Okay,therewasaUnionJack8849mup theworld’shighestpeakonFriday,May 29in1953.Butitwasn’tbeingfluttered byanysmug,conqueringBrit–itwasa NewZealandflag,anditwashitchedtoan icepickheldtriumphantlyaloftbyaSherpa mountaineerandphotographedbyabloke withachinlikeasnowplough,agoofy grin,andafunnyhat.

AND…andamanofimmensephysical endurance,mentaltoughness, andtechnicalskills–probably NewZealand’sgreatestsportsman ofanycode.OneSirEdmund PercivalHillary,KGONZ KBE,mountaineer,explorerand philanthropist.Andall-roundnice guy. SirEdwasthefirsttosetfooton theroofoftheworld,tosucceed whereothershadfailed,andothers haddied.SirEd,aKiwi–despite LIFEmagazineatthetimetrying tospreadtheglorybyconstantly referringtohimasBritish.And whenSirEdmadeitupthere,there wasnodiscardedemptypacketofpork scratchings,nousedEarlGreyteabags,no ‘GeorgeHerbertLeigh-Mallorywashere’ etchedintotherock.No‘ForKingand country’or‘haha–beatyou!’

“Thenasalinterventionis, primarily,quitecostly.That wentbytheby,andthathas onlybeendonebyraising fundingforitandthenoffering it,”saidWright.

Theadulterationofsubstances andthetoxicdrugsupplyis themostprominentconcern forus,saidNewZealandDrug Foundationprincipalscience AdvisorEmilyHughes.

Suchtoxicdrugsaremixed inwithsomeformofsynthetic opioid,oreitherfentanyl,which is1000timesthestrengthof heroinornitazine,whichis potentially40timesstronger thanfentanyl.

Thereisamassivesurgeinthe useofpillsandpowdersinNZ witharound56,000people,or 1.6percentofthepopulation, usingcocaine.

Dailyconsumptionofthat drugincreasedby93percent comparedtothepreviousthree years.“AsofJuly2024,the NationalCentreforClinical ResearchonEmergingDrugs hadcollatedallthedrug warningsandfoundthat Nitazinehadbeendetectedin everytypeofsubstanceacross Australia,”saidHughes. TomEley

TaurangamayorMahéDrysdalehasvoted againstaddingfluoridetoTauranga’swater.

TheOlympicrowingchampionsayshehas“real questionmarksaroundsafety”andwantsmore assurancesitdidnotposearisk,despitehealth authoritiessayingcommunitywaterfluoridationisa safeandeffectivewaytoreducetoothdecay.

Tauranga’swaterwillbefluoridatedfromOctober24 afteramajorityofcouncillorssupportedthemoveata councilmeetingonMonday.

Itmustdosotocomplywiththedirectorgeneral ofhealth’sdirectivetofluoridatefor30daysbefore November30orriskafineofupto$200,000plus $10,000perdayifnon-compliancecontinued.

Thefluoridationdirectivefirstmadebythen-director generalofhealthDrAshleyBloomfieldin2022said hehadconsideredthescientificevidenceandwas “satisfiedthatcommunitywaterfluoridationisasafe andeffectivepublichealthmeasurethatsignificantly reducestheprevalenceandseverityofdentaldecay”.

Ithasbeencontinuedbycurrentdirectorgeneralof health,DrDianaSarfati,wholastmonthdeniedthe council’srequestforadeadlineextension.

Communitymembersagainstfluoridationfilledthe publicgalleryandprotestedoutsidebeforeMonday’s councilmeetingstarted.

Drysdaletoldthemeetinghehadconcernsabout fluoride’simpactonpeople’shealth.HewantedSarfati

toconsiderevidencereleasedsince2021whenan evidenceupdatesupportedtheconclusionofa2014 ChiefScienceAdvisor’sreportthattherewereno adversehealtheffectsofwaterfluoridation.

Themayorwantedassurancefromherafterviewing newerinformationthatshe“stillbelievesthatitis safeforthewholecommunityandthereisnoriskof reducingcognitiveabilityorIQ”.“Iwouldliketo seethedirector-generalcomeoutandgiveusthose assurancesifshe’sgoingtodoubledownandensure thatweactuallyfluoridateourwater.”

Somecouncillorswereconcerneditwouldbe unlawfulnottoagreetofluoridate.DeputyMayorJen ScoularsaidTCCwasinan“uncomfortablesituation”. “Ourlegaladvicetodayisthatitwouldbeunlawful nottocomplywiththedirective.Asalawfulcitizen andalawfulcouncillor,Ibelievethisistheonlyoption we’vegotaheadofus.”

CouncillorRickCurachsaidhewouldalwaystake thelawfulapproach,whichpromptedhecklingfrom thepublicgallery.TheissuewaswiththeGovernment andthe“noiseneededtobedirectedthere,”hesaid. Thevotetofluoridatewassplitwithsixinfavourand threeagainst.

ThisweekapetitionwaspresentedtoTaurangaCity Counciltostoparainbowcrossingbeinginstalled outsidethecitylibraryonDevonportRd.

MoreprominentcentressuchasAucklandand Wellingtonhadshopsandcafeswithstickersintheir windows,indicatingasafespacefortheLGBTQIA+ community,Frysaid.

Visibilityfortherainbowcommunitywasessential forthewellbeingofitsmembersinTaurangabecause theabilitytonotbethemselvesledtosevereoutcomes, Frysaid.“Therearehigherratesofanxiety,depression, self-harmandsuicideattemptsintherainbow communitiesissueandrainbowyoungpeople.There’s alotofisolationandloneliness.”

Asarainbowyouth,growingupinTaurangahad itschallengesbecausethelackofsupportinthearea coupledwiththestigmasurroundingithaddire consequencesonKing’smentalhealth.

“IfirstcameoutastransgenderwhenIwas13,butit tookuntilIwas15formetofullyacceptandembrace itduetothestigmasurroundingit,”Kingsaid.

“Iftherehadbeenmoreeducationinschoolsaswell, maybeIwouldn’thavefeltsoashamedforsolong.”

KingfirstbecameinvolvedwithRainbowYouthafter hecameout,andagroupoffriendssuggestedtelling himaboutthecommunity.“ThefirsttimeIwent,it feltlikeIwasabletobreatheproperlyforthefirsttime inyears,”Kingsaid.

TheserefillstationsstretchfromtheNorthEndto AnzacBay,andtheinitiativeaimstoeducateand encouragethecommunitytoutilisethem.

Toenhanceaccessibility,twowheelchair-friendly refillstationshavebeenadded:oneattheNorth Endnearaccessiblebeachmatsandpicnictables, andanotheratIslandViewPlayground.Helen Clarkhascommendedtheefforts.“Anestimated 828millionsingle-useplasticbottlesarethrown awayeveryyearinNZ,whichworksouttoabout 168perperson,orthreeaweekperKiwi.

“Ifweeachrefilledjustonethreetimes,we’d savearound257millionplasticbottlesayearfrom goingtolandfill,”saidClark.“Thenumbershere speakforthemselves.Thisisamassivewinforour environment,andit’sallthankstothecommunity’s commitmenttorefillingandcuttingdownon

SustainableWaihīBeachhasintroduced CommunityBeachCleanPodstomotivatelocals andvisitorstopickuplitterusing‘Community IpuRāpihi’(buckets).“Thishasledtoa73% reductioninvisiblemacro-rubbishonthebeachand surroundingreserves,”saidSustainableWaihīBeach coordinatorPippaCoombes.

Lookingahead,anewinitiativetoreduceSingleUseCoffeeCupswilllauncincollaborationwith WaihīBeachSchool.And,arecyclingschemefor softfoodandbeveragecontainerswilltargetdifficultto-recycleitemslikealternativemilkanddrink containers.“WaihīBeachiscommittedtocreating amoresustainablefuture–together,we’remaking waves,”Coombessaid.

“Molly’sbeeninBarcelonaforamonthandhas onlyseenSamtwice.They’rebothworkinglong days,traininginallconditions.That’swhenyou’ve gottohandittothem,”saidDeb.

JasonSaunders,aformerschoolmateofPeter andSam,competedattwoOlympicGamesand isflightcontrollerforbothFrance’sAmerica’sCup and SailGPteams.Hisloveforsailingbeganata youngageatKulimPark,Tauranga.

“Jasonalwayshadthis‘nevergiveup’attitude anddetermination,”hisfatherPeteSaunderssaid.

horseriding,itwas onlyafterherhorse wasinjuredthatshe fullyshiftedherfocus towindsurfing.

“Shewasalways sporty,”hermother PaulineTenHavesaid.“Whenshewasinher lastyearofprimaryschool,shedidathreedaysailingcourseandlovedit.”

AkeyturningpointforVeerlewas competingintheworldchampionships inItaly.“Shefinishedsecond-to-last,but itdidn’tmatter.Shelovedthevibeofthe competitionandwashooked.”

Inspired

Veerlewasinspiredbysportspeoplesuchas BarbaraKendallandcoachesalongthewaybut remainsabigbelieverinmakingsureenjoyment isthekeyfactor,saidPauline.

ThomsonsaidlastJanuarytheyhad296 animalsintheircare–andtheyreally struggledbecausetherewerenotenough fosterers.

“KittenseasonisusuallyNovemberMay,butwe’refindingthatit’slasting longer,soit’smoreliketheendof SeptembertoJune,”saidThomson.

“Lastkittenseason–October2023June2024–wehad834kittenscome intoourcentre.”

Thisputsamassivepressureonthe shelterasthefewerfostererstheyhave, thelessroomtheyhaveavailableinthe shelter,whichmeansthere’snospaceto bringmoreat-riskanimalsintotheircare.
