Mazda’s new baby The first ever Mazda CX-3 has finally been delivered. The baby of Mazda’s SUV line-up, the CX-3 proves that good things come in small packages. Bay of Plenty drivers are going to be poilt for choice with the Ultimate Motor Group offering the CX-3 in petrol or diesel engines, automatic or manual transmissions, front or allwheel drive and four model grades. Believe it or not we actually have 14 variations to choose om,” Mazda sales manager Christine Donaldson told us. Mazda has gone to great lengths and spent a lot of money to sure a feeling of quality and refinement to our newest arrival. ur customers are going to be extremely impressed.” With one in three new vehicles sold last year being of the UV persuasion, it’s no surprise Mazda have extended their X line with the CX3 targeted fairly and squarely at the want a big but not too big, quality but not too expensive, acious but easy to park” market. Despite its smaller footprint (it’s based on the Mazda 2 light r), the CX-3 yields similar passenger space to a Mazda 3 tchback. There’s also the urban drivability. Some customers ndoubtedly feel many mid-size SUV hatches – for example Mazda CX-5 or CX-7 – exceed their needs for load-toting d are more of a handful in urban situations. The CX-3 is a nch to maneuver around town, yet still provides some of the gher-riding security that attracts many customers to SUVs in e first place.
Crash test mummy
Someone who appreciates the styling of an SUV but doesn’t ant the feeling of driving an off road 4x4 is this week’s Bay river or as we call her ‘Crash Test Mummy’ Kylie Marshall. Kylie is a busy and active working mum from Mt aunganui, and we met her at the local park where she was st finishing up a workout with her personal trainer Danny

Grey from The Gym in Tauranga. She couldn’t believe her eyes when we turned up in the new CX-3, saying, “I expected something much bigger,” Kylie exclaimed. Without forcing Kylie into the crash test duties too literally, know that the CX3 holds a 5-star ANCAP safety rating the highest possible safety rating awarded by Australasia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate. While the ANCAP test results will make a statisticians day; the rest of humanity can be safely smug in the knowledge the CX3 comes with more 3 and 4 letter safety acronyms than most. I’ll take your ABS and raise you SCBS and RCTA, in short, a very safe bet.
Size matters
Kylie has actually been looking at small SUV’s and has recently test driven similar sized SUV’s from other car makers. Having always been a Mazda girl previously owning a Mazda 3 and currently driving a Mazda 6 station wagon, she said she would obviously prefer to stick with a brand she is familiar with and trusts. “I just didn’t know about the CX-3, it is exactly what I have been looking for”. Before we headed off on our test drive, we gave the car the once over. Kylie initially commented on the small boot size and while the CX-3 compromises of cargo space of just 264L in its standard configuration we pointed out the handy duallayer cargo floor that can be used to deepen the load space if required and the 60:40 split-fold rear seats (and they do fold flat) when you need to carry a very large load - up to a whopping 1175L.
Beauty inside and out
Upon getting inside the car, the interior’s presentation is top notch. The cohesive design and quality of materials make the CX-3’s cabin a pleasant place to be – it really feels like you’re in a premium vehicle. Faux-leather seats and lovely carbonfibre-look inserts on the steering wheel spokes and door-handle uppers. It’s tidy and very well-finished. Equipment levels are likewise generous and the technology is well ahead of expectations for a vehicle in this price range. Included in the GSX model we test drove was a sat-nav (viewed via Mazda’s smartphone style free-standing seven-inch screen located in the centre of the dash and controlled via a neat iDrive-like rotating knob in the centre console), HUD or heads up display, reversing camera, internet radio with six speakers and keyless start – and that’s just naming a few the CX-3’s bells and whistles. There is also a variety of storage spots to keep important bits and pieces away from prying eyes, and a total of six cup-holders for that all-important morning coffee. A pair of USB ports and a 12V socket means that your devices won’t run flat, either.
Highlighted by the well-weighted, nicely balanced response of the electrically-assisted steering, the CX-3 is light on its feet around town (the kerb-to-kerb turning circle is a handy 10.6m), yet confidence-inspiring in the twisty bits. It feels secure, and provides just the right amount of feedback through the wheel to add to the fun factor. If the planet, or fuel bill are of concern the 2L petrol variant will slurp through a mere 6.1L every 100kms while it’s claimed the 1.5L turbo diesel makes do with just 4.8L per 100kms, and while the statisticians will have a wild Friday night engaged in comparative analysis, our figures are were based on the front wheel drive 6-speed auto versions of both the petrol and diesel power-plants. We reckon the pick of the transmissions goes to the SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed auto in the CX-3. It’s a smoothshifting unit that is always well-timed and responds quickly to throttle inputs. We also liked the fact that it didn’t ‘hunt’ for gears when tackling challenging terrain, and offered a Sport mode to improve response and hold gears when overtaking or driving on winding roads. If you’re looking for 0-100 in less than five seconds the CX3 may not be for you (8.3 seconds for the record). Mazda have staked their claim in the mini SUV market and provided this performer with the ability to handle your weekend adventures.
Smooth handling
On the road the CX-3 feels fun yet sure-footed. The steering is crisp and the suspension works to deliver an engaging drive. Larger wheel rims and the all-wheel-drive layout changes the driving experience considerably compared to other vehicles of this size. A heavier, firmer feel at the wheel and gives the CX-3 the solidity of a much larger car.

Hot rodder’s copper passion From the age of 14, Ray Stevenson had a passion to own a hot rod. Around 16 years ago, that dream became a reality when Ray and his wife purchased a 1930 Ford Model A Tudor shell and created what can be described as a copper beauty. A 350 cu Chevy, fuel inject V8 with an automatic transmission brings the COP A to life every time Ray turns the key. “Being a passionate hot rodder and dedicated to the hobby, all hot rodders like to get things correct, in particular their cars,” says Ray. “I believe we have achieved a good result with COP A. The car is known as COP A, which obviously is a small play on words but basically the name is the result of the colour which is true to the copper colour we loved.” The 1930 Model A Tudor is all steel construction, including the body shell. As well as a 350 Chevy engine, the car boasts power steering and electric windows. “We purchased the shell in a very basic condition, then over a period of time put in 600 hours of panel work to create the finished product ready for paint,” explains Ray. The body shell (Tudor) two-door is all steel and has been modified by way of a 3in (75mm) roof chop with no other modifications to the original body shell. This sits on a new fabricated chassis (Deuce Farm) and runs on a Jaguar S type rear suspension with independent front suspension (Rods by Reid). “We have owned the vehicle for about 16 years and the build has been a team effort from start to finish. “I have always admired 1930 Model As, hence choosing to build COP A to satisfy my passion. From the early age of around 14 years I was fascinated by one of my sisters’ boyfriends (probably a bodgie) who had hot rods and decided at that age that one day it may be possible to own one.”
Ray Stevenson has owned the copper beauty for 16 years. Photo: Bruce Barnard. With the support of his wife, Ray has been able to achieve a driveable and comfortable hot rod. “We are club members of Oceanside Street Rods, Mount Maunganui, which is dedicated and exclusively Pre-1949 American origin hot rods. “The term ‘hot rod’ seems to be misunderstood by many today, but it’s clearly defined as being Pre-1949 American origin and does not include street machines or muscle cars (ie post 1949) and the term Hot Rod really goes back to typically modified Model Ts, Model As and more commonly today 1932-1934 but most would say originated from the 1932 model. “We love the point of difference between a normal vehicle and a hot rod. Most fellow hot rodders treat their vehicles as perhaps their ‘mistresses’ and direct much care and attention to their toys.” Ray says the club promotes responsible and safe driving of vehicles and of course driving them on runs and various events throughout the country. “New Zealand has a very strong following of Pre-49 American origin Hot Rods and we also have some of the finest builders in the world.”

Aviation displays including a mix of classic, sports, military aircraft and gliders filled the skies above Tauranga at the weekend, when the Classics of The Sky Tauranga City Air Show took flight.

Flying over the city’s airport once again, the dynamic event featured static and flying aviation displays, a mix of classic, sports, military aircraft and gliders, along with local NZ Police teams and other displays. The Classics of the Sky Tauranga City Airshow was an associated event with the Mount Truck Show 2016, with proceeds from the truck show going to Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter charity. “We thought this was a fitting charity to support as we are also combining the truck show with an air show,” says Mount Truck Show 2016 organiser Alex Salter. “The TrustPower TECT Rescue helicopter provides an amazing service to people in need and are always on the lookout for help.”
Big rigs put their best wheels forward at the Classic Flyers’ display.
The Theme of this year’s Classics of The Sky Tauranga City Airshow was Spitfire at Sunset, with one of the world’s few two seater Spitfire aircraft arriving early to the event to take some lucky people for rides. The Ardmore based warbird normally charges close to $4000 for a half hour ride but dropped the price to $3000 for a few lucky punters, including John Troughton.
Visitors were captivated by the variety of trucks.
