April 4: New Zealand Military vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 Thirteenth Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own an MV to be a member, as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain an MV either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the Club, and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year.
Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. (Bay of Plenty events get preference and subject to space).
Terms, conditions and lending criteria apply.

driving to a new level with cruise control that not only keeps you at the desired speed but will automatically slow down and matches the speed of vehicles in front. It will keep the desired following distance. At the same time, lane assist keeps the driver in the chosen lane. Combined with the adaptive cruise control, the car is almost driving itself. Don’t be complacent though. Take your hands off the wheel and the 508 is quick to put you in your place with a stern warning. The driver, of course, must keep their hands on the wheel at all times, no matter how much of the driving is being done by the car. At night, or on a gloomy or foggy day, the 508 has a trick that will brighten anyone’s day. An infrared camera works with the big LED screen in the cockpit to highlight any hard-to-see threats lurking ahead in the shadows or the fog, like pedestrians, hidden vehicles or animals. The 508 GT comes standard with a whole bunch of other safety features, collectively known as the Safety Plus pack. That includes Advanced Automatic Emergency Braking System with Distance Alert, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Speed Limit Recognition and Recommendation. Then there is Active Blind Spot Detection, Advanced Driver Attention Alert, and Smartbeam Assistance (automatic high-low beam adjustment). The 508 GT has parking assist which is a lot of fun to play with and real handy if you have a tricky parking spot to navigate. It will literally park itself in either a parallel parking situation or into a parking bay. This whole feast of technology, comfort and performance comes with a sound system that is literally music to your ears – the focal hi-fi system delivers the sound specifically to your location, via 10 speakers. Then there is voice recognition, GPS navigation and all those high-end features you wouldn’t necessarily get in a vehicle in this price range. The 508 feels like a car that is out of your league but the total cost of ownership is something that has been factored into the equation. The retail price, running costs, durability and even the residual price – the price you can expect to get when you sell it – have all been considered. As we cruise back into the Tauranga Peugeot car yard on Cameron Rd, I’m more than a little bit envious of whoever ends up with this car. But it was fun while it lasted. To get acquainted with the 508 GT head down to Tauranga Peugeot. Dan Hutchinson

Peugeot has come out top in a UK vehicle dependability study.
The New Zealand Military Vehicles Club on a recent excursion in the central North Island.
NZMVC BOP Branch Area Rep Pete Yates says they are particularly keen for young people to join. “We are keen to get some fresh blood, they are the future of the club.” “Within our ranks we have a very active ‘Young Guns’ section who get together for annual expeditions,” says Pete. NZMVC strive to preserve the country’s war history by restoring and demonstrating military vehicles dating back to World War Two. “These vehicles are the horses that transported our troops in war, and the need to preserve that history for future generations is paramount,” says Pete. NZMVC has 250 members across New Zealand, and about 20

members in the Bay of Plenty. Everyone is encouraged to join NZMVC, as members are not required to have their own military vehicles. “You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers. Or, you can simply come along for the ride,” says Pete. Within NZMVC there is a variety of military vehicles, including several WW2 jeeps and ex NZ Army Land Rovers. Pete also owns a 1981 ex NZ Army Chevrolet gun tractor. NZMVC participates in local outings throughout the year, alongside other events such as air shows and ANZAC Day Parades. The BOP branch is also planning a Far North Convoy in February 2020. NZMVC BOP Branch meets on the first Tuesday of each month, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club. New members and visitors are welcome. The Citizens Club can be found at 170 Thirteenth Ave, Tauranga.
The race by manufacturers to cram new vehicles with the latest technologies is turning into a headache for owners. Audio, communication, entertainment, and navigation (ACEN) systems accounted for about half of the 10 most problematic issues that owners cite in their new vehicle, according to the J.D. Power 2019 UK Vehicle Dependability Study released this week. The study measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score indicating better performance. The study measures 177 problem symptoms in eight categories: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features, controls and displays, ACEN, seats, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, vehicle interior; and engine and transmission. The ACEN category averages 16.6 problems per 100 vehicles overall, a slight improvement from 2018. Issues with built-in bluetooth, built-in voice recognition, navigation systems and poor radio reception mean ACEN remains one of the most problematic categories. Peugeot ranks highest with a score of 77 PP100, Skoda (88 PP100) ranks second and Hyundai (90 PP100) ranks third. All problem categories, except seats, improved compared with 2018. Even though ACEN problems have decreased from 2018, this category is still mostly driven by issues with navigation systems. Engine problems have the greatest negative effect on quality and reliability scores across the industry, as well as among premium brands. Problems with electric and hybrid vehicles are higher in total—and in the areas of ACEN, seats and engine—than with vehicles with internal combustion engines.
