January 12: ‘For the Tiddies’ Car Show, Mount Sports Centre, from 9am
Shona is going to be there. And she will be showing off her much loved 1960 Ford Prefect 107E with the overhead valve motor. And, appropriately, the car is dripping with femininity. It’s pink and white with red upholstery. The car will be a showpiece at “For the Tiddies”, a car show for all makes and models at the Mount Sports Centre starting 9am on Sunday January 12. The show’s being organised by Mount Maunganui businessman Wayne Brake. He says the show is a family one - suitable for anyone from grandkids to grandparents. Even dogs are welcome. And as the name “For the Tiddies” suggests, the show aims to raise at least $10,000 for breast cancer research and support. It’s a personal cause because members of the businessman’s family have been affected by breast cancer. The show is limited to 300 parks. So that’s a lot of cars to be picked over.

A car for the people
It is not often the base model of any particular brand that gets all the attention.
on Cameron Rd, I was intrigued to see just what you get for this tiny price tag. First up is the first impressions. The Selto LX comes in quite a stunning ‘snow white But that’s exactly what’s going on with the pearl’, ‘steel grey’, or in my case an attractive Kia Seltos. The jaw dropper is the entry level ‘cherry black’. There are a couple of dualtone colours available but you have to pay LX when it comes to value for money. another $500 for those. At $25,990, it is way cheaper than similar Personally, I’d be more than happy with SUVs on the market. And that’s not the end the white or the cherry black so it’s a tick of the story. for the colour choices. I also quite like the After being invited to test drive the Seltos big grill at the front and the narrow side by the team at Tauranga Motor Company windows that make for an attractive design. The grill at the back and the protective plate complete what is a great looking vehicle. Inside is roomy with dark cloth trim, a well-considered cabin design, and plenty of storage for cups and tablets and general items. X L Seltos That generous cabin provides l o Model: Kia tr e p HC O D re it loads of headroom and heaps -l 2 Engine: t variable n e ig ll of legroom in the front and in te In n: Transmissio the back, for even the tallest n of people. The rear Price: Intro luggage compartment is large 0 9 ,9 tested $25 compared to similar models.
SPECS
Once the back seats are folded down it allows for a huge amount of gear. In fact, when I was returning the vehicle to the yard later, a man wandered off the street to check out the room in the back to see if his wife’s semi-collapsible wheelchair would fit. No problems there, he reckoned. He ha seen the price and the spec’s online and was pretty excited about it all. So far the Seltos has ticked every box so it’s time to head out of the yard and take it for a drive around Tauranga, out into the Kaimai Range and then back across to The Mount. The Seltos is powered by a 2 litre engine which delivers a pleasing 110kw or 148hp. This is combined with Kia’s new ‘intelligent variable transmission’, which is a lot smoother than most CVT’s. There is plenty of power when you need it and it still provides good average fuel consumption of 6.8 litres per 100km, according to Kia’s specifications Comfort was obviously a big consideration with the design of the base model and the ride quality and handling is excellent. What really surprised me about the LX is the extras you get and the way they perform. For example the active lane keep assist feels reliable and well-designed, nudging you away from the white lines when you get too close. A good positive action that gives you some assurance. Parking sensors in the rear provide
a handy warning when reversing or parking. It also has forward collision avoidance assistance, which means sensors will detect an imminent collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian and trigger an alert. Ultimately the brakes will activate autonomously if the driver doesn’t react in time. That is some serious technology for a vehicle in this price bracket but definitel one of those modern safety features that you wouldn’t want to compromise on. Buyers of the base model also won’t be left wanting when it comes to entertainment. The 8” touchscreen doesn’t have the navigation system of the high spec models but you can connect your smartphone to the screen via Apple Car Play or Android Auto. There are six speakers positioned around the cabin. All in all, the LX is my pick of the line-up when it comes to the Kia Seltos - the introductory price just makes it such good value. It is does create a $10k jump in price to the next model up - the LX-plus – but even that is very well spec’d compared to the competition. Because of this popularity you will have to book in a test drive with the team down at the Tauranga Motor Company. Definitel one to put at the top of the list for those who want value for money. Going above Petrol market set for a ‘shake-up’ and beyond The new director of Warehouse Cars Roger Phillips.
Hi my name is Roger Phillips and I am happy to announce that I have become the director of Warehouse Cars here in Tauranga. As many of you know we have relocated back in May this year to a sunnier yard at 10 Fifteenth Ave Tauranga. I have been in the industry for 15 years and have been with Warehouse Cars for more than six years as sales manager and with the opportunity to own Warehouse Cars, it was definitely time for me to take the wheel. Warehouse Cars has proudly helped well over 3500 drivers in the Bay Of Plenty to get into their new car, and plan on doing this for the years to come. As long as I have time for fishing in between! We pride ourselves on being a family business therefore we do understand the need for our customers and their loved ones to find the right vehicle to suit their lifestyle and needs. We are very proud to say that we are known for going above and beyond to get this done! Come down and see me to discuss your next vehicle or even just a coffee or a chat.
The findings of a study into the fuel market by the Commerce Commission has been met with both optimism and scepticism.
“We accept the Commission’s findings and, as the Prime Minister has said, we’re ready to act on them,” the Minister of Energy and Resources, Megan Woods, said on Thursday last week. The report confirms that consumers are paying higher prices for petrol and diesel than could be expected in a competitive market. “The changes we make will address that, and we expect those benefits will flo through to motorists,” says Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister, Kris Faafoi. The study found a lack of competition in wholesale markets. “A more competitive wholesale market means that low cost brands, like Waitomo and NPD, would be able to access cheaper fuel and pass these benefits onto consumers. Other retailers would be forced to adjust their prices or risk losing customers,” said Dr Woods. The Motor Trade Association (MTA), which represents 870 service station members, says the Commerce Commission findings are “game-changing” It now wants the Government to “step up” and implement the recommendations quickly. “We’ve been raising concerns about the serious lack of competition at the wholesale level and inflexible contracts that prevent resellers switching suppliers, for a long time now.,” says MTA Chief Executive Craig Pomare.
“This sets the scene for the biggest shake-up in the fuel sector since deregulation in 1988.” Mr Pomare hopes decision-makers will focus on making the recommended changes and drop the “unhelpful emotive rhetoric” about motorists being ‘fleeced at the pump’ “Many of our independent service station members have borne the brunt of these uninformed comments, being abused by customers. In a small community the sort of ill-will that’s been generated can be incredibly damaging.
Fuel tax to blame
National’s Transport spokesperson Chris Bishop says the Government is squarely to blame for Kiwis being “fleeced at the petrol pump”, having milked half a billion dollars out of motorists in just two years through its fuel tax hikes, “New Zealanders are being ripped off at the petrol pump and it’s the Government
who is picking their pockets through all the fuel tax hikes it has introduced these past two years. “The extra revenue it has collected from increased fuel excise, road user charges and the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax has already hit $565 million – that’s $319 per household.” New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke was also unimpressed, dismissing the Commerce Commission’s study as “a joke”. “The Government cannot feign concern over the cost of fuel when it is directly responsible for the near-50 per cent that is tax.” “The Government prohibited the Commerce Commission from addressing the cost of tax in its inquiry, so it’s no wonder that the Commission has come out with such weak recommendations, like putting stickers on fuel caps.” Daniel Hutchinson
