WHY STUDY IN THE UK? Thousands of students come to study in the UK every year, and it’s not hard to see why – a British university qualification is universally known and highly respected around the world. University teaching is tightly regulated and developed from new research, which means you’ll develop academic knowledge of the very highest quality. The British higher education system encourages students to develop analytical skills, independent thinking and self-discipline.

This creates a fantastically diverse student population, and means that you’ll be studying alongside – and perhaps making lifelong friends with – students from over 100 countries around the world. Our reach goes well beyond the North East of England: as well as our two campuses in Sunderland, we also have up to 2,000 students studying at our London facility next to the iconic Canary Wharf, and 1,077 at our campus in Central, Hong Kong. 6,695 students study our courses in their own countries, as part of transnational partnership. We believe that a university education is about much more than just gaining a qualification: we believe it’s about encouraging you to challenge yourself, develop yourself and build up the qualifications, knowledge, experience and attitude you need to land the career you want when you graduate.

Living in university accommodation is convenient, safe, cost-effective and a great way to make new friends. All of our accommodation is covered by 24/7 CCTV security cameras for your safety. Living in Sunderland is great value for money, and the cost of our accommodation includes heating, lighting, internet and personal possessions insurance. There is a free campus bus service which links all accommodation sites to both campuses, and a bedding pack (if required) is available from your accommodation reception on arrival which includes a pillow, pillowcase, duvet, duvet cover and bed sheet. Our accommodation is self-catered, and you will have a fully furnished private single bedroom, and access to a shared kitchen, social areas, and on-site laundry facilities. Cooking for yourself is all part of the fun of living at university, but you also have a lot of meal options within the University and the city. multicultural city, and it has a huge range of restaurants and speciality supermarkets. International students tell us that they want to make friends with UK students and experience UK life and culture, so we don’t have separate accommodation for international students – instead, you’ll have exactly the same experience as UK students. If you would like to live with friends, we can arrange single culture accommodation on request. However, this will depend on availability. You can choose to live in a mixed gender, all-female or all-male flat. We are able to provide accommodation that has technology to support students who are deaf or hearing impaired, and we have rooms, kitchens and bathrooms which are easily accessible for students with physical and mobility impairments. We can also help if you have any other requirements such as agreeing to supply your own personal fridge for storing medication. To ensure that this support is available we would suggest you make your requirements known on your accommodation application as soon as possible. Accommodation is available throughout the year, including during holiday times. Our Students’ Union runs a society called Connect, which organises events and activities during quieter times at the University so there will always be friendly students and staff around.

SUNDERLAND
AND THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND Sunderland has everything you would expect from a major city: history, culture, arts and sport, with the added benefit of being a city by the sea in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. Our people are also famous for being among the friendliest in the country. Our city
Theatre and music
Sunderland is a city with a warm heart and a great quality of life. Set on the North East coast at the mouth of the River Wear, Sunderland has a rich heritage. There’s estimated to be around £1.5bn being invested over the next few years in Sunderland’s regeneration work, with infrastructure improvements including a new cable-stayed bridge over the Wear, investment in spaces for culture and performances, older buildings being redeveloped for modern uses and new office, hotel and retail developments in the city centre - the future is looking bright.
If you’re a fan of musical theatre and West End shows, then head to the Sunderland Empire – one of the largest theatres in the North East – and if live music is more your thing there’s a vibrant scene in the city centre’s independent bars and pubs.
Sunderland’s 7th century St Peter’s Church was the residence of Anglo-Saxon saint the Venerable Bede, and the Church was also where the earliest surviving complete Latin version of the Bible – the Codex Amiatinus – was written in the early 8th century; the surviving copy is preserved in the Laurentian Library in Florence.
Arts and culture Sunderland has a world of culture for you to discover. Good places to start are the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, home to over 2,000 tropical plants and flowers; National Glass Centre, the only UK centre celebrating the history of glassmaking and providing a world focus for glass; and the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, a place to experience exciting and cuttingedge new art. And Sunderland’s cultural attractions have a great future too: new developments across the city include the renovation of the old Fire Station into a performance space and the regeneration of the new Music, Arts and Culture Quarter and significant heritage sites like Hylton Castle and Roker Pier are being regenerated. Now is Sunderland’s time to stake a claim and the city has submitted a first-stage bid to be UK City of Culture in 2021.
Sport The North East is passionate about sport and at the heart of it is The Stadium of Light – the magnificent home of Sunderland AFC, known locally by its loyal supporters as the ‘Black Cats’. During football season you can watch a match there or take a tour with one of the knowledgeable guides all year round. As you would expect being on the coast we have top class water facilities at the Sunderland Marina and The Marine Activities Centre and there are excellent swimming facilities around the city, including Sunderland Aquatic Centre which boasts the only 50m pool between Leeds and Edinburgh.
Outdoor events Every year the city proudly hosts the Sunderland International Airshow, the largest free airshow in Europe. Up to one million people from across UK flock to Sunderland’s coastline between Seaburn and Roker to see a glorious display of plane acrobatics, including the RAF Red Arrows, one of the world’s best aerobatic display teams. And in 2018 Sunderland will host the prestigious Tall Ships Races, a European maritime extravaganza. Once famed for its shipbuilding prowess, the city is gearing up to welcome ships to the Wear again.

THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND The North East of England has one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the UK, with striking coastlines, ancient forests and rolling hills.
Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside
A third of the North East is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty or a National Park, and there are nine forests and over 50 castles and Roman forts – in fact the North East has more castles than any other English region. The region also has a rich culture and heritage, with 65 museums and art galleries, and worldfamous heritage sites Hadrian’s Wall, Lindisfarne on Holy Island, and Durham Cathedral.
Hadrian’s Wall
Yorkshire – and all are easily accessible by train or car. Whichever direction you take there will be something incredible to fill your day. Travelling from Sunderland to many major cities is easy. Taking the train to London takes just 3.5 hours, historic York is 1.5 hours away and you can reach Edinburgh in Scotland in 2 hours.
Durham Cathedral
The time you spend at the University of Sunderland will just about be enough to see the highlights of this wonderful region. One day you could be listening to the Northern Sinfonia at Sage Gateshead, the next you could be exploring the unspoilt beaches of Northumberland. And getting around couldn’t be easier; Sunderland is ideally placed to enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling, walking or climbing in Northumberland, the Lake District and North

“I knew I wanted to study a tourism related degree, and so I researched universities online. “I found that Sunderland performed really well in this subject in the university league tables, and living in the north east very much appealed to me. “I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy a varied placement year at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel as part of my course, gaining valuable experience in a number of different roles throughout my placement. I’ve been able to apply theoretical knowledge to a real working environment and develop my skills in communication, time management and teamwork. “My family encouraged me to study abroad and experience a different education system to further my future career, and I’m glad they did. Experiencing new cultures and foods, and making friends from all over the world really excites me, and it’s great to learn and exchange experiences and ideas with new people. I have joined forces with another animator – a fellow graduate from the University of Sunderland – to start our own animation studio together, also with the support of the Enterprise Place. It is extremely challenging, but it just makes it that much more rewarding when things go right. Any mistakes fall on you, but so do all the victories!”

“I always knew I wanted go to another country. I come from Watertown, South Dakota, a fairly small town in a small state. I felt like experiencing another culture and being on my own so far away from home was something I needed to do to grow and really put myself to the test. “At my home university, I study Studio Arts with an emphasis in animation. However, I wanted one solid year where I could focus on just animation, which led me to Sunderland. I believe I gained a better sense of professionalism. I was able to make contacts in my field, and in general expand my knowledge on how to make it in the working world. “Studying in another country was truly amazing. Everything here is so different, but in the end the people are the same all over the world. “You should take part in Study Abroad, even if it scares you a little, because it’s that slight fear that will change your life and make your adventure that much more exciting. I can’t tell you what exactly you will experience, that part is up to you, but I can say no matter where you go or how long you stay there, experiencing that culture is worth it.”

LEVELS OF STUDY Undergraduate Degrees A full-time degree that leads to a qualification such as BA, BSc or BEng usually takes three years to complete, if you take a placement it will take four years. The MPharm also takes four years to complete. If you want more flexibility to your degree and can’t decide which course to study, you can combine two different subjects in one degree. A Combined Subjects degree is considered just as rigorous as a single subject degree, and some employers especially value the extra flexibility and breadth that a Combined Subjects degree offers.
Postgraduate Degrees Taught Masters programmes usually take a year to complete if studied full-time, and are advanced level qualifications which are normally only studied after an undergraduate honours degree. Masters programmes lead to an award such as an MA, MSc or MBA, with typical interim awards of a Postgraduate Certificate and a Postgraduate Diploma,
and are usually made up of taught modules (lectures, seminars, practical work etc.), with a significant supervised project or dissertation at the last (Masters) stage of the award.
Postgraduate Research Degrees The University of Sunderland offers Research degrees for postgraduate study. Our research has been classified as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ in ten academic areas, by the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF). Research degrees are the highest level of degree awarded by UK universities. If you want to research an area of interest, and make an original contribution to existing knowledge, then a research degree provides the ideal framework to pursue your research aims. All of our research programmes are designed to develop a deeper understanding through original investigation and to generate new knowledge. Each degree is unique as it is built around your personal research on a topic of your choice. We offer the following research degree programmes: •
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
•
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
•
Professional Doctorate (DProf) focuses on work-based projects
•
PhD by Existing Published or Creative Work. This route is open to academics whose articles have been published
•
Higher Doctorate – Doctor of Science (DSc), Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Technology (DTech) and Doctor of Laws (LLD) are for people who are leading authorities in their field of study
You will work closely with a supervisory team who will advise and support you throughout your study. We welcome applications from students with a wide variety of backgrounds. Go to: www.sunderland.ac.uk/research/

STUDENT ExPERIENCE We asked our students to share their experiences of studying at the University of Sunderland.
“I have enjoyed the very practical approach to learning. After each lecture we had the chance to practice what we had just been taught, a more pleasurable and effective way of learning. The curriculum is continuously evolving to match the latest developments in the field and skills employers want. “At first I was a bit self-conscious about my English, but realised that fellow students were going through the same thing – it was a relief to know I wasn’t the only one. The University is a very friendly and warm environment which makes you feel welcomed right away and they encourage students to meet, socialise and have fun. “I did a placement year with Clicksco as a Junior Software Developer which greatly improved my technical and social skills. I gained experience that will give me an edge when applying for future jobs. “After graduation I have been offered a position at Unified Software working on improving and adding features to their existing products. At some point in the future I’d like to study a Masters part-time.”
Raul Feresteanu, from Romania, BSc (Hons) Computer Science

“I really love Sunderland. It’s a very calm, convenient and nice place for a student to stay focused on their studies. I have made many friends from other countries, and we support each other throughout our studies, and socially too. “Cosmetic Science is a new course, and our lecturers are very supportive and always willing to give advice and help whenever we need it. I am really enjoying my time here. “For now I’m going with the flow, but after graduation I hope to work in Europe, and eventually create my own brand of cosmetic products.”
Sabrina Baharin, from Malaysia, BA (Hons) Cosmetic Science
“Sunderland has given me the chance to meet great people from all over the world, from the United States to Nigeria. “The tutors are very helpful and make the whole experience more interesting and enjoyable. The facilities are state-of-theart, and the course itself is very hands on. I am writing for the University’s student news website, SRNews, and I am also a production assistant on Made in Tyne and Wear on their news and current affairs show – The Week. “I am having an amazing time, and I’m learning things I never imagined I would know in the first year of my degree.”
Theofanis Pegkas, from Greece, BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism

“Step by step I’ve become more confident since coming to Sunderland. I’ve enjoyed the course, had a great chance to improve my English and I have enjoyed swimming and participating in various sports. I also took part in an International Fashion Show in my Foundation year. I would like to try a lot of different things while I’m studying here. “When I graduate I would like to work in the publishing or advertising industry, making the most of what I have learned in my degree. Like many people, Levinia was initially confused about which university she wanted to go to. “My instructors suggested that studying abroad would widen my job prospects. So after comparing University rankings, scholarships and tuition fees, the University came out on top. “The lecturers are approachable and supportive – even if it is a personal issue. My course has given me the technical knowledge to apply in practical situations, which, coupled with some fantastic help from the Careers and Employability Service, has been instrumental in the fact that I have already secured a graduate position in Cummins Turbo Technologies. “Sunderland helps you make the most of your degree, take on challenges, step out of your comfort zone and help change your life.”
Having already completed his MSc in Public Health at the University, Philip knew the University was the perfect place to continue his studies. He said: “I was taken by the University’s diversity, the rich teaching and learning culture and it’s such a friendly city too. “The University is an ideal place for multidisciplinary research, with supportive facilities, a conducive learning environment and a lively campus life. The research programme journey can be a long and lonely one, but here at Sunderland you are never alone thanks to excellent supervisory support.”
Philip Anyanwu, from Nigeria, PhD Pharmacy, Health and Wellbeing
Levinia Mathews, from Kuwait, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering
“I’ve enjoyed meeting and getting to know new people from different cultures all over the world. “I’ve really enjoyed giving presentations, which have improved my research skills, my confidence and my communication skills. “I work for The Housing Bank for Trade and Finance in Jordan, who are sponsoring my Masters degree, so after graduation I’ll return there.”

COMBINED SUBJECTS In today’s highly competitive job market it is the graduate with the greatest range of subject knowledge and skills that will be able to offer prospective employers exactly what they are looking for. The University of Sunderland offers 21 subjects which can be combined in a variety of ways to create a course tailored to the diverse and demanding needs of today’s graduates and their employers. This offers a unique flexibility for students to combine complementary or diverse subject disciplines in line with their particular interests. Subjects can be combined as either major-minor – (two subjects with an emphasis on one of them), or dual – (two subjects combined on an equal basis). There is also the opportunity to take a range of skills-based modules in areas such as Languages to enhance your employability.
Teaching and assessment Our academic lecturers and staff take great pride in their teaching. Sunderland has succeeded in attracting experts in a wide range of disciplines who are able to inspire and motivate you. You will experience a wide variety of learning and teaching techniques, including: •
Formal lectures, workshops and video presentations
•
Personal study, based on directed reading and web-based learning
•
Group work, projects and presentations
•
Tutorials and surgeries
•
Video/multimedia presentations
By using each of these techniques, you have the best possible chance to develop the subject knowledge and team working skills that employers demand. Assessment is by coursework, such as presentations, reports, essays, time-constrained tests, group and individual projects and formal examinations.
Combined Subjects is normally a 3 year full-time course, but if you are taking a Modern Foreign Language you will be required to spend a year overseas in a country that speaks the language that you are studying, in addition to your three years of on-campus study. Studying a Combined Subjects degree, you will be supported throughout your course by a team of academic staff who will provide guidance on all aspects of your study throughout your degree.
54
You are encouraged to develop as an independent learner supported by a variety of facilities, including the well-equipped library, online databases, full Internet access and a range of other media. You can also obtain excellent support and advice from the University’s Student and Learning Support Service. In addition to your academic subjects, you may also be able to take an elective module at each level. This may be from another subject or may be from a range of generic or skills based modules that are on offer. For more information: Tel: +44 (0)191 515 3000 or go to www.sunderland.ac.uk and search the course database using the course title.

The Customised Awards Scheme This innovative scheme provides a new concept in learning which allows you to customise a course to your personal development aspirations or career aims. The scheme offers both undergraduate and postgraduate routes of study. This scheme is suitable if you wish to specialise in a subject or subjects where a named single honours or Combined Subjects programme does not exist. The title of your award will be negotiated. Alternatively, you might wish to experience a range of subjects and achieve a degree in Customised Studies. Each course of study is individually constructed to ensure that it has academic integrity and coherence. Recent examples of named customised degrees include: •

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND HOW TO APPLY Academic qualifications The University recognises all internationally accredited qualifications. Each application is considered on its own merits and we give careful consideration to other factors such as work and life experience. To be considered for an undergraduate degree course it is necessary to have the equivalent of a minimum of two UK General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level passes. Please see individual course information on the website for more detail. You can also apply for advanced entry to an undergraduate course (for example, level 2 or 3) if you have a diploma equivalent to one or two years of a UK honours degree in a relevant subject. For postgraduate courses you need to have a degree equivalent to a UK honours degree and, in some cases, relevant work experience.
English language requirement If English is not your first language, you will be required to demonstrate evidence of having achieved a score of 6 overall in the International English Language Testing Scheme (IELTS) with all element scores at 5.5 or higher. Please note: some courses require a higher level of English language – read the course description carefully to see if this applies to your chosen course. An alternative approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) and the University’s recognised English language qualifications/ tests (as approved by the University’s Academic Board) are also accepted if the applicant’s element scores are equivalent to those required for IELTS. If you are applying for a pre-sessional English Language course you must take your IELTS exams at an approved UKVI test centre listed on the UKVI website – https://www.gov.uk/ government/publications/guidance-on-applying-for-ukvisa-approved-english-language-tests

Applying for a visa to study in the UK The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) rules are controlled by a Points-Based System (PBS). Tier 4 is specifically for students coming to the UK to study. All new non EEA/EU/Swiss National students wanting to study in the UK are required to apply for entry clearance under Tier 4. To apply for a Tier 4 visa, you will require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter together with the original copies of all supporting documents. CAS letters are only valid for six months and you cannot apply for a visa earlier than three months before your course starts. When your visa is issued, it will be to study at the University of Sunderland and your visa will show the University’s Sponsor Licence Number. Should you wish to study at an alternative higher education institution in the UK, you will be required to apply for and obtain a new visa for the institution concerned before you would be allowed to enrol. Under the UKVI regulations, the University of Sunderland will be required to report any student who obtains entry clearance on the basis of our offer but does not enrol at the start of their programme. Students who enrol at the University of Sunderland but later decide to withdraw, interrupt or suspend their studies, or who fail to attend their classes for significant periods, will also be reported to the UKVI.
For more information about the immigration process: UK Visas and Immigration www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/study-visas UKCISA (Council for International Student Affairs) www.ukcisa.org.uk/
Study abroad If you are coming to study on the course as part of your degree from an overseas institution, and the period of time that you will be studying in the UK is six months or more, you will need a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa. You will receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter which you will need to submit with your visa application. If you are studying with us for one semester only then you can enter the UK as a Short Term Student. You don’t need a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa to study with us for one semester. You may, however, need to obtain entry clearance or apply for your Short Term Student permissions before you come to study. Please check the UKVI website for more information about visa requirements.

I needed a solid understanding of technology, and business skills to organise, operate and manage systems. “Studying in the UK taught me a lot. I learnt to manage my time, and how I studied. It really gave me the skills to be able to fit into different roles in a multinational company. “What I learnt at Sunderland is that you need to collaborate and network to succeed, and that technology is the future. “I believe now that I can learn anything.”

Personal recommendation and an excellent choice of courses led Jia Li (Jess) Wong to travel to Sunderland to study advertising and design. Graduate Jess Wong, who now works as a copywriter at Leo Burnett in Kuala Lumpur, explained her time at the University of Sunderland gave her a refreshing perspective on learning that helps her daily in her career. She said: “I’d always wanted to experience life abroad because I believe in pushing myself out of my comfort zone and I thought being exposed to different cultures would open my mind and help me become a better learner. “There’s such a friendly, supportive environment at the University of Sunderland and the course I did has definitely helped to shape my thinking, which is an indispensable skill in my day-to-day role as an advertising creative.”

“Graduating with a degree from Sunderland allowed me to go to London to continue my Masters Degree in International Business and Management. After that I was offered a job as a Business System Analyst at the world’s largest oil and gas company, Saudi Aramco, in the Domestic Joint Ventures Department. Without the University of Sunderland I would not be where I am right now. “The University helped develop my knowledge and skills thanks to its amazing tutors, who are industry professionals. They have so much expertise and enthusiasm; they were extremely friendly and helpful all the way through my course. “The whole place is full of inspiration. I’m not surprised that Business at Sunderland was voted best in the North East for Student Satisfaction (Sunday Times University Guide 2014). “Sunderland is a place for new opportunities that you never thought could be possible. It gave me valuable time to really think about my future and prepare for success.”

“I chose the University of Sunderland because of its facilities and its connections with industry. I enjoyed my course which was very technical and practical, and the facilities allowed me to turn my designs into a reality. The general support, standard of lectures and workshops was at a high level. “I loved that Sunderland is close to the coast, and Newcastle and Durham. I made friends with other international students and learnt about different cultures. The Students’ Union’s sport and night life allowed me to socialise with people outside of my course. “A highlight of my studies was undertaking my work placement in motorsport. This provided me with a clear direction, and the desire to pursue a career as a Design Engineer in motorsport. “I now specialise in chassis design for F1 cars.”

I went back to this lab after finishing at Sunderland and pursued a PhD in neuroscience.” Now Dr Singleton runs one of the world’s most advanced research labs. He is a Scientific Advisor for The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lewy Body Dementia Association. “I’m incredibly proud of my lab, the people working in it and what we’ve achieved over the last decade. “My Chinese university had an exchange relationship with Sunderland, and I thought it was a good opportunity for me to go abroad. I didn’t have any particular career plan in my mind, but my module leader encouraged me to pursue a career in Human Computer Interaction, which proved to be the perfect fit for me. “My lecturers were supportive and approachable. My English was rather poor when I joined the University of Sunderland, but the lecturers were patient and I never felt nervous about asking them questions. I also made lots of friends from different nationalities while I was studying here – and the wonderful beach and seafood are another added bonus for food lovers! “I’m now Senior User Researcher in Government Digital Service. I’m currently leading research on the Digital Marketplace, which aims to make Government procurement easier, equal and transparent. “At Sunderland I learnt to be resourceful – not to hesitate to ask for support, and to reach out to experts in my field.”

UNIVERSITY‘S
TERMS AND CONDITIONS By enrolling each year, students agree to the Terms and Conditions specified in the Student Handbook issued at the time. The current Terms and Conditions are set out below. These Terms and Conditions may be varied by the University from time to time. Course directories and prospectuses describe programmes available from the University of Sunderland (‘the University’). Every effort is made to ensure that all details are correct at the time of going to press but these may be subject to alteration. Should you become a student of the University, you will receive further documents describing the teaching, examination, assessment and other educational services (‘the educational services’) offered by the University, including details of fees payable. In the event of any inconsistency between the information contained in a Directory/Prospectus and the information set out in these further documents then the further documents will prevail. The University will take all reasonable steps to provide the educational services in the manner set out in each Directory/Prospectus and in those further documents. The University does not, however, guarantee their provision. The educational services, programmes, facilities and other arrangements for students described in each Directory/Prospectus are regularly reviewed and are naturally subject to change from time to time, sometimes without notice. In order to continue to provide high quality educational services to students, the University may make variations to the contents or methods of delivery of programmes and modules, discontinue and merge or combine programmes and modules in response to; professional, statutory and/or regulatory body requirements, feedback from students and/or external examiners, the need to enhance student performance and achievement, changes to the theory in an area of research and/or changes to the practices around the subject or its delivery. In the event of any changes to programmes or modules, or the discontinuation of any programme, the University will use reasonable endeavours to help affected students switch to a suitable alternative programme or alternative HE provider if they wish to do so. Further details of the University’s process for change can be found in its ‘Process for Modifications to Programmes and Modules’ on the University’s website: http://bit.ly/AQH-E1 The University will not be deemed to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions, or otherwise liable to its students in any manner whatsoever, for any failure or delay in its ability to provide the educational services due to an event beyond the reasonable control of the University. Such an event, for the purposes of these Terms and Conditions, means any cause preventing the University from providing the educational services arising from or is attributable to acts, events, omissions or accidents beyond the reasonable control of the University including, without limitation, strikes, lockouts or other industrial disputes, protests, war or national emergency, an act of terrorism, riot, civil commotion, malicious damage, compliance with any law or government order, rule, regulation or direction, breakdown of plant or machinery, utilities failure, fire, explosion, an Act of God, flood, storm, epidemic or other natural disaster, or default or delays of suppliers or sub-contractors. The University will use all reasonable endeavours to minimise the resultant disruption to those services. It is the students’ responsibility to familiarise themselves with and to ensure compliance with the requirements of any professional body which they wish to join either before or after graduation. Students should be aware that a change in their circumstances whilst studying (e.g. acquiring criminal convictions or certain physical or mental ailments or illnesses) may affect their continued compliance and in such cases should be notified both to the relevant professional body and to the University for clarification. It should be noted that criminal convictions may not necessarily be a bar to study, but should nevertheless be notified to the University.

Where appropriate, registration on a programme may be conditional upon compliance with any requirements arising from legislation or regulations made from time to time in relation to the protection of children and vulnerable adults (including a Disclosure and Barring Service check), and/or the submission of a Medical Clearance form. International students are responsible for complying with the terms of their visa, and with Immigration legislation as in force at the relevant time more generally. International students may be required to provide evidence to the University that they are complying with these terms. International students studying at the University on a Tier 4 visa are required as a condition of their contract to maintain English language skills at least at the level required on entry to the University for the duration of their programme. The University reserves the right to re-test students at any point during their programme. The University cannot accept responsibility and expressly excludes liability for damage to or loss of students’ property whilst on University premises or the transfer of computer viruses to students’ equipment unless caused by the negligence of the University. Whilst registered as students of the University, the University requires its students to familiarise themselves with and comply with its ‘Rules in Respect of Student Conduct and Discipline’, copies of which can be obtained from the University and can be found on its website: www.sunderland.ac.uk/regulations The University requires its students, as a condition of enrolment, to ensure the payment to the University in each academic year of academic fees and charges made up of the tuition fee and any other additional charges pertaining to the programme upon which they are enrolled. Additional charges may include but are not limited to payment for study materials provided by the University such as creative art materials, computer disks, and special paper or learning packs which are intended as cheaper alternatives to textbooks, and the cost of mandatory field trips included in the programme. Students should be aware that if a student has not paid the due academic fees and charges the University reserves the right to neither allow the student to register nor continue in their studies, nor award a degree or other certification and reserves the right to take action to recover outstanding monies.
