On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Majestic Tea Bar and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people.

A little bit of top-class speedway action at the track voted New Zealand’s number one track at the 2019 NZ Speedway Awards, plus a lot of fireworks f r a great family night out. This speedway meeting is the first in the 2019/20 season o all the cars will have had their winter makeovers and they will be joined by many making their debut. At least eight new Ministock drivers will be having their first night out in front of a huge crowd, which will be incredibly daunting but it won’t take them long before they are on the pace. The Superstocks and Stockcars will do all the crashing and bashing along with Steve Williams (ex Caddy for Tiger Woods) and the DVS Super Saloon Series take to the track for their opening meeting.

November 9-10: Armistice Cambridge at Lake Karapiro
Tanks, trucks and all things military on display as part of Armistice Cambridge. The military vehicle focus will be on artillery barrages on both days with the highlight being the performance of the 1812 Overture complete with Artillery Gunfire on the Saturday night Armistice in Cambridge is the largest commemorative event in New Zealand and marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between the Allied nations and the German Empire in 1918, ending World War One. As well as the official memorial ceremony at the Cambridge Cenotaph on Remembr nce Sunday – the closest Sunday to November 11, the history and pageantry of New Zealand’s military past is also recognised, through displays of military items - old and new – from tanks and trucks and weapons and uniforms, through to aircraft, helicopters, boats, models and all manner of other displays. could actually fit a small jazz band and all of its gear in one trip. Honda calls this set-up ‘Magic Seats’ and I can see this becoming a popular feature in many cars in the future. The interior is finished off with stunning orange detailing and stitching, a leather steering wheel and gear shifter and sports alloy pedals. On the outside you have a sleek, aerodynamic shape, complete with 16” RS alloys. The dash is big and deep with two extra little triangular windows in the very front corners that are designed to reduce front blind spots, but also add to the sharp styling. Visibility is fantastic with a small hood, big windows and a reversing camera to boot. The RS has the 1.5 litre VTEC engine and this is a great power plant for a car that weighs in at a slender 1066kg. Using Honda’s EarthDreams CVT transmission is the low stress way to drive but it does have a sports mode and sevenspeed paddle shifters for the full driver’s experience. The suspension is naturally firm and sporty and I was pleasantly surprised when I shifted from normal mode to Sport mode. Using the paddle shifters means you can hold those gears longer and generally just dictate the pace and acceleration a lot better. Having said that, most people will be pretty content with the CVT auto most of the time. The latest generation CVT has a more natural, sporty feel to it and it affords excellent fuel efficiency at just 5.6 litres per 100km. This car has all the ingredients you need for the Bay of Plenty lifestyle, all at a very

competitive price. It is a small car with classleading space and performance. You can pair your phone up using Android Auto with Google Voice Search or Apple Car Play. This allows you to mirror your messages, Spotify and Google Maps onto the 6.8” stereo touch screen. The Jazz has a lot of Honda’s advanced engineering and safety features including vehicle stability assist which helps the driver stay on the road in adverse conditions. It helps avoid over and understeer. The smartest safety feature in the Jazz RS is City Brake Assist. This radar sensor operates under 30km/h and will apply the brakes automatically if the driver does not react in time. Entering roundabouts or busy intersection around town is where most of these nose-to-tail accidents tend to occur. This system also incorporates False Start Prevention. The Jazz RS will disable the accelerator if the driver accidentally presses the gas pedal, instead of the brake, when parked up. The new Jazz is lighter and stronger than older models making handling more responsive and improving the safety of driver and passengers. LED headlamps and running lights complete the modern Jazz. I’m a total fan of this car. It really does deliver a lot for its size and price tag. The new RS styling and the big boot means you can back up to the beach, pull out the picnic and enjoy the good life, in style. IN T O SUMME R The view of Birdlings Flat from high up on Banks Peninsula.
As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. Here is the seventh leg of the trip, from Twizel to Akaroa. Twizel is an amazing place, tucked in a great open valley surrounded by some great mountain ridges. You would need almost a lifetime of living there to explore all the tracks and rivers. After a few days of R & R, including a brief stopover to Mt Cook, we headed off to Christchurch’s Banks Peninsula, which normally should only take about four hours. But once through Christchurch, instead
of taking the normal highway, we opted to take a shortcut, 500 metre track over a beach estuary called Birdlings Flat. Sure got everyone’s blood racing as the small Canterbury stones were so slippery to drive on and it all could have ended not well had everyone got stuck. Once through we headed high up into the peninsula with the Canterbury plains and Mt Cook in the background. Such epic scenery and it was very hard staying on the road when our mirrors had such wonderful views. Once at the top, we headed back down the other side into a bay called Te Oka Bay. It was here at some other friends’ house we would stay for a couple of nights for some R & R and a little local exploring. More on that in our next chapter.
