Al Dawson and the Wildcats will be rocking the rotunda, our famous no-reserve auction is always a highlight and with the shops, bars and school all getting behind the day it becomes a real community effort. October 1: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga

The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tu sday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions, usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year.

October 6: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am

On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people.

List your event: Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

Entertainment is provided through a quality Focal premium sound system. We took the 508 GT out to Te Puna before turning left up Minden Rd and then onto Poripori Rd, back onto the highway and then up to McLaren Falls. The GT’s 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine delivers an impressive 225hp or 165kw. It has an 8-speed, fully automatic gearbox. You have a choice of five driving modes an

we chose the sport option for most of the trip. This means the vehicle is operating at higher rev’s which are held for longer to get maximum power at the end of each gear. It also delivers more feel to the steering, brake and throttle while firmin up the suspension for that genuine driver’s experience. Like the fastback model, the station wagon feels safe and secure and holds the road well. The Icockpit layout gives the driver much better connection with everything going on and the smaller steering wheel gives great feedback when cornering. The stylish, 19” alloys provide a good base and the wagon shares the same well— designed chassis as the fastback. This vehicle is a pleasure to drive, with plenty of power and substance to go with the sporty design. The 1.6 litre engine provides great power but will also deliver pretty impressive fuel economy, especially in the eco mode. You can expect to use an average of 5.7 litres per 100km (4.7 litres per 100km on the open road and 7.5 litres around town). Fuel economy is only part of the story - this vehicle produces just 132 g/km of CO2. It is one of the few Euro 6.2 cars on the market. Of course, being a wagon, you want to make sure it can take all your passengers and their luggage. The rear storage compartment can hold 530 litres with the seats up. Fold them down and you get a generous 1780 litres of cargo space. There is ample leg room for even the tallest people in the front seats. The rear seats will accommodate most sizes of adults. Altogether, there is a lot to like and nothing to dislike about the 508 GT. To try one yourself, just pop in and see the team at Tauranga Peugeot on Cameron Rd.

Kiwifruit and cars top Japan trade New Zealand’s two-way trade with Japan was $8.8 billion for the year ended June 2019, Statistics NZ says. Japan is our fifth-largest trading partner for good and services and is also the host of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In the June 2019 year, New Zealand’s trade balance with Japan was a $347 million surplus. Travellers from Japan spent more in New Zealand (travel exports), at $716 million for the June 2019 year, than New Zealanders did in Japan, at $120 million. “Our top export to Japan is travel services, with nearly two-thirds of this coming from spending by international students from Japan,” international statistics senior manager Peter Dolan said. “In contrast, most spending from New Zealanders travelling to Japan is from holidaymakers. Japan is hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Summer Olympics. These events may attract more New Zealand travellers to Japan.” In the year ended June 2019, fruit was New Zealand’s second-largest export to Japan, worth $617 million. Of this, kiwifruit made up over 95 per cent, worth $590 million, making Japan New Zealand’s largest export market for kiwifruit. Other top exports to Japan were aluminium and aluminium articles ($607 million); and milk powder, butter, and cheese ($563 million). Cars drive imports The top imports from Japan were vehicles, parts, and accessories, valued at $2.3 billion for the June 2019 year. This accounted for 54 per cent of New Zealand’s total imports from Japan, led by passenger motor cars at $1.7 billion. Over recent years, the value of New Zealand’s imports of passenger motor cars from Japan has been generally increasing.

Good Neighbour gets great utes A local non-profit organisatio is overjoyed to be receiving two brand-spanking-new utes from Pacific Toyota Good Neighbour was handed two sets of car keys on Tuesday this week. They are swapping out their current utes for two Toyota Hilux’s. Community impact director Cam Hill says these vehicles will help the initiative continue to deliver vital services to the community. “Every week these utes will be going out to projects helping families, backyards, moving and picking stuff up, dropping off lawnmowers. We will put a trailer on the back and deliver firewoo to families.” “They are multi-purpose vehicles, and it’s a vital part of what we do because it’s a part of our community work. We are proud to take the Toyota name out with us because they are community-focused. “We are really blessed to have all these businesses come in behind us, and it makes a huge difference to the way that we are able to deliver our service.” Good Neighbour is made up of four separate strands, all contributing to the organisation in its mission to bring about change in the community. They supply practical support to community members needing help with projects, run a food rescue service, a kitchen and community gardens. Pacific Toyota CEO Chri Bussenschutt says the company has been supporting Good Neighbour since 2014. “It has been absolutely fantastic to

It’s a very special

Not only will people notice what Good Neighbour is doing, but also celebrate our partnership with Toyota.” The SR Hilux boasts a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, 17” steel wheels and a 2.8-litre diesel engine.

4x4 South Island Trip (Fifth Leg)

As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. Here is our fifth leg of the trip fro Ranfurly to Queenstown. Previously I mentioned we had car trouble with a blown left front hub and axle, but that wasn’t the end of our vehicle troubles. Within 15km of leaving Ranfurly, going up a steep hill, the turbo in my truck decided enough was enough and didn’t want to live anymore. One minute all good, nek minute no power and lots of black smoke out the back. It was evident the rest of our tag along trip friends were a little over my vehicle falling apart, piece by piece. Just goes to show you, not maintaining your vehicle properly,

sooner or later catches up with you. Anyway, we parked the vehicle up at someone’s house and we all squeezed in with the other crews and headed off to Queenstown for a few days for some r and r while we got a second hand turbo flow down from Tauranga on Air New Zealand. Didn’t even know it was possible but if you pay a passenger air fare you can almost send anything by plane... $825 later for the air fare and the turbo was sitting in Dunedin airport ready for collection. After two days in Queenstown, one of the crew kindly drove us all the way to Dunedin to collect our package and then back to Ranfurly so we could spend the next 4 hours swapping car parts over. Not exactly what we had in mind for our family vacation. Once going again we rejoined the rest of the group back in Queenstown for another night before tackling an epic bucket list track, Skipper’s Canyon. More on that in our next chapter.
