From British motoring’s best vintage Rovers and MGs to classic American hot rods, Bethlehem Town Centre is set to come alive with a display of classic cars from around the Bay on Saturday. “It’s set to be a fantastic event for the whole family,” says Bethlehem Town Centre marketing manager Leanne Brown, who hopes the inaugural ‘Cool Cars for Cure Kids’ fundraiser will attract about 100 cars. “There will be plenty of chrome and horsepower for the blokes and entertainment for the kids. It’s a great chance to bring the community together for a good cause.” Leanne has invited all car clubs and enthusiasts to take part, and has been delighted with the strong support she’s had from the vintage, Mustang, Ford muscle car and rodding clubs. “They’ve really got right behind it, which is fantastic, and hopefully we’ll have good weather so everyone will want to bring their cars out.” Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club member Ron Elton will be among the classic car lovers taking part, displaying his 1951 MG TD – one of two classic British cars he owns. “I’ve had it nearly 20 years. It needed a full

restoration when I got it and almost needs another one now,” chuckles Ron, saying its regular outings have taken a toll on the old girl. “It’s a great car small car. It’s light and easy to drive. It’s got that magical open sports car quality,” says Ron, about the two-seater he’s toured extensively. But when it comes to picking favourites Ron admits to having a particular soft spot for his 1931 Rover 1025 – one of only a handful of the vintage model remaining in the country. “There is something special about it being so old,” says Ron, who says the car was assembled in Wellington. “Being so old it’s constantly being repaired. You really need to have a good handle on how it’s going.” Ron loves to share his passion for the old classics with show-goers, sayings it’s good to let others get a taste of motoring history especially when it’s raising money for a good cause, like the Cure Kids event at Bethlehem. The display runs 10am-2pm on Saturday, August 16, with cars taking part to arrive by 9.45am. Anyone with a classic car (no boy racers) can take part by turning up on the day. Leanne hopes it will become an annual fundraising event to support Cure Kids and its Red Nose Day. By Hamish Carter

Anything but the blues Mitsubishi ASX XLS

Mitsubishi has put their ASX SUV under the knife, and given the car a pretty new face for 2014. But not only have they lifted the face, they’ve lowered the price. Beauty has become a bargain. The nimble new ASX has a lot going for it. Even at the entry level – our test-drive car – you get a lot more than you used to. Luxuries like cruise control, steering wheel audio controls and reversing cameras now come as standard equipment, not to mention the other essentials when looking for a new car – ABS, stability control, six airbags and the all-important five star ANCAP safety rating – it doesn’t get better than that. This is such a pretty car – neat and stylish – yet its snarling front end sets it apart from the crowd, making it unmistakably Mitsubishi.

This dazzling electric blue version certainly adds to that in spades, and sitting on shiny 17 inch machine-finished alloy wheels certainly adds to the presence.

Peppy

Under the hood is the 2.0 MIVEC petrol engine, which is peppy and the perfect balance of power for the car. Fuel economy is good for a large car, at just 7.4litres/100km. The XLS and VRX petrol models are both two wheel drive. Or if you opt for the diesel variants, you also get the added bonus of on-demand four wheel drive. The diesel variants are both 2.2 litre turbo-intercooled power plants, producing 112kW and only drinking a paltry 5.8l/100km. The VRX models also benefit from rain-sensing wipers, heated leather seats, keyless entry, push-button start, enhanced audio system and a range of other improvements.

Inside, Mitsubishi has gone for simplistic styling and layout, everything is straight forward and simple to operate – no distractions here. Cruise control, audio and phone controls on the steering wheel, iPod integration with the stereo and even a Bluetooth hands-free phone system.

Comfort

The vehicle’s steering and seats adjust to all sorts of angles, so no matter what your driving preference is you’ll get comfortable here without effort. With a 60/40 split, folding rear seats greatly enlarge the already generous loading space and fold flat to carry your cargo evenly. Out on the road, you’d think you were driving a normal car. When you sit inside you feel high up; and you’re surrounded by bucket-loads of room, but handling feels like you’re in a hatchback. The high riding position gives you great visibility, large wing mirrors keep you

informed of your surroundings, and the general all round visibility is great. Steering is light and precise, eating up the corners and laughing off roundabouts. Cruising along is quiet and comfortable – and the ASX doesn’t make you think, allowing you to enjoy the drive and focus on the road. So what does all this beauty, style and comfort cost? The manufacturers’ recommended pricing for the ASX starts at just $36,690 for the petrol XLS model – but it’s available from Bay City Mitsubishi right now at just $29,990! The higher-option VRX comes in at $40,590 and diesel variants are priced at $41,990 and $45,990 respectively. This kind of value outstrips a lot of other new cars on the market today, and you won’t be sorry about your purchase. If you’d like the room and height that an SUV offers, with the comfort and control of a car, get yourself down to Bay City Mitsubishi on Cameron Rd – and take the beast for a test drive.
