INTERNSHIPS At the end of their course, some students will have the opportunity to do a 12 week internship within one of our busy departments at the University, such as Business Development, Academic Support, IT, Marketing and Admissions or HR, developing vital employability, office and IT skills. Leteechia Rungasamy has made an impact during her internship in Marketing and Recruitment at the University of Sunderland in London (UoSL). “After completing my undergraduate course, I applied for the University’s internship programme offered to all students. I was selected as the marketing intern and worked with the Head of Services for Students and Marketing. “During my 3 month internship, I was given the responsibility to handle the social media platforms of the institution. I managed to increase the amount of engagement on the social platforms among existing and prospective students. Following my internship, I decided to enrol for the MSc tourism programme and was offered the job as part time Marketing assistant at the University. This has motivated me to learn more about Marketing and develop my skills. “I believe my qualification and experience as a marketing intern will open doors for me. I can now fit in both Marketing and Tourism & Hospitality sector. However, I aspire to become
11
an entrepreneur. This journey has shaped business ideas in my head such as having my own Travel Marketing and PR Agency which promotes destinations. “There is a strong support system over here. It has been a memorable and satisfying journey for me. I am still going strong and I am working towards another ‘First Class Honours’ for my MSc. If I can, you can do it too!”

Department’s expertise, which includes patient-centred care and public health interventions.
Nursing is increasingly a profession where higher qualifications are required for promotion. A Masters qualification can help you take on roles like nurse team manager and nurse consultant. Such roles will allow you to continue your professional development and make a bigger contribution to people’s health and well-being.
Recent graduates from the course have gained promotion into higherbanded roles in the NHS. Other graduates have progressed to doctoral programmes and moved into lecturing and teaching.
The content of this course is based on the NHS Leadership Framework, including managing people, working within teams, making decisions, evaluating impact and facilitating transformation. You will refine and practise skills and also enhance your ability to teach, mentor and manage other members of the health care team. The course also responds to changes in the public health system. Modules include epidemiology and sociological perspectives in health. Everything that you study will be directly related to the needs of the NHS and other health care employers.

MSc Public Health Do you want to play a role in improving the health of communities and populations? Public Health MSc will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to make a genuine contribution to public health policy and practice, whether your interest is on local community initiatives, or in more regional or international approaches. You will study health behaviours, chronic disease risk factors, health services and socio-economic inequalities in health. Health protection is concerned with responding to communicable diseases, environmental hazards and natural disasters, which can also have disproportionately severe impacts on marginalised and less advantaged population groups. Epidemiology is the science concerned with studying the patterns of disease occurrence in human populations. Therefore this method underpins almost every aspect of modern public health practice, from the identification of higher risk population groups, through to exploring disease causation and evaluating policies and interventions with the most appropriate study designs. Since modern public health threats are inextricably linked to social, political and economic forces, acting locally, regionally and internationally, you will be equipped to explore the major current societal trends which are driving and exacerbating these challenges.
35
You will examine how modern sociological thinking can unpick the complexity of health trends at local, regional and international levels and explore the role of Governments (local and national) and other major stakeholders for example non-governmental organisations and corporations in making a genuine impact on population health. When you graduate, you will be equipped to work in wide range of policy and practice settings from health education to health service planning and health advocacy for specific population groups and also be ready to explore further research opportunities. MODULES INCLUDE Sociological Perspectives in Health / Epidemiology / Global Issues in Health / Applied Public Health / Health Behaviour Change and Brief Interventions / Applied Research Methods and Project Management / Masters Project ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate degree with a classification of 2:2 or above, in a healthrelated discipline.
