Weekend Wheels October 26-28: Tauranga hosts 60th anniversary of Mini
One of the most iconic cars of the 20th century - the humble Mini - celebrates the 60th anniversary of its worldwide release this year. Tauranga Mini Owners Club will host the NZ Mini Nationals over Labour Weekend. “It’s going to be a great event for Mini-lovers and we are determined to make it the largest gathering of Minis seen in New Zealand,” says Tauranga Mini Owners Club Chair Gayle Hardie. The Club has secured a great central location on Cliff Road which provides ample space for the Show and Shine display on Saturday morning where Minis compete to be the best in their chosen category. There will also be the ever-popular rocker cover racing competition where rocker covers from an ‘A’ Series engine have been modified to create a gravity-powered racer. “We’ll create a festive atmosphere with food trucks, trade stalls, giveaways and there’s a prize drawer if you vote for ‘People’s Choice’ so we hope the public will come along to join in the celebrations.”
For over 45 years we’ve been making it easier for New Zealanders to get the things they need. We offer personal and business lending including pre-approval so you know exactly how much you have to work with.

November 3: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am
On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Majestic tea bar and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people.
November 5: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga
The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tu sday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise.
List your event: Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

Travelling in Skoda style
Caitlin and Emma aren’t regular Bay Driver contributors but this week, on a rainy Friday afternoon, they took a new Škoda out for a test drive. Caitlin the driver, and Emma the passenger. The two twenty-somethingyear-olds share their experiences of gliding around town in the Scala Style. The Italian word ‘scala’ translates to stairs or steps, and for Škoda New Zealand with their new Škoda Scala this may be the step up in car you were looking for. Being part of the Volkswagen group, the Škoda Scala gives you the European drive without the cost. With a large boot that comes with boot nets and hooks, it can store all of your weekend camping gear or mid-week sporting gear. ‘Simply Clever’ is the Škoda tagline and I reckon those two words sum up the car beautifully. The Scala has a seven-speed DSG gearbox with the 1.5 litre engine using just 5.7l/100km. The zippy turbocharged engine can produce 110kW and 250Nm of torque at 1500-3500rpm. The all new Scala comes with three models for the range, with the Scala Style being at the top of the line at just $38,990*. The other models, the Ambition and the Sport are $29,990* and $34,900* respectively.
On the road
Driving along the expressway between the Bayfair roundabout and Papamoa, the Scala was just cruising along. It was raining and blowing a gale at the time and the Scala felt safe and stable the whole time. It gets up to speed quickly, and as a passenger, you feel safe and sound travelling 100km/h. With a host of the latest safety features the Scala has a five-star Euro NCA safety rating. Safety and assistance features include
lane assist, driver and passenger front airbags, driver knee, curtain and front side airbags. Central locking system - keyless engine start/stop button. ‘KESSY’ keyless entry and door locking, driving mode selection and adaptable suspension, driver fatigue alert and monitoring to support safer driving practices, adaptive cruise control system plus ‘SPEEDLIMITER’, lane assist and front assist with city emergency brake as standard, and side assist with rear traffic alert Parking up at a local shopping centre, it was easy to park and manoeuvre between parked cars and pedestrians. Having front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera made it easy to get in and out of tight car parks. From there, we carried on from Papamoa through to Mount Maunganui, zipping up and down the main road and side streets with ease.
An all-rounder
This vehicle is an all-rounder - take her to Bayfair on a rainy Saturday afternoon or for a long weekend to the Coromandel. She drives smoothly, gliding you across the potholiest of Tauranga roads. It feels great to drive and when you reach your destination you want to go around the block one more time because you don’t want to get out. The Škoda Scala also comes with a great warranty. You receive a five year, new car warranty – or up to 150,000kms, and service intervals every year or 15,000km. The car also comes with full Bi-LED adaptive headlights, including corner light with fog lights, full LED tail-lights with animated turn signal, rain and light sensor with automatic headlights, lights and wipers, exterior mirrors – auto dimming, power-folding/adjustable/ heated, front parking sensors, chrome detailing around the windows and long rear window in black. From something as subtle as the umbrella holder to the almighty touch
screen infotainment system. The newest Škoda range also has four USB C ports which means much faster charging for your phone.
Legroom
The legroom on the passenger side almost seems infinite, and the car ca comfortably fit four people. The moder interior fit-out is sleek and simple. Ge your phone hooked up and tunes will blare crisply out of the speakers, without drowning out surrounding voices. The car boasts an 8-speaker sound system with pre-sets and Bluetooth. Smartlink includes Android Auto and Apple Carplay. It’s easy enough for passengers to fiddl around with the infotainment system without distracting the driver - volume control, changing radio stations, sussing out directions. If you are a regular long-distance traveller the cosy seats help you settle in and enjoy the ride, guaranteeing you won’t be needing to stop every half hour to stretch your legs. The Dynamic Sport seats are black suede and have height and lumbar support adjustments in the front.
All seasons
This is an all-seasons vehicle, it could be your mode of transport for summer cruising or your way to work amid a bleak winter. This hatchback looks and feels good to drive in. It’s the small things - the comfortable, quilted seats, instant heat from the car’s air conditioning and the decently-sized 467-litre boot that could fit family camping gear for th weekend. This car would also be great for someone wanting to upgrade. No matter what your lifestyle is, this car will tick the boxes. It doesn’t matter if you are a stay at home mum or travel out of town a lot for work, this car will do it all. Caitlin Houghton and Emma Houpt

EVs and rentals dominate sales Sales of rental vehicles and EVs helped make September a big month coming in at 4.2 per cent higher than September last year. There were 500 sales of pure electric vehicles during the month and a further 105 sales of plugin hybrid vehicles. Motor Industry Association Chief Executive David Crawford says sales were down by four per cent on the first nine months of 2019, compared with last year - a reduction of just over 4,800 fewer vehicles sold in 2019 to date. “The month of September continues the up and down pattern in the 2019 market. In addition to strong sales of EVs, some distributors had a good month with Holden rocketing up the sales charts and Toyota enjoying a massive September mainly off the back of rental sales.” Overall September 2019 registrations of 14,525 vehicles were up 4.4 per cent (615 units) on the same month in 2018. For the first time ever, registrations of a pure electric vehicle broke into the top three passenger/SUV models registered with 359 Tesla Model 3’s sold in the month. Year-to-date 1,406 new pure electric vehicles have been registered compared to 768 units for the whole of 2018. The market overall to the end of September is down 4 per cent (5,803 units) on the first nine months of 2018. Registration of 10,322 passenger and SUVs for September 2019 were up 9.4 per cent (890 units) on 2018 volumes, while commercial vehicle registrations of 4,203 were down 6.1 per cent (275 units) compared to September 2018. The top two models for the month of September were the Toyota Corolla (1011 units), followed by the Ford Ranger (814 units) and
the Toyota Hilux in third place (603 units). Toyota remains the overall market leader with 21 per cent market share (3007 units), followed by Holden with 9 per cent (1,333 units) with Ford slipping to third spot with 9 per cent market share (1,291 units). Toyota was the market leader for passenger and SUV registrations with 22 per cent market share (2,226 units) followed by Holden with 8 per cent (877 units) and then Hyundai with 7 per cent market share (721 units). The top selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Toyota Corolla (1011 units of which 736 were rentals) followed by the Toyota Yaris (432 units) and the Tesla Model 3 (359 units). Ford regained the market lead with 21 per cent market share (892 units) followed by Toyota with 19 per cent (781 units) and Holden third with 11 per cent market share (456 units). The Ford Ranger retained the top spot as the bestselling commercial model with 19 per cent share (814 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux with 14 per cent share (603 units) with the Holden Colorado in third with 11 per cent market share (449 units). The top three segments for the month of September were SUV medium vehicles with 18 per cent share followed by SUV Compact with 14 per cent market share and the small passenger vehicle segment in third with 12 per cent market share. It is the first month in several years that sales of Pick Up/Chassis 4x4 segment has not been in the one of the top three selling segments. Reflecting their brand’s strength in the rental market the top four rental model’s year to date are the Toyota Corolla (1877 units), the Toyota RAV4 (555 units), the Toyota Yaris (494 units) and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (383 units).
