“Summertime... Summertime”

August is the Sunday of summer. I didn’t come up with that saying, but I quite like it. June is Friday because the weekend hasn’t started yet – there’s still some school left. July is Saturday and it’s packed with sun and fun with little thought of tomorrow. And August is like Sunday. It’s still a great day ~ month ~ but things are winding down and you need to think about school on Monday. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. Summer days may technically be long with over 15 hours of daylight, but oh how the months are short! Especially July. Is it possible the infamous lyrics from Wildwood Days were written about this all-too-fleeting seventh month? May we pause right here and sing these words as our anthem to July. . . “May every day be a holiday and every night be Saturday night!” Soon comes August ~ and Sundays. The end of the craziness is in sight for many local business people who by now have affixed their August smiles on their faces (the August smile is simply smiling through the near exhaustion caused by the summer crush.) It’s a bittersweet time. Summer friends are heading to their winter homes. The carefree beach days are dwindling and our favorite time of the year ~Summer~ is on the wane. But as someone so famously said “it’s not over til it’s over!" So go have some fun-in-the-sun. Grab a fistful of the summer of ‘21 and eat an entire bucket of Curley Fries... all by yourself. Take a ride on the Tram Car until you tire of hearing “Watch the tram car please!”. Stay in the ocean until your fingers and toes wrinkle up. Do not give in to Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday until... Until when, the month of September (aka the best-kept-secret) is over!

w i th C A PT. GA RY SLOA N Welcome Anglers! Well, the spring season seemed to be a hit or miss game with fishing. The Drum fish in the bay really dominated in the early season. The ocean seemed to be a little chilly, slowing down an early showing of some species close to the beach. The deeper offshore bite for Tog and Seabass provides really good catches for the long trips.

Finally, we are entering the peak of our fishing seasons at the Jersey shore. This will bring the entire range of species from Seabass, Flounder, and Blues close to shore. The offshore crowd will have the range of Tuna, Sharks, and Marlin. The tournament season adds some spice to the fishing days with large cash Calcutta’s and Prize winnings. The inshore reef areas will be the hot spots for Seabass, Flounder, and Blues. August will bring some Triggerfish, which seemed to have declared our area as their new summer home. The Weakfish seem to be on the rise with improving numbers compared to the last 15 years. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel should continue to claim the 5-fathom bank occupied territory. They are great fun for some young anglers to get their thrills with a fish giving them a battle. There are plenty of charter boats available for the opportunity to have a great day on the ocean. Nature’s show of birds, turtles, dolphins, and occasional shark sightings is part of the many amazing sea life right off our shore. The huge deep blue ocean can create the unknown anticipation like the excitement of a Christmas morning gift prior to ripping it open.

If boating is not your preference the local beaches offer good locations for fishing. Kingfish, Bluefish, Flounder, Weakfish are the most common to land. Check with your local tackle stores for information on gear and where to try out your luck. Local piers are available and also provide small boat rentals. Introducing the youth to Nature and helping them understand the importance of these resources is critical. I would even suggest, it is a responsibility for all adults. Those youngsters as adults will make decisions effecting the future of environment and all wildlife. Those days will be a memory for life watching the wide smile and excitement of landing a fish. Those moments are what life is really all about. Your heart will be full of joy from the day’s events while enjoying a relaxing period away from the daily schedule of life. Enjoy and God Bless,

Captain Gary Sloan, North Wildwood, NJ

12 “Come to the beach where the sea is blue and little white waves come running to you....

The Wirtz Family Summers on Grassy Sound

Like generations of Wildwood lovers, Jessie Wirtz has fond memories of her summers spent at Grassy Sound. As our world continually changes, it’s comforting to know some things never change. Life by the sea has always been a bright reflection of simpler times, where life’s little pleasures are forever timeless… “My brother and sister and I enjoyed our summers spent at Grassy Sound, with so many kids to play, swim and fish with. We had so many cousins, and when they visited, we would have to sleep sideways to fit three in a bed! We also had to eat in shifts because everyone couldn’t fit around the table. My grandfather worked for the railroad and would take the train to Grassy Sound to fish. He packed his lunch in a shoebox, which was the custom in those days and exactly how the name Shoobies came about. Fortunately when I got married, my husband, Bob was a schoolteacher with summers off. We, of course, spent our summers in our Grassy Sound cottage. We had a small boat and our kids, Beth, Bobby and Rich loved to go swimming and riding in it to the sandbar. It was a quiet and easy place to live. Going to the beach and boardwalk was one of their favorite things to do. When Dad had a VW bus, he’d take the whole gang along for a ride, neighborhood kids, too. When my sons were teenagers, they got summer jobs on the boardwalk while Beth worked at the boat rental place. Later in life, my mom bought a house up the road, which eventually became my sister’s, enabling more memories of happy summers by the sea…”

Joseph Wright US Air Force Airman First Class Airman of the Month

Joseph Wright sent in a few photos from his lifeguard & military days. He served on the Wildwood Beach Patrol in 1964, and then again when he returned home from Germany in 1975 after enlisting in the US Air Force. Pictured on the chair with a girl from Montreal, “J Dub”, as he is remembered here in the “Woods”, fondly recalls, “It was a rough job but somebody gotta do it...” :-) After that summer he headed to Nebraska for college. He is pictured as AIRMAN of the MONTH at 792nd Radar Sq. (ADC), in N. Charleston AFS, SC 29404, 1965. A special honor indeed. Thanks J. Dub!

Aunts Shirley & Sylvia Palmer with friend Nick the barber Lana Turner Mac Donald and Carol Turner Leeper love to reminisce about their days growing up in old Anglesea

Aunt Shirley with Cozy Morley

M

y sister Carol & I share many fond memories of growing up in the early days of Anglesea. If you spent time here in the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s, you most likely went to Sylvia’s Restaurant (where Curran’s is today) or D&S Cold Cuts, (where Joe Joe’s Pizza is today) owned by our Aunt Sylvia Gerner and Aunt Shirley Palmer. In 1966, Aunt Shirley and our mother, Doris Calamaro, were partners in D&S Cold Cuts. In 1982, mom decided she wanted to open a gift shop, so she turned her half of the business over to her sister Shirley. Aunt Shirley operated D&S until 2002, when our mom sold the building. Aunt Shirley looked forward to seeing all the children and parents come into the store every summer. Many of those children even called her Aunt Shirley. She watched many of them grow up and then bring their kids, where she loved taking photos of “her kids”. She loved them all and they loved her. Sadly, Aunt Shirley died on September 15, 2017 and is sorely missed. We miss seeing her riding her bike, walking the boardwalk and sitting outside our cousin Joe’s Curiosity Shop.(next door to Joe Joe’s) Along with Carol & I, Aunt Shirley was a Dr. Margaret Mace baby, living her whole life in North Wildwood and beautifully leaving her mark in the island’s history. Contributing to that full memory book, Sylvia’s was a wonderful little restaurant on the corner of 1st and Olde New Jersey Avenues, where Curran’s now resides. Aunt Sylvia served breakfast and lunch and re-opened for the late-night crowd. After the bars closed, she would have hungry people forming a long line. Many agreed she had the best creamed dried beef they ever ate!

Aunt Sylvia

Aunt Sylvia married George Gerner, the grandson of George Redding, a former mayor of North Wildwood and state senator. Their marriage didn’t last, but they had a daughter, Joan, who would later have her own daughter, Theresa. Joan tragically passed away at 36 years old and a year later Theresa passed away from childhood leukemia. During such a tragic time in her life, Aunt Sylvia found the love of her life. He was a retired firefighter from Philadelphia named “Blackie” Bell, who, unfortunately, died about two years after Theresa. Most people didn’t know the heartache Aunt Sylvia endured in such a short time span, but her contributions here in our seaside community are well remembered. She died on October 9, 1996. Offering his own much-appreciated services in town, Nick “The Barber” Matacena was Aunt Sylvia’s landlord who came to Anglesea in 1929. Nick was a kind and caring man who befriended many in the neighborhood, including Aunt Sylvia. Nick’s wife died in the mid 1950’s. They had no children. Many years after his wife’s death, Nick took in a local man by the name of Harry (Diapers) Thomas. Harry owned a home on the 100 block of West Chestnut Avenue (it is still there but remodeled). Harry had difficulty taking care of himself, so Nick took him in. They were great company for each other. Harry died in the mid 1970’s. One morning in February 1978, Nick’s barber pole was not on, immediately alerting everyone that something was terribly wrong. He was a barber right up to the day he died. We fondly remember him and hope to one day proudly share more about our Anglesea roots and all the memories they inspire.

WALLY’S CAFE By Josh Kinney

Wally & Doris Carty in their glory days Wally Carty

Wally Carty was a real character, a genuine, honest community man who worked diligently, living to take care of his family and make people laugh.

Wally would walk in every day wearing black pants and a white shirt with the top button undone. During his 18 hour work days, when he wasn’t playing dress up and acting silly, this outfit defined his appearance.

Wally clattered the last two empty mugs and wiped down the bar with a soapy wet cloth. He held the glasses, clear, smooth and familiar, and placed them by the sink with mounted brushes where his young daughter Debby loved to wash the dishes. Dressed in an old army jacket and sporting a fake mustache, he hummed the tune of “When the Saints Go Marching in” while he finished straightening up. In his mind, he was reliving yesterday when he entered the bar wearing his suit, waving a small American flag and singing the song, leading a marching crowd of fun loving partiers through the bar. Outside, the streetlights flickered on the humid southeast corner of Walnut and Olde New Jersey Avenue as the sun’s glimmering morning light began beaming across the mighty Atlantic just a few blocks away. Michelle, 5, and Wally Jr., 13, barreled through the side door from their upstairs apartment home, their bare feet scampering across the spotless sanded floors, past the phone booth in the lobby and into the main bar area. Michelle swung in a circle around the giant metal pole that stood as a support beam, one in which Wally’s youngest, Lori, would climb telling customers it was her birthday so they would sing to her and give her money during her “many birthdays” throughout the summer. The man who was liked by everyone smiled and made his way over to his kids who had rummaged into the back room with the seven pool tables, couches, and the television. Wally’s was one of the only bars to have one at the time. He was meticulous about the building, it was his kingdom, but he was too humble to be a king. Say his name or mention his bar and anyone who lived, worked or visited Wildwood during that time will stop and tell their stories of him. Wally was a real character, a genuine, honest community man who worked

Wally was meticulous about his building, it was his kingdom, but he was too humble to be a king. {Over the years, some other names of this bar were Miss Kitty’s, Bullfeathers, Shady O’s, and the sign that stood on its empty lot since 2007, the “Kingfish Bar & Grill”}

diligently, living to take care of his family and make people laugh. “He was the nicest guy, he’d give you the shirt right off his back,” said his daughter Michelle, after years of observing her dad and learning from his fun loving sacrificial lifestyle. When he passed away in 1978, just five years after selling the bar he originally purchased in 1950, Michelle and her siblings discovered her father’s safety deposit box which contained countless IOU’s from people. “That’s just the way he was,” said Wally Jr., “He wasn’t tight with his money at all.” In fact, he was always buying people drinks, even in his own bar and half of the time didn’t even charge the $18 weekly room renters above the bar. Wally would walk in every day wearing black pants and a white shirt with the top button undone. During his 18 hour work days, when he wasn’t playing dress up and acting silly, this outfit defined his appearance. Wally was a popular man to be around. “People would always say, ‘oh you’re Wally’s daughter’ when I was younger. It made me feel like my dad was a celebrity,” said Michelle. In a sense, Wally himself was an icon on the island, and his bar that stood in the midst of the bustling Angelsea bar district was no exception to the notoriety.

Musical entertainment played a key role at Wally’s, especially during Saturday night jam sessions. Bands like The Cellar Doors, a pop group from Glassboro would play from 9pm to 3am with only a 40 minute break at 1:40. Singers like Nan Jones, Georgie Shaw and Jimmy MiGinny would frequent the bar with impromptu performances. Back then, it was an age of genuine laid back relationships, where all bar owners were friends and would buy rounds for each other’s customers. Food was shared and rather than competing, various companies and bars helped each other out. Between the loyal bartenders like Jimmy Bright, Dave Smith and Buddy Kelly, and the regulars at Wally’s, were the people who became a huge extended family. For 30¢, customers enjoyed an ice cold mug of beer, a glass for 15¢ and a shot for 40¢. The bar was famous for its delicious crabs that were served already cleaned out. Wally’s was a barefoot bar with people in bathing suits who came up from the beach for lunch or a drink, the original “No Shower Happy Hour!” Though the bar’s last call came on January 1, 1973, Wally sold his place. Wally made his family an incredible livelihood filled with priceless memories, He was a sincere and loyal man of integrity that stayed true to his word. Gazing into his father’s safety deposit box and sifting his hands through the dozens of IOU’s, Wally Jr. wiped away a tear. “Dad was such a hard worker,” he said, “He gave us kids everything we wanted.”

Michael & Marie Palughi in their happy place Michele Palughi’s extended family traveled from Jersey City to Wildwood every summer for their two week vacation, staying in four or five bungalows on E. Taylor Ave. She has great memories of those island days, when they loved to stay at the beach until 5 or 6 o’clock, where her dad Michael would make boats in the sand and tell her to hold on and row. Her and her siblings learned how to dig for clams, crack them on pipe lines, then feed them to the gulls. When not “clamming,” they collected shells that her family would water paint after our beach days, souvenirs of our great Wildwood summers.

This Old Carty~Sheeran Home

~Lewis Carroll, “Solitude”

by Dorothy McMonagle Kulisek There is indeed, perhaps, no better way to hold communion with the sea than sitting in the sun on the porch of a home that overlooks the sea. Above the front stoop of Bill & Michelle Sheeran’s home, hangs a sign that reads, “Take Time to Sit by the Sea.” On my way to the beach, I’ve walked past this particular house 100’s of times; always with a deep longing in my heart to live so close to the sea and be able to sit on a porch and watch its ever-changing nature. Little did I know that one day I would have the privilege to learn about its history and meet the family inside. I am speaking about the house at 212 E. 3rd Ave. in North Wildwood on the corner of 3rd and Surf. It was built in the 1920’s but Wally & Doris Carty didn’t purchase it until around 1948 after they had established Wally’s Café at Walnut & Olde New Jersey Aves. Wally made the new seaside cottage his family’s summer home while they lived atop the bar the rest of the year. It wasn’t until 1958 that he installed heat in the house and moved in year round. Back in those days, big families were accustomed to living in small houses. It was just the modest way of the times. There comes a time in every family when your parents pass away and the family estate either goes on the market for sale or stays in the family. In this case, it made sense that Michelle Carty Sheeran move her family into the house since she was the only one of her siblings still residing in Wildwood at the time of their mothers’ death in 1998. Bill and Michelle Sheeran, along with their children, Kevin, Meridith and Emily, (and dog at the time) Murphy, made the big move from 4th to 3rd Ave. As Michelle gave me the grand tour of one of my favorite old houses, we began on the porch where she said beach-goers would stop and marvel at the family parrot who made his home there. We went in the front door and I was shown where curtains were hung as dividers for her parents’ room that was about the size of today’s typical walkin closet. Michelle showed me where 4 children slept in 2 little rooms that each had a bunk bed. It’s easy to realize how much the times have changed today when you revisit yesterday. Michelle actually shared a room with her brother

~ that would be unheard of today! Over time, the Carty house underwent renovations. In the 50’s, the upstairs attic was converted into 2 teeny weeny bedrooms with teeny weeny windows and 7 ft. ceilings. In 1965, the most significant and memorable change made to the house was the addition of the Carty family rec room. I’m sure if the walls could talk they would have told me many more stories. Michelle said there wasn’t a day that went by from 1965 through 1978 that there wasn’t a party going on in there. For those of you that can say you were there, you’ll remember the pool table and the juke box and the TV and it had its own bathroom. It was designed so that Mom & Dad Carty could sit in the living room and see straight through to the rec room. That was, as long as the door was open! In 2002, Bill & Michelle hired Coastline Construction to do a major renovation to their little seaside bungalow. Their children were growing and the girls especially needed some more space between them. Jerry Rosenberg & Ricky Davis of Coastline probably never realized that one day they would be working in one of their old hangouts, “Club Carty!” Michelle showed me the fireplace that was built in the wall when her mother had the house renovated in 1981 after her father passed. Michelle did not have the same tastes for dark wood and stone as her mother had. When it came time, Michelle and her carpenter son Kevin, went to it with a sledgehammer. The fireplace and mantle became Kevin’s first major woodworking project. He designed a colonial looking mantle with adjacent bookshelves on both sides. It’s up at the top of the stairs in an area that’s perfect for cozying up with a good book, a crackling fire, and unobstructed ocean views... indeed a spot to “Take time to sit by the sea.” Bill & Michelle have transformed this old house along with the corner it sits on across from the sea. However, all the renovations in the world will not change the story of the house. While sitting on the porch, Michelle will occasionally hear people comment on what a lovely home they have. She’ll still have people stop and ask if the family with the parrot still lives here. She’ll say, “that’s me!”

Ben & Don’ Don’s Grand Dame ~Circa 1906~

Ben presents the pocket doors between the living & dining rooms

As our Sun readers can fondly attest,

every house in Wildwood has its own seaside story to tell. Don & Ben’s historic red Victorian is no exception. It was built in 1906 and holds the proud distinction of being one of the first homes on the 200 E. block of 20th Avenue. While some of its story remains a bit of a mystery, according to the Wildwood “history books,” Martin & Louisa Rehfuss owned the residence circa 1924. Before Don & Ben officially made it their own in the year 2000, it sat vacant for 17 years (patiently waiting for its next owner/ chapter to begin). Next door neighbor (and Pacific Ave. store owner) Ruth Feld reportedly purchased the property during this time so she wouldn’t have to deal with the party noises coming from it and its partyseeking trespassers during the summer. By virtue, like any Old House Heroes, Don & Ben are fully devoted to their labor of love, meticulously restoring every inch of their Grand-old-Dame. Before the “redoing,” there was much “undoing” to be done including restoring a rather unsightly kitchen and the blocked-off fireplace and foyer columns once covered up by a former owner. Naturally, one of the first repair areas was the roof. Every last peek needed new custom flashing, which was an exorbitant cost, even 21 years ago. The turret alone was well over $5,000, with the entire roof repair costing $40,000.

We could argue (metaphorically, of course) that you can’t put a price on restoring a piece of Wildwood’s history, and ideally, we’d much rather see an old house restored than torn down, but that was one high price tag! Adding to their distress, Don and Ben emphasized how difficult it has always been to find contractors capable of doing the necessary work. That work more recently included replacing a 6’ tall door, which is not a standard size that can be easily purchased. We old house lovers are sympathetic to their struggles. Like any self-respecting lover of old homes, we here at The Sun have dreamt of having the resources to buy all of our favorite old cottages (which is quite a lengthy list!) to save them from the wrecking ball, thus keeping the island and our childhood memories intact. An unrealistic dream, perhaps (barring a multi-billion dollar lottery winning), but happily we’ve found another way to protect our wonderful Wildwood history and our sweet memoires through the stories and photos published right here in The Sun for the past 17 years. We hope that within those pages, our Wildwood past is preserved, and our readers are reminded that old houses really do tell the best stories by land and by sea… Thank you Ben & Don!

Don holds the original tin finial, a work of art in itself, that they had restored. The roof turret was graced with a new one during the restoration.

O

ne evening, I was at the counter of a restaurant on a dinner break and I found myself sitting next to the patriarch of the Hunt family, whom I only knew as “Old Man Hunt”. I think he was in his nineties at the time. While we were eating, he told me the following story: Toward the end of World War II, the black-out restrictions were eased and they were able to re-open Hunts Pier at night. At the far end of the pier was a “whip” kind of ride and part of it swung people out past the back edge of the pier over the ocean, some two or three stories below. Two sailors who were on some kind of pass or leave decided to ride this “whip”. As their car was swinging out over the ocean, it somehow snapped off of the ride and they were flung out into the deep, pitch dark water. People ran to the back railing, looking for the sailors, but there was no sign of them. The fire department came to the beach below the pier and scanned the ocean with their “five mile” lights. The beach patrol put out boats with searchlights but all of the efforts seemed to be of no avail. Mr. Hunt said that he was on the beach with the firemen hoping against hope that the sailors could be found. He looked up at the crowds lining the pier watching the rescue effort and the now stationary whip ride with its missing car silhouetted in the misty lights.

He thought about how something like this could have ever happened: two servicemen, having a little time for fun, flung into the ocean on a ride that he owned and was responsible for maintaining. He felt devastated. Then he heard a commotion coming toward him. It was a group of firemen and in the midst of them were the two sailors. Their soaked uniforms were ripped up and covered with sand and seaweed. The firemen brought them up to Mr. Hunt and said to them, “This is Mr. Hunt, he owns the amusement pier”. The sailors were laughing and smiling. One of them took Mr. Hunt’s hand and said, “Boy, what a ride!!!” Mr. Hunt, in the midst of his shock noticed the distinct smell of alcohol, as the sailors had been pretty drunk when they had gone on the whip. Mr. Hunt asked them if there was anything he could do. The sailors kind of hemmed and hawed and then Mr. Hunt said, “How would you fellows like special passes to ride all of the rides for free?” The sailors were so happy that they hugged him. To this day, I still try to picture those sailors flying out into the ocean because of a broken amusement ride and then later saying, “Boy, what a ride” and being so drunk they thought it was supposed to happen. 5 MILES of Blessings! Eyes that look at the world thru a lens of wonder, find those things that make it wonder-full!

Feast of the Assumption / Blessing of Sea will be held Saturday, August 14th at St. Ann Church, 4:30 PM Mass

NORTH WILDWOOD – In the interest of promoting homeless awareness, “Homeless Jesus,” a 7-foot bronze statue depicting a homeless man asleep on a bench, now resides on the front lawn of the North Wildwood United Methodist Church at 2nd & Central Aves. Initially inspired by Pastor Kate Aaronson’s encounter with the statue in Madrid, Spain, in the courtyard of the Almudena Cathedral, the church commissioned Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz to create a replica of the sculpture, which was dedicated on June 12th. The figure, covered in a face-shielding blanket, represents Jesus Christ, bearing “marks of crucifixion” on his feet and has been replicated in 100 worldwide locations, including Vatican City in Rome. Its objective is to inspire compassion in passersby while sharing the Gospel in a fresh way, as the church works toward creating a Homeless Jesus Fund, with proceeds aiding local food pantries and organizations.

THE BOARDWALK Original Selfies

“The photograph is the most important document, and there is nothing more damning to go down to posterity then a silly, foolish smile caught and fixed forever.“

Alethia Miller & Teri Taylor ~ Wildwood Locals, 1967

~M ark T wain

Sharon & Natalie McMonagle 1968 Elmer & Priscilla Pinker, Have you read their story in this issue?

Remember those “high

quality” tiny-squared strips of black and white photos you once took with your nearest and dearest on the boardwalk? Before cell phones and “selfies” were all the rage, the boardwalk photo booth was the place to capture Summertime by the sea. Behind that curtain, facing that tiny spinning chair, friends & family would cram together for their photo op, often arguing over ownership of the four photos that would eventually drop down outside the booth. Sadly, the souvenir boardwalk photomatic photo booth is nowhere to be found. On our never-ending quest for all things Wildwood classic, we here at The Sun are betting many of our readers are in possession of those tiny, tattered memoirs. You already know how much we love to publish your photos. Please send your golden oldies to us at address on bottom of the front cover:-)

by Dorothy McMonagle Kulisek It was the week before Christmas when my sister Natalie welcomed a visitor to her home carrying a box of treasured photos that had been tucked away in the corner of the attic in our once family home. My parents sold that house in 2008 when they had an addition built on their N. Wildwood home (purchased in 1968) with the plans of retiring here while accommodating a growing family.

Since 2004 when the inaugural issue of The Sun hit the streets, these treasured photos, stories and memories have been the heartbeat of this magazine. I’ve often wondered how my family spent every summer here, and have only a couple of childhood photos of our own. Mom thought it was just because we were simply enjoying every moment, and she wasn’t a big picture-taker. So this past Christmas, my family was in our glory as we went through the box together over the holidays, laughing and reminiscing at what our mom always refers to as “the best days of her life!” They sure were... and still are. This year marks our 53rd summer at 7th Street, all thanks to our parents, who knew what it took to keep a family together…a home at the shore!

36 “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” ~Victor Hugo

A typical scene in the Wildwoods of lines wrapping around the corners

good part of every issue of “The Sun” focuses on “the good old days” of summer in The Wildwoods. Now of course we know all summer days, past and present, are good down here. Those much more simpler, innocent times, however, that ended by the early 70’s, just seemed a lot more special. I’ve written many articles for The Sun about my own memories of the summers of my youth in the 1950’s to the early 70’s. One thing that just came to mind though was how much of a role music played in our lives back then. More so than now I think. I personally need music almost as much as I need food, water and air. I have to hear it every day and even when I’m not able to listen to it somehow, a song is probably going through my head. I was listening to it even before I was born. By that I mean my mother was a professional singer and worked pretty close up to my delivery day. I got a kind of a head start so to speak. Music is produced and heard year round but it seems to me that music heard in the summertime, at the seashore especially, remains in people’s memory the longest, forever associated with that year at the shore. If you mention a particular song to anyone that has spent summers in the Wildwoods, there is a good chance they will tell you the year of the summer that song came out. There is good reason for this. If you were an adult you might be on vacation from work, a youngster you were out of school for two months and down with your parents, or an older teenager or college student down here to work. But no matter who you were – you were thankful to be out of the same monotonous routine for a while. Out of the crowded dirty city, boring suburbs or institution like dorm room in almost total freedom. You wore what you wanted, woke up and went to bed when you wanted. Ate what and when you wanted. The warm sun, beach, ocean, the excitement of the boardwalk, the

Dick Clark’s first broadcast of American Bandstand was at the Starlight Ballroom on the Wildwood Boardwalk in 1957

entertainment in the nightclubs – all added up to create an almost magical fun filled, romantic, memorable environment for anyone vacationing here. Because of those very special days and nights of summer magic, any music heard during those times would be tattooed in your brain. And it was everywhere back then. Music seemed to be a steady background soundtrack of each summer. In those days it hung in the air like an invisible fog of sound . If you were on the boardwalk you could hear the current rock and roll hits coming both live and recorded from the Starlight Ballroom. If the air was right sometimes from a mile or more away. You could even feel that beat sometimes. When hundreds of teenagers were doing the stomp at the same time and you were close to the Starlight, it seemed liked even the boardwalk itself was vibrating. Many of the amusements played music as well. I had a summer job 1969-71 renting beach umbrellas from a stand on Maple Ave. beach. The Himalaya ride on Hunt’s Pier played top 40 hits 7 days per week from opening till closing. I know every word to every song that came out those summers – even the ones I didn’t like. If you were on the beach it wouldn’t just be from rides like the Himalaya that you would hear music. In those days before personal music devices, everyone had transistor radios. They were all tuned in to WIBG, WCMC, WFIL, WMID – whatever was coming in the clearest. You would hear a mixed symphony of all the current hits - all at the same time. I almost forgot that music coming from the beach grilles. If you walked (or even drove) down streets like Pacific or Atlantic Ave., you would hear live music from famous entertainers such as Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, Charlie Gracie, The Treniers. Bits and pieces of music that is, as the doorman briefly opened up to let in more

Charlie Gracie at the Bolero 1964

customers. In the case of the long forgotten afternoon jam sessions, sometimes those doors would be left wide open. Juke boxes in those days were very common. Every corner bar, soda shop, café and diner had one. Constant music that you would have to hear whether you wanted to or not chosen by whoever put a dime in. My fist job (at 13) in 1967 was as a busboy at Amato’s Italian Restaurant (later Palermo’s) at 18th and Atlantic in North Wildwood. There was a dishwasher named Ted, a lot older than me, who came from a rough neighborhood in D.C. He loved music – but just soul music. He would give me dimes and quarters all night long to feed into that machine. I still know all those songs by heart. Hardly a customer had a chance to put a dime in. If they did though, and played something like the Beach Boys – man would he cringe! I swear he must have put a good deal of his salary in that juke box. Air conditioning in vehicles or homes was almost unheard of then. So even relaxing on your front porch, walking down the street, or even sitting inside your own house or apartment - you could still hear music. It drifted from radios and TV’s inside other houses, from cars driving by with open windows, backyard parties. You could not get away from it – but it was so good back then I don’t think many even cared. I’m a bit embarrassed to say I pretty much stopped listening to new music about 1988, give or take a few years. Can’t tell you very much about anything after that. So in a way I’m a senior citizen who’s summer music soundtrack is finished. I can live with that though. It’s a wonderful soundtrack of some unforgettable summers. But man am I good at music trivia from those old days. Name me a song and I’ll tell you the summer.

Happy Summer 2021

There’s no place like home. Except the beach.

They Found Their

True Love inWildwood by-the-Sea

Ann and Salvatore DiTrolio found their True Love in Wildwood by-the-Sea in 1948. Married for 68 Years, Salvatore worked as a tailor and shoe repairman, while Ann graduated from Radiology School at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1947. They raised 6 children in Havertown, PA. Every August they would take off work for 2 weeks for their summer vacation in Wildwood Crest where they stayed at the Lista House on Forget-Me-Not and Pacific Aves. Eva Lista and Ann became good friends because of the DiTrolio family summer tradition. As is often true of the greatest love stories, their enduring love, which began in their very own seaside heaven so long ago, ended with a love that could not bear to go on without the other. Salvatore passed at the age of 92 on March 20, 2020, with Ann following him into eternity less than a year later in February 2021 at the age of 90.Thank you to their daughter Theresa for sharing with us.

While promoting awareness of the “Golden Age of Bands” (1880 – 1930), when American instrumental bands were emerging in local towns, this performance will pay tribute to the community bands who would welcome visitors as they would arrive at the beach. Fast forwarding to today, The Wildwoods have continued to be a special designation for many and this performance is designed to support community band appreciation and provide high quality music making opportunities by the sea. ~Josephine Hart

You and me, you and me, Oh how Happy we’ll be! Old photos are like glue that holds family stories together over time. These wonderful Wildwood photos taken in the mid-to-late 1940s were sent in by Joan Duncan Fath of her mom Betty Jane Conner and best friend Rita Clark. The girls traveled to Wildwood by train with their friends, always staying in the same Rooming House on 17th St. In those days, it was fashionable for friends to hang out at the beach all day, and go out dancing at night. Photographs are not only a reflection of people, but a reflection of fun, love and memories, as shown in these images frozen-in-time, in Wildwood by-the-sea.

Love those Wildwood Days! The Kretschmer’s since 1922 Every little cottage has a story... You may recall last year, the tale of 624 W. Glenwood Ave. that began 99 years ago and includes 3 generations of Kretschmer’s in the little town of West Wildwood, NJ. While some family's have only memories of their years spent by the sea, others are blessed to have an abundance of photographs, like the Kretschmer's. Here's another page of Fun in The Sun for them.

Robert, Cynthia, Suzanne July 2002

There are several meanings for the word love, one of which is familial or family. That word describes the relationship my family has with the Halikman family of E. 16th Ave., North Wildwood. The year 2019 marked the 25th Summer we’ve been their tenants every two weeks in July. We’ve grown close during these years, sharing happy and sad times as families do. My daughter Susan first spoke with Jim on the phone after coming across his rental ad in the Philadelphia Northeast Times. Jim was especially proud of his ceiling fans in all the rooms, except the bathroom. That was all that was needed to assure cool breezes at night. Things change. These days, air-conditioning is essential, with small seashore cottages being replaced by three and four-story condos and homes that block the sun shine and sea breezes. Our families have changed too. Toddlers are now parents, young ones have jobs, some went away to school and some have relocated. Through it all, our vacation time has become a tradition we hope continues for many more years. Looking at photos stirs many memories of things past. Everyone loved the “Whacka-Mole” A pony ride on the beach was on our list of “Things to Do.” Who could deny the kids a ride on a Monster truck? Another favorite, only briefly in service was the Beach Tram, decorated with twinkling lights you could see shining in the night as it made its way along the dunes by Kennedy Drive.

We would get on at 15th Ave., with the driver heading south on the beach to the first pier before turning towards the ocean. There were many shrieks of panic as the water came up closer. Smiling, the driver would turn north, taking us safely back to 15th Ave. One summer, the six grandkids had a lemonade stand on the corner at Surf Avenue to earn money for the ‘Boards,’ with the adults consuming a lot of lemonade that day! We were at Douglass Fudge for their 75th anniversary with Santa for Christmas in July as well as their 100th anniversary last summer. We even had a fudge-judging contest some years ago. We love Pompeo’s on the boardwalk and smelling the aroma of their marinara sauce, drawing us there for dinner after a great day on the beach. It is our tradition after packing the cars for the drive home to go there for breakfast. My parents loved the shore. They brought my brother and I here from a very young age. We sometimes went to other shore towns where relatives had homes, but Wildwood always called us back. I returned with my firstborn and two grandchildren and we all loved it, which began our “Two Weeks in July” tradition. Hopefully, there will be many more years of making memories. I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by family and friends, the more the merrier, and being surrounded by them on the beach in Wildwood is even better.

ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg True Love at Grassy Sound The Story of Jim & Sue Walter {FULL STORY IN SUMMER ‘20 ISSUE}

Jim Walter’s Grassy Sound story began in the 1940s, where his father brought him as a young boy, but he remembers stories of his grandfather coming by train from Philadelphia in the 1890s and the conductor would slow down just enough for the fishermen to jump off. Jim’s parents, Charles and Ida Walter rented in Grassy Sound for years until they bought a cottage there in 1952. Fast forward to the summer of 1958, when 15 year old Jim Walter would meet his true love at Grassy Sound. He remembers it like it was yesterday, meeting Sue Buchanan by the drawbridge where there was a little bulkhead underneath where the kids liked to hang out, and, as fate dictated, “it was love at first sight.” Sue’s family rented Jackson’s Apts., which was a few cottages away from the Walter’s home. Jim fondly recalls a long boardwalk winding its way through Grassy Sound, which he and Sue would later walk on to work at Dad’s Place for the next couple of summers. Following the summer, Sue and Jim corresponded through letter writing. They were married soon after graduating high school and shared a beautiful life together raising their family, spending summers at their shore house in Stone Harbor. They were together for 63 years, but alas not without life’s heartbreaking trials. After a long period of Alzheimer’s, Sue passed away in January ‘21. With an undying love, Jim knows, that she’s been fully restored in heaven, and the love that began under the Grassy Sound bridge one summer day, will never die. Thanks in part to their love letters and albums of treasured photos, their blissful days spent by the sea still exist and keep Jim smiling over those cherished memories, allowing him to hold those moments in time in his own hands. The sights and smells found in Grassy Sound, along with its natural beauty, all speak fondly of the sweet stories created only by the sea.

Since our first issue, I’ve loved to hail “Old House Heros” in The Sun. The story of this property once belonging to the Walter family, was featured last summer. We just want to give a shout out to current owner Lizzy for being one heck of an old house hero for preserving all of these cottages, each in their own unique style. The top 2 images are paintings I made of the cottages, and the bottom a photo I took of her super cool “She Shed”. There’s more to the story for a later time.

P.S. I sure hope it never gets torn down.

What some call the Pizza Slice Cottage, others simply call it the A House or the Triangle House. Located on Park Blvd. it was built by Glenn Dye circa 1960. According to Thomas Raniszewski, his family owned the lot and Glenn worked for Scrivanni Buick before it closed to make way for the Wawa at Pine Ave. Although the house may have been adapted as a livable dwelling as the years went on, it was never intended to be a house. Glenn Dye ordered this structure in the form of a kit and built it himself. Such simple, utilitarian structures were available and there are more “kit houses” on the island then we are aware of. (Many of the homes I’ve featured in The Sun over the years, are “kit houses”.) Glenn built this to be used as a clubhouse for his ‘bottle collector’ group of which Dye was president of the local chapter. It was a group of eccentric guys who would meet there on a monthly basis and bring their old bottles found on their digs. They would have Show & Tell and swap and even sell their bottles to each other. They also had their own quarterly newsletter that is believed to have been published from inside the A House, just a utilitarian meeting space with a few chairs and lots of old bottles. So if you ever wondered about this little red triangle house, with the help of social media working at its best, I found the story and am very happy to share it with you. ~Dorothy

WEST TOLEDO AVE. IN THE CREST

AMERICAN LEGION ON ATLANTIC AVE.

Do you remember how it smelled, wan-

dering through the stacks? The feel of a book in one’s hand as your finger glided up its supple spine? Can we forget the joy of walking into a library on a hot, summer day, into the cool, quiet sanctuary? For too many, visiting a local library was lost during the height of Coronavirus. Curbside pick-up was convenient and safe, and we are thankful for safety measures and faithful staff members. Yet, in our hearts, we missed visiting our little sanctuaries, tucked away from the outside world. We miss our book clubs, the soft chatter of voices, and the laughter of happy children. Thankfully, the joy of reading goes on! Across the Wildwoods, and Cape May County, people can still share and borrow books because of Little Free Libraries. Founded by Brandon Pederson, Little Free Library began as a movement, in 2009. The headquarters is located in Hudson, Wisconsin, and Little Free Library seeks to boost literacy and build a community around the world. A nonprofit organization, Little Free Library is made of everyday people seeking to make a difference in their neighborhood. How does a Little Free Library work? According to the website, you can find building instructions and tips and watch a tutorial video online. The structures are 22” wide x 18” deep, but you can build one that best fits your needs and expectations. All instructions and blueprints are

free from Little Free Library! The unit should be installed on a post or another solid foundation of your choice. How much does it cost? The only cost involved is a $40 payment to purchase a charter sign. Further instructions and details can be read at https://littlefreelibrary.org/build/ How does the system work? Little Free Library encourages participants to implement green building techniques and use recycled or used materials if possible. After you construct and register your own little library, fill it with whatever books you would like to “swap” out. If you use a little library, please replace what you take with another book you would like to share with others. According to Little Free Library, “73% of people say they’ve met more neighbors because of a Little Free Library.” 92% of people also feel that their neighborhood is a “friendlier place” because of these unassuming structures. How can I find a Little Free Library? So far, The Sun has found the following little treasure chests: the American Legion on Atlantic Ave., in Wildwood; Pittsburg and New Jersey Aves., and one on Toledo Ave., in Wildwood Crest. So what are you waiting for? Do you have some extra books to share and lend? Are you looking for a new adventure in your own backyard? If you said “yes,” then the joy of Little Free Library awaits you. Even as we venture back into brick-andmortar libraries, the grass-roots movement of tiny libraries may just be the answer to our pandemic blues.

Elmer T. Pinker was born in 1879 in Philadelphia and graduated Pharmacy School in 1904 before finding his way to the island, where his father was building homes in Holly Beach. Elmer settled on Pine Ave. and opened Pinker’s Pharmacy on the corner of Davis & Pacific, the island’s first drug store. His son, Elmer A. Pinker owned a home on Wildwood Ave. and passed on his love of Wildwood to his family, including granddaughter, Polly McGinnis, who shared these vintage photos with us.

78 “There is always some specific moment when we become aware that our youth is gone; but, years after, we know it was much later.”

w e C all ed it Don & ick Caton’s Boardwalk emories don s Arcade

~Mignon McLaughlin

Don Caton grew up a ‘hop, skip and a jump’ from the “boards” in a summer bungalow on the 500 E. block of 11th Ave. in the shadow of the long gone (but not forgotten) retro Galaxie Motel. His family’s cottage still proudly stands, better than ever, thanks to the true Old House Heroes they are. The once-concrete front yard now holds a lush, green lawn and a lovely canvas awning adorns their porch, making their old home like new. Having his roots proudly planted in the Wildwoods, Don owned various boardwalk businesses over the years and was an integral part in the story of what came to be known as “DON’S ARCADE.” The arcade attracted large groups of teenagers every night, who loved hanging out playing pinball and doing what teenagers do best, flirting.

Perhaps it was Don’s mom, Grace, who instilled in him the entertainment value residing in such venues. He recalls her playing SKILO at SPORTLAND for decades.

Sportland was owned by Steve and Angie Cicala, who threw a big end-of-season party every September, which is how Don and his dad, also Don, met Steve. It was the early-1970s and Don was fixing pinball machines located on the boardwalk where he got to know many of the business owners. Steve, who had a BB Gun Stand and a Water Game on Sportland, offered Don work. A new building was built on the 2100 block, with Steve renting the southernmost store and filling it with air hockey machines, which Don repaired. After a year or so, the adjoining stores became available. Steve rent-

ed them, opened a full-blown arcade and asked Don and his dad if they wanted to manage it. Don played the part of repairman and manager during the day while his dad managed the arcade at night. Interestingly, the arcade never had a name and since father and son shared the same name, people just naturally started calling it “DON’S ARCADE.” Since Steve had no involvement in the day-to-day operations, few customers knew him. All things must come to an end, and a few years later, “Don’s Arcade,” like so many other businesses before it, simply faded away. Steve apparently left the Wildwood business scene, but his wife, Angie continued to run Skilo well into her 90s. After the 2300 block was sold, Angie moved Skilo to a store under the 1900 Condos, which ultimately closed due to her poor health. Don’s mom, Grace Caton, true player that she was, played Skilo until the very end, enjoying part of Wildwood’s boardwalk history. Now in her 90s, she still enjoys her summer home with sons Don and Rick, her daughters in law Sharon and Chris and grandchildren.

One year it was Don’s Ice Cream Shop

Then it was Don’s French Fried Potatoes

A Wild Tree in the Wildwoods The sweetest stories are born somewhere between the serendipity of The Sun and the power of social media. This one is about a tree that has always captivated me and symbolized the “wild” in Wildwood as I imagined the entire island once covered with such twisted trees. It stands watch over the corner of 2nd & Delware Aves. One night after a sunset that could not be ignored, I posted this photo I took of the gnarly tree. Several locals commented including Sharon, Boz, Kevin, which led to a comment from Linda Breitinger whose mother owned the property forever, up until 2 years ago. This is what she wrote. . .

“HELP” premiered at Hunt’s Shore Theater the summer of 1965

[Part II, continued from previous issue] With summer finally here, and a new crop of destined-to-be-great films on our cinematic sphere, what better time for a (follow-up) trip down memory lane (no tram car required), where Summer Blockbusters live on? Picking up where we left off on our Classic Movie Town Tour…

Wildwood, 1969 ~ Lisa Lauriello Bukowski was only 14 in the summer of ‘69 and was too young to go to Yasgar’s Farm with her brother Ben to the Woodstock Festival. But like many others, she grew up being a part of its music and culture. She purchased her Woodstock poster of course, on the Wildwood Boardwalk. The movie ran at the Regent the following summer.

Music continued to fill the starry stage with the release of the documentary film Woodstock in 1970, which was based on the life-altering Woodstock Festival from the previous year, when more than half a million people landed on a small farm in upstate New York to celebrate peace, love and music. Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark found us in 1981, offering archeology, artifacts and adventure all from the comfort of our theater seats. Not your average “aliens gone wild” film, ET ET: The Extra-Terrestrial visited earth in 1982 only to be quickly abandoned by his outer space family. Before we could feel too sorry for him, he found a friend in a troubled young boy and then his siblings, who helped the lovable extra-terrestrial find his way home.

A Hard Day’s Night’ at the Shore Theater in Wildwood, during the summer of 1964.

The Beatles Hard Day’s Night hit the movie stage in the summer of ’64, featuring a crazy day in the life of the musical Fab Four before a televised concert. Followed by… The Beatles lighthearted HELP in ’65, filmed with a much-bigger budget, and in color, in a variety of exotic locations with music, naturally, as the ultimate star.

We would be remiss in ending our cinematic sightseeing tour without a nod to Pirates of the Caribbean and its fellow chartbusting sequels. While not all that nostalgia inspiring, having begun not so way back in 2003, they did, however, offer loads of swashbuckler fun while inspiring Morey’s Piers Pirates of the Wildwoods (entertainment sans Johnny Depp sighting). Our nostalgia-loving hearts are ready for the Summer of 2021! We’ve got our beach bags packed and our movie wish list complete (movie-style popcorn optional but encouraged) and wish all of you your very own sequel-worthy summer by the sea...

I have so many fond memories of my mom, Mary Yacabell and our Wildwood Days. I took this picture of her in 1969 at our home on 201 CENTRAL AVE. in North Wildwood on our second floor wraparound porch, holding her precious Chihuahua named Hercules. She loved sitting on this beautiful spacious porch with the splendid view of the Hereford Inlet and Lighthouse. Directly across the street was Anna Maria’s Spaghetti House, with the United Methodist Church caddy corner. Next to that was Officer Heintzman‘s home and on the corner was Frank and Regina McAnany’s Grocery Store. Along with the perfect view, my mom also loved her white wrought iron tea set table and chairs, perfect for entertaining family, friends, renters and vacationers at her “Happy Place,” while soaking up the lovely ocean breezes. Making it even happier, dad painted the porch ceiling tiles various colors of the rainbow just for her! My dad worked at National Vulcanized Fiber in Wilmington, DE and would take the bus to North Wildwood on Friday nights, where he would find us waiting for him out on the porch, naturally, playing cards or bingo, drinking orange soda and eating popcorn. Oftentimes, we were waiting until after midnight for him to arrive! Life was so simple then! We lived in bare feet and our bathing suits. Our day would often start with my mom taking us driftwood hunting, where we discovered some beautiful pieces of natural driftwood we would use as lawn decorations. Then she made us delicious breakfast omelettes. Following chores, we were off to the beach for some fresh salt air, exercise, swimming, lots of vitamin D & SEA and a lifetime of happy memories of our summers spent in North Wildwood during the 50’s and 60’s.

I read your last issue front to back several times. The stories and pics are so much fun to read. You do the most amazing job of connecting yesterday and today. Thank you. Cricket, 2020 You always manage to pull it all together to make it the best!!! Always so interesting and so informative, great advertising too:-) We are sitting on a bench by the water on 3rd Ave and we are both immersed by the content. Continue to be well and looking up. You are a true Wildwood inspiration. Take care. Ed & Wendy, 2020 I am holding the new issue of The Sun in my hands and I am feeling the love and WARMTH emmanating from its pages! Now that the planning. the organizing, the writing, the deliveries (and all else) are completed, I hope you have the time to sit back and bask in your own sunshine. Al, 2020 Many thanks for your new issue... It is chock full of wonderful memorabilia, great poignant stories and such a tribute to the town we love! Susan F., 2020

The Oatmeal Club, with oatmeal being synonymous with morning, meets every summer Saturday morning at 3rd & JFK between 8am and 9am (before the parking meters kick in). The men’s group gather to laugh and talk about anything and everything (excluding politics) and often ‘nothing at all.’ With cell phones prohibited, the free social gathering is a throwback to simpler times, an old-school get together where new members are always welcomed. The only requirements are a quick smile and a friendly attitude. Are you ready to be Oatmeal Strong? Follow them on Facebook or stop by in person! In the center behind the banner, is Oatmeal Club Founder John Stearn, names not in order are Joe Bamberski, Bill Briar, Sean Dillon, Dee Hoffman, Joe Marunyak, Tom Marunyak, John McCann , Robert McMonagle, Ed Milillo, Joe Murphy, Dan Orlando, Mike Sothern and Jim Williams Editor Note: What do you say we girls start a chapter and call it the Granola Girls Club?
