Weekend Wheels October 6: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am
On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people.
For over 45 years we’ve been making it easier for New Zealanders to get the things they need. We offer personal and business lending including pre-approval so you know exactly how much you have to work with.
October 26-28: 60th anniversary of Mini, Cliff Rd, Tauranga
One of the most iconic cars of the 20th century - the humble Mini - celebrates the 60th anniversary of its worldwide release this year. Tauranga Mini Owners Club will host the NZ Mini Nationals over Labour Weekend. The Club has secured a great central location on Cliff Road which provides ample space for the Show and Shine display on Saturday morning where Minis compete to be the best in their chosen category. There will also be the ever-popular rocker cover racing competition where rocker covers from an ‘A’ Series engine have been modifie to create a gravitypowered racer. “We’ll create a festive atmosphere with food trucks, trade stalls, giveaways and there’s a prize draw if you vote for ‘People’s Choice’ so we hope the public will come along to join in the celebrations.” Other activities over the weekend include a Scatter Run where Minis compete to visit as many destinations around the region as time permits, a Funkhana which tests driving skill and the ability to manoeuvre around obstacles and a Regional Tour.

November 5: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga
The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition, will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise.
List your event: Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

The fast and the fantastic
When you think ‘Suzuki Swift’, words like ‘speedy’, ‘small’, and ‘economical’ spring to mind.
better than his 2006 Swift and on a par with the manufacturer’s calculation of 5.1 litres per 100km (combined city and open road). “It’s just fun to drive. Punchy turbo engine, 6-speed gear box, auto or manual And that is what you get with the 1 litre RS Turbo. Plus you can add ‘fun’ to the mix [paddle shifters] gear selection and awesome brakes. Disc brakes on all four wheels,” as well. Bruce says. This really is the sort of car anyone can I wasn’t paying for the gas, so for me the enjoy and for lots of different reasons. He can get 18km out So off we went, down Cameron Rd, of a litre of petrol around town and 21km switching lanes here and there, on the highway. That’s almost 50 per cent weaving through traffic to the fron of the queue. In any other car that may seem impetuous, but in the Swift, it feels right. For starters, I took this peppy little car on my regular circuit – through the back streets of Judea and Bethlehem, out along the highway, before turning left on the other side of the Wairoa River Bridge. o b r oosterjet tu B e I parked up and set my r it -l 1 : Engine uto preferences for the seating and a d e e p -s 6 on: adjustable steering column (tilt Transmissi hp) 0 1 and telescopic). controls on the Suzuki with digital readouts in the middle of manual knobs. It has a sporty and fun head-up display and a 7” touchscreen for entertainment, the satellite navigation and hands-free phone system. On the outside, the RS looks the part, parked up in the Wairoa River Reserve looking sporty and festive on a gorgeous, sunny spring afternoon. Then it was time to hit the road properly and wind up and over the foothills of the Kaimai Range. The little turbo produces exceptional power and acceleration and it has a great sweet spot when pulling out of corners and accelerating into the next straight. Usually I will take a circuit that takes me back down State Highway 29 but I was having so much fun I decided to turn right instead and head further up into the Kaimai Range. Near the summit, I pulled over before doing a U-turn on the busy highway and heading back for the city. This car has a good, tight turning circle plus great visibility. On the way back, I encountered one of those totally unexpected things that sometimes happen on the road. A truck coming the other way clears its exhaust at precisely the wrong moment, sneezing wet soot all over the windscreen and bonnet. Thankfully the window washer is where it should be and a few seconds later I’m looking at the road again, perfectly centred in my lane with not so much as a peep out of the lane departure warning system. With that little bit of drama over, I decide
to get off the highway again and explore one of the side roads. I just keep going and going until the road turns to gravel and then figure I had better look for somewher to turn around. This is a brand new car after all. This wee Swift is quite at home on the loose metal – stable and entirely sure footed. Soon I’m back on the highway and heading into town. The exhilarating drive is replaced with a sedate and measured cruise back into town in traffic. The RS ha adaptive cruise control which will hold the prescribed distance to the car in front. It has plenty of other safety features packed in too and achieves a 5-Star Ancap Safety rating. One to mention is the Advanced Forward Detection System. This includes three stages of emergency braking; an alert, a partial brake assist when the risk of collision is high and strong automatic braking if the risk increases further. I don’t require any of those features on this occasion and at Greerton I pull off the main road and park next to the Sushi shop. As I eat my snacks at the table, looking back out at the Swift, it occurs to me that it’s not as clean as when we set off. Back in the yard I hand back the keys and explain the black soot all over the front end. White is usually a very good colour for New Zealand’s predominately pale dirt and dust. Not today. So, if you fancy a bit of fun, head down and see the team at Tauranga Motor Company, on the corner of Cameron Rd and 3rd Ave. They’ll have a nice clean car Daniel Hutchinson waiting for you.

Buckley bags Baypark rights Bill Buckley is already planning new initiatives for Baypark Speedway.
September 2019 will be remembered as an important time in the history of the 18-year-old Baypark Speedway. Bill Buckley’s company, Speedway Racing Limited, has acquired the speedway promotion rights at the venue. Bill Buckley, the promoter of the iconic Western Springs Speedway since 2001 (through his company Springs Promotions Limited), is already planning and implementing some exciting new initiatives and improved fan experiences for the Tauranga venue. “Adding midget car racing on a more regular basis, several international meetings, and televising some of the key events for shows such as Sky Sport, and Prime’s Thursday Night Thunder are
just a few of the big things that I have planned for this season. “We have a lot of work to do, and it is a work in progress, so I thank all the car owners, the drivers, crews, sponsors, corporate box holders and of course the fans and supporters, for being positive and for their patience during this takeover period. Baypark Speedway will hold some exciting events during the 2019/2020 season.” “I am excited about what Bill Buckley and his team can bring to Baypark Speedway – Baypark Speedway and the city of Tauranga will be the winners in this transaction” says Bernie Gillon, who has been the venue promoter for the last five seasons Ervin McSweeney, Commercial Manager at Bay Venues Ltd, the company that manages the Baypark

Speedway venue, is excited by Buckley’s appointment. “He brings with him a wealth of experience, new energy, great ideas and a passion for Speedway. We look forward to seeing how he grows speedway in the Bay.” “The acquisition of Baypark by Bill Buckley and his team is extremely positive for the sport and its stakeholders, Bill has an excellent track record in promotion. We would like to wish Bernie Gillon all the best in his future endeavours.” said Zoe Irons, General Manager, Speedway New Zealand. Bay of Plenty Speedway President, Tim Sidwell, also agrees that this is a “positive move for Speedway at Baypark and the future of our sport.” Opening night for Baypark Speedway is set for Labour Weekend with more exciting announcements to follow.

Tackling the Targa The annual Targa New Zealand tarmac motor rally is 25 this year and the man behind it, Peter Martin of the Ultimate Rally Group, says it has never been easier to enter the event than in its anniversary year. This year the annual five-day event, whic Martin markets as ‘The Ultimate Road Race,’ starts in Taupo on October 29 and ends in Palmerston North on November 2. And with three separate starting groups Competition, the Targa Tour and now a Time Trial organised in conjunction with the Vintage Car Club or New Zealand - Martin reckons that if anyone has ever harboured a desire to do the event, then this is the year to turn dream into reality. “Believe me,” he says, “I’ve heard all the excuses, and all the reasons why somebody ‘can’t do Targa.’ So what I’m doing is pushing back and saying ‘yes you can.’ “You want to do it but ‘don’t have either ‘a’ car or ‘the right’ car?” No problem, get in touch with me and I will find you either a car to buy o one to lease. There is also a two-day rally and a vintage rally for any vehicle 30 years or older.

(Sixth Leg)
IN T O SUMME R Negotiating the Skippers Canyon Rd is not for the fait hearted.
As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. Here is our sixth leg of the trip, from Queenstown to Twizel. Previously, I mentioned we had more car trouble with a blown turbo so after that was fixed we met up with the rest of the grou in Arrowtown, just north of Queenstown for breakfast. We left the ladies there to do shopping while the boys and kids went fourwheel-driving in Skippers Canyon. What an epic bucket list track this was. It was everything you could imagine with stunning scenery and massive drop-offs. I
take my hat off to the early pioneers that lived and worked there, it would have been a very tough life. I don’t think I could have handled the Skippers Canyon track with the missus in the passenger seat because she would have screamed the whole way. It is pretty unbelievable that it is actually a legal road especially with the tour buses that were hoofing it through there I have been told that none of the vehicle hire companies will insure their vehicles on that road either. After picking up the ladies after lunch, (they were quite a bit tipsy, if I may say), we headed off to Twizel to catch up and stay with some old friends for a few days. More on that in our next chapter.
