Holiday season is in full swing! And while most people are focused on shopping for gifts and other holiday prep, it’s important to remember a few tips for keeping your eyes healthy through all of the holiday hustle and bustle.
Be Mindful of Screen Time: With online gift shopping, holiday movies, and virtual gatherings, our eyes are working overtime. Combat digital eye strain by taking breaks every 20 minutes, focusing on an object 20 feet away to alleviate eye fatigue. Eat and Drink Wisely: What you eat and drink is important to maintaining excellent eye health. So why not incorporate eye-healthy foods in your holiday menu? Including foods like salmon, sunflower seeds, meat and poultry, sweet potatoes, spinach and

carrots in your festive feast can boost your eye health and overall wellbeing. And when it comes to consuming alcohol, moderation is key. Excessive alcohol intake has been linked to dry eyes, distorted vision and headaches. Consider Using Eye Drops: During the colder winter months, eyes can feel drier. Consider using lubricating eye drops to combat this. Use eye drops before your eyes are dry or causing you any discomfort. Keeping your eyes moisturized and well lubricated will also make you more comfortable,
allowing you to enjoy your holiday festivities to the fullest. Practice Makeup Hygiene: Glitter eyeshadow and bold looks are festive, but remember to remove all makeup before bed. Sleeping in makeup can lead to styes, cause irritation and contribute to dry eye symptoms. Wear Sunglasses: Although people think that sunglasses are only for the summer, this is simply not true! In fact, sunglasses are something that you should wear all year long to protect your eyes. In snowy conditions, sunglasses are crucial to prevent “snow blindness” or photokeratitis. Schedule An Eye Exam: Even if you think your eyes are healthy, there’s no way to know for sure until you have an eye exam with your optometrist. You should see your eye doctor every year for a routine eye exam, even if you don’t wear glasses or contacts.

Life insurance is a critical financial tool that provides security and peace of mind to individuals and their families. Yet, many people need help with purchasing and managing their life insurance policies. In this article, we will explore eight of these mistakes and guide how to avoid them to motivate members of ethnic communities to invest in this essential protection. 1. Procrastination: One of the most common mistakes is delaying the purchase of life insurance. Many individuals think they have plenty of time to secure coverage, but unexpected events can happen at any age. The sooner you invest in life insurance, the more affordable and comprehensive your coverage can be. 2. Underestimating Coverage Needs: Failing to assess your family’s financial needs accurately can lead to insufficient coverage. Consider mortgage payments, education expenses, and ongoing living costs to determine the appropriate coverage amount.

Relying Solely on Employer Coverage: Employer-provided life insurance is a valuable benefit, but it’s often insufficient to meet your family’s needs. Relying solely on this coverage can leave your loved ones financially vulnerable. 4. Neglecting Regular Policy Reviews: Life circumstances change over time— marriage, children’s birth,
career advancements, and more. Failing to review and update your policy regularly can result in coverage gaps. 5. Not Considering Term vs. Whole Life: Different life insurance policies serve different purposes. It’s essential to understand the distinctions between term and whole life insurance and choose the one that aligns with your specific goals.

In Surrey’s South Asian community, SPS attended the Lohri Shagna Si event, Diwali events, Guru Nanak Food Bank Lunch, Punjabi Press Club, India Day celebration, Mela Gadri Babian Da, Miri Piri Nagar Kirtan, and many more.
Surrey Police Service (SPS) continued their extensive efforts to both engage with Surrey communities and serve Surrey residents as first responders throughout 2023.

PS police officers have now been responding to policing call for service in Surrey for two years, with over 200 officers actively working in regular police operations, and more readying for deployment. While SPS officers are still driving RCMP vehicles for the time being, approximately half of the frontline police response in Surrey is done by SPS officers. SPS officers are also actively working in investigative teams, gang enforcement, mental health outreach, traffic, and more.

Despite the challenges of an unprecedented policing transition and the unexpected delays following the 2022 municipal election, SPS has continued to make progress over the past year. An additional 70 officers were deployed into policing operations this year, and 37 recruits graduated from the JIBC Police Academy while three more classes began their training. With the provincial government’s final decision to continue with the policing transition and the recent enactment of the Police Amendment Act, there is no doubt that the community will see the transition to Surrey Police Service accelerate in 2024.

n an era where children grapple with a multitude of challenges, both online and offline, the pivotal role of parents in providing a compassionate ear and unwavering support has never been more crucial. This article delves into the essential need for parents to cultivate a safe space for open communication,
allowing children to freely share experiences, concerns, and aspirations without judgment or repercussions. By dismantling barriers of fear and misunderstanding, we pave the way for children to navigate daily stressors, ensuring they feel supported and connected in their journey. As a high school student, I understand the tangible challenges in our ever-evolving world, from academic pressures to the intricate dynamics of social interactions and the pervasive influence of social media. Recognizing the need for parents as pillars of support and empathetic listeners, this article delves into the crucial importance of fostering a safe space for open communication. Let’s dive into why open communication is vital and how you can make it happen. Fostering a Safe Space for Communication: Imagine a home where children feel secure, knowing that expressing their thoughts and feelings is not just allowed but valued. This safe space is the breeding ground for open communication. Feeling accepted at home empowers us to share our experiences, concerns, and accomplishments. It’s about creating an environment where communication is not just allowed but encouraged. Active Engagement in Conversations: Beyond providing a safe space, actively engaging in conversations is key. Understanding our daily lives, interests, and challenges helps you build relationships where we feel valued. When you express genuine interest, it sends a powerful message that our experiences matter. This builds trust and openness within the family, making communication more natural.
www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
Navigating Challenges Together: Life is full of challenges, and facing them together transforms hurdles into opportunities for growth. When you collaborate with us in addressing life’s issues, it forms a powerful sense of unity. This shared approach instills resilience and problem-solving skills, providing emotional stability and equipping us with tools for future obstacles. In navigating challenges together, our families become a source of strength. Open Discussions: Open discussions at home serve as a gateway for us to expand our understanding of the world. Conversations with our parents cultivate a rich learning environment, offering insights into diverse perspectives, cultures, and ideas. These discussions foster curiosity, encouraging us to ask questions, seek answers, and develop a love for learning. Moreover, they create a supportive space where we can express ourselves, promoting emotional intelligence and building a foundation for healthy relationships.
Humility in Parenting: It’s common for parents to feel they’re always right, but embracing open communication means setting aside ego. Healthy discussions become a two-way learning street where both parties gain valuable insights. To foster this environment, it’s crucial to challenge the notion of absolute authority and remain open to learning from each other. This humility not only strengthens the parentchild bond but also creates a space where diverse perspectives contribute to a richer understanding of life. Fostering open communication at home empowers us to navigate the complexities of the world with confidence and knowledge. Your role as a parent is not just to guide but to be a companion in our journey through adolescence. Let’s build bridges through communication, ensuring that no matter what challenges we face, we face them together. WRITTEN BY Imroz Khosa

Look professional in cold weather A s the temperature drops and winter settles in, the challenge of maintaining a professional appearance while staying warm becomes a top priority for many working individuals.
While the weather calls for transitioning from comfortable and cool to comfortable and snugish; it is entirely possible to look polished and put together even in the coldest weather. Here’s a guide outlined by Latika Kapoor, Styling Head of FS Life to help you navigate the world of professional winter attire. Layer Smartly: Layering is the key to staying warm without compromising your professional image. Start with a
thermal or silk base layer to trap heat close to your body. Add a stylish sweater or cardigan as your midlayer, and finish with a tailored coat or blazer for a sophisticated look. This strategy allows you to adjust your clothing according to the fluctuating indoor and outdoor temperatures. Invest in Quality Outerwear: Your winter coat is a crucial element of your work wardrobe during the colder months. Opt for a well-structured, insulated coat in a neutral color like black, camel, or gray. A tailored wool coat or a classic trench can seamlessly complement your professional attire while keeping you warm during your commute and outdoor activities.
Accessorize Thoughtfully: Accessories are not just for style—they serve a practical purpose in winter workwear. Invest in a good pair of leather gloves, a stylish scarf, and a hat that complements your overall look. These accessories not only add flair to your outfit but also provide essential warmth. Choose accessories in neutral tones or classic patterns to maintain a professional appearance. Opt for SeasonAppropriate Fabrics: Selecting the right fabrics is crucial for winter workwear. Fabrics like wool, cashmere, and tweed are not only warm but also exude a professional aesthetic. Cotrise and suede are fabrics that are anticipated to make a big deal this season. Incorporate these materials into
10

your wardrobe with tailored trousers, skirts, and blazers for a polished and warm ensemble. Tailored Fit Matters: A well-tailored outfit not only looks more professional but also helps to trap heat close to your body. Ensure that your winter workwear fits you properly, especially if you are layering. Tailored jackets, pants, and dresses not only enhance your appearance but also contribute to better insulation. Experiment with Dark Colors: Dark colors have a slimming effect and are also more forgiving in terms of hiding any winter-related stains or dirt. Incorporate a mix of black, navy, and charcoal into your winter wardrobe for a professional and practical approach. Don’t Forget Indoor Attire: Remember that you’ll be spending a significant portion of
your day indoors. Choose clothing that is easy to layer and de-layer as you move between indoor and outdoor spaces. Avoid heavy, cumbersome outerwear that may be uncomfortable when worn inside. Navigating winter workwear doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By strategically layering, investing in quality outerwear, accessorizing thoughtfully, choosing warm yet stylish footwear, opting for season-appropriate fabrics, prioritizing a tailored fit, experimenting with dark colors, and considering indoor attire, you can maintain a professional and polished look throughout the colder months. Most importantly, be thoughtful about your body type and pick your attire accordingly. Always make sure to embrace your body and style rather than hoping onto trends set by influencers etc. Source: IANSLife

5 winter
skincare tips for acne-prone skin N
avigating winter with acne-prone skin can be tricky, as the cold weather, indoor heating, and temperature fluctuations tend to trigger breakouts and skin irritations. This season, arm yourself with five essential winter skincare tips tailored for acne-prone skin. With the right routine, you can effectively manage acne flare-ups and maintain a healthy, radiant complexion despite the winter challenges.
Gentle Cleansing: Begin your routine with a mild, non-drying cleanser that effectively removes impurities without stripping essential oils, creating a clean canvas without causing breakouts. Look for cleansers containing Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3. These cleansers not only aid in reducing melanin synthesis, but also combat acne, and dark spots, and assist in pigmentation correction.
Adopting these tips by Mihir Gadani, Co-Founder of OZiva becomes vital to ensure your skin stays clear and glowing throughout the colder months.
Hydration is Key: Stay refreshed by sipping water regularly throughout the day and consume at least 8 glasses of water daily for your internal hydration. Also, ensure your skin stays nourished and hydrated using an oilfree moisturizer packed with clinically proven ingredients during the cold season. Sunscreen Protection: Shielding your skin from harmful UV rays is crucial even in winter. Despite the colder temperatures, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain present and can cause damage. Utilizing a non-greasy sunscreen with a suitable Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is essential. This protective measure not only
12

helps prevent sunburn but also safeguards against longterm skin damage, including premature aging, wrinkles, and sunspots. Moreover, consistent use of sunscreen aids in preventing acne scarring by minimizing the darkening of existing acne spots caused by sun exposure. Don’t Forget Major Nutrients: One must always incorporate different foods in their daily diet to keep themselves warm and receive nutrients that are crucial for winter like Vitamin C (citrus fruits and veggies like orange, gooseberry, lemon, sweet lime, kiwi, capsicum, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli), Vitamin D (Orange juice, almond milk, rice milk and cereals), Vitamin E (Almonds, resins, walnuts) and Omega3 Fatty Acids (Flaxseeds, chia seeds, and nuts). These all help you stay healthy during the changing seasons by boosting your immune system. Also, look up the variety of local produce available in your region in winter. Try supplements that contain wholefood multivitamins for women and men like Vitamin E, and Vitamin A, and Ayurvedic herbs like Amla and Manjistha that
help improve your well-being and digestive health which will ultimately lead to happy and radiant skin and protect it from getting dull. Also, consider consuming certifiedclean protein supplements with essential multivitamins, minerals, and Ayurvedic herbal extracts for better metabolism, weight management, and maintaining your energy levels throughout the winter season. Practicing yoga, going for walks, exercising in the gym, swimming, etc. for 30 minutes daily not only helps you stay active in winter but also keeps your body and skin healthy and happy. The right balance of nutritious food and water intake can keep you healthy even when it’s icy outside. Though people crave highly processed foods and heavy and rich dishes during the cold weather, plant-based meals help avoid digestive discomfort, keep energy levels steady, and stabilize our gut microbiome. Lentils, cereals, fruits, and veggies meet our protein, vitamin, and fiber needs and boost immunity. Moreover, nutrientrich supplements are free of artificial ingredients and preservatives. Live the power of red, add a little oomph to your life
R
ed lipstick has been a symbol of strength for centuries. It has been worn by women to make a statement and highlight their resilience in the face of adversity. A nice coat of red lipstick is about as timeless as it gets for any makeup look. For evidence, just take a look at beauty trends season after season — red lipstick is eternal and always makes an appearance. Once you find a complementary shade of red lipstick as per your skin tone, it’s one of the best products you can incorporate to accentuate your makeup look. “To achieve bold red lips, start by applying some lip
balm to ensure that your lips are not chapped. With the help of a red lip liner, outline your lips to get that perfect lip shape. While shaping your lips, don’t stray too far outside of your natural lip line. Rather, line just slightly outside the contours of your natural lip shape, and use an angled brush to reach every little space for perfect application,” says Naveen Bhalla, Brand Trainer, of Anastasia Beverly Hills India. “Next, put on your favorite matte red lipstick with the help of a small pencil brush. Defuse any visible harsh lines of the lip liner to get seamlessly sculpted and bold red lips. This season is all about glossy lips, so top up any clear gloss at the

10 facts about antibiotic overuse A
ntibiotics revolutionized the field of medicine, saving countless lives by combating bacterial infections. However, there is one thing that has emerged as a cause of major concern. Their misuse and overuse presents a looming threat: antibiotic resistance. What is Antibiotic Resistance? Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria evolve to withstand the effects of antibiotics, which makes these medications ineffective. This phenomenon is a global threat that is the consequence of overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Resistant infections are harder to treat, leading to prolonged illnesses, increased healthcare costs, and, in some cases, higher mortality rates. This article delves into 10 crucial facts about antibiotic overuse that need attention.
1. Antibiotics Are Not Always the Answer: It is important to understand that antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections, not viral ones. Overuse of antibiotics for viral illnesses, like the common cold or flu, contributes to antibiotic resistance. Therefore their excessive use to treat viral infections must be prevented. 2. Antibiotic Resistance is a Growing Threat: Not many people are aware but the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance is a growing threat. Overusing antibiotics leads to the development of bacteria that is resistant, thus reducing the effects of antibiotics and making infections harder to treat. This global issue poses a significant threat to public health. 3. Incomplete Courses Contribute to

Resistance: One of the most important things that contributes to antibiotic resistance is not completing the antibiotic course. Not finishing a prescribed antibiotic course can leave surviving bacteria more resistant. It’s therefore crucial to complete the full course as directed by a healthcare professional. 4. Agricultural Practices Contribute to Antibiotic Resistance: Surprisingly, agricultural practices are also contributing to antibiotic resistance. This is because antibiotics are often used in agriculture for promoting animal growth. This contributes to the spread of resistant strains, affecting both animals as well as humans. 5. Emergence of Superbugs: Resistant bacteria, or “superbugs,” are evolving rapidly evolving. This is due to the overuse of antibiotics. Some strains are resistant to multiple antibiotics, complicating the treatment options. 6. Possibility of Secondary Infections Arising: Weakened by broadspectrum antibiotics, the body becomes susceptible to secondary infections like Clostridium difficile (C. diff), resulting in severe complications. 7. Individual Actions Matter: Each person’s responsible use of antibiotics can collectively contribute in combating resistance. Avoid self-
prescribing and only take antibiotics when they are prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. 8. G lobal Collaboration is important: Addressing the grave concern of antibiotic resistance requires a global effort. Cooperation between healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers, and the public is crucial for effective solutions. 9. Every festival celebration involves a distinct selection of dishes and desserts. Consuming sweets may create a nice feeling and relieve weariness, but be cautious, take adequate precautions, and be conscious of one’s necessities.
Expert tips to boost overall wellbeing this festive season
D
r Subhash S. Markande, a consulting Ayurveda physician, at CGH Earth, shares with IANSlife some principles to boost overall well-being, and benefits and find ways to incorporate them. Consume hot and fresh foods only, eat fried foods within three hours of preparation and plan your meals wisely. Drinking hot /warm water with food is always the best option to resolve many digestive issues during festivals. Consume boiled water as per individual requirements. Consuming water boiled with coriander seeds or cumin seeds will be useful to support digestion. Consume sweets in the early part of the meal, followed by sour and salt
items, backed up by foods with pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes. If you feel heavy after meals, skip the next meal; support your digestion by not loading it again and giving it time to recover. If you have a low appetite ensure that you have well-cooked and light foods on the onset of proper appetite. Maintain the gap between the meals properly; do not consume any kind of food in between meals. Consume buttermilk processed with ginger, cumin, and rock salt in the lunch which improves the gut health. Avoid sweets, milk products, and fried food in the dinner. Go for light-cooked food or some soups. Do not mix milk and milk products with vegetables or non-veg as they act antagonistic to each other. Dry fruits are a rich source of multivitamins and minerals. Hence when processed with food Items in sweets preparations will be heavy for digestion. Use dry fruits like cashews, almonds, figs, dates, raisins, lychees, walnuts, dry grapes, etc in moderation. Limit the quantity of other food while consuming sweets. All fried items are heavy for digestion and consuming them in the early part of the meal with the food is advisable (have a check on the quantity). Chew a small piece of ginger with rock salt or a pinch of jeera as it helps to avoid acid reflux. Overdoing anything is not good, so maintain a balance in food proportions, have heavy foods in less quantity and light foods in better quantity, and consume appetizers in between to balance. 4 healthy eating hacks for busy professionals
F
or busy professionals, juggling work responsibilities and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can often feel like an uphill battle. The demanding schedules, frequent meetings, and tight deadlines can make it challenging to prioritize nutritious eating.
However, with the right strategies and a little planning, it’s possible to achieve a harmonious balance. Here, we’ll explore eight healthy eating hacks tailored by Dr. Rohini Patil, MBBS, Nutritionist, to the hectic lives of professionals, enabling them to stay energized and focused on their careers without compromising their well-being. Prioritize Meal Prep: Effective meal planning is the cornerstone of healthy eating for professionals. Allocate a portion of your weekly schedule to planning and prepping meals in advance. This could mean cooking in batches, portioning meals, or even just chopping veggies for easy access. Having healthy, ready-to-eat options readily available reduces the temptation to opt for fast food or unhealthy snacks. Pack Snacks Smartly: Busy workdays often include meetings and conference calls, leaving little time for full meals. Packing smart snacks like fresh fruit, nuts, Greek yogurt, protein bar or whole-grain crackers can help you stay nourished and focused during these hectic moments. These snacks provide a quick energy boost without the guilt. Hydrate Mindfully: Staying hydrated is essential for overall well-being and productivity. Keep a reusable water bottle on your desk to encourage regular sips throughout the day. Explore herbal teas or infused water to enjoy additional flavor and potential benefits. Dehydration can sometimes be mistaken for hunger, so staying adequately hydrated can also help control unnecessary snacking. Choose Nutrient-Dense Foods: Incorporate foods that provide maximum nutrition in minimal calories. Opt for lean proteins, whole grains, and an abundance of vegetables in your meals. These foods offer essential vitamins and minerals to fuel your body and brain without causing energy slumps. Achieving a healthy work-life balance is vital for professionals, and nutrition plays a pivotal role in this equation. The eight healthy eating hacks discussed in this article are designed to empower busy individuals to make mindful food choices, improve overall well-being, and enhance their performance in the workplace. “Remember, a healthy diet isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Tailor these strategies suggested by Dr. Rohini Patil, MBBS, Nutritionist, to your unique schedule and dietary preferences. By integrating these practices into your daily routine, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a thriving career and a wellnourished, energetic, and focused you. So, fuel your success with nutritious choices,” concludes Dr. Patil.

Ancient grains for
W
hen it comes to nutrition, there’s a group of unsung heroes that have quietly sustained civilizations for millennia - millets. These unassuming, small-seeded grasses have been cultivated for both sustenance and fodder for thousands of years, silently thriving in environments where other crops falter. Members of the Poaceae family, millets have been the resilient backbone of societies across the globe, especially in regions grappling with limited water resources. From the heart of ancient civilizations to the modern dinner table, millets have traversed time and cultures. The Yajur Veda texts also identify this superfood, with Foxtail Millet being called Priyangava, Barnyard Millet being referred to as Aanava, and the Black Finger Millet brought up as Shyamala, thus indicating the consumption of the grain even during the Vedic period. These grains are more than just food; they’re ingrained in the very fabric of cultures, shaping culinary traditions that are as diverse as they are delicious. However, as the world moved toward modernization, the significance of millets seemed to dwindle. With the allure of new and exotic crops, these ancient grains fell into the shadows, waiting for their second coming. In recent years, millets have undergone a remarkable revival, thanks to their exceptional nutritional value and eco-friendly characteristics. As consumers increasingly prioritize healthier choices, these grains have emerged as nutritional superstars. The world is now

modern health rediscovering what ancient civilizations knew all along millets are not just grains; they’re a sustainable source of nourishment and a bridge between our culinary past and a healthier future. Raju Bhupathi, Founder, Troo Good, India’s largest millet snacking company, explains the significance of millets in ancient culture and their applications in the modern world:
Nutritional powerhouses of the past: The annals of time have seen the millets facilitate the transition of human beings from being predominantly hunter-gatherers to farming society. Playing a pivotal role in ancient cultures like the Indus Valley civilization and China, millets contributed to the overall nutrition and sustenance of these societies. Enriched with protein, fibre, and an array of essential vitamins and minerals, millets emerged as stalwart guardians against malnutrition and the sentinels of food security. From being used in humble flatbreads, nourishing porridges, and fermented drinks, this ancient grain’s versatility has furthered a tapestry of

cultural traditions and rituals. Apart from being nutritional powerhouses of the past, millets held economic significance in ancient trade and barter systems.
Millets in the Modern World: As modern agriculture heralded the era of highyield crops like rice and wheat, the once-potent presence of the millet faded into obscurity, changing the once cherished traditional farming practices and indigenous wisdom from our collective memory. However, in recent times the millets have revealed themselves not just as a nutritional juggernaut but also as a champion of sustainability. These hardy crops, characterized by their minimal water requirements and inherent resistance to pests and diseases, have assumed a critical role in the spotlight, offering a promising solution for sustainable agriculture and climate change adaptation. The revival of millets knows no borders. International organizations like the UN have acknowledged their potential in tackling global malnutrition and food insecurity. Consequently, millets are being embraced as vital components of humanitarian initiatives and nutrition interventions
worldwide. This revolution offers a paradigm shift in our perception of what healthy and delectable snacks can be. This resurgence breathes life into the livelihoods of farmers, vendors, and suppliers, offering economic opportunities that ripple through communities and nations.
Balancing Tradition with Innovation: In the resurgence of millets, entrepreneurs, chefs, and culinary enthusiasts are rediscovering ancient recipes, infusing them with modern flavors. The millets’ adaptability shines in contemporary cuisine, highlighting their versatility. This revival sparks a renewed interest in traditional farming, bolstering smallscale farmers and crop diversity. Governments and organizations champion millet cultivation through policies, seed subsidies, and research investments. Educational initiatives spread awareness about the millets’ nutritional and environmental benefits. The rebranding of the millet from an ancient staple to a modern superfood is a testament to their resilience and adaptability. This fullcircle moment of this wonder grain embodies the potential to address contemporary challenges like malnutrition and climate change. A kilogram of millets requires only 650-1200 liters of water, whereas up to 5000 liters of water is required to cultivate the same amount of rice, making the millet a far more viable option to grow in arid and semi-arid regions, while also being eco-friendly. As we embrace their ancient wisdom and balance it with modern innovation, production practices, and harvesting techniques, millets present an invaluable opportunity to sustain human health and the planet’s well-being for generations to come. The gut-immune system connection
D
iabetes is a global health concern affecting millions of people and burdening healthcare systems worldwide. On World Diabetes Day, it is essential to shed light on aspects that are linked to the risk of developing diabetes so that prevention and management of this chronic condition becomes more achievable. One such connection is between our gut health and the risk of developing diabetes. Recent research has unearthed a fascinating link between our gut microbiota (microbes residing in our digestive tract), the immune system, and diabetes risk. Gut Microbiota and Diabetes: A Significant Association Numerous studies have highlighted a substantial link between alterations in the makeup of gut microbiota and the onset of diabetes. To put it simply, the types and amounts of bacteria residing in our gut
can impact our risk of diabetes. Among the commonly and consistently reported findings, the genera of Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, and Roseburia have been found to be negatively associated with Type 2 Diabetes, while the genera of Ruminococcus, Fusobacterium, and Blautia have been found to be positively associated with the disease. Microbiota modulates inflammation, interacts with dietary constituents, and affects gut permeability, glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and overall energy homeostasis in the host thereby influencing the disease. The Role of Beneficial Gut Bacteria Beneficial bacteria play a protective role by decreasing the risk of diabetes development. These beneficial bacteria help reduce inflammation and maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier. For example,

‘‘guru nanak DiversiTy village, Though yeT To be ConsTruCTeD, is a TesTamenT To guru nanak Dev Ji’s values’’ In Surrey, a rapidly growing city, the need for culturally appropriate long-term care facilities is escalating. By 2039, the 65+ population is projected to grow by 144%, necessitating 1 ,500 additional care beds. With $118 million in funding from BC Housing and $5 million from the community, GNDV aims to bridge this gap. Guru Nanak Diversity Village, though yet to be constructed, is a testament to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s values.
It promises to be a beacon of cultural sensitivity, enriching the lives of its residents while preserving their heritage. For more information and to contribute, visit gurunanakdiversityvillage.ca

Lactobacillus fermentum, Roseburia intestinalis, Akkermansia muciniphila are among the friendly bacteria that have been shown to improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity while suppressing proinflammatory cytokines. In other words, they promote a healthier gut environment that is less likely to lead to diabetes. Medications and Gut Microbiota: The Metformin Connection Interestingly, certain medications used for diabetes treatment, such as metformin, have also been found to influence the composition of the gut microbiota. Metformin appears to interact with the gut microbiota by modulating short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, inflammation, glucose homeostasis (balance), and gut permeability. For example, Metformin leads to a higher relative abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila and several short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria such as Bifidobacterium bifidum. Increased shortchain fatty acids along with beneficial microbes such as Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia muciniphila may contribute to the positive effects of metformin on glucose metabolism in diabetic patients. The Link Between Gut Microbiota and Diabetic Complications This intricate relationship between gut microbiota and diabetes goes further. It turns out that the metabolic factors associated with chronic low-grade inflammation
and oxidative stress, which result from an imbalanced gut microbiota, are the same factors that influence the onset and progression of diabetic complications. This connection is crucial because it suggests that by adjusting the composition of the gut microbiota, we may find a promising strategy in the management of diabetes and its associated complications. This is where knowing our gut microbiome with gut microbiome testing kits such as BugSpeaks (India) and Viome (US) comes in handy. This means that by promoting a healthy balance of gut bacteria, we could potentially not only reduce the risk of developing diabetes but also improve the overall health and well-being of those already living with the condition. This points towards a potential avenue for developing new treatment strategies and therapies for diabetes. A Path to Better Diabetes Management On World Diabetes Day, it is essential to raise awareness of the fascinating gut-immune system connection. While diabetes is a complex condition with many factors at play, understanding how our gut microbiota can impact our risk and management of diabetes offers hope for better prevention and treatment approaches. By supporting a diverse and balanced gut microbiome through a healthy diet, probiotics, and medications, we can work towards a healthier future where the burden of diabetes is reduced. Unmasking the ingredients in your kid’s cereal
M
orning rituals and healthy breakfasts together form a tradition we pass down to our kids. But here is the twist: those seemingly virtuous cereals might contain ingredients with damaging effects that you might not be aware of. Could your child’s apparent healthy morning bowl be hiding cancer-causing ingredients? Read ahead to know more as Nupuur Patil, a nutritionist and fitness expert breaks down cereal Ingredients, which is a common breakfast in many households. Acrylamide: A Hidden Threat Acrylamide, a potentially carcinogenic (cancer-causing) compound, is formed during the cooking process of certain foods, especially those high in starch, like cereals. Acrylamide is classified as a Group 2A carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), indicating its potential carcinogenicity to humans. This underscores the importance of understanding how our food is processed and choosing products that minimize
exposure to such compounds. The Sugar Dilemma: A Sweet Conundrum One of the primary concerns associated with kids’ cereals is the high level of added sugars. Studies suggest a possible link between excessive sugar consumption and an elevated risk of certain cancers. Refined sugars contribute to inflammation and insulin resistance, creating
an environment conducive to cancer cell development. Parents are, therefore, urged to be vigilant about sugar content, opting for cereals with minimal added sugars or, better yet, exploring natural sweeteners. Artificial Colors and Flavors: A Potential Culprit Artificial colors and flavors, commonly found in children’s cereals, have raised questions about their safety. Some studies
hint at a potential connection between certain artificial colors and an increased risk of cancer. Commonly used synthetic food colorants (SFCs), such as Red 40 and Yellow 5, are under scrutiny. Choosing cereals with natural ingredients and fewer artificial additives can be a step towards reducing potential health risks. Empowering Parents: Making Informed Choices While the link between kids’ cereals and cancer is not conclusively proven, parents can empower themselves by making informed choices. Opting for cereals with minimal added sugars, natural ingredients, and no artificial additives, as well as being mindful of GMOs and pesticides, can contribute to a healthier diet for children. As parents, our choices play a pivotal role in shaping our children’s health. By staying informed and making conscious decisions about the cereals we provide, we can contribute to a healthier future for our kids. Prioritizing whole, nutrient-rich foods and minimizing exposure to potential carcinogens is a significant step towards fostering well-being and safeguarding our children’s health. By: IANS

depression in adults Continued from last edition... Depression symptoms in older adults Depression is not a normal part of growing older, and it should never be taken lightly. Unfortunately, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated in older adults, and they may feel reluctant to seek help. Symptoms of depression may be different or less obvious in older adults, such as: Memory difficulties or personality changes 4Physical aches or pain 4 Fatigue, loss of appetite, sleep problems or loss of interest in sex — not caused by a medical condition or medication 4 Often wanting to stay at home, rather than going out to socialize or doing new things 4 Suicidal thinking or feelings, especially in older men Causes 4 It’s not known exactly what causes depression: As with many mental disorders, a variety of factors may be involved, such as: 4 Biological differences. People with depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. The significance of these changes is still uncertain, but may eventually help pinpoint causes. 4 Brain chemistry: Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring brain chemicals that likely play a role in depression. Recent research indicates that changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. 4 Hormones: Changes in the body’s balance of hormones may be involved in causing or triggering depression. Hormone changes can result with pregnancy and during the weeks or months after delivery (postpartum) and from thyroid

problems, menopause or a number of other conditions. 4 Inherited traits: Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have this condition. Researchers are trying to find genes that may be involved in causing depression. Risk factors 4 Depression often begins in the teens, 20s or 30s, but it can happen at any age. More women than men are diagnosed with depression, but this may be due in part because women are more likely to seek treatment. Factors that seem to increase the risk of developing or triggering depression include:
of depression, bipolar disorder, alcoholism or suicide. Tiger 3: Salman and Katrina’s powerful punches save this entertaining actioner Duration: 156 minutes Director: Maneesh Sharma Writers: Shridhar Raghavan, Anckur Chaudhry, Aditya Chopra Stars: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Emraan Hashmi IANS Rating: *** ‘Tiger 3’ continues the saga of YRF’s spy universe, with the same old premise of a highly motivated terrorist harbouring an utterly misplaced idea of patriotism. Shridhar Raghavan’s story
serves as a canvas for director Maneesh Sharma to put up a high-octane action show that weaves the elements of duty, personal sacrifice, and patriotism. Bhai fans can rejoice, as he looks fresh and back in perfect form. He goes all out performing dare-devil stunts that not only defy death and gravity but also logic. Nonetheless, it’s a fullblown visual spectacle The narrative is packed with constant thrills, and
plot twists, many of them predictable but snackable too. Anay Goswamy’s breathtaking cinematography deftly captures the scale of this globe-trotting espionage saga that seamlessly travesses across Europe, Russia, Istanbul, India and Pakistan.
established spy movie tropes, ‘Tiger 3’ navigates a delicate balance between showcasing patriotism and overdramatizing it. The timely cameo by Shahrukh Khan as Pathaan, is integrated seamlessly into the story. It’s sure to hit home with the fans of both the Khans.
Emraan Hashmi shines as the ruthless antagonist, Aatish, despite a very clichéd characterisation that lacks conviction. While the film leans on familiar spy genre elements, inspired by Hollywood hits and many Bollywood blockbusters, it ensures there’s no dearth of adrenaline-pumping action sequences. This time though, the film’s leading lady Katrina Kaif gets a welldefined character arc with a convincing backstory, a solid motive and context. Katrina pulls off an action-heavy role with ease, kicking some serious butt. Her fight scene in towel with Asian American actress Michelle Lee is nicely done.
This time around, Pritam’s music falls short of leaving a lasting impact. The writing tends to portray Pakistan as the perennial antagonist without delving into nuanced motivations and the complex geo-political landscape of the continent. The dialogues lack the punch to evoke constant applause and seetis from Bhai fans. Despite such heavy dependence on VFX, ‘Tiger 3’ lacks the required finesse in many scenes, much like its jarring background score (by Tanuj Tiku). The swift pacing makes up for many a flaws, with a taut edit by Rameshwar S. Bhagat.
Despite its expected storyline and reliance on

5 best Christmas movies of all time
From silly Santas to fun in the snow, here’s our pick of some of the best Christmas films ever
C
hristmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and Christmas movies are part of that as much as any lit-up pine tree or jolly fat man.
No matter how much of a cynical, hardcore cineaste you think you are, there’s at least one holiday-themed flick that instantly transports you back to childhood and fills you with warm, fuzzy memories of childhood – like a cup of hot cocoa for the soul. Here’s the thing, though: sure, most Christmas movies are fluffy exercises in nostalgia, imparting messages about the importance of showing goodwill toward your fellow man, wrapped up with a tinge of innocent consumerism… but not all of them. Here are a few movie options that you can watch and celebrate Christmas! 1. It’s a wonderful life (1946) Tinged with magical passages, buckets of good will and an alternate plotline with the disturbing kick of a Black Mirror episode, this tribute to the efforts of a small-town
do-gooder (James Stewart, in his most beloved role) cements the idea of Christmas as a time for giving. 2. Gremlins (1984) Plenty of Christmas presents come with instructions, yet none are as ominous as the following: Never expose to bright light, never add water and, crucially, never feed after midnight. Joe Dante’s horror-comedy turns a well-intentioned gift into a nightmare. Meanwhile, a traumatised Phoebe Cates tells the saddest Christmas story ever. 3. Elf (2003) Will Ferrell’s overgrownchild persona hilariously
in the title role, manages to stretch that premise much further than it should go, and also generates some genuine Christmas warmth through his unlikely friendship with a bullied kid unfortunately named Thurman Merman.
complements this comedy about a guileless giant elf searching for his dad in NYC, but the film’s focus isn’t just on the funny bone. There’s an abundance of heart and soul in the way the story cherishes holiday cheer; in a genre that’s become generically saccharine, this is one modern Christmas movie that’s genuinely sweet. 4. Bad Santa (2003) Admittedly, this yuletide raunch-fest subsists on a single joke, and it’s basically ‘guy in a Santa suit swears a lot’. But Billy Bob Thornton,
5. Home Alone (1990) John Hughes penned this rollicking holiday classic that essentially plays like Straw Dogs for children. No matter that everybody’s on the naughty list here, from Catherine O’Hara’s woefully neglectful mom to Macaulay Culkin’s sadistic moppet and Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci’s vindictive crooks. Once the John Williams score kicks in, even the coldest hearts will warm and the most lifealtering concussions will heal. By: IANS

riti Sanon, who will soon be seen alongside Shahid Kapoor in a yet to be titled film, insists that the latter’s fashion sense is underrated. Shahid is one of the best-dressed men today, said Kriti, who won the National Award this year for her performance in ‘Mimi’. The actress has a list of films in her kitty and in a candid conversation she spoke about working with Kajol, how she has changed over the years, and who according to her is the most well-dressed man in the Industry. Talking about whose fashion sense she likes the most, she said, “Hrithik is someone whom I have loved always. I also love Tiger’s fashion
sense. But I feel Shahid Kapoor’s fashion sense is so underrated. “I think he is so well-dressed. He is one of the best dressed men today. He puts everything so effortlessly, and I have told this to him as well. I love that he wears colors. I am very excited for our film to release. We share great chemistry in the film. I am really fond of him.” Sharing her experience of working with Kajol once again in ‘Do Patti’, she said, “When I worked with Kajol mam in ‘Dilwale’, I was very naive. We hardly shot together. This time we broke the ice and we have a lot more powerful scenes together. I had a great time working with her. “

even memory. The symptoms will first appear to be of a mild state; however, they will progress with time and unfortunately worsen and become more severe. This process is known as ‘Cognitive Decline’. The signs of this condition are anxiety, restlessness, not wishing to play anymore, slow to learn new training, disorientation, decreased grooming, confusion, forgetting previous training, no control over urinating or defecating, sleep patterns altered, decreased appetite, excessive licking, frustration and barking. According to statistics, it is seen that at least one out of every three dogs that are over the age of ten will display at least one sign of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If you feel that your dog may be showing any of these signs, then your veterinarian can perform a full physical examination. He or she will also need a full history of when the symptom(s) initially presented themselves, in order to conduct a proper diagnosis of this condition. Other diagnostic measures may also be performed in order to rule out any other underlying causes for such exhibiting signs. Canines that are diagnosed with Dog Dementia will then begin a long-term treatment of supportive care for this condition. Such care will consist of improving your dog’s living environment and health in order to maintain an ideal
condition for improvement. This will allow the Cognitive Decline to be delayed and not progress as quickly otherwise. Changes in exercise routine, playing time and also training, or needing to train again, will be introduced as well. Other adjustments that can be made to facilitate a dog with this condition is to provide night lights for your canine companion to navigate throughout the house easier in the dark. Place training pads near your dog so that there is a place for him or her to use the washroom in case of an emergency, where they cannot control their urination or bowel movement. Certain medications or behavioral treatments may also be advised by your veterinarian based on the individual case of your pet. Diet is also a key component to managing a better lifestyle. Certain supplements can also be added to the diet regiment in order to help with your dog’s cognitive function. Such as: Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta Carotene, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Omega-3 and Carnitine. Followup appointments with your veterinarian may be needed regularly.

Paul Rudd opens up on ‘very restrictive’ diet while preparing for ‘Ant-Man’ A ctor Paul Rudd had to undergo a very strict, regulated and restrictive diet in order to build his physique for playing Scott Lang in ‘Ant-Man’ films.
During a recent appearance on the ‘Off Menu’ podcast, where guests talk about their ‘dream menu’, the show’s hosts Ed Gamble and James Acaster asked the actor what type of water he preferred to which he gave an amusing reply. Rudd said: “When I was having to train for the ‘Ant-Man’ movie, and I was on a very restrictive diet, my reward was sparkling water. That’s how horrible that diet was. I was like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna have some sparkling water now, I’ve earned it’.”
The actor said that during his rigorous training to get him all ripped up, and in proper shape, as a reward he would have a lot of ‘sparkling water’, reports Hollywood Reporter.
He said, “Once you’re in it, it’s actually not too hard,” adding that he didn’t mind having “really boring food, every time, over and over again”, especially since he would wake up with “tons of energy”.
‘The 40-year old virgin’ star added: “I remember on ‘Endgame’, Chris Hemsworth would always have these Tupperware containers and he’s eating this gruel of just a mash of stuff.
Asked whether the other MCU actors would ‘take notes’ from each other while training for working on their ensemble films, such as ‘Captain America: Civil War’, and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Rudd said, “I mean, I think people kind of are. But I also think I worked out harder than anyone, I would eat better than everyone, and I looked worse than all of them.
“He’s working out, and then you stand next to a guy like that, and I just think, ‘Well, what’s the point of any of this?’ Why am I killing myself when that can exist, and then I look at myself and this exists. I can never achieve that. … That was the good thing that it was Ant-Man, it wasn’t Thor. But I tried to work out, and it didn’t work.”
I had to work out all the time, eat perfectly, just to look kind of bad. Not even great.”
By: IANS
Acaster proceeded to ask him if it actually felt like a treat, to which Rudd responded: “Yeah, it was great. It wasn’t flavoured, I wasn’t gonna go crazy.” The former ‘Friends’ actor added that he mostly stuck to the same diet and training regimen for all his Marvel movies.

“Israel is the only country in the world that keeps CHILDREN AS PRISONERS OF WAR. ABDUCTION. RAPE. HUMILIATION. TORTURE. MURDER OF PALESTINIANS. YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. BEFORE Oct 7 2023,” Gigi wrote in a now-deleted post. Gigi also reshared a post claiming that “Israel authorities detain an average of 500 - 700 Palestinian children every year.” The post added that the children were “beaten,” “strip searched,” “arrested at night” and “isolated in solitary confinement.” In the next slide, Gigi pointed out that “Israel is the ONLY country in the world that systematically prosecutes minors in military courts and accepts confessions obtained by coercion.” Not stopping there, the sister of Bella Hadid told her almost 80 million followers, “Israel sees any Palestinian as a ‘terrorist,’ any person supporting Palestinian rights as ‘antisemite,’ and any Jew that is opposed to the government’s actions as ‘self-hating’ - even telling them to denounce their Judaism. So… everyone is lying and wrong, except Israel?! If it isn’t evil and disturbing, it would be comedic.” Both Gigi and Bella are vocal supporters for Palestine amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle Eastern countries. Bella even said that her family got death threats for supporting Palestine, writing on Instagram, “I’ve been sent hundreds of death threats daily, my phone number has been leaked, and my family has felt to be in danger. But I cannot be silenced any longer. Fear is not an option. The people and children of Palestine, especially in Gaza, cannot afford our silence. We are not brave - they are.” In her statement, Bella added, “We need to keep pressure on our leaders, wherever we are, not to forget the urgent needs of the people of Gaza, and to ensure that innocent Palestinian civilians are not the forgotten casualties of this war.” She concluded, “I stand with humanity, knowing that peace and safety belong to us all.” By: IANS

Get some adrenaline rush
I
n the heart of adventure lies a world beyond the familiar, where thrill-seekers forge their own paths, discovering hidden treasures in the realm of bungee jumping. While the towering heights of famous sites like New Zealand’s Nevis Highwire or the USA’s Navajo Bridge have their welldeserved acclaim, there exists a tapestry of lesser-known, adrenaline-pumping gems scattered across the globe. These unsung marvels of the bungee world beckon intrepid souls with promises of uncharted excitement, weaving tales of gravity-defying leaps amidst breathtaking, untouched landscapes. From the misty jungles of Costa Rica to the cascading waters of Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, this is an exploration of the offbeat, a journey into the lesser-trodden territories of bungee jumping, where the thrill knows no bounds, and the view is always extraordinary. Jumpin Heights, Rishikesh, India A decade ago, who would’ve thought that a quaint town in India would become synonymous with Bungy jumping? With the intention to revolutionize how organizational safety is perceived in India, Jumpin Heights was born. The price point was kept keeping Indians in mind, and not the foreign tourists as one might have expected for one of the world’s most extreme sports. The world over, adventure sports are a way of weaving nature
44
into a travelers’ experience. Adventure is a novel way of exploring a landscape and India has always had ample to boast of, but that has missed out on recognition for lack of marketing and commercialization. Jumpin Heights set up a unique bungy experience nestled amidst the Himalayan ranges, a 45-minute drive away from Lakshman Jhula, in Mohanchatti village, to not just showcase the natural beauty of our land, but to offer an experience for the jumpers to become one with it. For over a decade, this was India’s only bungy location and therefore has an unrivaled experience of operating over 1,50,000 jumps safely, a record for adventure tourism in India. To this day, it is India’s most extreme bungy experience. As local as it gets, with the best practices globally. Extremo Park, Monteverde, Costa Rica Situated at an impressive altitude of 143 meters, this stands as the highest bungee jumping spot in all of Latin America. What sets it apart, however, is the unique experience of taking your plunge from a tram suspended by a cable over the expanse of the Central American cloud forests. Navigating through this verdant terrain may seem like a maze, yet within its embrace, you’re bound to uncover a new facet of yourself. Leaping over the canopy of this untamed, virgin forest amid invigorating winds and misty conditions is an adventure that should not be missed when in Costa Rica. The journey from San Jose to Monteverde offers flexible

transportation options, be it through private arrangements or shared services, ensuring accessibility for all. Victoria Falls Bridge, Zimbabwe Perched above the awe-inspiring Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls Bungee promises an unparalleled adventure for thrill-seekers like you. As you descend a staggering 364 feet amidst the roaring cascade, the spray from the falls envelops you, creating a wild, exhilarating sensation. It’s an intimate yet secure encounter that every adventure enthusiast should consider. Accessible from both Zimbabwe and Zambia, the Victoria Falls Bridge serves as a vital link between the two nations. Opting for a cab proves to be the most efficient and swift mode of transportation to reach this spectacular site. Alternatively, for those seeking an authentic experience, public buses departing from terminal stations are also available. Volcano Bungee, Pucon, Chile Embarking on this adventure promises an experience unlike any other – a truly extraordinary and thrilling endeavor! In Pucon, you’ll ascend a staggering 10,000 feet into the sky, only to take a heartpounding plunge towards the molten lava, descending an astounding 375 feet. As you come to a halt, you’ll find yourself suspended a mere 700 feet from the active volcano, creating an unparalleled adrenaline rush. Undoubtedly, Pucon ranks amongst the most exhilarating

and fear-inducing bungee jump destinations worldwide. To reach Pucon, the optimal route is to catch a flight from San Tiago International Airport to Temuku, from where you can arrange for a helicopter transfer to your ultimate bungee jumping destination. Kolnbrein Dam, Carinthia, Austria For those seeking a slightly less daunting but equally thrilling option compared to Europabrüke, the Kolnbrein Bridge presents itself as an excellent alternative. Here, you can take a heart-pounding 169-meter leap from one of the world’s highest bungee jumping sites. What truly amplifies this experience are the awe-inspiring vistas that greet you as you leap – the imposing dam and the sprawling forests. Nestled at the meeting point of the river Malta and Lieser, you can enjoy frequent and hassle-free transportation options from Carinthia Station. Both buses and private taxis operate between these locations, providing convenient access to this adrenaline-pumping site. Finishing Off In the world of bungee jumping, we’ve uncovered a tapestry of extraordinary experiences, each offering its own unique blend of thrill and natural wonder. From towering heights to heartpounding plunges, these destinations beckon the adventurous spirit. Whether you find yourself amidst cloud-kissed forests or overlooking majestic valleys, each jump promises an unforgettable encounter with nature’s raw beauty. So, which of these adrenaline-pumping journeys will you embark on? The choice is yours, and the adventure awaits. By: IANS

Hanukkah – the festival of lights Hanukkah is often portrayed as the Jewish version of Christmas as both these festivals are celebrated around the same time in the year, but in reality, they are very different. Hanukkah dates back over 2,000 years and is a commemoration of the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after the victory of the Maccabees around 165 BCE. Hanukkah is considered a festival of lights: candles are lit for eight nights, families eat foods cooked with oil and exchange presents.
fixed, but they do always fall in December. This year, Hanukkah will begin on the evening of December 10 and end on December 18. Hanukkah lasts for eight days and nine nights, and each night after sunset, family and friends will gather to light a nine-branched candelabrum with candles called a hanukkiah (or a Hanukkah Menorah). A candle is lit each night, songs are sung, and prayers are said, after which everyone shares a traditional meal.

Populartraditions holiday in Canada
T
here are certain customs and traditions that are synonymous with the holiday season in Canada – some you may have heard of broadly, others might seem new or have a Canadian touch to it. Here’s a look at five popular holiday traditions: 1. Holiday shopping and exchanging gifts The holiday season is incomplete without shopping and gifts. Exchanging holiday cards and gifts is a tradition in Canada. A fun spin on exchanging gifts is the Secret Santa game. A quick online search will reveal many variations of this game exist. Generally speaking, it is an arrangement where a group of friends or colleagues are randomly assigned a person, to whom they give a gift, typically costing no more than a set amount. The identity of the gift giver is kept a secret and isn’t revealed. Another holiday custom is exchanging Christmas crackers as party favors. They are borrowed from the U.K. Christmas traditions. Generally, a cracker is placed next to each plate on the Christmas dinner table. When the two sides of the wrapper are pulled, it makes a small popping sound and a colorful party hat, a toy, or gift, and a festive joke falls out of the cracker. For those celebrating Hanukkah, there’s a tradition of giving coins or even bills, called Hanukkah Gelt. If families don’t wish to hand over money to children, they have an option of gifting chocolate Hanukkah Gelt. Many Canadians open their gifts on Christmas Eve. Some will only open one gift or the gifts from their stockings on Christmas Eve and save others for Christmas Day. 2. Decorating the Christmas tree Christmas trees are usually evergreen, the only trees that are still green by the time the winter has arrived. The most popular Christmas trees in Canada fall into the pine, fir, or spruce families. These are not only supplied locally but are also exported. The Christmas tree is a key physical

symbol of Christmas worldwide. It signifies life, longevity, light in the darkest time, and magical powers during the deepest winter. Most families in Canada will set up a Christmas tree at home and decorate it with various ornaments such as garlands, baubles, tinsel, and candy canes. An angel or star might be placed at the top of the tree to represent the Angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem, respectively. Edible items such as gingerbread, chocolate and other sweets are also popular and are tied to or hung from the tree’s branches with ribbons. Gifts are placed at the foot of the Christmas tree. 3. Relishing holiday food Canadians celebrate Christmas with special meals including eggnog, roast turkey, seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Traditional Christmas desserts are reminiscent of U.K. classics like Christmas plum puddings and mincemeat tarts. A rich fruit Christmas cake is also a Christmas favourite. Canada is a melting pot of many cultures, and many have their own traditional Christmas foods that they indulge in during the holidays. Canadian Ukrainian families, for instance, will have their traditional 12 meal dishes for Christmas. Some French families are known to attend the midnight mass and then have a huge feast or party on Christmas Eve called a Réveillon that goes on into the early hours of Christmas morning. The traditional Christmas meal for people residing in Quebec is a stew called ragoût aux pattes de cochons made from pig’s feet. However, many people now have an ourtière, a meat pie made from venison (or pork or beef). Christmas cookie-baking parties among Canadian families are very common. Each family uses their own recipe to bake the cookies and then exchanges them with other families. Gingerbread people and houses are also holiday favorites, along with cheese straws. At the end of the party, each family goes home with a variety of different cookies to enjoy over

the Christmas season. Those celebrating Hanukkah will prepare a Hanukkah feast, which includes potato latkes (pronounced as lot-kuh) and crispy potato pancakes, served with applesauce or sour cream. Jelly doughnuts are also a popular dessert. In some provinces, the Inuit (natives or First Nations indigenous people of Canada) celebrate Sinck Tuck. This celebration consists of dancing and gift exchanging; it is linked to their winter solstice celebration. Their meals include caribou, raw fish, seal, and other foods that are native to the area. 4. Attending holiday events and parades The holiday season is one of the most festive times of the year in Canada. Christmas parades, light shows, and other festive markets are popular holiday attractions in various cities across the nation. Christmas parades are held in November and December. Some are massive-scale parades and are very well-known in Canada, while others are organized on a smaller scale and are more local. For example, Toronto’s Santa Claus Parade is one of the oldest and largest Santa parades in the world. This large-scale event consists of over 25 animated floats, various marching bands, and over 2000 people and is broadcast on television globally. Similarly, Vancouver has the Rogers Santa Claus Parade that many people attend. Lights festivals are also popular. Some of the popular ones are the Winter Festival of Lights at Niagara Falls, the VanDusen Festival of Light in Vancouver, and the Aurora Winter Festival held in Vancouver and Toronto. 5. Giving back to the community Giving back and volunteering is a way of life in Canada and is usually wellregarded and valued in Canadian society. Many Canadians join in the holiday spirit by giving back in cash or kind or both. According to Statistics Canada, in 2018, over 12.7 million people (41 per cent of Canadians aged 15 and older) volunteered for charities, non-profits and community
