Jaguar F-Pace
The British are coming Bringing an entirely new model to market could be considered a bit risky but the experts at Jaguar are pretty confident their first ever SUV is strong enough to tempt more than a few buyers over from the Germans.
It was distinctively Jaguar and had headturning road presence. But how did it drive?
The Jag fanatic
Selecting this week’s Bay Driver, I was delighted to discover Tauranga has its very own Jaguar fanatic Max Martin. Max, who owns Harcourts Tauranga and Mount Maunganui with his sons Simon Duncan & Ebbett Tauranga’s sales and Nigel, bought his first Jaguar at age 23. executive John Hancock says the all The Jaguar Mark 1 is a British saloon car new F-Pace was actually inspired by the that was produced by Jaguar between 1955 F-TYPE. and 1959. “It is a performance SUV that has the Max purchased his on his 23rd birthday. DNA of a sports car,” says John. “It was a beautiful black one with red It certainly did look the business when leather upholstery,” Max recalls fondly. Bay Driver took it for a test spin. Max says he went on to buy a Mark 2 followed by an XJS Daimler Jaguar in 1974 before giving up his obsession for a few years while his family was young, opting instead for the practicality of a nonBritish-built station wagons. SPECS
Max says the thing he liked first about the F-Pace was its size. “It’s just not too big like other SUVs I have owned,” says Max. “But the thing I love most is it’s got great performance too – much better than I expected actually.” Obviously passionate about his Jaguars, Max went on to say that not only had he decided to keep his F-Type he’s also placed an order for the F-Pace as well. Good on you Max! It sounds like you’ve worked pretty hard over the years mate – you deserve it!
Nothing quite like it
The dimensions of the F-Pace place it somewhere between the mid-size set – like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Porsche Macan – and their larger stablemates – BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE, Porsche Cayenne. Those looks alone are likely to sell more than a few cars before anyone’s even driven the F-Pace. There are some attractive sporty-premium SUVs on the market but there is genuinely nothing on the road that looks like an F-Pace. And we reckon that is a good thing! Despite the sleek shape, there is plenty of headroom in the second row, as well as ample legroom. It is much roomier than its exterior dimensions suggest. It might have the DNA of a sports car but this is a solid family SUV. And in terms of practicality, the F-Pace has an impressive 508 litres of boot space. When the F-Pace is up and running the 280kW/450Nm supercharged V6 engine was really impressive. With this powertrain, the all-wheel drive – which is
standard across the range – F-Pace can race from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds. Taking off from a standing start is a joy as the F-Pace reaches speed in no time at all. The eight-speed auto is a smooth shifter, so much so that the gear changes were barely registered. It is worth noting there are three spec levels available, starting at Prestige, R-Sport, and then the top of the range S models –petrol and diesel. If you want to take this vehicle offroad, don’t be fooled by its big city looks. It comes with an All Surface Progress Control system, which assists the F-Pace when pulling away on surfaces such as ice, snow and wet grass. It’s sort of like an autonomous off-road system. You set it and take your foot off the pedals and it wades, climbs or traverses for you. It’s a rather clever system and could avert an awkward bogging situation.
The verdict
Jaguar is expecting big things from the F-Pace and it is anticipating a lot of buyers coming across from other brands. From a purely design perspective, we don’t think they will have any trouble there. But thankfully there is more to the F-Pace than its handsome looks. There is genuine practicality and flexibility to the cabin, meaning the F-Pace can easily handle family holidays as well as school runs, and it will look fabulous in the process. If the XE announced Jaguar’s intentions to the world as a serious contender in the premium segment, the F-Pace shows the British marque means business. The Germans have been warned. By Matt Batchelor

Rare vehicles wanted Wellington’s waterfront will host its biggest motoring event next April. The Motor Trade Association is celebrating 100 years by hosting its largest ever motoring event on Wellington’s waterfront next April – and its calling on New Zealand’s most spectacular and diverse vehicles to enter a public exhibition. Established in 1917, MTA has developed from a small organisation to become the largest automotive industry body in NZ, representing more than 4000 automotive businesses and acting as a strong advocate for motorists. Now it’s organising the country’s most comprehensive and creative motor show for people to see and hear about the latest and the greatest cars ever made. Everything from the early crank handle models to autonomous cars emerging onto Kiwi markets will be on display from April 28-30, 2017. But the MTA needs car owners to bring their beloved four wheels to the momentous occasion and is searching for NZ’s most spectacular, diverse and eclectic vehicles. On Saturday, April 29, 2017, the MTA event will spread across Wellington’s waterfront with cars displayed both indoors and outdoors across three jawdropping exhibitions. The Vehicles Exhibition will have the top
100 rarest, greatest and most life-changing vehicles from throughout NZ. A Futures Expo will show the absolute latest in cars, concept models, new and imagined technology. And a Public Showcase will be a carefully selected mix of about 300 classic, historic and iconic cars treasured by their owners and admired by car-lovers. The MTA wants to hear from any carlovers keen to bring their special vehicle to Wellington as part of the MTA100. In order to select the vehicles for display, MTA needs to hear from you by September 1, 2016. They are choosing the best 300-400 vehicles. Categories for display are: • Rare, weird and wonderful vehicles • Vehicles that pre-date 1950. • Pick-up trucks, vans and utility vehicles • Military road vehicles, civil defence and emergency vehicles • Motorbikes, trikes and oddball threewheelers • Racing cars and high performance vehicles • Muscle cars, hot rods and ‘dream’ cars • Classic, iconic and trendsetter vehicles If you have a vehicle that is really terrific, email: kylie.robinson@mta.org.nz or phone 04 381 8836.

Parking where others can’t Subaru drivers can now lock in the weekend of August 20-21 for the annual Subaru Top Weekend at Turoa Ski Field. The Subaru Top Weekend ensures Subaru drivers can park where others can’t, with the top 200 carparks reserved for Subaru drivers of any model Subaru on a first-come, firstserved basis. The latest Subaru line-up will be on display, including the all-new Levorg, plus free coffee, giveaways – and a competition not to be missed. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts CEO Dave Mazey describes the annual Subaru Top Weekend as an iconic event on the Mt Ruapehu calendar. “It’s about rewarding Subaru drivers, who also tend to be our keenest mountain-goers, with the best parks on the hill. It’s a great weekend to be a Subaru driver.”
With Subaru’s All-Wheel Drive capability, access to Mt Ruapehu is made easy for visitors.
Subaru of New Zealand has been the official vehicle supplier to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Limited for more than 18 years. Subaru of New Zealand managing director Wallis Dumper says the relationship with RAL sees a fleet of Subarus on duty at Whakapapa and Turoa year-round. “The Subaru/RAL partnership is the ideal way to highlight how Subaru of New Zealand helps Kiwis get to where they would rather be. “You need only look in the ski field carparks to spot how many Subaru drivers enjoy the advantages of our engineering prowess.” Dave says Subarus are ideal for the road conditions staff encounter up the mountain each winter. “And with the All-Wheel Drive capability, access to Mount Ruapehu is made easy for our visitors.”
