Settle in for the ride
I always feel like a very refined gentleman when I seat myself in the cockpit of a new Peugeot. Yes, the driver’s zone is called the ‘i-cockpit’ and you feel every bit like the captain of your own personal star ship when you take the controls. On this occasion, it is the new 3008 Allure that I climb into at the Tauranga Peugeot yard on Cameron Rd. It’s a really hot day but there is a wee trick on the remote key – just hold the unlock button down and the windows are sliding down before you even jump in. The climate system is cooling me down in no time at all, with independent temperature zones for both driver and front passenger. I just love the i-cockpit and could happily spend an hour just tinkering with the various options. You can set up your own displays with various options and configurations for all the must-haves like speed and rev’s and the all the other things like speed warning signs, lane assist visual warnings etc, etc. For a bit of wow factor there is a huge optional panoramic sunroof. You can have different graphic display themes, different coloured lighting options, and pre-set seat positions for your personal preferences There is Apple Car Play and Android Auto plus built-in SatNav on the 8” screen – no compromises there, even though many manufacturers figure it’s enough to just link your phone’s map app to the screen. Other convenient devices take away more
of motoring’s niggly bits. For example, you can wave your foot under the rear boot opening and it will automatically open for you. Those little touches, along with the sleek lines and the very sophisticated interior styling, all adds-up to a feeling of luxury and class.
Engineered work of art
This is a very refined and polished SUV. The 1.6l turbo engine delivers 165hp so there is good acceleration. Critically there is a healthy 240 nm of torque available from below 1500rpm to make accelerating over the Kaimai’s an easy drive. Fuel economy (7 litres per 100km) and CO2 emissions (156g/ km) are both excellent for any vehicle, let alone an SUV and this adds to the sophistication of the Allure. So, with a press of the start button and a nudge of the gear shift, I ease out onto Cameron Rd. I’m feeling pretty good about everything really, right down to the low profile gear shifter that requires minimal effort and comes with push button parking brake. The steering wheel is a cleverly engineered work of art – small and sporty and flattened off at the top and bottom to allow greater visibility and control. My journey takes me up into the Kaimai Range where I test the general handling and the sport mode. As expected, this is a very comfortable ride, thanks in no small part to the new EMP2 chassis/platform. The slightly lighter 2019 Allure achieves a really nice balance between comfort and handling. The sport mode and the column mounted paddle shifters allow you to hold the revs longer,
accelerate faster and get the benefit of tighter steering. It takes the driving experience to the next level. I come to a line of traffic stopped at roa works and opt to do a U-turn rather than subject this beautiful machine to hundreds of metres of loose metal. It does have a few extra trims around the place to mitigate stone damage, including the wheel arches but why take the risk?
Plenty of space
So I head back the way I came and then continue on to explore the coastal areas of Omokoroa and Te Puna – beautiful locations for a stylish vehicle. I stop in a coastal rest area and explore the seat configurations and around the exterior. There’s good space inside for what is classed as a medium-size SUV. For even more space, try the bigger 5008 but the 3008 would suit most families. There is good headroom and legroom in the back seats, even when the front seats are adjusted back. It is a front wheel drive and the transmission is forward so there is no annoying hump in the centre of the floor at the back. There is ample room for three to sit comfortably. The quality of the safety features is also pretty impressive. The LED daytime running lights look impressive, and powerful Quartz Halogen headlamps not only have the auto on/off function but also automatically dip for oncoming traffic Speed limit recognition means you’re never unsure what speed zone you are in. The Advanced Driver Alert system will even keep
an eye on your attention levels and warn you when it senses you are getting drowsy.
Style and comfort
Then there is the active lane assist system that corrects any obvious deviations, active blind spot assistance and a fantastic emergency braking system. Active Safety Brake is triggered when the driver does not react quickly enough, preventing or mitigating nose to tail accidents and other collisions. These systems use visual and audible warnings too, with the auto brake only engaging when a collision is imminent. The 3008 comes with one of the best Bluetooth voice activation systems around including txt-to-read which helps the driver avoid unnecessary distractions. If you haven’t tried a Peugeot for a while, I strongly recommend you go and see the team down at Tauranga Peugeot on Cameron Rd. It will open your eyes to another level in motoring comfort and style.

The brilliant build-up continues for Bay of Plenty brothers Mitch and Damon Rees as they race towards the start of a fresh New Zealand Superbike Championships season.
A new app by Z allows motorists to buy up fuel at the best price, before they need it.
Its new Sharetank is now being trialled through Z App. People can use Sharetank to pre-purchase Z fuel. They can then use their virtual Sharetank litres later, to fill up at any Z service station People can buy up to 1,000 litres of their chosen fuel type, store it virtually until it’s needed, and can share access to their tank with up to five others. Z’s chief innovation officer, Scott K Bishop, says until now Kiwis have largely had to accept the current price of fuel and were limited to when they could buy it by the room in their tank. “We know customers get frustrated when they fill up and the next day their local service station’s fuel price drops because of changes in the exchange rate, costs or local competition. Sharetank lets customers choose to buy fuel when the price is right for them. It’s great for budgeting.”

Honda man starts the way he means to go on
Playing the fuel market Z Energy is offering its customers the option of filling up a “virtual fuel tank”
Weekend Sun Friday 15 NovemberThe 2019
“Sharetank really is a win-win for our customers. If the pump price goes up after they’ve bought Sharetank litres, customers save as they’ve already locked in cheaper litres. If it goes down, customers will be alerted when they go to fill up and can choose to save their Sharetank litres for another day,” Scott says. Z’s Chief Customer Officer, Jane Anthony, says using a virtual tank also saves time for people who drive across town to get a better price. “Customers’ time is precious so when they prebuy through Sharetank they’ll automatically get the lowest Z pump price within 30 kilometres of their location and won’t need to travel to get it. They can buy from the couch, work, the passenger seat or wherever suits them.” Z will use the trial to evolve and improve the Sharetank offering based on customer feedback following launch. The Rees boys teamed up to tackle the Honda-sponsored Circuit Club Motorcycle Register Endurance Race at Taupo’s popular Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park over Labour Weekend, the pair winning that gruelling three-hour battle ahead of Taupo’s Scott Moir and Glen Eden’s Daniel Mettam. And so began the build-up for the looming 2019-2020 road-racing season. This victory was significant for the Rees siblings because Moir and Mettam are also likely to be among their fiercest foes when the 2020 nationals kick off at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, on the outskirts of Christchurch on January 11-12. But, immediately after the podium celebrations in Taupo, the champagne corks were promptly inserted back into the bottles and bike mechanic Damon Rees exited the workshop and boarded a plane for Australia. There he took his Honda CBR1000SP1 to record a pair of superb 10th-place finishes at the final round of the Australian Superb e Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park on November 2-3, capping off a solid spell of racing for the young Honda star. Damon, making his superbike debut in Australia this season, contested all seven rounds of the Australian championships, immediately establishing himself among the leading riders in the glamour class as he ended the series 11th overall. The 24-year-old’s achievements were further recognised with his earning the “Rookie of the Year” award in Australia this season. “It has been a brilliant warm-up really,” Damon says.

4x4 South Island Trip (Eighth Leg) Park & Sell Yard
As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. Here is our eighth and last leg of the trip from Akaroa, near Christchurch, back to the North Island. After a few days of rest and relaxation, including a short trip through Akaroa, on Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula, we headed back through to Christchurch over the Port Hills, before heading back north on State Highway 1. Just south of Amberley we took a 15km detour down the Ashley River through to the coast. Great technical drive with lots of water crossings and no one around.
I must admit, our whole group was already not looking forward to saying our good byes the next night, as the realisation was starting to set in that all good things must come to an end. To spend over four weeks with other families, practically living out of the same tent without incident and with some great stories and yarns that we will never tire of telling, will stay with us for a very long time. I think everyone should at least attempt such a trip once in their lifetime, especially if it is the South Island and with a great group of friends. Trust me, you will never regret it.
