Weekend Wheels December 1: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Majestic Tea Bar and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. January 12: ‘For the Tiddies’ Car Show, Mount Sports Centre, from 9am Shona is going to be there. And she will be showing off her much loved 1960 Ford Prefect 107E with the overhead valve motor. And, appropriately, the car is dripping with femininity. It’s pink and white with red upholstery. The car will be a showpiece at “For the Tiddies”, a car show for all makes and models at the Mount Sports Centre starting 9am on Sunday January 12. The show’s being organised by Mount Maunganui businessman Wayne Brake. He says the show is a family one - suitable for anyone from grandkids to grandparents. Even dogs are welcome. And as the name “For the Tiddies” suggests, the show aims to raise at least $10,000 for breast cancer research and support. It’s a personal cause because members of the businessman’s family have been affected by breast cancer. The show is limited to 300 parks. So that’s a lot of cars to be picked over.

Little car, BIG attitude The new Mazda 2 is a little car looking to make a big impression. Personally, I have had a few relationships with little Mazdas, including a memorable trip in a 323 right through the heart of New Zealand’s largest high country station. That little, red company car could chew up the endless gravel roads with ease. A few years later a white one came into my life and it put up with me for years in all manner of conditions. So, I was pretty excited to meet Mazda’s newest, smallest car – the spruced up, made over Mazda 2. In this instance it was the Limited variant I took for a drive. Mazda is taking things to a new level of sophistication. Rather than focus on the saturated super-mini car market, it is giving discerning buyers a lot more bang for their buck and moving up the market. This wee car is packed full of things you would expect to find in a luxury vehicle, wrapped up in a pretty package and powered by a superefficient 1.5l engine

knob in the central console to give the driver another option for the information and entertainment functions. It has Apple Car Play and Android Auto so you can plug your life straight in.

Lots of tech The power plant for this small hatchback is a 1.5l petrol engine that features all of Mazda’s latest engine enhancements. It certainly gets you off the mark at a fair clip because this is a very light and very smart car. To ensure the new Mazda 2 can foot it at the top end of the market there is an array of new technology enhancements (Mazda calls these i-Activsense technology). New technology includes lane keep assist to keep you between the white lines, radar cruise control (to maintain following distances while on cruise control) and traffic sign recognition The improved braking system has a few extra smart features to reduce the chances of serious accidents and to greatly lessen the consequences of

No distractions The 2019 Mazda 2 has a few style differences from earlier models, most notably in the front grille, headlights and bumpers. It is also a lot quieter thanks to some extra insulation. Inside, it feels sporty and the gorgeous leather and suede seats and interior finishes provide that luxury experience. The sporty look is enhanced by the somewhat retro’, spoked air con’ outlets. A big rev counter dominates the centre of the dash. There is a centrally located touchscreen plus an additional, transparent head-up display that sits above the dash to provide key information like speed and safety alerts close to the driver’s line of sight, ensuring minimal re-focusing. The eyes never really have to leave the road. Everything has been designed to be easy to use and to minimise distractions. There is also a control

braking too late. Essentially this car will brake automatically when a crash is imminent and the driver reacts too late.

Connecting the driver

The sign recognition is brilliant as many of our roads contain constantly varying speed limits so it’s pretty easy to lose track of what speed zone you are in. Other improvements include adaptive LED headlamps which automatically adjust for oncoming traffic and which offer a lot of extr illumination. Mazda is constantly improving every part of its vehicles – from the chassis to the engine and through what it calls its SKYACTIV technology. The 2019 Mazda 2 has all the latest iterations imited L of the SKYACTIV 2 a d z a technology, including Model: M ol r t e p improvements to the e r t li Engine: 1.5 suspension. Even ed e p s ix S the seats have been : n Transmissio automatic tweaked to improve the driver’s connection ) to the car. p h w (108 k 1 8 : r To keep things e w o P 0rpm 0 0 simple Mazda is 4 @ m 1N offering just two Torque: 14 models – the GSX

auto and the Limited auto. For those who like to be different, there are 10 colours to choose from. Our test vehicle was a beautiful ‘soul red crystal metallic’.

Hitting the highway So with the introductions out of the way, the Mazda 2 and I head out of the car yard and onto Hewletts Rd to get properly acquainted. Obviously the Mazda 2 is

a world apart from its older predecessors and in a good way. Being a hatch, it still has all the advantages of flexible luggag space and access but its small size makes it nimble, great on the handling and easy to manoeuvre and park up in town. As I head up into the Kaimai Range, the improved chassis and g-vectoring control come into their own. G-vectoring is another Mazda innovation

which essentially involves a slight deceleration into the corners. Having more weight on the front wheels, into the corners, means better traction and better control. It’s subtle but clever and it makes a difference to the handling. This is a car you can enjoy driving while appreciating all the other comforts and technologies. It is worth taking a look at if you are searching for a small, classy car without the huge price tag.

Long journey to a new street A crowd gathers for the opening and blessing of the revamped Durham St.

Tauranga Mayor Tenby Powell is “relieved and delighted” that Durham Street has reopened. Durham Street and Durham Lane were officially opened last Friday The project has been a 16 month redevelopment of extensive and complex upgrade works that ran into delays. As part of the project, 650 metres of water pipes, 300 metres of gas lines and 150 metres stormwater pipes, were replaced and sewer and electric services upgraded. “If we look to the future it’s a very quiet street now, but in the future is when this campus has a thousand plus students, there could be a really vibrant student enclave down there that will spill to the CBD and I think that will be tremendous.” The new street layout features 1690 plants, and new wooden benches and lighting, while the narrower, raised road provides improved pedestrian accessibility. “The street is inviting and presents a people-focused environment our city hasn’t experienced before,” says Tenby.

“This upgrade has already improved the look and the dynamic of the city centre and ties in nicely with the new University of Waikato campus.” The delays had a significant impact on bus nesses on the street and Tenby says the time it has taken is regretful. “I don’t underestimate the impact that it’s had ... I know that a number have shifted or they’ve had to shift. “I think looking forward we just need to do things in a very different way and we need to be more communicative particularly with local residents about what we’re doing and what the plan is in. “If we run into difficulties and thing happen then we just need to be open and transparent about what those problems are and how we intend to deal with them. “The upgrading of Durham Street and Durham Lane, the Farmers development and other city transformation projects will energise our city centre, and create a better experience for residents and visitors which, over time, will support economic vitality. “We’ll see a very different landscape in fiv Alisha Evans years, that’s for sure.”
