes, boots, and cowboy hats of every description.

Many folks stopped by the Wildwood Catholic Academy table to purchase their raffle tickets for the Lincoln SUV. The lucky winner was local Rex Garrison, jr.

n August 31st, 2021, Fred & Karen Schmidt, along with their children Rich & Brenda and their families, got together for one last family dinner to say goodbye to their home in the Anglesea section of the island (across from Rick’s Seafood).

Over the years, this sturdy old Sears Craftsman House endured every hurricane, flood and snowstorm, but sadly, did not survived the wrecking ball.

The house was home to generations of seaside lovers, having originally been built by John and Pauline Carlson in approximately 1927, where they raised their five children. Included in their huge family tree were Martha Carlson Harkins and Ruth Carlson Larcombe.

In 1957, another family became part of the house’s story when Chick and Polly Strothers purchased the

home from the Carlsons and raised their three children Karen, Raven, and John there.

In 1972, more home-grown chapters were added when Fred and Karen Schmidt purchased the house from Karen’s parents, Chick & Polly, and spent 49 1/2 happy years in it.

Their children, Richie and Brenda, were 4 and 2 at the time, respectively.

With 64 years of memories filling the house, Karen reminisced about those early days. “There were no homes behind us and Pine Ave. was a dead-end street. As children, we spent many Saturdays playing in the high dunes, building forts and swimming off the beach back there.” (Anglesea Beach Colony had not been built yet and the city dump was located back there).

renovations during those coastal years, with many tales to tell, notably about its original deed, which forbid anyone from hanging fishing nets outside (as the house was within close proximity to the thenflourishing Anglesea fishing village). Within its storied walls, there were rooms full of antiques, many of which were inherited, such as sets of Mark Twain books, vintage typewriters and fine China.

Last summer, when Fred & Karen knew it was time to put the house on the market and move to something that didn’t require so much maintenance, they held over 20 yard sales, working hard to prepare the inside of the house for realtor showings.

One day, Ben Hall fortuitously came by and made a yardsale purchase

that led to the Purchase of all Purchases. Having never stepped foot inside, Ben, who is the son of Art & Patricia of CMC Herald, made an offer on the property the Schmidt’s couldn’t refuse.

Fred and Karen have settled into their new retirement home offshore, and while emotions ran high over such a sentimental transition, the adjustment wasn’t as difficult as they had anticipated. Perhaps, it’s because as all seaside home owners know, the memories created within those salt-scented walls will travel with them wherever they go, and the sweetest stories born by the sea never truly end. They reside warmly within each Wildwood-loving heart…

Lazarus House Food Pantry’s Best Day Ever!

Greater Wildwood Yacht Club Founded in 1938

Youth Sailing Program offered each summer This seven week program is for ages 8-17 Frank Stone of Lazurus House expresses his gratitude for the donations Wildwood’s local food pantry the Lazurus House is an ecumenical ministry that opened in 2010 under the guidance of the Greater Wildwood Ministerial Association, and is supported by a variety of religious denominations throughout the Wildwoods. Donations and volunteers are the heartbeat of the Lazurus House.

“It was one of the best days in the history of the Lazurus House,” stated Frank Stone, referring to the day when the Barefoot Country Music Festival folks came to extend their gratitude to the Wildwoods for hosting their concert on the beach (coming to town June 16th, 2022) They chose the Lazurus House as their charity of choice, thanks to the good people at Wildwood Convention Center who referred them.

Barefoot’s donation consisted of $10,000 worth of groceries from the local Acme market. Then Acme in turn partnered with Barefoot with an additional $5,000 check to L.H. And as if that wasn’t more than enough, owners of Seaport Pier on the boardwalk donated an additional $10,000 to the pantry.... all on the same day!

Wildwood High School was also the recipient of the kindness poured over

by Barefoot when they donated new musical instruments to the school band program.

And so it goes, kindness is contagious... members of Wildwood Public Works showed up to Acme with large trucks and lots of manpower to help load and deliver all the goods to the pantry.

Wildwood by-the-sea has always been advertised as a health resort, a sanctuary by the sea. For many years, the entire North end of the island seemed to magically glow from the neon lights, illuminating our sweet haven. On one bright romantic evening many moons ago, from across the Hereford Inlet, young newlyweds Jake & Julie Skovira stood on the balcony of the Windrift Motel, mesmerized by that glowing blue light spanning across the sea.

So captivated were they, that they set out the very next day on Ocean Drive, which connects the barrier islands of Stone Harbor and North Wildwood.

They soon discovered that magical glow was coming from the rooftop neon sign of the newly-built Acropolis Motel. Having spent their seaside time in Stone Harbor, they soon “island hopped” to Wildwood, led by the brightest lights. They felt blessed to know Rose & Jim Konidis, who rented the same room to them several times each summer.

As true seashore lovers know, being in the proximity of water can be among

the most cost-effective ways of reducing the stress and anxiety of daily living. Jake and Julie happily found this to be true within their new, oceanfront vacation spot.

For 50 years, Jake and Julie have been coming to the Wildwoods, their own seaside sanctuary, more recently staying at the Athens on 2nd & Ocean, yet another seaside motel with glowing blue lights.

Thanks to the allure of those neon lights, to date they’ve made 140 trips to Wildwood by-the-sea, and, like many Wildwood lovers, have passed that love onto their children and grandchildren.

After all these years, they are still captivated by the lure of the blue sea, the blue skies and, of course, those enchanting blue neon lights, which wonderfully guided their way to the Wildwoods so long ago. Blue is the most fitting color, since blue, after all, is the color of peace, naturally found right here by the sea…

Walt Dougherty has been in the annual post Labor Day, North Wildwood Surf Fishing Tournament for 40+ years.

He remembers when first place winners received a free Wildwood vacation... And when Al’s Surf & Tackle Shop by Moore’s donated all kinds of great prizes.

Today’s winners still take home a nice new rod & reel. But as any true fisherman knows, the real prize is hooking a Keeper.

So far, Walt has only caught small stuff that he recalls backintheday were called “Cape May goodies”.

In 2012 Walt took 1st place, but won 2nd & 3rd many times. Happy Fishing Walt!

ne of the many hats I wore during my years with the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse was that of historian. In that capacity, I compiled a list of as many shipwrecks and groundings that occurred in or near the Hereford Inlet, as I was able to find. This was relatively easy to do for those that occurred after the US Life Saving Service was established in 1872 and these events were recorded in the Service log books. Before that time however, things get a little sketchy and the further back you go, the sketchier it gets.

Shipwrecks occurred all along the New Jersey Coast long before we became the United States of America and even before we were a British colony. Very few people lived along the coast and none on the barrier islands in those early years. Shipwreck victims were at the mercy of the sea with no chance of rescue from land. Going through my research material I recently rediscovered an old newspaper article concerning a truly terrible, heart wrenching event. It relates the news about a wreck that happened in the Hereford Inlet in 1766, 108 years before the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse was constructed. The wreck was that of the “snow” Nancy. This is not to be confused with the “brig” Nancy that was sunk in the Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet in Wildwood Crest in 1776.

PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL Letter sent from CAPE MAY, dated April 6th, 1766 “I am persuaded the following lines will relate distress and sadness to you: However, I am bound to rehearse and to tell you that on the 6th day of this instant, on Hereford Bar, which is 4 leagues N.E. of the pitch of Cape May, the poor unfortunate snow, Nancy, Capt. Kerr from Bristol, was by a violent gale of wind at E.N.E., forced on shore and is become a forlorn wreck, which proved to be a watery coffin to all, except four persons, who only escaped out of a crew of 27 in number. The Capt. and mate are of the drowned and some others of note and distinction. Many of their dead bodies are drifted to shore and some goods also.”

Hereford Inlet April 6, 1766 Wreck of the Snow “Nancy” “Humanity would teach me to exert myself and to use the utmost of my care, which I purpose to do without any other license till I receive further orders or see some of you. By all means let some interested persons come down immediately on sight hereof, with the bearer. The dead I shall keep till the bearer returns and not suffer to be crammed in the sand. I saw them, poor hearts, in the height of their distress, where wind and sea had no pity, but could do no more than regret and sympathize with my fellow mortals, while overwhelmed with calamities in the raging waves.”

The following account received since our last (report) “The snow, Nancy, Walter Kerr master, mentioned in our last, left Bristol the 17th of January, and King Road the 3rd of February following, bound for this port. About the beginning of March they fell in with another sloop, Ann, John Jones, master, from Road Island, bound for Jamaica. But being in great distress, Capt. Kerr took Jones and his people on board the snow and proceeded on his voyage until the 5th. When he got soundings in 25 fathoms water at 6 o’clock in the evening and by observations he had that day, he was to the southward of Cape Henlopen and stood a N.N.W. course until 12 o’clock, when he laid the snow to in 15 fathom water.

At 4 o’clock in the morning she struck on Hereford Bar about 7 miles to the northward of Cape May, being carried thither, is supposed, by a strong current. For the Capt. And others on board, by filling the sails to press over her, but soon found their mistake by feeling the land very near them.

On this, some of the people, contrary to the Captains orders, cut away the masts. Others got into the boats, cut the gripes, and the sea soon washed them overboard. Then cutting or slopping

the fasts, drove to the shore, where four landed Hutchinson the carpenter, Magnus Sinclair, John Glowens, and John Stansbury, which were all that were saved out of twenty eight persons. For the wind was blowing a violent hard gale by this time, at N.E. and by N. No assurance could be given them from the shore, the vessel unfortunately heeled off toward the sea, which broke 30 feet high, and the distressed people obliged to continue on her deck until 4 o’clock in the afternoon hanging by the quarter deck rails and upper gunnel as she lay on her beam ends. But at low water they made a raft, as is supposed, all got on it. Expecting the tide of flood to drive them to shore, the raft came there well secured. A hen coop lashed to the upper part, with their clothes stuffed in it, coming ashore underneath the raft, showed it had overset, and the people all perished. Twelve of their bodies have been found and decently buried. The persons drowned by this unfortunate wreck are : Captain Walter Kerr, John Oliver, his mate, Fortescue, an apprentice and five others of the ship’s crew.

The Rev. Wilson, The Rev. Giles of New York, Mr. Mott, a tanner from Connecticut and the master and two mates of a Road Island brig. that was sold in Bristol – names forgotten. No letters or papers have been found and very little of the vessel or cargo saved. Upon the whole, the circumstances of this affair make it one of the most melancholy losses that ever happened on this coast.

Jersey, meeting some of our family at North Wildwood City Hall for a special ceremony held in honor of my late brother, Chief Tony Sittineri. It is a swearing in ceremony that names the “Cop of the Year” award after him.

This past winter we were pummeled with some very nasty weather, winds, ice, etc. there was quite a bit of damage to properties. One night during a bout of this severe weather, I noticed on our security camera a problem at our house.

Being over 200 miles away, I panicked and called my son for advice. He called our North Wildwood Police Department and within minutes of that call an officer showed up at our house, took care of the problem and proceeded to check out the rest of the house. I then realized what a help the department is. We take it for granted that once the season is over, that’s it. But sometimes Mother Nature has different ideas. We are so blessed to have a second home in North Wildwood, as are many of our neighbors, but it also means a second set of worries.

Chief John Stevenson and his men do an amazing job of giving peace of mind to the citizens of this town. They have the dangerous job of bringing law and order to our community, but they are at the same time, very personable and go above and beyond to help and assist the

community, particularly my family. If I sound biased, I am, I have a police family. My brother, Tony Sittineri was a past North Wildwood Chief, his son-in-law Kevin was also on the North Wildwood force, his grandson Kevin Jr. served in North Wildwood as both a summer cop and then a full time officer, another grandson Stephen is with the New Castle County Police. Nephew Rich is a retired Middle Township officer, grand niece Tori is a state Investigator for the Division of Gaming Enforcement. My three sons, Rob, Ray and Mike and granddaughter Alexa are also in law enforcement.

When I drive around town I enjoy seeing the many houses that have flags and signs honoring our brave officers. But it’s funny what some people think. When they are doing something wrong and an officer stops them they say, “too many cops, they are always bothering us”. But when they have a problem they say “where are the cops, when you need them”. We need more respect for our brave men in blue.

I for one will always keep that Blue Light shining.

Mother nature has been unkind with this spring weather. Regardless of weather you Better get the tackle early this year. The Flounder season will open on May 2nd. It is the earliest flounder opening for quite some time. If mother nature could turn off her wind machine, we might have some good fishing in the back waters. Fishing for flounder in the back waters it is all about location and tides. The locations you might check bottom edge with drops from shallow warm water on the outgoing tide. The 2022 regulations have set two slot fish of seventeen inches to 17.99999 and one over eighteen inches. Thank goodness the regulators are not having us use the metric measurements. The spring run of stripers should have gotten the blood pumping. The stripers numbers are on the rise. Hopefully, this might make the fall season a good one.

I might as well start out complaining about the Spring weather. I really hate the Delaware Bay when the wind makes it look like a cross of coffee and mud. I wonder how the Drum Fish can find the bait in that murky water. The 2021 season for Drum was early and excellent fishing. The bay water was warmer last year. Once the water warms up the Drum bite should start the bite. We all would love to see the Drum season be like last year.

If you never had the opportunity to fish for Drum with light tackle, put it on your bucket list. They are more aggressive, giving you one heck of a fight on lighter gear.

As the month of May ebbs away it brings warmer water. The water calms and the variety of fish increase in the Bay. The variety includes Stripers, Bluefish, Flounder, Weakfish, and who else knows. I get a kick out of the drama about sharks. The Dela-

ware Bay is one of the major estuaries for Shark breeding. I do not want to scare the swimmers, but the Sixty-foot slough hosts large Tiger Sharks. The slough parallels Bayshore beach from the concrete ship up to the upper bay.

It is only approximately one and half miles from the beaches on the bay. The breeders can be in the two hundred– 300-pound class.

The deep blue ocean will have the same varieties of fish. The Seabass season opens in middle May. The ocean water will have bait fish to draw the predatory species in the ocean. Fresh Flounder fillets breaded and fried for dinner fit for a royalty.

Seabass equals the quality in taste for dinner like Flounder. The Seabass will bite on all types of structure. The artificial reefs, sloughs and wrecks can be hot spots for multiple species.

The variety of early tournaments start with Drum fish in the bay. The early tournaments in the ocean will be in June for Mako sharks. The rest of the summer offshore tournaments will be Tuna, Marlin another pelagic species.

Do not hesitate to check with local tackle stores for current information on your choice of fishing. The Cape May County area offers a variety types of ocean trips. Whale/Dolphins watching trips, Fishing Party boats, private rental of Pontoon boats, and small back bay rental boats.

I have been fortunate to be on the water frequently during the year. I found it difficult finding the words explaining the moments of Whales breaching close to your boat. That vision will be a great memory from the wonders of the sea.

Over the years, we’ve compiled quite a collection of vintage swimwear and beach props to help us recreate our signature nostalgic look. However, for this particular idea, we needed the same time period as the age of the house which dates back to 1912. When we reached out to Joe Toland and his Old Time Photos, he was more than willing to loan some of his treasured outfits. Thank you Joe for helping me showcase such a nostalgic cover.

As our world continually changes, it’s comforting to know some things never change. Life by the sea has always been a bright reflection of simpler times, where life’s little pleasures are forever timeless…

Bob & Kate Dettrey love spending time with their little ones Myles & Maryn at their home in “Grassy” .

Bob grew up summering in the Wildwoods since 1994 and at his parents Grassy cottage since 2006. His mom Laura wouldn’t want to be any place else. She loves seeing her grandchildren growing up and living the best childhood ever. They’re always outside playing in the water or with turtles.. crabbing, clamming, fishing, swimming, rowing boats ...They even have a small swimming pool in their yard for those sultry, summer low tide hours.

Bob & Kate, who are year round West Wildwood residents since 2014, purchased their Grassy cottage several years ago. They are slowly but surely working on this Sears & Roebuck Kit house delivered by rail in 1912, in hopes to one day restore it to its original state, while also enjoying every minute of the summer spent together exploring their backyard, that is, the adjacent historic railoroad bed and the vast meadow and waterways abounding with every kind of beautiful shore bird.

The Dettrey’s philosophy is the further off the grid, the better... “Grassy” is truly their heaven on earth.
