Installed with backlighting, they add interesting colour.” He also mentions “rule-breaking” and explains that clients are letting their eccentricity shine through their spaces. “We are seeing bolder colours and material choices.”

RETRO REVIVAL

When it comes to materials, Fazlin Oosthuizen, head designer at Blend Africa, mentions metals, reeded glass, Georgian wire and other glass textures, and laminated marble boards as options to consider. “Reminiscent of the ’70s, these materials are making a huge comeback in elevated form and function.” He also adds that large windows and light-filled spaces with fewer cabinets on walls are all the rage currently.

The design team at blu_line indicates that an interactive kitchen is one to keep in mind. “The kitchen must be able to interact, adapt and awaken the user’s senses. It must offer a place to rest while also being a place to work alongside all the functions. The kitchen must also interact seamlessly with the architectural elements but must be a statement on its own.”

It is difficult to choose one element. Adequate storage and ample counter space are very important, but proper lighting is essential for a well-functioning kitchen. How do you go about achieving a timeless kitchen design?

Shaker-style or modern flat panel doors with clean lines work well with a neutral colour palette that includes shades of white and grey or natural wood tones. These colours provide a clean and timeless design and give you the opportunity to add a pop of colour to your splashback, wall or décor that can be changed easily as trends evolve.

Lauren Beer, marketing manager at Vortex Sanitaryware, says it’s best to choose your finish based on the other finishes in your space, such as vanity handles, light fixtures and other accents.

Says Beer: “The style of the mixer or tap that you choose should match the overall design of your space. Similarly, the size of a basin or sink will determine the size of the mixer needed. Consider what features you need in a mixer, such as a pull-out nozzle and water-saving aerators. Mixers that are strongly constructed from durable materials and have a solid warranty will last for years.

On finishes, Beer says the allure of matt finishes has taken the design world by storm and bathroom fixtures have become the perfect canvas for this trend. Matt black, brushed brass and brushed stainless steel have gained popularity and will infuse bathrooms with a touch of refined opulence. Ultimately, however, it’s a matter of preference, as every finish can add a unique touch to the bathroom.

“The classic chrome finish is timeless and matches well with almost any style. It’s also very durable and easy to clean, so will remain a popular choice,” Beer comments.

SANITARY MODULES

Martin Mpukani, marketing manager at Euro Bath & Tile, says sanitary modules used in showers have emerged as a transformative trend in bathroom design, offering a seamless and efficient solution for creating stunning shower spaces.

“These modules typically include features such as showerheads, taps, controls and storage options, all seamlessly integrated into a single structure. This streamlined approach not only enhances the overall aesthetics of the shower area, but also optimises space utilisation, particularly in smaller bathrooms,” he says.

WATER CONSCIOUSNESS

In light of recent severe water shortages in some parts of the country, the bathroom industry has responded with an array of eco-friendly options. Water-saving showerheads and mixers equipped with flow restrictors help conserve precious resources without compromising functionality.

MELANIE FARRELL DISCOVERS WATER-RESISTANT BATHROOM FLOORING OPTIONS

Whether it’s steam, spray or – in the case of a wet room – water splashing directly on the floor, bathrooms get wet.

Shannon Tchetchik, marketing manager at FINfloor, recommends vinyl flooring in bathrooms. “Vinyl is highly resistant to water, making it suitable for bathrooms where it can withstand exposure to surface water without warping or getting damaged,” she says.

“Bathrooms often get a lot of foot traffic, and the flooring needs to withstand wear and tear. Water-resistant laminate flooring can also be a suitable choice for bathrooms,” adds Tchetchik. Laminate flooring ranges from FINFloor, such as Black Forest and Inovar, have a wax-impregnated core and waxed edges and a very low swell rate.

VINYL FLOOR TIP

Select vinyl flooring specifically designed for wet areas as it will have enhanced water-resistant properties, advises Tchetchik. Proper installation is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of the vinyl flooring in your bathroom.

ON THE TILES

Amadea Oberholzer, sales consultant and designer at Lifestyle Ceramics, is a fan of tiles for bathroom floors. “I’d always recommend tiles,” Oberholzer says. “With a quality tile and a good tiler, you can put them in and just enjoy them. Tiles don’t require yearly maintenance as they don’t need reglazing, and they are very easy to clean.”

Neutral colour palettes with interesting patterns and finishes that are easy on the eye are trending in bathroom flooring, she advises.

SHOWER FLOOR TIP

When it comes to tiling shower floors, Oberholzer recommends using a large-format tile with an envelope cut. “Ask your tiler. It is a more modern option than small tiles,” she says.

BOLD BATHROOM
