Wheels turning on Mainstreet

American hot rod and classic car lovers are being urged to keep Labour Weekend free with the return of the Breakers Wheels on Mainstreet event to downtown the Mount. Organiser Straw Lye says this year’s event is building on the success of the last two years, while marking a new beginning with the backing of new Mount Maunganui rods and classic car club ‘End of the Road’. “The format’s pretty much the same, and we’ve got strong support from Peter Melgren at Mount Mainstreet, but we’re giving the public a chance to be more involved with a people’s choice award,” says Straw, who has helped run past events for the National Street Rod Association. Registration numbers to date are lower than this time last year but Straw is expecting a late surge. “The weather will have been putting people off, but we’re expecting a rush when it settles down.” Organisers are expecting about 200 vehicles to take part in the display along Maunganui Rd and in Coronation Park, down from last year’s record of 320 when numbers were boosted by out-of-town vehicles attending the National Street Rod Association’s annual national convention.

Maunganui Rd and Coronation Park will be crammed with great cars and onlookers again this Labour Weekend for Breakers Wheels on Mainstreet. Photo by Tracy Hardy. Straw says a highlight will be having the president of the End of the Road Rods and Classics’ sister club attend and help with judging. “Next year we’re hoping to have a group of the Gold Coast members come over and take part and leave their cars here for the Beach Hop.” The event is open to any vehicles from hot rods, classics and custom cars and bikes along with retro caravans – a new award category – with owners not required to be car club members. “We’re wanting to keep it as open as possible. It’s all about making it easy for all car lovers to get involved whatever they’re into.” The display will run from 9am-2pm on Saturday, October 25. Korando has room to move, move, move

I will admit – SsangYong has never been on my radar. The vehicles to date have been somewhat, shall we say, an acquired taste? Maybe they fired the designer – he or she never seemed to realise the errors of their ways but thankfully this latest rendition was handed to an Italian – and SsangYong just got sexy.

problem, even a bit fun! It doesn’t struggle on the open road either at 110kw – give or take a tiny bit – power is plentiful.

Spacious style

The SsangYong Korando is the baby of the SsangYong offerings, and even though it’s a compact SUV I would say it muscles itself well in to the midsize SUV range. Its sleek styling draws you in; and once inside you could probably fandango in there, it’s so spacious! Our test vehicle is the two-wheel drive petrol Limited Edition Korando, outfitted with the 2.0 e-XGi engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Externally, it’s hard to fault – easy on the eye, flowing curves and a cheeky smile. A far cry from its 1974 beginnings as a Willys Jeep look-a-like, surviving more than 35 years to become a world record-holder for Korea’s longest surviving name plate – and at one point in time, being the ‘Dream Car of Youth’.

Inside, the Korando seems to perform a magic trick. You have to wonder how so much space could fit in to the body. Nothing is a chore either, all settings, controls, buttons, dials – everything – is simple and well thought out. Even the rear-folding seats are a work of art – a simple touch of a button and the rear seats fold completely flat in one swoop. No fiddling with seat cushions and back rests, it all folds neatly in to the foot well in one motion. The dashboard offers up USB and auxiliary inputs for your favourite devices; and Bluetooth hands-free for capable mobile phones. These are all entry-level standard features too. Our Limited Edition comes with some extra finishing and safety options, such as curtain airbags and ESP – activating all kinds of other safety features to keep you out of a roadside hedge. All models boast a five-star KNCAP – the Korean version of ANCAP – safety rating too, so you know you and the family would be as safe as possible, should anything untoward happen.

Town and around tuning

Options to suit

Driving the Korando is a very pleasant experience. The engine has been tuned to perfection for it’s urban destiny, with low-end performance being truly surprising. Getting away from the lights is no

The Korando comes in four flavours – the entrylevel Sport, our test model Limited Edition, and the SPR. The 4th flavour is the SPR diesel, which gives the Korando SPR 129kw and 2000kg towing capacity – huge for a compact SUV. The SPR variants are also the only all-wheeldrive models, if you need that stronger off-road ability. You have six exterior colours to choose from; and in the SPR model you also have the luxury of leather appointed seats with several colour options too. I’m impressed. Very impressed. Prices for the Korando start at $27,990 for the Sport with 0 0 i2 etrol e-XG six-speed manual gearbox – the only manual r 2.0litre P e d n li y -c 4 W k configuration available – all other models are .6 9 0 Engine: 1 1998cc, t: automatic only. c en ti m a ce m la to Disp peed au -s ix S Our test drive model comes in at $33,990, n: Transmissio and prices go up to $41,990 for the SPR D 2W : Diesel model. Buyer confidence drives new sales

Friday 10 October 2014

Matata off-roading mixed bag Ben Thomasen’s hopes to claim the national offroading title have been dented when broken suspension and gears stopped his UTV (pictured) finishing the Matata enduro on Saturday, where Tauranga’s Dyson Delahunty, 15, claimed the North Island title in his Class Four vehicle (inset).

The surge in new cars sales shows no signs of slowing, breaking another record in September despite the traditional brake on sales of a general election. Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford says the highest registration of new vehicles in September – with 11,840 – in the 39 years since records were collected shows continuing strong demand at a level “unimpeded” by the election. “Healthy economic confidence combined with competitive pricing is fuelling strong demand for new vehicles,” says David, who is predicting a new annual sales record of more than 124,000 if demand remands high. This would break the 30-year record of 123,247 new registrations in 1984. A new September record has also been set for commercial vehicles of 3458, with commercial registrations up 21.5 per cent to 4907 for the year to date compared to last September, while total sales are up 10.3 per cent – numbering 6218. Toyota continues to dominate with 20 per cent market share in September with 2321 sales followed by Holden on 11 per cent and Ford with 10 per cent. The top selling new vehicle model is Toyota Corolla with 629 sales followed by Ford Ranger with 595. Toyota led both the passenger car market with 19 per cent, followed by Holden on 12 per cent, along with the commercial market where Toyota had 21 per cent – followed by Ford on 19 per cent.

Friday 10 October 2014

From the best of times to the worst, the final round of the North Island National Offroading Championships served up a mixed bag for Western Bay drivers at their backyard Matata track. For 15-year-old racer Dyson Delahunty, who has been competing in the Class Seven for the last three years, an attitude of cautious optimism paid off when he claimed North Island champion title after winning three of four races at the third-round event. But the day didn’t go all his way, with his vehicle’s steering breaking six laps into the enduro, leading to a Did Not Finish for the event. In two weeks he heads to Christchurch for the nationals, then returns to Tauranga to pack up his 1200cc VW-assembled and powered off-roader and weigh up his plans for next season. His father Jason’s 1600cc offroader has been parked up for Dyson but the young driver is hoping to compete in both. “I’m thinking I’ll stick with the 1200cc for the North Island and national events, but use dad’s old one in the one-off Taupo 1000 event.”

Te Puke driver Rex Croskery also drove well, claiming the North Island championship’s Class Four title. But Tauranga’s multi-talented motorsport driver Ben Thomasen wasn’t so lucky, facing a series of hurdles which saw him tumble to second place in the Utility Terrain Vehicle class. It follows a strong season, which saw him take maximum points in two earlier North Island rounds as well as becoming the country’s first UTV driver to claim a major off-road racing title when he won the New Zealand Offroad Racing Endurance Championship in Nelson in July. “I had a shocker of a weekend,” says Ben, who struggled with his UTV in the three short morning runs due to problems with his front differential slowing him down. He looked set to claw his way back into contention in the UTV enduro but was forced out of the race with a smashed front suspension and bent right gear when he was clipped by a larger vehicle that didn’t realise Ben was trying to pass. “It’s put me back quite a bit for the nationals but I’m definitely going to give it everything I can in Christchurch,” says Ben, who is determined to make up for last year when he’d been on target to claim the national offroad series but a mechanical problem forced him out of Raglan’s last round. Drifting ahead for duo Tauranga’s DSR drift team had a bittersweet start to the D1NZ season at Manfeild last weekend, with two solid results – but car damage threatens the rest of Dave Steedman’s campaign in the sixround national drift series.

Bay Driver

Adam Davies shows his top drifting form, as he battles to claim runner-up in the D1NZ’s Pro-Am class at the opening round at Manfeild. Photo by Erron Soon (D1NZ)

“It was great to start the season so well, but the damage to the car so early in the season could put me out – it’s a huge blow,” says Dave, who secured a fifth place finish in the Pro-Class and his best-ever result. Pouring time and money into improving his car set-up during the off-season, Dave says the major damage from a few melted pistons couldn’t have come at a worse time. “We’ve used our sponsorship on set-up and don’t think we can afford the repairs,” says Dave, who’d love support from new sponsors to help him. “Otherwise, I might have to sit the season out.”

Swapping seats

With his car put out of commission in the practice rounds he was forced to borrow Davies Steedman Racing teammate Adam Davies’ car for his pro round, after Adam had already gone on to claim second in the Pro-Am class. Dave, who got involved in drifting 10 years ago in the motorsport’s early years at Pukekohe, credited part of his success to the work the pair had done on Adam’s car during the last six months “so it drives like a dream”. After achieving a series of solid results in drift competitions during the year, Dave earned a place in the Pro competition. He completed his first full season last year and was determined to build on his results. “Ultimately, I’m happy with how we progressed throughout the season with constant improvement and adjustments dialing in the car,” Dave told Bay Driver

By Hamish Carter

before heading into last weekend’s initial round. He was hoping to match it with the top drivers this season with a custom suspension package and major adjustments to his Nissan S14’s current RB30DET engine set-up to produce more power.

Finetuning Nissan setup

“Our goal has always been to bridge the gap to the big-budget teams and compete at the highest level,” says Dave, who rates similar changes made to Adam’s Nissan 180SX 13B as helping transform the car. Adam agrees, saying after struggling with his car’s handling for the last few years because of its 13B turbo rotary engine

package it’s now driving well and looking at sharing his Nissan with Dave in the competitions if they can’t repair his engine.

Adam’s strong start

Adam is also delighted with his own result at Manfeild, where he qualified first before ultimately finishing second in the Pro-Am behind Troy Jenkins. His strong result shows Adam’s an emerging threat in the national drift circuit, after last month finishing fifth at the NAC NZ Drift Nationals against some of the country’s top drivers, achieving the best result of all Western Bay drivers competing. It was similar at Manfeild with the team DSR drivers finishing ahead of the Bay’s

other drivers, with Dave leading Tauranga’s drivers in the Pro class in fifth with 63 points, Drew Donovan in 10th (58), Cole Armstrong 11th (58), Jodie Vehurlst 16th (54.25) and Aden Omnet 19th (25). “It was a great start to the season,” says Adam. “I’m really focused and determined to finish in the top four so I can move up to the Pro class next season, so I’m aiming to podium every round.” After finishing fourth at the Mount Smart round last season Adam’s looking to doing even better at the next round at the Auckland venue in November. Rear view on the rally season It may have been a slightly disappointing finish to the season for Tauranga’s top two rally drivers, but Dave Holder and Phil Campbell are already planning for an even better season to follow this year’s debut.

“It was really good to get another solid finish under our belts, it’s been a pretty good way to finish the championship,” says Phil, who admits he was hoping to finish a little higher up the ladder after aiming to claim fifth spot for the season with a better Manawatu result. Earning a total of 54 points in his first season in the NZRC’s top 4WD class, Phil finished just three points behind fifth place Lance Williams “It’s been a fantastic season for my first year in 4WD,” says and says he’s pleased with major Dave, who slipped from second to third overall in the Brian improvements made during Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship the last six months. table at the recent Manawatu’s GoPro Daybreaker Rally, He picked up the which completed the six-round season. pace halfway through Dave finished third – dropping to just one point behind Ben the season with his Hunt, who was 43 seconds ahead in second place – to earn confidence-boosting 95 points for the six-round season. maiden win at the The title and a handful of records were Tauranga Clubclaimed by Richard and Sara man’s Rally and his Mason, who’ve dominated second placing at the season with a total 174 the Coromandel points from the five wins Goldrush Rally. from all the rounds they “I’m definitely competed in. happy with where Despite performing we are now. Minor love affair For as long as he can remember Cliff Arnold has been drawn to anything motorised – as a toddler he was always running off to investigate the sound of a roaring engine. But at age six it was love at first sight for the young Taupo schoolboy, when he set his eyes on a Morris Minor which began a lifelong attraction to the model. “I just loved the shape; I loved the roundness of it,” says Cliff, who during childhood saw his connection to Minors tighten when his father bought one. Sixty years he’s owned more Morris’ than he can remember. “I bought old Morris 8s – a 1935, a 1945 then a 1948, until I got enough money for a Minor,” says Cliff. And his passion for the vehicle remains as strong as ever – during the years he’s built up a business restoring and maintaining Morris’ for clients. He’s become a driving force in Tauranga’s Morris scene. But despite his passion for the English marque, he’s far from a one-eyed Morris maniac, enjoying a wide range of other cars. “I liked Zephyrs, Mark 1s, Zodiacs and so on, but I always had a Minor on the side.” The Oropi mechanic owns six Minors these days – including a truck and a van he regularly drives along with a motorhome he built himself. Tucked away in the shed are three unfinished restora-

tion projects he’s starting to accept he’ll probably never fully complete, so is considering selling them. Like many fellow enthusiasts Cliff ’s become more open to using parts from other makes and models to produce a better vehicle in his rebuilds, such as fitting his everyday Minor truck with Nissan running gear and disc brakes to make it safer on the road. “There used to be lots of people who would say to me: ‘Cliff, you bastardised this Minor’ but over the years most of them have changed their tune and seen the appeal of modifying their own. “There are still one or two who are purists but most people are putting in other running gear,” says Cliff, who describes the Minors as not being designed to cope with modern driving conditions of higher speeds and need for top braking. “By modifying them I’m able to do 90km/h-100km/h comfortably, so I can keep up with the flow of traffic.” During the years Cliff and his late wife Heather, who shared his passion for the Morris brand, regularly took to the road in the Minors – travelling far and wide. Inspired by the fun they had, along with the attraction of having all the comforts of home at

hand when accompanying Heather on her regular op shop expeditions, Cliff set about creating a Minor motorhome from a converted truck. “She absolutely loved the idea,” says Cliff. Sadly Heather never got to overnight in the finished motorhome before dying in 2010, but Cliff has since taken it on a few short trips with his daughter. “It’s so small everything has to be tucked away,” says Cliff, who says the 1488cc powered motorhome squeezes in bunks, a spare bed, kitchenette, bathroom and toilet – after

juggling layout options sketched on the floor. “Now that I’m finished I still enjoy taking it out, but it’s not the same,” says Cliff, who is still actively involved in the Rotorua-based Morris Minor Club after the Tauranga club’s dwindling numbers saw it fold about 10 years ago. “I keep hoping that we will be able to get it up and running again here in Tauranga, but a lot of people don’t seem to want to get involved,” says Cliff, who would happily sell some of his Minor restoration projects to young people to get involved in the Tauranga Minor scene. Jumping class to team Suzuki Crashing out of the national motocross series in March, Te Puke rider Logan Blackburn is back in the saddle with his sights firmly set on regaining success when entering the MX2 class in two weeks’ time. On Wednesday Logan joined Mount Maunganui coach Andrew Hardisty and his Moto City Bel-Ray Pro Rider Suzuki team mates at the launch of the new MX team at Pirini Park, where the frustrating end to his last season was a distant memory. “It’s really exciting. We’ve got a great team [with MX1 riders Rhys Carter and Brad Groombridge and MX2 rider Campbell King] and Andrew’s been in the game for a long time so there’s a lot to learn from him.” The team launch follows a long winter recovering from surgery on his collarbone broken in the last round of the national series and an earlier lower leg and ankle injury that needed his bones to be reset. “It was hard watching the racing from the sideline these past few months and I’m really looking forward to getting out there again,” says Logan. The 20-year-old had been off the bike for five months – and only two months since resuming riding he’s still building up fitness, rating himself at only 50 per cent. “I’ve still got a long way to go. I’m putting a lot of work into my fitness and getting out on the bike most days, but I’m not going too fast yet because that’s when things can happen.” Logan’s frustrating end to his season was all the harder coming on the heels of his near-miss the previous year, when despite a consistently strong season-long performance he missed the 125cc class title by only one point. But the disappointing result is just one more motivation for him to make sure he gives it his best this time round. “It was kind of heart-breaking after the last season, when we’d funded it ourselves as privateers and just missed out. “I’m all fired up to give it my best. It’s been so good getting

back out there and riding every day,” says Logan, who is adapting to his YZ250F after stepping up from two-stroke 125cc bikes. “I’m really excited about racing in the MX2 [250cc] class. I can’t wait to get out there and racing,” says Logan, who is limiting himself to training runs and minor club events. “The hardest part is getting used to a four-stroke.” He’ll face his first real test at the MX Fest at Taupo at Labour Weekend, with most top riders expected to compete. Logan says he’ll focussed on his technique and giving it eve-

rything he can. While knowing he has a long way to improve he’s confident he has time before the national series in the New Year. “I’m a bit nervous [about Taupo]. I know I’m not quite ready, but the real goal is the nationals.” Along with regular riding with his team mates, Logan is focusing on building up his fitness to cope with intensive competitive riding, with his eyes firmly set on making the top five in the class this season “or ideally the top three”.
