Surrey Police Service Supporting Surrey Students

surrey Police Service (SPS) is committed to community policing and to being responsive to the needs of the different neighbourhoods within the boundaries of the City of Surrey. This is true for educational facilities as well. Whether they are K-12 or post secondary institutions, places of learning in Surrey are, really, communities within the community. Each comes with a specific set of challenges and advantages. That said, there is a shared formula for a successful community which involves engagement, commitment from stakeholders, and fostering an environment that allows the members to flourish.

SPS Sergeant Jag Khosa visited several communities within our community in the last month. From spending time with grade 6 and 7 students at a north Surrey elementary school to a gang presentation he delivered to university students at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Surrey Campus, the central message was the same – youth and their places of learning are important.

Sergeant Khosa joined Surrey School Trustee Gary Thind and Surrey District Parents Advisory Council Representative Rani Sanghera on Red FM on February 15 for a panel discussion concerning school and community safety. Elementary schools, secondary schools and post secondary institutions in our city are deserving of attention and support because these small communities form part of the larger one. The health and success of these places of learning for Surrey’s youth is so important because, while the immediate impact is on the city today, the larger impact will be on our collective future tomorrow.

Improper Attention to fees

You need to understand the fees you pay when you invest as they reduce your return. Before making an investment, ask questions and evaluate the available options. For instance, two investments may carry similar risk and expected return, but one may have higher fees –all else being equal, the fees would affect your returns.

Not making optimum use of REsP as an investment account

It is a proven fact that among the asset classes, equities provide the highest longterm rate of return. An early investment into an RESP will let your stocks grow for 18 years or more.

Irregular monitoring of your account statements

To show the activity in your account and provide an update on your investments, your financial institution sends you monthly or quarterly account statements via mail or makes them available online. It’s essential that you examine your statements to confirm: lack of information about the ways you can utilize REsP funds

4That the investments that you have bought and sold are correct.

4The fees and commissions charged on the investment are correct.

4The amount of gain/loss of your investments.

If you find anything unclear/ incorrect, contact your financial representative immediately.

You may use the RESP funds for any reasonable post-secondary education expense of your child in Canada as well as out of country (including apprenticeships). An added advantage is- the capital that you have contributed (not the grants or the money made from the grants) can be used for any purpose as per your need.

It is evident that a wisely decided appropriate amount of investment for your child’s post-secondary education will ensure the growth of funds in the best possible manner, which will be readily available when you need them for the intended purpose.
