I’m not tech savvy:

Dia Mirza A

ctress-producer Dia Mirza says she may not be tech savvy, but she realises the importance to understand technology as a consumer. “I’m not tech savvy but I think as a consumer it’s very important to understand what it is that we are consuming –and whether it’s the technology that we bring home, whether it’s lifestyle products or the food we eat or whatever,” Dia said. The 35-year-old actress, who was here to unveil New Elite Inverter SKY series for the electronic brand Panasonic — Radiant cooling air conditioners, says there are certain questions a consumer must ask before making a purchase. “I don’t believe that we’re encouraged enough by corporations and companies to ask questions and I think as modern day citizens of the world who are exposed to so much information, it is urgent and important that we apply that understanding and ask these questions before we bring anything home,” she added. Talking about her association with the brand, Dia said: “I’ve had a longstanding relationship with Panasonic with the company with the capacity of a brand ambassador in the past. I have been their ecoambassador as well today of course I was here for the launch of a beautiful technology that they are introducing through their ACs”

Jagga Jasoos

Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif film gets postponed again. Here is why

T

he release date of Jagga Jasoos starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif might get delayed further. As of now, Anurag Basu’s ambitious project has a release date of April 7. However, the director is concerned about the holiday time in schools during this period which might affect the overall business. Anurag expressed his concern in a series of tweets. The director wrote, “#JaggaJasoos is a Family Holiday film. Since exams r pushed at most of the places. We r contemplating the delay. Only IF v get a better Date. But for now, a team is getting ready for 7th April.” Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of this adventure romantic comedy. This is not the first time that Ranbir Kapoor’s film has got postponed. The production work of Jagga Jasoos has been going on for more than two years now. Ever since real-life couple Ranbir and Katrina broke up in 2015, their

film remained in news for all the wrong reasons. From Ranbir and Kat not getting along well on the set to their ensuing cold war post breakup, Jagga Jasoos has consistently in headlines. There are also speculations that Ranbir and Katrina might not promote the movie together. Gossip mills are also abuzz that some scenes of Jagga Jasoos might be reshot and this could also be one of the reasons for the film’s delay. The trailer, however, looks promising and rides on the sheer acting chops of the young Kapoor. Ranbir and Katrina have earlier worked on successful films including Raajneeti and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. The film is crucial to both actors’ career. Ranbir might have a hit in his kitty with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil from 2016, but he would like to be the ruling superstar. On the other hand, Katrina reportedly has no other projects besides Tiger Zinda Hai co-starring her ex Salman Khan.

Rangoon has my most heroic character:

B

Shahid Kapoor

ollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who plays a soldier of the British Indian Army in Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming historical war drama Rangoon, says it is one of the most heroic characters he has ever played in a film so far. Shahid said, “My character Nawab Malik is a very different character from Tommy Singh (Udta Punjab), Charlie-Guddu (Kaminey) and Haider (Haider), and that was the reason why I played the part. Vishal sir always offers me something challenging and different.” “Nawab Malik is the most heroic character I have ever played so far, who is a soldier with a strong sense of duty and big patriot. It is a very inspiring character and I am glad to get the opportunity.” The film is set in a time when India was going through a political turmoil. Asked about understanding the psychology of a character of that era, Shahid said, “Of course,

the socio-political scenario of that time was quite different. The whole nation was aroused to achieve freedom. Nawab Malik symbolized that emotion in the film. But there is an emotional tussle as he was an Indian, serving for British Army and there come different dynamics that makes it interesting.” Considering how Shahid has delivered some of his best performance as an actor in collaboration with Bhardwaj, when asked about how their equation has developed over a period of time, he said: “I share a special bond with him. Since the film is a director’s medium... If as an actor I am the cake, he is the icing on the cake.” “So no matter how good I perform, the outcome is totally dependent on the imagination of the director... How he conceived the scene, how he is capturing the nuances of my performance, camera movement. Every time when Vishal sir shoots me, I look better than what I am, I think.”

Scarlett Johansson has promising news for Black Widow fans

A

ctor Scarlett Johansson thinks her Avengers character Black Widow is right for a stand-alone movie. The 32-year-old stars as Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has “talked” with Marvel chief Kevin Feige about the possibility of giving the character her own movie, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a stand-alone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself,” Johansson told Total Film magazine. Johansson added that Marvel’s “really huge roster” of planned projects could prove difficult to work around. “Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it,” she said.

with more is my sister. Because we get into these talks about whose Scotch is better. She naturally veers towards something which is more smoky, while I prefer the sweeter, mellow flavour.” Freida Pinto’s performance in Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire was widely appreciated. The film won her Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Breakthrough Performance Award at Palm Springs International Film Festival. n Wednesday, February 8, Kids Play held their Annual Bullying Prevention Forum at Bell Performing Arts Centre, Surrey. The aim of this forum was to broaden our understanding of bullying, harassment, discrimination, and violence among children and youth. This was done by sharing knowledge, exploring new perspectives and acknowledging that bullying and other forms of degrading treatment have to be understood as a complex interplay between individual, interpersonal and contextual factors. The forum invited perspectives from different disciplines and areas. This free information session was facilitated by speakers from Red Cross Respect Education, Mediate BC, Bully Free BC and Crime Stoppers. The forum created multidisciplinary and cross-level dialogues and panels to improve the understanding of the topic. $5000 in scholarships was distributed to students at the end of the forum. Kids Play believes education is a fundamental human right and no one should be deprived of their right to educational opportunities. This is the reason behind their free programs. The forum was a success and they are working towards putting together similar programs in the upcoming months.

Jolly L.L.B. 2

It is never be easy for a seriousminded courtroom satire that swivels around the grim reality of fake encounters to stick to a style steeped in wit and breezy humour without occasionally wobbling off its axis. Jolly LLB 2, caught in a cramped channel between gravitas and jest, does sometimes teeter dangerously close to straying on to shaky ground. But thanks to the politics that underlines writer-director Subhash Kapoor’s flashier follow-up to his 2013 sleeper hit, Jolly LLB 2 is a film that makes important and relevant points about distorted law enforcement and justice delivery in a democracy of disempowered and oppressed constituents. While the playbook that Kapoor employs here is largely the same as the one he used in the inaugural entry, the key personnel on board this time around, barring the notable exception of the fabulousas-ever Saurabh Shukla, are a new lot. That apart, the follow-up is set in Lucknow (although references to the city are beeped out on several occasions on CBFC orders). “Muskuraiye, aap Lucknow mein hai,” a seasoned advocate requests his infinitely less experienced rival Jagdishwar Mishra ‘Jolly’. The latter, of course, has no reason to flash a smile, having got tangle owing to one of the minor into a major emotional and moral shenanigans he indulges in to keep

march 2017

/saentertainment_news_magazine

/ansalmedia

himself going. Jolly LLB 2 does, however, have moments that are

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

both funny and thought-provoking. If only the film wasn’t stretched so thin, its middle portions might have been far less dreary. Its length sucks life and breath out of the film, rendering the scenes leading up to the climax rather limp. Matters are worsened by an underwhelming, tacked-on denouement. The first time around, the director was driven purely by a spirit of creative independence. Jolly LLB 2, a ‘bigger’ production, plays more by rules that are skewed towards the needs of a mainstream audience. With superstar Akshay Kumar stepping into Arshad Warsi’s shoes, the film sheds its commercial underdog tag. In the bargain, it also loses out on some of the charming spontaneity that Warsi’s natural comic flair had lent the legal drama. Although many of the scenes in this film, especially the protracted ones in the courtroom, are scripted and staged very differently from how they were in Jolly LLB, Akshay Kumar, to his credit, never loses sight of the need for restraint. Playing a callow but cocksure lawyer not averse to bending the rules when he is in need of money, he aspires to free himself from the clutches of a legal eagle (Ram Gopal Bajaj) who uses him as an errand boy.

Contd. from previous issue (Part 7) in any nonsense arguments with Sam. After sending the driver back, I ordered my meal into my room. After changing my clothes, I thought of telling my mom everything. At least, that would unburden my mind a bit. Just then, there was a knock at the door. The waiter had brought my meal. While taking my meal, I decided to tell everything to my mom and I called her. “Hello Sonia, How are you?”, my mom asked me. “No mom, nothing is right here!”, I replied. “Good heavens! What happened, honey?”, my mom exclaimed. I narrated mom the whole story. My whole body was trembling while talking to my mom. “Don’t worry, Sonia. I’ll talk to Sam’s mother. Don’t keep any burden on your mind.”, my mom gathered herself and assured me. “I’m unable to decide what to do next?”, I asked my mom.

“Don’t get mad at Sam. Deal with him patiently. We’ll take care of everything.”, mom explained to me. I realized that I had done the right thing by sharing my heart with my mom. I was a bit unburdened then. I turned the TV on after having my meal but I was unable to focus on anything. I lay on the bed after turning the TV off. 7. Height of Sam’s idiocy After some time, Sam came and started banging on the door. I opened the door. Sam’s terrible anger was clearly visible from his reddened eyes and face. He was drunk as a skunk. Sam closed the door and began manhandling me. “Sam, be conscious. What are you doing?”, I pleaded. “What do you think of yourself? How dare you leave me alone there?” Sam yelled. “Sam, stop it!” “Why stop? Who do you think you are? How dare you insult me like that?”, Sam screamed again. “Sam, your drinking is awfully bad. I just didn’t want to make any fuss over there.”, I tried to reason with Sam. “You don’t understand what I like, Sonia.”, Sam hollered. He continued hitting and hurting me. He was behaving like a lunatic.

My shoulders began aching from his strong and repeated pushes. Eventually, I gave him a hard push to stop him. He advanced towards me again. I tried to stop him. Sam clutched me from my marriagebracelet set so tightly that some of them broke and pricked into my skin. I cried in pain. Holding Sam’s arms in frustration, I tried to push him far away from me. My sharp nails peeled his skin and he began bleeding. Sam got infuriated further. I was unable to fathom what was developing. Sam slapped me so hard that my living daylight was almost out. Before Sam could further assault me, I ran and picked up a knife from the food trolley. “Don’t advance anymore, Sam.”, I warned. “What would you do?” kill me? Come on kill me.”, Sam began challenging me. I wasn’t daring enough to do that. I turned the knife blade toward myself. “If you moved ahead, I would do something daring. Don’t repent later that I didn’t warn you. You will be sorry for all your life.”, my tolerance had crossed all limits. “Look, put the knife aside!”, although Sam was badly inebriated, he calmed down a bit. Contd. in next issue

CHEST PAINS: COULD IT BE, ONE OF THESE SEVEN THINGS

T

he first thing when we have chest pains we think about a Heart Attack

If we talk with leading cardiologists across the country, and all of them will reiterate one thing: If you’re having chest pain, and you’re not 100% sure what’s causing it, either call your doctor or call 911. It is Always Nice to be on top of things rather than waste time and succumb to Permanent damage or even death 1) H eartburn You might be wondering how someone could mistake the symptoms of acid reflux for a heart attack, but there’s a reason why it’s called heartburn, after all. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when a person’s stomach contents -- including the gastric acids that help break down food -- back up into the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat and stomach. Stomach acid is highly acidic, hence, the burning sensation behind your breastbone; on the pH scale, falling somewhere between battery acid and vinegar. (Our stomachs are lined with protective membranes that shield it from the corrosive effects of acid, while our esophagus does not.) The occasional reflux is fairly common and probably nothing to worry about, but if you’re experiencing it twice a week or more, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Left untreated over time, GERD can cause asthma, chest congestion, and a condition called Barrettes Esophagus , which may increase your chances of developing a rare type of cancer. 2) Muscle Strain Weekend warriors, take note: If you haven’t lifted anything heavier than a MacBook for more than a few years, you might want to rethink that CrossFit class you signed up for. It’s possible for someone to mistake a strained chest muscle for something more serious, like a heart attack, says A Cardiologist “I had a patient who came in with chest pain and he was worried he was having a heart attack,” she says. “After taking his

history, I learned he had moved [to a new house] and hadn’t lifted heavy furniture in years. But he did the right thing, coming in.” Doctors don’t expect patients to be able to tell the difference between a heart attack and a pulled chest muscle, she says, but a good rule of thumb is that if you can press on the wall of the chest and it feels even more painful, it’s more likely to be a musculoskeletal injury than a problem with your ticker. 3) Costochondritis An estimated 13% to 36% of adults who show up to the emergency room or their doctor’s office with acute chest pain are diagnosed with costochondritis, or inflammation where a rib bone meets up with the cartilage, according to the journal American Family Physician. Although doctors can’t always pinpoint what triggered the condition, the culprits can range from viral infections to chest injuries. Typically, people feel a type of pressure on their chest wall and -- similar to a strained muscle -- a tenderness when they press on the area. In this case, a doctor will probably start by taking your medical history and doing a physical exam. “A physician is going to want to rule out cardiac and other serious issues first,” says Dr. “It’ll most likely be a diagnosis by exclusion.” If you do have costochondritis, the pain typically goes away in a few days or weeks; taking over-the-counter painkillers can help. 4) Shingles The Chicken Pox virus stays in one’s Body then at old age will break in to Shingles which Spreads along a nerve root with excruciating pain The first symptoms include itching and burning skin. If the area over the chest is affected, someone might mistake this new pain for a heart attack A few days later, however, the telltale rash can appear, followed by blisters. If you think you have shingles, you should call your doctor ASAP. Antiviral medications can lessen the pain and

/saentertainment_news_magazine

/ansalmedia

shorten the duration of the symptoms, but only if you take them within 72 hours of the rash appearing. If it’s too late to take antivirals, your doctor can prescribe a prescription painkiller. 5) Pericarditis If you’ve been battling a viral infection for the last few days, then suddenly wake up to a sharp, stabbing pain in your chest, you may have developed pericarditis, an inflammation in the layers of tissue that surround our heart Respiratory infections are often to blame, though other culprits include autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Although pericarditis is usually benign,it can really impact your quality of life. Your doctor may diagnose your condition after ordering a CT scan, EKG, or chest x-ray. Chances are, however, your pericarditis will clear up in a few days or weeks simply by resting or taking Dr. Pargat over-the-counter pain medicine like Singh Bhurji ibuprofen, which also helps quell inflammation. 6) Pancreatitis Just because a person’s chest pain isn’t heart attack-related doesn’t mean that it isn’t dangerous. One example: acute pancreatitis -- the sudden inflammation of the pancreas, which is located just behind the stomach. “Intense abdominal pain can radiate up to the chest, this pain from pancreatitis is usually a deep-seated, intense pain.” Oftentimes, pancreatitis occurs when Gall Stones ( usually made of hardened cholesterol) trigger inflammation in the pancreas -something that’s more likely to occur in women than men. If you think you have pancreatitis, you should get medical attention right away; you’ll probably have to stay in the hospital for a few days to get antibiotics, IV fluids, and pain medication. Your doctor will also want to do blood work and order other tests, like a CT scan or abdominal ultrasound.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a type of heart disease caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Over time, cholesterol deposits lodge themselves in the walls of these arteries, which can blocks off blood flow and cause chest pain. While CAD can cause a sudden heart attack, it can also contribute to heart failure and arrhythmias. If you do receive a coronary artery disease diagnosis, your doctor may want to start you on statins, insert a stent into one of the arteries, or schedule you for bypass surgery Which brings us back to the number one rule cardiologists gave us: If you’re experiencing chest pain, it’s important to get it checked out, stat. “One of the biggest public health messages has been to get people to take action when they have chest pain,” says Cardiologist “And we still have people who ignore their pain, who feel chest pain but who don’t think heart attack... I understand being worried about, what if the ambulance shows up in my driveway and I come back and it was just indigestion? And that’s why I specifically say, ‘There have been enough people who have died at home thinking it was indigestion and it was really a heart attack.’ If it’s a new symptom and you’ve never had it before, or the pain is coming or going or getting worse, call 911 -- don’t call your girlfriend or your husband or drive yourself. Just call.” Always Consult your Physician. This Article is only Educational

A doctor, whose diagnosis is accurate in the first interface with the patient, provides requisite relief to his/ her patient at a fast speed. To achieve so, a doctor-within a limited time frameneeds a patient’s full involvement to explain the core information about the symptoms, history et al to hammer out in time prognosis.

How to prepare for a Doctor’s

appointment?

Surinder Shaun Kochhar

B

eing hard pressed on time front, on an average, a doctor spends about 20 minutes with a patient. So his team up with you being limited, the time is opportune for you to properly prepare for an appointment. For an accurate diagnosis, patient’s preparation is the key. Answer all the questions in an open-ended manner, not close-ended. Good preparation will also go a long way to decelerate any anxiety you may be feeling about the appointment. Does a doctor expect something from a patient? Answer is yes. A doctor is always saying, “Help me to help you.” A patient increase the likelihood of an accurate diagnosis if he comes prepared with the details and history of his problem, anticipate questions, know his medications and being up to date with his medical records. The process that a doctor follows is mentioned ut-infra: • Assessment of the symptoms • Diagnosis of the present ailment • Planning for a cure /prescription • Intervention as you start consuming medicine[s] • Evaluation is the review after a short period The majority of the work, a doctor does, lies in your description of the problem. While it’s true that a physician beget additional information from the physical exam, laboratory and imaging tests and to cap it all, your medical history provides a valuable direction. The more organized your presentation, the easier it will be, for your Doctor to arrive at a correct diagnosis. What as a patient we should do? • Prepare for your Doctor visit in advance: A recent review of studies showed that patients who filled out a detailed checklist before an office visit, or received in-office coaching that focused on their health status, asked more questions to the attending doctor and got more satisfaction from the visit. • Anticipate what the doctor needs to know. A doctor normally ask many

44

march 2017

questions to reach a correct diagnosis. Answer all the questions in an open-ended manner not close-ended. In case you are deficient in input, a corrected diagnosis may be eluded. Doctor’s questions apply to most problems or symptoms. If you’ve thought about how you would answer them ahead of time, you’ll be judiciously prepared. • Jot down your symptoms: Seek the help of a relative or a close friend to prepare for and accompany you to the appointment, if needed. It is always better to bring someone with you to provide a second set of ears. You may repeatedly think you remember everything, but by the time you get to see the doctor you will forget the majority of what you wanted to tell or ask the doctor. I know, you know that. So, like myself, write down all of your medical problems, and also the names and the dosages of the medications you’re taking. Once you’ve written it all down, you are ready to take off. In case you get emotional in explaining to your doctor, make a copy and you can even give it at reception, when you arrive for your doctor’s visit. She’ll add it to your medical records. The doctor will go through it before he/she is with you. I still remember when my reverend father went for a BPH surgery and he handed over a hand written detail of his medical history to attending Surgeon Dr. Singh, the doctor read it very very carefully. He again read it for the second time and thanked my dad and stated, “I wish every patient come fully prepared”

/saentertainment_news_magazine

/ansalmedia

Once you’re with the doctor, take notes in case you want to look something up. Write down the recommended diet, exercise and life style plus and minus. And don’t hesitate to ask sensible questions. • Be honest, and don’t leave out details. The doctor want to know everything medical that has happened to a patient that includes the removal of any organs. You might forget to tell doctor you had your gallbladder out. Also tell the doctor everything that you’re doing that could affect your health. Are you taking laxatives? Are you on a low carb diet? How much exercise do you get? Are you using a sleep aid? How much alcohol do you drink? Do you smoke? If you’re using illegal drugs, the doctor needs to know that also. Are you under stress? Have you ever endured extraordinary stress? For example, a loss of a child or a spouse, job setbacks. The doctor wants to know about anything that might have had a powerful impact on the patient. A visit to the physician is totally confidential, always Prof. Surinder remember. Shaun Kochhar LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM • Explain history in an (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.) accurate manner: A Doctor appreciates an accurate history whether it comes from the patient or related / accompanying someone who clearly has the correct information. Both must ensure that there is no difference of opinion in explaining things to a doctor in the exam room. • Be specific and crystal clear in your talk: Instead of telling the doctor that I am sick, we should explain the symptoms e.g. feel warm, have temperature, a sore throat, arunning nose and a che all over. Give as

/saentertainmentnewsmagazine

After God and mother , on respect front, I lock the doctor along with a father and a guru, but once we are in a life threatening situation, as mother being hapless and helpless prays to the Almighty , then it is the Doctor who jumps a couple of notches and God through a doctor cures His creation. That’s why, every doctor says, I care, He cures.” much information as you can. • Talk first about the problem that bothers you most: If you have more than one problem, prepare a separate history for each. Present them one at a time so you don’t confuse your Doctor and successfully try to make it clear and complete. This is in your own interest. In case, due to deficient or inadvertently incorrect information from you, a doctor errs in diagnosis, then prognosis will elude you for the time being. • Explain how you’re feeling: You know better than anyone else how you feel, and that information is vital to your doctor. That’s why, I request, prefer to explain medical history yourself. Has your appetite increased / decreased? Is your sleep Contd. In Next Issue.

4. Plan Your Workouts A variety of computer programs and websites will help you to plan your workouts in advance. If you’re the kind of person who needs to have a schedule made up in advance in order to be able to exercise, this can be a great way to use technology. 4 Ways You Can Use Technology to Aid in Your Workout Routine

T

here are many ways that you can use technology to help you to chart, improve upon and plan your fitness routine. Whether you’re an amateur athlete or a professional, technological advances in recent years have tremendously helped to customize workout plans, coordinate schedules and do a wide variety of other things to help with your workout. You can even use FitDay to help in this regard; the FitDay tracker allows you to help track distances in your workouts, as well as calories burned and many other statistics. 1. Listening to You IPod The iPod is one of the most common ways to use technology when it comes to enhancing your workout. Listening to music while you work out can help you to focus, to not be distracted by the passing of the time, and to not get bored. You can use your iPod to listen to podcasts that include the news, sports and weather as well, allowing you to keep up to date on what’s going on in the world while you exercise. IPods can be used to watch movies or television programs while you work out in a gym. 2. Heart Rate Monitors Heart rate monitors are a great tool for people interested in building up their fitness. Because your heart rate as you work out will have a major impact on the kind of exercise that you get, as well as on how you improve your fitness, it’s important to keep track of it at all times. While many gym machines have these sensors built in, those who use other equipment or exercise on their own will be better able to use portable heart rate monitors. 3. Track Distance and Pace A pedometer or another digital distance tracker can show you how far you’ve walked, ran, biked or swam. These monitors are very helpful for keeping track of your distance. If you chart your time as well, you can keep track of your pace. Both of these statistics allow you to better compare different workouts and chart your improvement.

Rooney to stay at Man

United

M

anchester United’s Wayne Rooney intends to stay at the club, ending speculation that he could move to China. “Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Manchester United,” Rooney said in a statement. British media had reported that Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford, was in China to see if he could negotiate a deal for the England forward to leave United. Rooney, 31, has been unable to command a regular starting place under manager Jose Mourinho and faces a race to be fit for a likely substitute’s role in the League Cup final against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday. In January he broke Bobby Charlton’s club goal-scoring record but has fallen behind the likes of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford in the competition for a first-team place. In the statement, on United’s website, he said: “I hope I will play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts.” His current Manchester United contract expires after the 2017-2018 season.

Mother-Daughter Relationship:

he relationship between a daughter and her mother is very powerful and second to none. How a woman sees herself, how she is in her adult relationships with a partner[s], and how she mothers her own children, is deeply influenced by her relationship with her own mother, which can affect her health and self-esteem too. The time you are going to start having major problems, nay, concerns with your daughter will be around adolescence. Adolescence is a very testing time for children and their parents alike. Fortunately this wild swing from closeness to remoteness usually lasts until the daughter reaches adulthood. If the mother and daughter can hang in there during adolescence, the relationship moves to a different level and becomes more of a rewarding friendship. And then the daughter gets a job, become independent, may be move away from home and do the adult things in life. There’s a need to grow up and the relationship has a paradigm shift. The relationship changes again when the daughter has children. There’s a greater level of understanding and depth of responsibility that a mother have to her daughter. on what the other person is saying. Try to understand the core message. Hold your nerves. Remember, temper is a valuable possession, do not lose it. Love and respect the person, we can hate the bad comment. Repair damage quickly: The proven method for a healthy relationship to continue is, not in avoiding a conflict, because conflict is inevitable. The remedy is to deal with it head on. This applies to mother and daughter relationships too. Not resolving a conflict can have negative consequences. There is no logic to be in a tug of war with your mum or daughter. Show empathy by putting yourself in her shoes: In case, you are a daughter, think of your mom as a woman with her own story of life, her own wounds and hurts who was born and raised in a different generation with different values and difficult family relationships and issues. As such, address your mom or daughter’s feelings with empathy and offer an acceptable solution. Learn to forgive each other’s mistakes: Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Wise people ignore. Forgiveness is the key for wellbeing. A daughter have to forgive her mom- being wrongin order to be healthy. The power of forgiveness is really for the person who forgives not the recipient. Forgiveness repair the damage quickly. For a daughter, there is no one more special than a mother to forgive. Never forget that your mother is on the wrong side of age, being too old. The mother, being more mature is expected to be equally responsive and up to the mark. Agree to disagree: Moms and daughters disagree on many topics, such as marriage, parenting and career. And they usually try to convince the other to change those opinions. Moms feel threatened and rejected that their daughters are making different decisions. Daughters think their moms disapprove of them and get defensive. Live in the present: Moms and daughters should avoid bringing up old gripes from the past and try to focus on the present. Avoid sarcasm as it is easily misinterpreted, causes hurt feelings and takes you further away from solution. Do not involve third parties: It’s common for mothers and daughters to bring someone else into their conflict. A daughter might involve dad because mom is driving her crazy. Mom might involve her sister because she feels like she can’t talk to her daughter. Either way, it is always better to talk directly to the person. Women talk more than men. Talk is like a gorilla glue that holds a relationship together, for both of them. But, too much talk is fraught with a risk of imposing on each other. Moreover, it’s important, as a mother, not to offer advice or criticismespecially about appearance-unless you are asked. Do not forget the power of praise. Mothers crave this stamp of approval from their daughters. For a thumping majority, the motherdaughter relationship is finally fulfilling. Despite conflicts and complicated emotions, 80 to 90 per cent of women, in a survey, reported a good relationship with their mother. It is normal and really healthy for moms and daughters to have disagreements, subject to a stipulation that they have a redressal mechanism in place. Both should try spending time in talking and doing things. Go out for a lunch or shopping or getting their nails done more often.
