Your safety, our priority

W

ith your health and safety our priority, all our guests are asked to maintain social distancing, sanitise or wash their hands regularly, and to wear their face masks properly, covering both nose and mouth, throughout the flight. It is understood that masks will be lowered when drinking water. Comair’s B737 aircraft are fitted with a Hepper filter that purifies the air as it passes through the airconditioning unit. These filters are of a similar type to those used in operating theatres – they purify the air by extracting micro-organisms. Our filters are replaced regularly. All Comair staff are temperature tested and are required to complete a health questionnaire when reporting for work each day. Staff exhibiting any flu-like symptoms are sent home; if symptoms persist, they undergo a Covid-19 test. At work, all staff are required to wear face masks, sanitise and/or wash their hands frequently, and maintain proper social distancing protocols. Comair has recommended that all staff receive the Covid-19 vaccine. Passengers should report any non-adherence to the Covid-19 prevention protocols to a cabin attendant. Stay safe and travel mindfully.

Fear is the mindkiller Forget Jeff Bezos’s ego-trip into space – what serious sci-fi fans have been looking forward to more than anything is the new film version of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. With gigantic sandworms and all manner of malevolent forces and interplanetary scheming happening, it promises to be a big-screen event for our time. In cinemas from 22 October. numetro.co.za

The pandemic has meant an extra-long wait for the latest Bond extravaganza – No Time to Die (said to be Daniel Craig’s last turn as 007) has been on hold for 18 months. Along with all the usual surprises – locations, foxy damsels, ingenious contraptions made by Q – this instalment has a super-villain with a secret identity. Flying high

There’s something wondrous and meditative about kite-flying; it could be seen as a perfect metaphor for escape, for rising above challenges, and graciously integrating science with fantasy. The 27th iteration of the Cape Town International Kite Festival is a hybrid event, with online activities to help raise R100 000 for Cape Mental Health. It’s happening online from 2 to 31 October; at Dolphin Beach on 10 October; and at Zandvlei Nature Reserve on 23 October. facebook.com/CTKiteFest

Snake eyes

This month sees the opening of fashion designer Rich Mnisi’s first solo gallery exhibition at Cape Town’s Southern Guild. A departure from his wearable designs, Nyoka features collectible furniture – as eyecatching as any clothing he’s created. Inspiration draws on Mnisi’s family history and on African mythology – he plays with the duality of fear and beauty epitomised by the image of a snake, which – in Xitsonga – is nyoka. The show runs from 2 October until 4 February. southernguild.co.za

OUTDOOR TREATS / Joburg

EXPERIENCE

Take it outside

Our Halloween-inspired guide to drinking and dining spots where you can avoid everyone’s number one phobia right now: crowded indoor spaces

Feed your fears As summer rolls around, be thankful that Mzansi’s blessed with many gorgeous outdoor venues – for drinking and dining. We have views galore – plus that high-altitude buzz to accompany the fresh air and feeling of lording it over all you survey. And keep in mind that, if you’re agoraphobic, or simply don't like wide-open spaces, there’s usually a table inside for you, too. kulula.com

Scale to scary heights

Africa’s highest city bar has arrived. Alto234 graces the very top of Joburg’s tallest building, The Leonardo, and everything you need to know is in the name: Altitudo is Latin for height, and 234 is the number of metres above the ground – you’ll be on the 57th floor of a very tall skyscraper when you order a bottle of bubbly or pop a token into the Moët vending machine which dispenses 200ml bottles of Moët & Chandon. There’s plenty besides champers to sip on, plus swaggy food from oysters with caviar to langoustine with pork belly. And snacks such as wagyu biltong – even the cashew nuts are truffled. alto234.co.za OCTOBER 2021

Way down south

Don't let your fear of hippies get you down. At the transformed Glencairn Hotel, the vibe at Deep South Eatery is decidedly all-embracing. Everyone (and their children) is welcome, and there are large areas – on the grass out back and on the terrace out front – on which to sit and imbibe the near-the-ocean setting. With families in mind, food ranges from wood-fired pizzas and sushi to tacos and vegan specialities, and there’s not only a wellstocked bar but an excellent liquor store downstairs. Plus jungle gyms and safe play areas. deepsoutheatery.co.za

Pastel panic

We don’t know if persicophobia – a fear of the colour peach – is a legit condition, but one place to deal with this niche phobia is Peachy, a cute eatingand-drinking-andsocialising venue at Joburg’s 44 Stanley. Food’s contemporary and the cocktails are, well, just peachy. As is the décor with its Murano chandeliers and candy-stripe bar. peachy.co.za 12

Dog-friendly, kind to workers in need of Wi-Fi, and oozing Gallic charm, Arbour Café in Illovo’s Birdhaven Shopping Centre is enchanting. Plus, they do lazy weekend brunches with bottomless L’Ormarins Cap Classique. arbourcafe.co.za

Safe harbour

If you’re hydrophobic or have an irrational fear of boats, you might need to sit with your back to the shimmering views at 9th Avenue Waterside. This bistro-style outpost of one of Durban’s finest restaurants is at the Yacht Mole and the outdoor deck takes every advantage of the sunshine, bobbing boats, seagulls and a sense of wide-open space. Plus the fine gastronomic fare from chef Wesley Aucamp and his team. 9thavewaterside.co.za

The perfect date

A hop, skip and a jump from the centre of Cape Town and you’re in the Constantia countryside, where Steenberg is among the country’s oldest wine estates. Its outdoor seating is perfect for tranquil afternoons soaking up the summer sun. steenbergfarm.com kulula.com

At the top of Bothmaskloof in Riebeek Kasteel, Eight Feet Village is a project of four brothers (hence the name – the number of feet between them). It’s a place to drink their Eight Feet Coffee, tuck into pizzas and steak from their self-service restaurant, shop for olives and wine, and settle in for a bit as you absorb the views across the olive groves and vineyards from the wooden deck that extends from the renovated container buildings. eightfeet.co.za

Obsession

Scared stiff

She’s not afraid to stand in front of an audience and tell jokes, but Kate Pinchuck says travelling with her can be a nightmare

I am scared of forgetting anything important when I go travelling, or something going wrong, or losing something. I am incredibly high maintenance, so there are a lot of items that go into maintaining my base line of functionality. If any one of those were to be misplaced, I might lose my mind. I am also, because of my Jewish mother, always very anxious about being the wrong temperature. The idea of being too hot or too cold is very stressful to me, so I can usually be found lugging around an extra jacket and a change of clothes, no matter where I am or what the season is. I pack for a trip like I am planning to change outfits three times a day, just in case.

I was heartbroken when Jewel Tavern, an incredible Chinese restaurant at the docks, closed. Fortunately the owners now have a takeaway-only joint in the city: Monks Chinese. Everything on the menu is delicious, but if it has the words ‘Crispy Ginger’ in it, it will probably change your life.

Food for daze

Home sweet home When in Cape Town, Kate says, you might as well fuel up somewhere special

Park off

There’s a coffee shop in De Waal Park and I am obsessed with it. I can’t have a dog because I am irresponsible, so I go there to drink amazing cappuccino, eat pasteis de nata and watch whippets and great Danes frolic about. It’s the best. The only scary thing that has ever happened was when someone asked me which dog was mine. ‘None,’ I said. ‘I just like to watch.’ 24

High anxiety

Interview: Keith Bain, Pictures: Sven Kristian, Supplied

One year, my entire Jewish family decided to do the Tsitsikamma forest canopy tour. We thought it might cure us of our collective anxieties. For a moment, it did. We all got harnessed up and attached to a wire rope and we did the foefie slide across the roof of the forest. Even my mother was overcome by a spurt of bravery. We were so cured, we even booked a bungee jump. Of course, once we came down from our foefieslide high, we cancelled that.

Freaky trips Is there anywhere at all that Kate feels safe?

Bat girl

In primary school they tried to make me do the ‘adventure’ section of the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn. I’m claustrophobic, so while I was happy to be in the enormous entrance cave, the idea of going any further was terrifying. I have no desire to try and squeeze through something named ‘The Letterbox’. I think I crawled backwards through a stalagmite.

No show ghost

Last year my boyfriend and I took a road trip up the R62, and stopped in Uniondale for a pie and in hopes of seeing the phantom hitchhiker who supposedly haunts that stretch of road. We saw no spook at all. I think the ghost probably saw my bag full of anti-anxieties, courtesy of 2020, and decided to leave us in peace.

LEG STRETCHER / Cape Town Marathon

The main event

This is how we do it

Cape Town is en route to becoming host of the 7th Abbott World Marathon Majors event

kulula.com

EXPLORE

W

hen the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon sets off on 17 October, all those thousands of pairs of legs hotfooting it through and across one of the world’s most beguiling cities will be striding towards a new destiny for the event – and for the Mother City. Extra eyes will be on the race as it has been selected to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) family – it’s the first marathon in Africa to be nominated as a candidate for this prestigious accolade. According to Francois Pienaar, chairman of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, becoming a candidate is a tremendous honour. ‘Considering that we don’t have any major international sporting events in any discipline in Africa, achieving this status would be a tremendous boost for the city, country and continent. Africa is home to the best marathon runners in the world and we hope they will get the

opportunity to run a Major on home turf in the coming years.’ Sanlam, the race’s main sponsor, is attached to the event for the eighth year; it views accession to the Majors as a chance to boost the continent and its athletes. ‘Our purpose is to help people across Africa live with confidence and this race is the perfect way to foster the growth of Africa’s economy, and to showcase our people’s unparalleled potential,’ says Sanlam brand executive, Sydney Mbhele. Although race entries closed in September, excitement is already growing for next year’s race, and runners who are staying at home in 2021 are encouraged to start preparing for what is set to be a huge year for the event – according to Cape Town mayor, Dan Plato, the marathon’s evaluation years will see an annual influx of

around 10 000 international runners and supporters to the city. What’s significant, too, is that this is to be the first large-scale participating event since the start of the pandemic in South Africa. The emotions are set to be high. And there’s much at stake. Organisers are taking no chances, and the health and safety of everyone involved is a priority. A thorough plan to reduce the chances of transmission has been implemented, and the race is likely to be a key indicator of the way forward for events of this nature. Pienaar noted that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon already meets the majority of requirements set by the AbbottWMM, and that enhancements continue to be made to the race. ‘We are pulling out all the stops to achieve these goals, and are excited to receive the support from our runners, spectators, sponsors and the city to make this dream a reality.’ capetownmarathon.com

Run safe

Of course, being doublevaccinated well ahead of race day is the ultimate precaution, but there are further measures to provide additional peace of mind for all participants. Everyone involved – crew and runners – will undertake a compulsory COVID-19 antigen test 48 hours prior to the start. Testing is free of charge. Runners will be contacted to pre-book a testing time slot. Testing happens at Cape Town Stadium before entering the expo space for race number collection. Antigen test results will be available within 15 minutes. Organisers have also implemented a staggered start so that runners will set off in batches of 300 and start in oneminute intervals (seeding will be based on previous results), and cutting edge timing technology will calculate mat-to-mat finishing times – not gun-to-mat – and results will be calculated accordingly, so don’t fret. Staggered starts begin at 6:15am. And, since not everyone is yet ready for mass gatherings, there is also a 21km virtual race – in addition to the 5km and 10km virtual races. kulula.com

Urban oasis

Endless space

A new Winelands idyll

Golf, wine-tasting, hiking trails across the Klein Drakenstein mountains… Paarl has plenty going for it, including Brookdale Estate, a rejuvenated wine farm that recently launched its villa as a private getaway for 12 people to share. Apart from being able to explore the 67-hectare estate, you can sample the winemaking talents of Kiara Scott who is being hailed as a prodigy. The manor house is built in the modern Cape Dutch style with five bedrooms and loads of different living spaces – and there’s a sixth en-suite bedroom in the adjacent building. There’s a full-on kitchen in which to operate if you’re self-catering (you can also opt to have all meals catered); outside, a magnificent pool will take the edge off those piping-hot Paarl summer days. brookdale-estate.com

With a dearth of interenational travellers, many of Cape Town’s secret spaces are waiting to be discovered. Dock House is a handsome boutique hotel occupying what was once the harbour master’s residence. The heritage building has been transformed into an intimate bolthole with just six individually designed neo-baroque bedrooms – it’s so discreetly situated, hardly anyone knows of its existence. Overlooking the V&A, it is a great base for exploring the Waterfront and neighbouring Green Point on foot.

Join the solution revolution

SA Harvest’s mission is to end hunger and address malnutrition. The team is focused on making sure that they provide nourishment through vitamin- and nutrientrich ingredients and nutritionally balanced meals. The organisation has already delivered over six million nutritious meals to people in need – they’ve achieved this by rescuing food that would otherwise have gone to waste. Alan Browde, founder and CEO of SA Harvest, says this is just the beginning. ‘In South Africa, almost 20 million people go to sleep hungry every night. To solve such a huge problem, we’re going to need the partnership of all South Africans.’ You can contribute right now, using the QR code below.

e might be travelling again and restaurants are open, but the hunger epidemic continues across South Africa. Frighteningly, some 10 million tons of food goes to waste every year. SA Harvest is an innovative organisation that intervenes by ‘rescuing’ food waste and redirecting it to people in need. To help with this phenomenal work, Mzansi restaurant group tashas has partnered with SA Harvest to help raise money for its operations. Until the end of October, 44

Parallel realities

From Penguin Random House, Ancestral is the action-packed third book from Charlie Human. Latter-day warrior Clementine Khoza enters a post-apocalyptic suburban wasteland to try and save her kidnapped son from a horrible fate. Whether what follows is within the realm of the rational is not the point. Human takes you on one heck of a journey – it feels as though you’re in a video game, in fact, ceaselessly faced with a new swath of enemies to battle or bewildering ideas to process. It has ancestors flickering in and out of reality, an adorable dog, a giant insect-like monster, and many kooky scenes immersing you in the ceaseless mayhem. 46

Other worlds

From French-Moroccan author Leïla Slimani, The Country of Others is a fast-paced and yet intimate account of a woman who is transplanted from her native France to northern Africa, where she is immersed in an alien culture and must deal with all its strangeness and wonder. Paramount, too, is her treatment by her husband, a Moroccan soldier who fought for France during World War Two, who initially sweeps her off her feet, but then slips into a near-ambivalent attitude towards her. It’s powerful, deeply personal (with elements drawn from Slimani’s own family history and stories told by her grandmother and from the memories of her mother), and often riveting.

A continuum Anthony Doerr won the Pulitzer Prize for his last novel, All the Light We Cannot See, and now, as they say, it’s time for something completely different. Cloud Cuckoo Land is a fat book that really mixes it up, weaving together a multi-dimensional, multiple time period tale that takes readers from 15th-century Constantinople, to present-day Idaho, and into the future, where the setting is a spaceship. It’s about children on the brink of adulthood and worlds on the brink of collapse – time and place are interconnected, and so are different species and each of us with the rest of humanity. It’s published by 4th Estate. kulula.com

BOOKS / John Boyne, Michael Pollen

All woke up

Plant-based highs

John Boyne’s claws are out

I

Words: Keith Bain, Pictures: Rich Gilligan, Supplied

n 2019, John Boyne wrote a novel for younger readers called My Brother’s Name is Jessica. By all accounts it’s a sensitive, sympathetic tale about a 12-year-old boy whose older brother is transitioning into a girl. Nevertheless, it provoked fierce social media vitriol – he was accused, among other things, of misgendering and of appropriation. Yet, most of the hostility (some of it violent) came from people who hadn’t even read his novel. Rather than back down, Boyne penned The Echo Chamber, a laugh-out-loud satire of contemporary society’s crazed obsession with online screaming matches – in it, he takes aim at cancel culture, at the erasure of history, and at more mindless aspects of wokeness. Primarily, though, it’s an entertaining critique of the ways in

DISCOVER

which social media has removed personal responsibility – how today’s rabblerousers hide behind their anonymous online identities, claiming to take offence at everything. Usually, he suggests, being offended and outraged is a form of attention-seeking or self-gratification. The story is a comic page-turner. A super-privileged family, each member of which is having some sort of melt-down or extreme experience, become caught up in a web of intrigue spun by nothing other than a few poorly-worded tweets. It should remind us all to stop taking too seriously every online post generated by some stranger hiding behind a social media account and its air of authority. Although, if you’re uptight about any of these issues or take social media very seriously, you might just be offended by it.

Michael Pollen’s meandering investigative style always takes readers on a quirky, intriguing journey. In his latest book, This Is Your Mind on Plants, he takes a look at what the psychotropic chemicals found in certain plants do to humans. He doesn’t only investigate the neurological and physiological effects of caffeine, opium and mescaline, however, but also the wider and deeper ramifications of our relationships with these producers of chemicals that alter the way in which the mind functions. In his chapter on opium, for example, he makes profound connections between the war on drugs and Richard Nixon’s plan to demonise minorities and cast anti-Vietnam hippies in a negative light; in the section on caffeine, he determines that the only way to reflect on the real impact of the world’s most common drug is to stop drinking tea and coffee. In the section on mescaline, he delves into cultural appropriation in the context of peyote being used by so-called spiritual tourists. A book filled with fresh insights and robust, highly personal journalism.

John Boyne is prolific. The Irish author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is known for his ability to stir deep emotions, but as his latest novel proves, he has a penchant for wicked humour and scathing social satire, too. The Echo Chamber is his 13th novel and is published by Random House. kulula.com
