Sandeep Ahuja: A first generation Entrepreneur Extraordinaire
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
A
s I went to see Sandeep Ahuja in his huge and tidy office, I was at ease with the aura his office was exhibiting. After basic courtesies were over, this President of Punjab Insurance Agency was almost ready in his cozy office for a maiden interface. Now, this lanky, 48 years young Scorpion- was hurriedly getting settled in the chair- looking pre-occupied on the fringe and searching for his immigrant past of two decades as he landed in Canada in Ontario Province -in the year 1998- to find his success story. Like almost everyone, he made a humble beginning to pay his bills. Being a Restaurateur, back home in India at Chandigarh, he joined the industry as a waiter so that he can understand the tricks of the trade as well as trade. Soon he realized that this field may not be his cup of tea as a businessman over here. Then he met Sr. Bachhiter Singh Mehmi, who suggested him to join Bank service, as opportunities were available. When asked why he joined RBC as Insurance Advisor, he stated with a huge pause,” I thought I can successfully do that keeping in view my strengths i.e. I like people around me. Moreover, I was foreknowing this to start my own business in the insurance field in near future.” It will not be out of place to mention that he left RBC after two years’ service and opened his independent Brokerage. Being destined, he met S. Sher Singh Rana and both started this present venture - in 2006 - under the name and style of Punjab Insurance Agency Inc. While Rana takes care of Toronto office, Sandeep manages the Surrey Office. When asked, how much confident he was to foresee his Insurance business will be a roaring success. He quipped,”

Startups have always been hard and that too by a first-generation entrepreneur; looking to find his moorings on a foreign land. The entrepreneur who wins is the one that bridges customers to the future, through his product(s). “If you really believe that you have something amazing to share with the world (and there is a market for it), then go for it as the risk is a calculated one.” His Unique Selling Point (USP) is to dole out best customer service to his clients in succession. Towards ocular proof, he has an in-house Claims Assistance Department for fast processing of claims. On family front, he is youngest among the four siblings. Two of his elderly brothers are in Insurance business too- in Canada. As they say, behind every successful man there is a woman, his wife Rashmi Ahuja, also an insurance advisor, is actively engaged in this business. With God’s grace & their hard work, they have shaped this business as a successful venture. They are blessed with three children namely Abhinav (16 years), Simone (12 years), and Tesoro (1 year). On hobbies front, he loves playing Badminton and go for a long drive with his nuclear family. When asked where he sees himself in the next 10 years, pat came the reply,”I want to keep serving our community to the best of my ability”.
Make your team feel respected, empowered and genuinely excited about the company’s mission. Micromanage the process, not the people.

How to choose jewellery to
gift for V-Day
Look out for quality and style while keeping in mind the budget before selecting jewellery as a gift on Valentine's Day. 4Quality: When you are gifting something like jewellery, quality matters a lot because you can't afford to let these pricey gifts of yours get broken in a day or two. Do a research on how to check quality of precious metals and stones, before going through the stores. When in a store, remember to ask for documents proving authentication of jewels, like diamond certificates. 4Style: When you have decided to gift jewellerey to your Valentine,
then make sure you have clear cut and exact knowledge of their style and taste. Do a detailed observation of what gemstones or metal types she likes to have and in which size or style she loves to have them. If she has a favourite designer, brand or store, then prefer going there only to buy something special for your love. 4Budget: You should have a set price range in your mind. This will help you in selecting your special piece without wasting much time and effort. Don't set
the exact price number, but select a range from which you can flexibly go up and down. Sticking to budget is important for overall satisfaction with the jewellery. 4Significance: While selecting a particular piece of jewellery, make sure that you have clarity in mind on why you bought only that particular thing. Remember, gifting any random expensive jewellery piece will not make your partner special, but if you gift her a simple and not so costly jewellery piece with a beautiful reason, it will surely make her feel
loved. 4Expert advice: If you are an amateur in buying jewellery, then drop the idea of going alone. It is advised to take a person with great taste and knowledge with you to keep yourself on the safer side. If you don't have such an expert by your side, then opt for renowned jewellery stores as their salespersons will help you out in best possible way by clearing all your doubts and confusions.
Woo your date with
perfect looks Having trouble figuring out your perfect look for this Valentine's Day? Girls can opt for lighter and neutral tones for the day and go for smokey or glitter eyes for the night look. 4Day Date: Fresh and dewy is the way to go this year for a day out or brunch date. Keeping it simple and as fresh as possible, is the key here. Using lighter and neutral tones helps add to natural beauty.
no kohl. Lips: Soft colours are best for day time. Soft pinks, peaches and corals are the most common choices. Try a lip scrub before applying any lip colour for a smooth finish. Cheeks: The last but the cutest touch -- just a hint of peach or pink blush will brighten your face.
See how you can achieve an easy day wear look: Eyes: Lash the eyes mildly, not over-dramatically. It's best to keep the twinkle of your eye intact instead of overshadowing it with dark or shiny eye shadows. Glitter is a big no-no. A sharp lining of eyeliner highlights the lids. You may choose from black or brown coloured eyeliners. Opt for less or
4Night Date: Glam it up for the night. Be it for a party or a quiet sit-down candlelit dinner, nights are all about dressing up to impress. 4Eyes: Opt for smokey eyes or glitter lids. Lashes with heavy mascara look beautiful. Perfectly winged eyeliner adds to the drama. 4Lips: For bright lips, shades of berry reds are trending the most. If you are not a person who likes red, you can also choose from hot or dark pink lip colours. Matte is the way to go with all shades this season. 4Don't go overboard. Try to keep either the eyes heavy or the lips. 4Use some bronzer over the blush, to highlight the cheekbones. Courtesy: timesofindia

He enters the screen, dramatically, shoes first, kicking butt in a crowded bazaar; with his trade-mark checked scarf around his neck. He ambushes a handful of traitors singlehandedly in a long-drawn high octane action sequence that is clearly inspired by Jason Bourne(Bourne Identity/Supremacy series) and James Bond (Quantum of Solace). Mission one successfully completed Tiger returns home to a middle-class neighbourhood in New Delhi. Barely have his wounds from Iraq healed when his boss, Girish Karnad, (impressive performance) packs him of to Ireland to spy on a professor (Roshan Seth) who may be trading missile technology secrets with Pakistan. Kat is a secret agent for the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence); she owes allegiance to India’s archenemy Pakistan. Post interval, ETT goes on to focus on the Tiger-Zoya romance. Since they have unfinished business, the plot allows them to lock eyes at a peace summit in Istanbul. Passions are rekindled. This time they let their own feelings rule and elope. Chased by their own people and the enemy, the couple traipse in Cuba and other foreign locales, riding bikes and cuddling up while some lack-lustre songs play in the backdrop. One must say there is nothing raw about the Kat-Sallu romance in ETT; it’s synthetic. onakshi Sinha has been keeping quite busy. The actor currently has five films in her kitty, and she’s quite excited about the amount of work coming her way. “Work wise, 2018 is looking amazing. Welcome To New York and Happy Bhag Jayegi Returns (both comedies) were a lot of fun, and then Dabangg 3 when its makers are ready to roll. Two more films are yet to be announced. Personally, I want to improve myself every
way I can and find happiness in whatever I do,” says the actor. Sonakshi is currently in an experimental phase — after a thriller last year, she will soon be seen in a stage reality film (co-starring Diljit Dosanjh). “Not just my career, I think the industry is going through a phase where risks are being accepted. So it’s a great time to be trying different things. It also keeps you engaged as an actor,” she adds.

alman’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ to release in China. Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s blockbuster “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” will release in China on March 2, making it the actor’s first film to hit the screens in the country.Eros International, in association with Chinese film company E Stars Films Ltd, will release the movie in China during the Chinese Lantern Festival, according to a statement issued on Monday. Dubbed in Chinese, the film is expected to get a wide release across 8,000-plus screens, the statement said.Directed by Kabir Khan, “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” stars Salman as Bajrangi, an ardent devotee of Hindu deity Hanuman, and his arduous journey to reunite a six-year-old Pakistani girl — who somehow gets lost in India — with her parents, back to her hometown in Pakistan. Given the success of Indian film releases in China, the studio and the makers are confident of the movie’s box office potential in China, one of more promising international markets for Indian films. Jyoti Deshpande, Group CEO, Eros International, said: “China has emerged as an important market and major box office earner for Indian films in recent years, what with the recent success of ‘Dangal’. We are delighted to partner with E Stars to showcase our film to China.”Our IndoChina co-productions are still in the making which we are extremely excited about. Recognising the significant market opportunity in China, Eros and director Kabir Khan are once again coming together for a travel drama, “The Zookeeper” (working title) under its franchise studio Trinity. He wrote, “This year #October is coming April and will stay with you forever #October13thApril #oc-
toberinapril.” Set to a breezy background score, the video gives us glimpses of lush-green mountains of Himachal Pradesh and Sircar’s favourite bylanes of Delhi, as we hear Varun Dhawan’s voice announcing “this year October is coming in April”. In the clip, we also see few pictures of Banita and a couple of pictures featuring both Varun and Banita. Helmed by Shoojit Sircar, the movie is slated to hit theatres on April 13. Courtsey: ANI

The Eyes Don’t Lie
-Reading People by Eye Movements remembering a poem or a particular noise. If you ask someone to think about the sound of their house door bell they should look to the right.
Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
Eyes Down and Right (1st person down-left) Someone that is talking to themselves or thinking about what they are about to say next will look down and to the right. When we ask someone how a conversation went and they will look down and to the right.
T
he eyes never lie, even when the lips do so. Though experts on the subject beg to differ in their opinions, yet some emphatically say that when a person lies, the hole in the middle of the iris of the eye becomes bigger. Generally, it is said that we can judge people by watching their pupils. In case their pupils dilate or if they look up and to the left when answering/telling a story, they are lying. Hence, the eyes don’t lie. It means that you can judge anything from a person’s eyes. You can tell, what they are saying is true or total bullshit. If they aren’t saying anything, you can tell if they are attracted to you or are repulsed by you. You don’t have to think about it. You’ll just know by your inner instinct. I’ve heard this expression being used in succession. As per research, your eyes will position themselves according to the thoughts that are in your head. By watching your eyes other people can often tell what you are thinking and if you are lying or not. Professional poker players know that your eyes can be a dead giveaway. Most of these professional players are very good at reading body language and are keen at reading them. They also tend to wear sunglasses, ball-caps and other accessories on their faces to hide their eyes movement. When people shift eyes: Shifty eyes have been thought to be a sign of disinterest or that a
Check people by their class and not by their behavior. Because behavior is temporary and class is permanent. Behavior is manageable, and class is not. It is during the behavior drill that body language plays a role wherein eyes reflect a truthful state of mind though exceptions may be there. Those who are trained in this craft, their eyes may be misleading or we are not amply trained to read between the lines or should I say between the eyes.”

We all see the saddest people wear the biggest smiles. They try to hide their emotions by masking a fake smile. Those who develop the reading acumen over a period of time, do better to read people by judging their eye behaviour.” person is lying, but new evidence suggests the involuntary movement occurs when people try and access their long-term memory.Shifty eyes now have been thought to signify a person’s problem telling the truth. What research says on this: The researchers determined that lying requires more work than telling the truth, so they look for cues that the subject is working hard. For example, a person who is being dishonest may have dilated pupils and take longer to read and answer the questions. These reactions are often minute and require sophisticated measurement methods and statistical support to determine their significance. Many psychologists believe that when a person looks up to their right they are likely to be telling a lie. Glancing up to the left, on the other hand, is said to indicate honesty. But the experts are wrong, according to Professor Wiseman and his team of researchers, who tested whether eyes really can reveal According to the theory, when right-handed people look up to their right they are likely to be visualizing a “constructed”, or imagined, event. In contrast when they look to their left they are likely to be visualizing a what is known as a “remembered” memory. For this reason, when liars are constructing their own version of the truth, they tend to look to the right. A large percentage of the public believes that certain eye movements
are a sign of lying, and this idea is even taught in various programs. Though present research conclusions in some cases do not support this idea. The behavior of the eyes is fairly predictable, someone will make eye contact with you and during the conversation they take a moment to think. For this brief moment while they access information in their brain, and their eyes will move to a predictable position. Different Eye positions meaning defined as follows: Straight Eyes Straight eyes, with a constant look means that the person is interested with the conversation. A long eye contact means that the person is intimidating you or the person may not be believing you. A short eye contact means that the person is not interested in the conversation anymore. Eyes Looking Up Eyes looking up sometimes means insult, sarcasm, boredom and distraction. If someone do this to you, this is not a good sign. Sometimes a person’s eyes looking up is to pray to God, but in some cases, it means the person is looking down on you rather. Eyes in the Upper Right (1st person upper-left) When someone moves their eyes up and right it means that they are accessing the visual part of their memory by referring to the limbic system in the Central Nervous System of the brain. In this person’s head they are visualizing objects, colors, movements, and other visual information that pertains to your conversation. If you want to see someone do this a good question to ask them is, “what color of clothes you like?” Eyes to the Middle Right (1st person left) Moving the eyes directly to the right is a sign that they are accessing the auditory part of their memory. The person could be
Eyes Up and Left (1st person upright) Looking up and to the left allows someone to access the visual part of their imagination. This person is constructing a picture in their head. If you ask someone to imagine a green sky with red clouds they should look up and to the left. Eyes to the Middle Left (1st person right): A person looking directly to the left is constructing sounds in their head. They may be imagining what an unheard voice sounds like, or putting together a new melody. Ask someone to image the sound of an ambulance and they will likely look to the left. Eyes Down and Left (1st person down-right) When thinking about their feelings someone will look down and left. Often when people say “I feel…” They will glance down and left, and you can know they are actually thinking about how they feel at that time. Eyes Looking Down A person looking down means that he is feeling uncomfortable. A person sometimes looking down when they are awfully shy and don’t want to start a conversation. Moving the eyes down is a sign of something shameful. In some part of Asian culture there’s a custom to look down and not make eye contact when speaking to some elders and respectable people. Bottom line: Few experts say that somepeople, can physically keep eye contact when lying. They look to the left or right whilst lying. It has Been PROVEN thateven awelltrained person can beat the polygraph machine by simply controlling his/her vital signs like breathing and other techniques. Eye movement such as twitching, looking away, looking down etc. are all key indicators that someone is lying, or has something to hide. Eyes usually are the windows to the soul, though actions/ gestures speak very loudly.Supposedly people don’t make direct eye contact when they are lying but that’s not a 100% effective way for telling if someone is lying. Mind it.

5 ways to wear a pocket square that every man should know
F
or the past four decades, if men regarded the breast pocket on their suit at all, it was as an extra place to store sunglasses or business cards. In fact, some men don’t even undo the stitching in the pocket that comes with a new suit. “However, men are once again rediscovering the art of sporting a pocket square,” said Rohan Khattar, founder, Minizmo. Here are five simple folds, suggested by Khattar, that every man should master to carry the look.
/saentertainmentnewsmagazine
EDUCATION
• Fold one side over so that you get two triangles that overlap. One tip higher than the other looks smarter. • Now fold one side in. • Do the same on the opposite side. • Place your folded pocket square in your breast pocket and you are good to go. Three Stair Fold: This maybe one of the more challenging folds, but when executed well, can give your jacket an excellent edge. Patterns ideal for this particular fold include polka dots and paisleys. Geometric patterns also work extremely well with this
Horizontal Peak: Let’s begin with a classic fold. This is often called as the Presidential Fold. It is one of the easiest ways to fold a pocket square. This fold is best for an elegant attire varying from formal business dress to black tie. Typically a classic white pocket square made from silk or linen is used for this fold. • Lay the pocket square on a flat and clean surface. • Fold the pocket square in half. • Fold one side up. How much of the pocket square you fold in is depending on how deep your jacket’s pocket is. • Fold the fabric in thirds horizontally so that it will fit your suit pocket. About ¼ of the pocket square should be visible. One Corner fold: Another classic fold that is easy and also pretty common. With this fold, you’ll have a small peak of fabric coming out of your pocket. • Lay your pocket square on a flat surface • Bring the bottom point to the top point so that you create a triangle. • Bring the left corner of the triangle to the right corner, and the right corner to the left corner. You should end up with a long rectangle with a point at the top. • Place it in your suit. Adjust until you get the desired amount of point coming out of the pocket. The Puff Fold: With this fold, the desired result is to have a small puff of fabric coming out your suit pocket. Here’s how to fold it. • Lay the pocket square flat. • Pinch the middle of the fabric, allowing the folds to come in naturally. • With one hand firmly holding the pocket square, use your other hand to gently gather it together. • Now gracefully gather up the bottom of the pocket square. • Place it in your suit. Fiddle with it until you get the desired puffiness. Something unique: If you think the above option is rather boring and your date night demands some drama, then this fold might be perfect. Also called two tips up, it’s rather formal and sophisticated. • Start by laying it flat.

fold, giving a stunning contrast. • Lay your pocket square on a flat surface. • Fold one side in so that you have the look of two triangles creating two tips. • To create the third tip, fold the adjacent tip so as you have three triangles. • Fold in the opposite side and make sure to create a strong fold with the palm of your hand. • Place the folded pocket square into your pocket and you are done. Simple ways to beat the Monday morning blues
A
lot of us know that sinking feeling in the tummy as the clock inches towards midnight on Sundays. And that is followed by a set of negative emotions that kickstart a work week. But don’t let Monday morning blues weigh you down and make you less productive. Here are simple ways in which you can beat the blues for good. Identify the problem The first step to beat the blues is to identify why you are getting them in the first place. If the feeling is persistent, then you need to take it seriously and figure out what it is that you are unhappy about. The problem could be negative co-workers,a meeting that you are not well prepared for or even work that you don’t feel challenged about. Identifying the problem is the first step towards fixing it. Be active, take charge and come up with solutions. If that sinking feeling is only occasional, find out ways to cheer yourself in order to begin the week on a great note. Prepare for Monday on Friday Sometimes, Mondays can feel all the more stressful due to work that has piled up from the previous week and it might feel taxing to jump right back in. So if you don’t want to feel anxious about Monday, be sure to leave yourself as few dreadful tasks as possible on Friday afternoon. If there are tasks that you aren’t excited about on Monday morning, prepare for them in advance on Friday and get done with them first thing as you begin the week. Keep your schedule updated so that you have a clear idea about your assignments. List things you are excited about While there are things you hate doing at work, there are definitely a lot of tasks that you love doing. List the tasks you like and select three among them that you are kicked about. Make the list on Sunday evening so that you have things to look forward to at work on Monday. This will help you get into a more positive mood.Relax in the weekend Try to avoid work-related phones or emails during the weekend. Reserve the weekend for yourself. Spend time with friends and family. Don’t bring work tensions at home and focus on enjoying your time off. Learn to unplug. Set aside some time during the week for fun activities so as to not pack in everything in the weekend. Even a weekend of too many fun activities can drain you, leaving you feeling tired. Don’t live for the weekend When you live for the weekend, it makes you feel all the more negative towards work. And this mindset sets unreasonable expectations for the weekend: Instead of being able to enjoy your time off, you feel pressured to make the most of it and, at the same time, feel anxious about having to return to work on Monday. Take it slow and relaxed instead. Courtsey: FEMINA

A Girl in a Whirl Contd. from previous issue (Part 18) “Will Sam come to receive me? If he didn’t come, what would I do? Where would I go?”, such weird questions were scaring me time and time again. My eyes were looking for Sam. Then I spotted Sam. He was coming toward me with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. First time I had a smile of relief on my face since I had left India. I felt like hugging Sam very tightly. My eyes then rested on my mother-in-law and father-in-law standing far behind Sam, and I controlled myself. Sam presented me the bouquet of flowers and hugged me from a side. I liked it very much. I touched feet of all elders as a mark of respect. I showed my love for young children of Sam’s brother. Then I felt like regaining all my senses. I was awestruck to see how neat and clean Canada was. How different it was from India! Weather was cool, humid and clear. Air was so clean that I was unable to believe that Canada, a dream like heaven, was before my eyes. There was a reason why people craved to move to Canada. We left from the airport in two cars. How different were the congested, dirty, potholed roads of Ludhiana from the clean, wide, beautiful and smooth roads of Canada. I was feeling mesmerized to see a chain of beautiful shiny snow-capped

mountains on my left side. Sam was sitting beside me. I was enjoying myself a lot with everything around me. At my in-laws’ in Canada Our both cars stopped at a Sikh Temple. “Let’s pay our obeisance.”, my mother-in-law said. “This is Nanaksar Gurdwara.”, Sam said. We went into the room. The gurdwara was extremely beautiful. I was elated. Then we had langar(holy food). Canada was really a kind of paradise. When we reached home, my so-called bhua aunty, my mediator for marriage, was already waiting for us outside the house. My mother-in-law performed some rituals before my entrance in the house. I entered the house and found it pretty beautiful. My bhua took me inside and had me a seat on a couch. All asked me about my parents, siblings and me. My jethani brought tea, samosas, almonds, cashew nuts, raisins, bhujia, and a variety of sweets. All had tea and snacks. I was feeling terribly sleepy. I whispered in bhua’s ear that I wanted to sleep. My mother-inlaw and bhua took me to a room upstairs. “Here is your room, Sonia, and here is your luggage. There is an attached washroom. Change your clothes and relax.”, said my motherin-law. I quickly went into the washroom, took a shower, changed my clothes and lay on the bed. I fell asleep in no time. My mother-in-

law woke me up around 9 P.M. I got up and came into the kitchen. “I was feeling sleepy very badly. I don’t know how long I lay asleep.”, I told my mother-in-law and jethani who had already prepared the dinner. “It happens so after such a long journey. It will take three to four days to feel ok.”, Daljit, my jethani, said. I took the bowls of dishes to the dining table. Then I came back to the kitchen and Sam called my parents and gave the phone to me. “Hello…yes mom, sat sri akal…I have reached here safe. All is fine, I’m very tired. I am feeling lightheaded …sat sri akal to all. I’ll call you later.”, I didn’t have energy to talk much. Therefore, I wrapped up the conversation. I was yet so sleepy that I felt like going to bed immediately. All of us had dinner. We put dishes in the dishwasher. “I’m still sleepy, mom. Shall I go and rest?”, I asked my mother-inlaw when I felt my sleep beyond my control. She permitted me to go with her closed-mouth yes. I lay on the bed and fell asleep in no time again. I didn’t even know when Sam came and slept with me. When I woke up the next day, Sam had left for work. I got up, freshened myself up and went to the kitchen. “Did you have a good sleep?”, Daljit asked me. “Yes, I’m better now.”, I replied and Daljit burst out laughing indicating indirectly something else. B C Family Day… Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
I
n parts of Canada, Family Day, is a statutory holiday occurring on a Monday in February every year. In the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (PEI) and Saskatchewan, it is observed on the third Monday of February; in the provinces of Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the holiday is instead termed Louis Riel Day, Nova Scotia Heritage Day and Islander Day respectively. British Columbia (BC) observes Family Day on the second Monday of February. Two-thirds of Canadians live in a province that observes a February statutory holiday. Except in British Columbia, Family Day coincides with Presidents’ Day in the United States. The second and third Mondays in February are regular working days in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the territories. As Family Day is not recognized in the federal sphere, federal employees in all provinces (such as public servants and postal workers) work on this day. In Yukon, one Friday in February is deemed Yukon
Heritage Day. The holiday was proclaimed by Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley, on the advice of her premier, Don Getty. Premier Getty said it was important for Albertans to spend time with their families, and that this holiday would emphasize the importance of family values. Getty faced considerable criticism at the time; many employers felt an additional statutory holiday was an unnecessary financial burden. In response, Heritage Day was downgraded to a civic holiday, meaning employers would not be required to observe it. Under Alberta law, the employer may choose to observe Heritage Day as a general holiday, under which rules applying to general holiday pay will be used. British Columbia A private member’s bill to establish Family Day on the third Monday in February was introduced in the British Columbia Legislature by Liberal MLA Bob Chisholm in 1994 but failed to pass. Although there were renewed calls to introduce Family Day in BC between 2007 and 2011, it was opposed by the British Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the Campbell government. On January 10, 2011, while running for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party, Christy Clark proposed establishing a Family Day holiday on the third Monday of February. Clark subsequently became premier;

the Speech from the Throne, delivered on October 3, 2011, said that BC would observe its first Family Day on February 18, 2013. In 2012, a two-week consultation process was held in order to determine if British Columbians preferred the holiday to fall on the second or third Monday in February. On May 28, 2012, it was announced that Family Day would be observed on the second Monday in February each year, starting February 11, 2013. As this does not coincide with Presidents Day, it also provides two consecutive long weekends for tourism, particularly at BC’s many ski resorts. BC Family day holiday celebration date may change: B.C. Premier John Horgan is
looking into changing the February Family Day holiday to align with other provinces.”It’s been his view for a long time that we should be in alignment with other provinces and we’re determining how quickly we can get that done,” read a statement from his office. Denizens of area want to get together over the Family Day weekend with their families and friends in other provinces. It will not be out of place to mention that BC celebrates Family Day on 2nd Monday of Feb. where as other Province celebrate on 3rd Monday of February. Though Horgan’s office has agreed for the change yet did not say whether a change will be in place before the 2018 Family Day, which falls on Feb. 12.

How Much Sugar Should We Eat Per Day … Prof. Surinder Kochhar (Shaun) LPN, FCN, M.Com, CAIIB, DIM (A freelance writer with 36 Years Exp.)
O
n health front We’re all unique and you need to figure out what works for you. Some people can handle a little bit of more sugar in their diet, while for others it causes cravings and binge eating. Eating too much sugar is linked to weight gain and various diseases like Obesity, Diabetes Type II, Brain Stroke, rampant Heart disease, certain cancers, tooth decay, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and a lot more. What is sugar addiction: When we eat foods that contain a lot of sugar, a massive amount of dopamine (a hormone) is released in an area of the brain called the Nucleus Accumbens and we feel pleasure there in. When we continue to eat these foods often and in large amounts, the dopamine receptors start to down-regulate. Now there are fewer receptors for the dopamine. So that means, next time we eat these foods, their effect is bluntedi.e. we do not feel the same level of pleasure. We will need more junk food next time we eat in order
to get the same level of pleasure/ reward. Sugar and other junk foods, due to their powerful effect on the pleasure/reward centers of the brain, function similarly to drugs of abuse like opium, marijuana cocaine, nicotine and sexual pleasure. Yeah, the exact same brain centers are at play in case of sugar addiction. People who have a certain pre-disposition to addiction become addicted to these foods and lose control over their consumption. And are hand to mouth. Hand to mouth, HAND TO MOUTH. I mean hand into the mouth. This is how sugar and other Junk Foods “hijack” the brain hormonal functioning to make us crave more and eat more compulsively. This is the reason, why we lose control over sugar consumption and daily fail in succession.
Since you want to be healthy, then you really shouldn’t be consuming foods that have sugar added to them. Soft drinks, baked goods, processed foods; these foods have no place in the diet of someone who is health conscious and overweight in particular. Be aware that other sugars often labelled healthy like agave, honey, organic cane sugar and coconut sugar fall into the same bad category. On sugar front honey (being processed) is as bad as sugar for a Diabetic person. A diabetic person can safely use Raw Honey instead of table sugar in moderation as honey is more dense and heavy; and has more calories than sugar. One tablespoon of honey (Raw one) has about 64 calories, and one tablespoon of sugar has around 49 calories. The glycemic index (GI) measures how much a particular carbohydrate may raise blood sugar levels. The GI for honey is around 55, which is considered a low GI food. Table sugar’s GI is 65. The honey we buy from shops is processed one i.e. it is heated and filtered and no good. Few brands are selling not-pure honey being loaded with various types of sugar.Sugar molecules end in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose). Read the labels carefully.”

Why Sugar Consumption Is Extremely High? Added sugar is the single worst ingredient in the present day diet. It provides calories with no added nutrients and can damage our metabolism- for sure- in the long run. It is very important to make the distinction between added sugars and sugars that occur naturally in foods like fruits and vegetables. Healthy foods that contain water, fiber and various micronutrients are good for us. The naturally occurring sugars in fruits, vegetables and other fruits mostly are absolutely fine. However, added sugars are those that are added to foods. The most common added sugars are regular table sugar (sucrose) or high fructose corn syrup. If you want to contain or lose weight and optimize your health, then you should do your best to avoid foods that contain added sugars. How much sugar we can consume every day without harm: Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. Some people can eat some sugar without harm, while others should avoid it as much as possible. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are: The American Heart Association recommends the following: 4Men eat no more than 150 calories per day (or about nine teaspoons or 36 grams*). 4Women eat to no more than 100 calories per day (six teaspoons or 20 grams) 4Children should not go beyond three teaspoons of sugar per day, which equates to 12 grams. *One tea spoon is equal to 4.2 gram ** Men and Women leading a sedentary life style need to eat even less
Eat every three to four hours during the day and don’t skip breakfast. When we’re very hungry, we tend to eat more than we usually need, resulting in additional calories and resultant weight gain. Drink more water, coconut water and less alcohol, which is high in calories but low in nutrition. Ramp up the intake of vegetables and fruits and cut back on refined carbohydrates and processed foods. The less sugar you eat, the healthier you will be. A natural, zerocalorie alternative to sugar is Stevia. sugar Sugar consumption in kids Children are consuming more sugar than the stipulated bench mark. One cup of Fruit Loops contains 15.75 gm of sugar? That’s over the recommended amount for kids in a day . Most of the cereals are good for bad health. The key is read the labels and in some cases the labels are misleading. In case You’re Overweight or Obese: If you are overweight, obese, diabetic or suffering from the western diet in any way, then you should probably reduce sugar as much as possible. In that case, you should NOT be consuming sugar above normal level every day. Stick to real, single ingredient foods and avoid processed foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. It’s important to note that there is no need for added sugars in the diet. They don’t serve any physiological purpose. They are good for bad health. How we can minimize Sugars in The Diet: Avoid these foods, in order of importance: Soft drinks: Sugar-sweetened beverages are awful, you should avoid this ab initio. Fruit juices: This may surprise you, but fruit juices actually contain the same amount of sugar as soft drinks. Homemade orange juice with fiber in it made by Nutri Bullet type juicer is an excellent choice. Smoothie in coconut milk or no/ low-fat milk or water a great choice. Candies and sweets: You should

breakfast. Those who eat lean protein and unsaturated fat in Breakfast are not hungry for 4 hrs. at least.
No other country has sweet shops like we South Asians have. Time is ripe for our sweet shops to have Nutrition Facts on their products so that consumers can calculate the sugar, fat, fibre and calories they are consuming. This vibrant community- blessed with a giving nature- looks toward the Physicians in the community et al to come to her rescue. Any takers? drastically limit your consumption of sweets. Baked goods: Cookies, cakes, etc. These tend to be very high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. Fruits canned in syrup: Choose fresh fruits instead subject to availability. Low-fat or diet foods: Foods that have had the fat removed from them are often very high in sugar. Check them before you go for the same. Dried fruits: Avoid dried fruits as much as possible. Prefer fresh fruits with lower Glycemic Index. Drink water and Coconut Water instead of sugar in recipes, you can try things like cinnamon, nutmeg, almond extract, vanilla, ginger or lemon to satisfy your taste buds. Just be creative and use google to find recipes. You can eat an endless variety of amazing foods even though you eliminate sugar from your diet. Sugar in Processed Foods: The best way to cut back on sugar is to simply avoid processed foods and satisfy your sweet tooth with fruits instead. Processed foods are loaded with sugar of different types. Manufactures may trick you. Read the labels carefully. Learn to read labels: Learn to read the labels. Trans fat up to 0.5 gm and starch is never shown on the label. Sugar is shown under different ways. For Example: sugar, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), dehydrated cane juice, fructose, glucose, dextrose, syrup, cane sugar, raw sugar, corn syrup and more. Why Added Sugar is Bad for You: Added sugar can cause harmful effects on metabolism and contribute to many diseases. Though, whether a sugar is “added” or “natural,” the body processes it the same way. But the difference lies in where those types are usually found. — and how your body ends up dealing with them. Fruits typically have a lot of sugar, but they have fiber, too. Eating fiber allows your body to digest sugar very slowly, so you don’t get the devastating crash from a sugar high. Processed foods with added sugars, however, have typically kick the fiber out, so the sugar will enter your bloodstream more quickly, and you’ll likely be hungry again soon. This is the reason why we feel hungry after one hour of carbohydrate loaded
www.SAENTERTAINMENT.CA
Added Sugar Contains No Essential Nutrients and damage teeth: There are no proteins, essential fats, vitamins or minerals in sugar, just empty calories. Added sugars (like sucrose and high fructose corn syrup) contain a whole bunch of empty calories and also cause tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth. High in Fructose, Which Can Overload Your Liver Before sugar enters the bloodstream from the digestive tract, it is broken down into two simple sugars... glucose and fructose. Glucose is found in every living cell on the planet. If we don’t get it from the diet, our bodies produce it as per requirement. Fructose is different. Our bodies do not produce it in any significant amount and there is no physiological need also for it. The thing with fructose is that it can only be metabolized by the liver in any significant amounts. It is not a problem if we eat a little bit of it (such as from fruit). In this case, the fructose will be turned into glycogen and stored in the liver until we need it. However, if the liver is already full of glycogen (much more common), eating a lot of fructose overloads the liver, forcing it to turn the fructose into fat. And we gain weight as such. When repeatedly eating large amounts of sugar, this process can lead to fatty liver and all sorts of serious problems. Keep in mind that all of this does NOT apply tofruit. It is almost impossible to overeat fructose by eating fruit. There is also massive individual variability here. People who are healthy and active can tolerate more sugar than people who are inactive and eat a Western, high-carb, high-empty calorie diet. Overloading the Liver with Fructose Can Cause Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: When fructose gets turned into fat in the liver, some of it get mixed in the blood as VLDL Cholesterol and may affect heart health. The remainder of the fat stay in the liver. This can lead to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a growing problem in Western countries that is strongly associated with metabolic diseases. Courtesy, present day highly processed diets we buy from Drive Through or inside. Recent studies show that individuals with fatty liver, consume up to 2-3 times as much fructose as the average person. Sugar Can Cause Insulin Resistance: Insulin is a very important hormone that allows glucose (blood sugar) to enter cells from the bloodstream and the cells, in turn, burn glucose as a prime fuel in a healthy body. The sad feature of the Western diet (being highly processed and sugar loaded) is that it slowly results in metabolic dysfunction; that means insulin stops working as it should. The cells become “resistant” to insulin and stop opening their gates and then sugar cannot get lodged into the cells and remain in the blood and raise blood sugar levels regularly, which

result in blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage. Many studies show that sugar over consumption is associated with insulin resistance; which is believed to be a leading cause of many diseases... including metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease and especially type II diabetes. The Insulin Resistance definitely lead to Type II Diabetes: When our cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, the beta cellswhich produce insulin- in our pancreas start making more of it, though sugar level continue to be high in the blood. This is crucial, because chronically elevated blood sugar do cause severe harm as mentioned above. Eventually, as insulin resistance becomes progressively worse, the pancreas can’t keep up with the demand of producing enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels down. At this point, blood sugar levels skyrocket and a diagnosis of type II diabetes is made by your Doctor. Given that excess sugar can cause insulin resistance, it is not surprising to see that people who drink sugarsweetened beverages have up to an 80 % higher risk of having Type II Diabetes. Excess Sugar consumption can lead to Cancer: There is considerable evidence that sugar, due to its harmful effects on metabolism, can contribute to cancer. Many scientists believe that having constantly elevated insulin levels (a consequence of excess sugar consumption) can contribute to cancer. Multiple studies show that people who eat a lot of sugar are at a much higher risk of getting cancer. Sugar has Unique Fat-Promoting Effects: Different foods can have different effects on our brains and the hormones that control food intake. Studies show that fructose (sugar in fruits) doesn’t have the same kind of effect on satiety (hunger satisfaction) as glucose. Fructose doesn’t cause satiety in the brain or lower the hunger promoting hormone ghrelin nearly as much as glucose. Though it Causes Massive Dopamine Release in The Brain which lead to pleasure feeling. Added Sugars vs Natural Sugars - Big Difference As per Statistics Canada, on average, in 2004, Canadians consumed 110.0 grams of sugar a day, the equivalent of 26 teaspoons. Mathematically, it is 40 Kg per year and out of that 50 percent (20 kg) is added sugar, which can be avoided by us in a planned manner. According to the American Heart Association, there are two types of sugars found in our diets. There are those that are truly natural that come from foods like grains, fruit and vegetables, and there are added sugars and artificial sweeteners, such as those little blue, yellow and pink packets (avoid using them) found at the coffee stand; white sugar; brown sugar; and even chemically manufactured sugars like high fructose corn syrup. These added sugars are ingredients that are in foods like soft drinks, fruit drinks, candy, cakes, cookies, ice cream, sweetened yogurt,

and grains like waffles, many breads and cereals. Some foods are simply lower in sugar content: One cup of sliced strawberries contains 50 calories, 13 grams, 8 grams of sugar and 3 grams of fiber. With 4 calories per gram, more than 60 percent of the calories in a cup of strawberries comes from sugar. But it’s still lower in sugar than other popular fruits, including bananas and apples. A cup of sliced bananas has 34 grams of carbs and 30 grams of sugar, and a cup of sliced apples contains 15 grams of carbs and 13 grams of sugar. If you opt for that 20-ounce can of soda, here’s what you get instead: 225 calories, zero nutrients and 60 grams of added sugar, in the form of high fructose corn syrup. Which one sounds more appealing? The soda or the strawberries? Those added sugars, which are placed in sauces, breads and pastas, in addition to excessive amounts in sweets, beverages and cereals, put unnecessary calories into the diet and cause inflammation, disease and more. While it may increase energy briefly, it does not add much-needed nutrients. How to Reduce Sugar Intake successfully: Reducing sugar intake is not as hard as you think, but if you’re addicted, it can take some practice and commitment as in every case. The American Heart Association shares some great tips on how to reduce sugar. Put these ideas into practice on a regular basis, and in no time, you will reduce sugar and reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and obesity: 4Remove sugar, syrup, honey and molasses from your cupboard and table. 4If you use sugar in your coffee, tea, cereal, pancakes, etc., cut back. Use half the amount you usually use to start and even less over time. And no artificial sweeteners! 4Drink water instead of flavored beverages and juices. 4Buy fresh fruits instead of fruits that are canned, especially those in syrups. 4Instead of adding sugar to your morning cereal, use fresh bananas or berries. 4When baking, cut the sugar by one third. Just try it! You probably won’t even notice. 4Try using spices, such as ginger, cinnamon or nutmeg, instead of sugar. Try unsweetened applesauce instead of sugar in recipes. 4Consider pure stevia, (a zero-calorie plant sugar) but use in moderation as It’s very sweet, so you don’t need much. By inculcating discipline on the dining table, we can slowly and steadily succeed in a planned matter. But those who fail to plan, plan to fail.
If you do not eat much sugar for 21 days then the craving center in the brain starts rejecting sugar likeness and we succeed in controlling it.

Rachel Weisz Wants Superhero Role

ctress Rachel Weisz wants to star in a movie like Wonder Woman and says the superhero film was her favourite film of 2017. Weisz, 47, was blown away by Patty Jenkins’ film which featured Gal Gadot in the lead role and would love to work on something similar. However, she insists it isn’t the type of film she could make happen herself, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “I’m totally open to doing the big movies. Maybe I was more in the mood for smaller, more character-driven movies, but now I’m quite in the mood for a... But I just can’t make it happen. Someone has to offer it to me,” she told Empire magazine. “And I can’t produce one of those. I wouldn’t know how to do that,” Weisz added. Asked if she’d like a movie like ‘Wonder Woman’, she said,

Lindsay Lohan Designing Her Own Island In Dubai
“Yeah, definitely. It was good to see that a movie with a female character at the centre can make tons of money. We’re not some weird outlier group. We’re half the planet!” The “Mercy” star, who is married to actor Daniel Craig and
has son Henry, 11, with former partner Darren Aronofsky, says “Wonder Woman” was the first time she had “really enjoyed” an action movie because the titular character and her alter ego Diana Prince resonated with her. Courtsey: IANS

ollywood actress Lindsay Lohan says that she is designing her own island, here and it will be called “Lohan Island”. During her appearance on “The Wendy Williams Show” the “Mean Girls” actress said that her plans to design one of the islands within The World Islands, an artificial archipelago of small islands off the coast of her adopted home Dubai, reports aceshowbiz.com. “I’m discussing designing an island in Dubai, with The World Islands. I have a lot of little projects there because I like to keep busy,” she told host Wendy Williams. She added: “So, when I’m finished filming (British sitcom) ‘Sick Note’ I can go back to Dubai, start the lipstick, discuss that and then design this island, Lohan Island.” The 31-year-old former Disney star went on joking that she was “out-Trumping Trump with the name Lohan!” Donald Trump is known for branding developments with his name. He has a large golfing and residential real estate development with his name on it. Also on the show, Lohan talked about her nightclub in Greece. “I have my club too, in Athens, and then we’re opening one in Mykonos. I figured I’ve gone to enough, I should have my own!” Lohan revealed the Mykonos nightclub would also be named Lohan Nightclub like her Athens club. It’s “a fun place,” she said of the new nightclub. The dearness of 10 cents! And the importance of listening to your wife! (This write-up is dedicated to those who utmost value10 cents and who don’t as well! Those who don’t now, will start valuing it more than the most! Read on!)
Written by N. Bala B.Engg; MBA (Finance); CAIIB
O
ther day, I set out to run errands for few household chores. My wife always tells me that I need to always carry around, at least a hundred bucks cash in my wallet; you never know when you will need and for what! I used to stoutly dismiss her, thanks to the plastic age - making payments has become a breeze, either online or offline! Coming back to the chores, I kept checking off the items one by one in my TTD (things to do) list and the items were melting away, like the snow in the rain outside! And there I was, at the last bullet! And I heaved a sigh of relief - finally it is getting over! I wanted to treat myself with a coffee from Timmy’s --before I wrap up with that one last thing more to check off from my TTD. I remembered a Tim Horton’s gift card lying in the glove box, given by someone and I thought I would use that! Then suddenly, I changed my mind and wanted to complete the full list, before I go for that coffee! It was to fax out a bunch of papers. I found in the bunch, inter alia, a void cheque. So, I had to first take a photo-copy of the void cheque (obviously), before I fax. I found nearby, a Shopper’s Drug Mart, sporting the Canada Post signage. I was happy, as normally most of the Canada Post outlets do have a fax machine and a photo-copier too. The feel-good-factor was great, as I was sure that both copying and faxing can be done at one single stop and by one single payment using one single plastic, period! I went in to the mart and checked for Canada Post. I was directed to go to the corner of the mart and there remained hidden Canada Post! I gave the fax number and requested the serving lady to fax the bunch and before faxing, to add the photo-copy of the cheque to the bunch. She told me much to my disappointment that she did not have a copier. I told her that normally the Canada Post carries

one. She said ours is not normal! I asked rushingly where I could get a photo-copy really quick, as I wanted to get rid of the list equally really quick! She said mart has one and it is in the other corner. I went to the ‘other’ corner to be greeted only by no one and there lied a copier glumly and almost gathering dust. At the very first look itself, I could figure out that it is a generations old copier and in its last phase of life, almost dying or dead! I was wondering, with no one around, thanks to the self-help culture, how successfully I could photo-copy my cheque! I approached the machine after mustering some courage and placed the cheque on the scanner glass, closed the cover and pressed the ‘Start’ button. Nothing happened! “Put 10 cents”, boom came the voice from behind and there was a mart person standing there and looking at me with a ‘you-don’t-know-even-this’ look! I obediently started examining the machine and found an attachment with a coin slot with a hand-written sticky saying ‘Drop 10c here’, eagerly waiting to devour 10 cent coins! And here I am the guy, with a feeling of ‘the poorest’ on the planet! I told that lady that I don’t have 10 cents. She said we need 10 cents. She strangely added, sounding practical though, that I may give any money, even a hundred-dollar bill (this one, for a change, sounded familiar, as I had heard this several times from close quarters!) and I will be given the change! My mind raced to the past, thinking about when was the last time I had a hundred-dollar bill (for a moment, I forgot all I need is just 10 cents!) in my wallet! Ironically, only the other day I was assigned (by who else, of course, my wife!) to give away one-hundred-dollar bill as some ‘all cash deal’ payment to someone who did some repair work at home! I quickly checked with my ‘quick silver’ memory, if I continue to have that bill still in my wallet. As luck would have it, I wasn’t having it! That meant that, I have already given that away to that someone! Tired of that many that’s! My immediate thought made me feel guilty for not listening to my wife to keep cash always! After overcoming that, my mind went to side holders of
my car where we usually throw the ‘unwanted’ but now the ‘most wanted’ coins. I ran to my car to check my luck! I ran and my luck too ran out! I remembered only the previous day, when we went to the temple, my wife wiped off all coins from all compartments in the car to offer donations into the several donation boxes located at several vantage locations throughout the temple! Hoping against hope, I checked on the car floor, floor mats, carpets, crevices, folds, nooks and crannies; tough luck, not a single coin! Now, I had several options before me, to get hold of that ‘10 cents’. Option 1: Go back to Shopper’s Drug Mart, buy some thing, some random thing, and try your luck, if the machine gives a ‘Cash back’. Many machines nowadays don’t! Option 2: Go to Tim Hortons and don’t use that gift card! Instead, try again a ‘Cash back’ trick, after buying your coffee using the plastic though I wasn’t sure! Option 3: Go around and look for some one generous who will help you with 10 cents counting you as one more ‘homeless guy’ and doling you out that ‘invaluable (or valuable?)’ 10 cents! Option 4: (easiest) Go to the nearest ATM and draw some money, any money which will make up at least to 10 cents! I chose obviously the last option (easiest) and drew a twenty-dollar bill from the nearest ATM. Back to the mart. Timmy was on the way. Pampered myself with the muchneeded caffeine load - with a large double-double! It came to 2 dollars and 10 cents (finally!). I was given a change - 3 x $5 bills, 1 toonie, 3 quarters, 1 nickel and 1 dime all $17.90, which I looked at with great respect, held and secured safe to myself, as my most priced possessions! Next, I strode - like a king with all pride and joy as if the entire world of fortune was under my feet - so much cash (?) by way of bills and coins in my pocket - in to the mart once more, and went to the machine straight and
started operating it with complete confidence! Everything was on my side now and I was smiling! After dropping the 10 cents coin, placing the cheque underneath the cover and above the scanner glass, I pressed the ‘Start’ button. The machine promptly disgorged a sheet of paper. I took a look! Holy smoke! The output was some back side copy of some id of some person used the machine perhaps before me! Definitely, it was not the copy of the cheque. Quickly, I was reminded of the unpicked receipts by the previous customers at the gas station stalls. I literally screamed and shrieked after seeing it and after going through all what I have gone through, in the name of 10 cents! ‘Voice from the behind’ person re-appeared and saw me and quickly realized what happened. Apparently, this wouldn’t have been the first time and she might have been quite used to, seeing the way she handled the ‘situation’. She, with all grace possible, opened the coin box and re-set it. She took the copy and gave it to me, nonchalantly! I was reminded again of an adage “half-heartedly done is to be twice done!” Self-help and unmanned (plus ‘un-woman’ned? siding feminism too, in this male chauvinist world!) systems exactly make things to be done 2 times! I grabbed the copy of the cheque and made one single bunch and was readying myself to fax the whole bunch! I counted the papers - in all 19 pages and approached Canada Post for faxing. The lady said the fax machine too is stationed in the mart and it belongs to the mart! Back to the ‘Voice from the behind’ person only to be told that mart will charge $1.50 per page! Least to say that It was an atrocious pricing! I thought it would be something like 30 cents per page similar to other Canada Post outlets! Most redeeming feature was that they allowed me this time to pay by my favorite plastic! Otherwise, with my 17 dollars and 90 cents cash in my pocket, I would have been pushed to the ATM back again to meet my fatty fax bill of 31 dollars and 92 cents for 19 pages that included 12% tax! There goes the story about the dearness of 10 cents! And the importance of listening to your wife! What I would have done next with my wallet is anybody’s guess!

How to prepare for the Academic IELTS I
ELTS, TOEFL, CPE, CAE, they all have one thing in common: these collections of letters are an obstacle you need to overcome provided you are an international student and want to study at an English-speaking university. This can be nerve-racking, time-consuming and expensive. However, it is a requirement that is not disputable and questioning the exam itself does not get you anywhere, so the best thing to do is to accept it and try to make the best out of it. This article aims at helping you to do that. Know the rules and play by them When I attended an IELTS preparation summer course in England, I was told that my academic writing is way too academic for the Academic IELTS. Sound ironic, doesn’t it? In fact, you are preparing for a certain testing system. Thus, knowing the rules is imperative. Obtain knowledge of the content of the four parts (listening, reading, writing, speaking), the different tasks to answer the questions, the topic areas (e.g., policy, the arts, education) and the assessment criteria (what the examiners are looking for). To put it in a nutshell, you should entirely understand what you have to do and what the exam will look like. Only then can you prepare and study adequately. For that to happen, a few tips: firstly, there are loads of free tutorials and videos available online. Secondly, take IELTS mock exams; when you register for the IELTS you can enter an online learning portal and train under exam conditions.
chat with a cute English-speaking guy or girl online, maintain friendships in the form of writing or skyping with people you have met abroad, try to understand the lyrics of your favourite song and sing along – the possibilities
are endless. You do not even need to be that creative, just do what you always do but start doing it in English. What helped me the most After reaching the point where
I had learned the IELTS rules and had become used to English in my daily routines, I broke my IELTS preparation down to the following useful things. However, a good basis of grammar and vocabulary is Courtsey: timeshighereducation needed first.
Include English in your everyday life As an example, read books and articles in English or watch the news. With respect to the news, not only will this probably improve your vocabulary, grammar and listening competencies, but it is also informative and provides you with arguments and examples for your speaking part when debating social phenomena and global issues. Moreover, it is possible that your speaking topic will focus on media and the news, like one question I had once: Describe a person in the news that you would like to meet (one minute preparation time for holding a two-minute monologue; ready, steady, go! And yes, in that very moment I wished I had watched the news more often). There are no excuses. Even if you are tired and unmotivated to study, including English in your daily life can and most importantly should be fun, especially when you are considering studying abroad and using this language all day long in the near future. So do not think about it as preparation for an examination, like it is an unpleasant endeavour to do. Do things that are fun but do them in English. Watch videos, movies or series in English (it is very helpful to make notes and study the new terms and phrases afterwards), meet with a friend and pretend to be English or American tourists in your home town,

Indian Jewelry A Unique Blend of Tradition and Fashion
I
ndian jewelry to Indians has always been more than just ornaments for adorning the bodies. The jewelries speak of tradition, the rich history of the country and the change that the county and the countrymen have been through. Along with such traditionalism comes the fashion sense thus an unusual range of jewelries have been crafted since ages. As they say India is a mixture of different colors with different people living together. Thus, in the fashion of jewelry, one can witness a mlange of cultures, thoughts and the different interpretations of beauty. Nature has always inspired the Indian jewelry designs. The early civilizations used flowers, leaves, twigs and vines to create natural jewelry to adorn their bodies. The different regions of the country have blended their designs with the nature designs and as a result we get a wide range of different designs. The flowers and leaves, vines and twigs are a common sight in the Indian jewelry. But, what one will find interesting is that these designs come in such different styles that they all seem extremely unique. The kundan jadau designs (one of the famous Indian designs)

come with a blend of semi opaque crystals (kundan) along with gold, silver and other metals. The designs are extremely ethnic and traditional and are being carried forward since historical times of kings. With time, the designs have taken up contemporary designs, but the originality of the culture is still maintained in the jewelry designs. Indian gold jewelry is one of the most loved jewelries the gold has always had its magic after all. Although considered fit for traditional occasions and ethnic wear accessories, Indian gold jewelry has continuously changed with time. The contemporary Indian jewelry designs are fit for both ethnic and party wears. You can wear a pair of jeans with party wear top and still flaunt gold earrings, gold chains and gold armlets. Indian women, especially the married, have always had a tradition of wearing jewelry. So the designs are extremely feminine, but also fashionable. Indian gold jewelry is extremely special in the Indian culture and thus has always had its own aura. The jewelry designs with time blended in with semi-precious and precious stones. Along with the
flowers, flower petals and leaves, geometric designs like squares, circles, rectangles and triangles have joined the design league in different forms and variations. Diamonds are always a favorite and Indian jewellery doesnt step behind in this area. The traditional Indian gold jewelry designs have added the diamonds to create some of the most exotic creations portraying the rich fashion and
expert craftsmanship. Indians have always brought around the art and culture in their creations. Thus the Indian jewelry designs speak fashion but also carry ahead the rich tradition. The history, the culture and the everyday-changing fashion blend in to create some of the finest jewelries one can ever think of. Courtsey: articlepool.com

Five decor trends that are making a comeback

vogue. Golds and greens The avocado green was a big hit in the 70s. Home decor professionals say that this colour is all set to take up center stage once more. You could choose to use it on walls or furnishings, all the while balancing it with golds. Bright golds and yellows can make your home look brighter and warmer all the while adding a certain fresh charm to the room. Framed forever Displaying a cluster of pictures all over one wall has been done to death. But the fact that filling a wall with pictures that matter to you will never really go out of style. Gallery walls are expected to make a comeback next year, say experts. Courtsey: TNN

f you are someone who is fond of warm, comforting and oldfashioned styles, especially when it comes to doing up your home, its definitely time for you to rejoice. The upcoming year, 2018 is expected to see some old, overdone and overused decor styles making a comeback with a vengeance and once more, to grab its position in the limelight. Though trends and style are ever-changing and ever-evolving concepts, many will agree that the bottom line will continue to be the same always — any kind of decor works only when it can make a house feel like home. Here’s looking at a few dated trends that are expected to be a hit next season... Metal and more Using brass in fixtures, table lamps and furniture accents has been around forever, and this trend is surely not going anywhere soon. So pick up stylish chandeliers, floor lamps in shiny golden metal and usher in some bling at home. Adding small doses of brassy goodness to your home can actually bring in a dash of festivity. Choosing monochrome The sheer sophistication of monochrome will always ensure that it never goes out of style. The statement a stark black and white decor can make is unparalleled and will appeal to you if you are a follower of the minimalist style. This decor trend is holding on to its position at the top for a long time presumably. Extra-large luxe The luxury of space might not really be for many Mumbaikars who are cooped up in studio apartments; however, big and extra-large furniture is sure to take up space in the top hottest decor trends list for the coming year. If not all, opting for at least one statement x-large piece of furniture could help you be in

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June ) -Your mental processes are energized. Filled with many new ideas, you have an urge to read more, gather all kinds of information and learn new things. You really need to communicate, as planning projects, attending meetings, running errands and taking short trips occupy all of your time.
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October ) – You can use or develop skills to make you more independent in financial and other ways. Increased determination and willpower make you more demanding and critical. Romance through a chance encounter, or a sudden infatuation is very much a possibility.

s I entered the newly opened Drive Motorsports I was promptly greeted by Rahim Jamal who sits in the showroom surrounded by what I would call a collection of fine automobiles. One could only dream to own some of these amazing supercars however Rahim can make it happen. Rahim Jamal is the product of working from the bottom up. His story of the Automotive business goes back to 2001, After years of selling and managing big retail brands such as Mazda, Toyota, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz & Porsche the vision of doing something more personal in the business came about.
“Growing up my father also had this amazing drive and passion for anything car related “. Jamal’s family moved from Dar-Es-Salaam Tanzania to Toronto in the late 70’s where his father started off in the Parts Department at a local Mazda dealership in the East end. “My father always taught me that you must treat your friends, family and colleagues with the utmost respect if you expect the same in return.” Throughout his many years in the business he has this philosophy at the fore front of each dealing at Drive Motorsports, “We decided to take the boutique approach and get that personalized one on one service back to our guests and
clients” Says Rahim. “We are not a visible dealership from the street or one you will drive by and decide to stop in, we solely rely on word of mouth, past guest referral’s and clients who have enjoyed our service in the past” Drive Motorsports is located just minutes from the Vancouver international airport in Richmond BC, they cater to the finer automobiles however it doesn’t stop there, they also carry vehicles for the normal day to day commuter as well. The website is updated as new inventory arrives which is almost on a daily basis. Rahim hand selects each car personally to ensure
that the pedigree, service history and colours are attractive for the market. “We understand the situation of new immigrant’s, students and individuals here on work permits, this is another amazing thing that we offer here by approving them with no hassle” Rahim added.
