Weekend Wheels November 21 – Women of Empire Exhibition

A unique international costume exhibition paying tribute to the lives of more than 30 women of New Zealand and Australia in WWI. The exhibition will be held at the Thames War Memorial Civic Centre on Mary St from 10am to 4pm. It highlights the stories of women with training who served as vets, doctors, nurses, Red Cross or motorcycle messengers, as well as the ordinary extraordinary women who stayed home to look after families, livestock, businesses and made comfort clothing and food for the soldiers abroad.

2016 – Elite MotorSport Academy

Applications for the 2016 Elite MotorSport Academy are now open and close on March 18, 2016. The successful applicants will attend the Elite Academy camp in Dunedin, scheduled for the week of July 3 to 10, 2016. The camp will provide a one-week intensive “in camp programme of physical and educational training assistance package to up to nine MotorSport New Zealand recognised race or rally competitors who have already demonstrated the ability to excel in their chosen motorsport discipline”. because these new luxury vehicles are so powerful – and so quiet – that you can have the radio going and being enjoying the music and the drive, and have little idea of how those good feelings are being translating to your minutely increasing speed. By the end of the day I had become very used to looking at these two projected figures and as a quick and useful measurement and reference, it was excellent. Driving the Volvo was a fairly serene experience. I felt safe knowing that Volvo has built its reputation on safety, security and driver support. Appreciating this car was designed for the ultimate comfort and care of occupants; it’s hard to fault really. It’s almost clinical in its execution on the road – you get exactly what you expect – a polished, perfect performance. It’s great from an emissions perspective that it stops the engine at intersections and turned itself back on once the accelerator is engaged. Driving around town was totally smooth and the engine purred with a very pleasant low and confident rhythmic hum. Handling just like a road car, even the bigger mass of a seven-seater felt normal. It was only when it came to parking that you realise how big these beasts are compared to everyday sedans and hatchbacks. The new XC90 is packed with intuitive safety technologies as standard. As well as supporting in the daily act of driving, the gear helps avoid or mitigate collisions and protects occupants in the event of an incident. One such example is the vehicle constantly monitors its proximity to others. If you get too close too soon, the brakes automatically pre-prime so when you get around to reacting yourself physically, a lot of the shock has been potentially taken out of any impact.

And if you start drifting into the wrong lane – then gently the car guides itself back to the correct path. Knowing that the Volvo is looking after itself can make you feel either clinically disconnected from it, or totally relaxed in the realisation that all you have to do as a driver is make a decision about where you want to go, and head on out. Volvo vehicles are manufactured in Sweden and most of the cars passing through the Tauranga dealership are pre-sold. There is a wide selection of add-on accessories available. About half the cars sold by Duncan and Ebbett have specially chosen accessories added by individual buyers. Those requirements are forwarded to Sweden so the cars can be built and assembled to suit the exacting requirements of the buyer. The new engineering of the XC90 incorporates Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and innovative four-cylinder Drive-E engine technology. The XC90 Momentum I drove had Blind Spot Information System, heated front seats, and 20” wheels with a double-spoke diamond cut matte tech black design. The Driver Support Pack, worth $3990, included 360 degree surround view parking camera, adaptive cruise control with lane keeping aid and pilot assist, and head-up display. It also had roof racks, mud flaps and side step running boards. Volvo Cars’ flagship XC90 was awarded the title 2015 Company Car of the Year (large SUV category) in Germany – beating German car manufacturers on their home turf. The win was based on the overall competence of the car in the large SUV segment.
