Accordingtoacouncilstatement,the reviewwillsimplifythefarestructure andbalanceaffordabilitywithgrowing servicecosts.

“Withrapidgrowthintheregion, demandforreliablepublictransport continuestorise.

“Meetingthisdemandrequires sustainablefundingwhichisprimarily achievedthroughgovernmentsubsidies, farerevenue,rates,andadvertising.”

“However,newnationalexpectations requireallregionstorecoveragreater shareofcoststhroughfaresandthirdpartyrevenuetomaintainfinancial stabilitylong-term.”

PublicTransportCommitteechair andBOPRCcouncillorAndrewvon Dadelszensaidthroughthisreview, theregionalcouncilaimstodevelopa simpler,moreresilientfaresystemthat balancesthesefinancialgoalswiththe needsofthecommunity.

“Ourgoalisastraightforward,fair,fare structurethatservesourgrowingregion.

“Bysimplifyingfaresandintroducing optionsforfrequentriders,thisreview willmakepublictransportworkbetter foreveryone.”

Keyfocusareas

Threekeyfocusareasofthereview include:Rewardingregularridersby introducingoptionsthatmakepublic transportanattractive,cost-effective choiceforfrequentusers;improving accessibilitybycreatingafare structurethatisclear,easytouse, andconsistentacrosstheregion;and workingonfinancialsustainability viaensuringfarestructuressupportthe costsofmaintainingandexpandinga reliablenetwork.

Withtheregionalcouncilaskingthe publictogivefeedbackbusfarereview byDecember2,TheWeekendSunhit citybus-stopstofindoutwhatpassengers thoughtaboutit.

TaurangaresidentsRachealWilliams andHayesWinn-Tohill,whowere stationedattheDurhamStbusstops, takethebusbecauseneitherown avehicle.

“IhaveamotorbikeandIcan’ttakeher onit,”saidWinn-Tohill.Thepairlive rurallyandonlytakethebustogetinto town.Theysaidtheywouldbeinclined

totakethebusmoreofteniftherewas betteraccessibilityforruralareas.

Unreliable

NeeveWilson,whowasalsowaiting orherbustoarriveatDurhamSt,takes thebuseveryonetotwoweeksbecause shedoesn’thaveherrestricteddriver’s licenceyet.

Whenaskedwhyshedoesn’tusethe busesmoreoften,shesaid:“They’re prettyunreliable”.

OutofsevenpeopleTheSunasked aboutthecitybuses,manymentioned howtheyfoundthemunreliable.

HighschoolfriendsJestyandFreya usedtotakethebusdaily.Theynolonger takethebusasoftenduetothecostand onlymakingoccasionaltripstoschoolor sportspractices.Theysaidtheywouldbe moremotivatedtotakethebusiffares werecheaper.

TaurangaresidentCraigGoodwin,who wassittinginhiswheelchairatthebus stop,saidthecity’spublictransportwas fairlyunreliable.“Youdon’tplanyourday aroundthebusesthat’sforsure.”

BOPRCpublictransportdirectorOliver Haycocksaidtheimplementationofanewfare structureintheBayofPlentywouldalignwiththe introductionofMotuMove,anationalticketing solutionsettorolloutnationwidelate-2025.

HaycocksaidMotuMovewillgivecustomers newflexiblepaymentoptionsnationwide,

includinguseofdebitandcreditcardsanddigital walletssuchasApplePayandGooglePay,as wellasprepaidMotuMovecardsandtickets,all makingiteasierthanevertousepublictransport.

“AligningwithMotuMovegivesusthechance tobuildasystemthat’snotonlystraightforward butalsofuture-focused,”saidHaycock.“We’re committedtomakepublictransportmore convenientanduser-friendlyacrosstheBOP.”

Self--made skatebooardar

Two Tauranga students have won skateboards emblazoned with their own designs – after entering a competition to celebrate a skateboard collection that takes place in the city’s future museum.

TwoTaurangastudentshavewon skateboardsemblazonedwiththeirown designs–afterenteringacompetitionto celebrateaskateboardcollectionthattakes placeinthecity’sfuturemuseum.

Mount Maunganui Intermediate student Savannah Quinn, 13, and Matua School Year 5 pupil Minhye Kim, 9, were among 260 children who entered the Tauranga City Council’s Design a Deck competition. The competition was held in conjunction with an exhibition of skateboarding history in Tauranga Library.

TaurangaMuseumcuratorFionaKeansaid thecompetitionnotonlyservedtohighlightthe skateboardcollectionthatwillmakeuppartofthe permanentexhibitioninTaurangaMuseumwhen itopensin2028,butitwasalsoanopportunityto collaboratewiththecommunity.

“It’saboutlocalsbeingabletoparticipateand tobepartofsomething,”saidKean.“Whenit comestothemuseum,weneverwantittobea one-wayconversation.”

Thenumberofentriesandvarietyofdesigns forcedformerproskateboarderGeorgina Matthews,whogrewupinŌtūmoetai,topick twowinners.“Thefirstdesignremindedmeof whenIfirstbegancompetinginternationally, andhowimportantculturalrepresentationwas forme,”saidMatthews.“Ifeltthatthedesign wasabeautifulreflectionofourcountryand culture,andIlovedthecompositionoftheTino Rangatiratangaflag,koru,andfernscontrasting. IcouldpicturethisbeingacoolboardforaKiwi athleteintheOlympicssomeday.” Savannahwassurprisedherdesignwaschosen.

MatuaSchoolpupilMinhyeKimandMount MaunganuiIntermediatestudentSavannah Quinnwiththeirskateboarddesigns.

“Iwasnotexpectingtowin.Ioccasionally skateboard,butIthinkthiswillprobablymakeme wanttostartdoingitmore.”

MatthewsdescribedMinhye’sdesignasstanding outforitscreativeuseoftheentireboardandits funcharacter.

“It’sdefinitelyaboardIcouldpicturebeinga reallypopularpickinskatestores.”

Keansaidthefutureskateboardexhibition,which isstillondisplayuntilNovember29,wasmade possiblebytheacquisitionoftheDustyWardell collectionofsurfboardsthatcamewithhisvintage skateboardsandmemorabiliaincludingoneby pioneeringMtMaunganuicompany,Cahoot.

“Whileskateboardinggoeshand-in-handwith ourcity’ssurfculture,skateboardersarepartofan increasinglydiverseandinclusivecommunity,”said Kean.“TaurangaMuseumisexcitedtocapture andsharetheirstories.”

EveryyearonWhiteRibbon Day,November25,agroupof TaurangaresidentsclimbMauaoto commemorateBritishbackpacker MonicaCantwell.

Thisyearthey’reinvitinganyone who’dliketojointhemtomeet atthebaseofMauaoat7amnext Monday,November25,toclimb andattendtheannualinformal memorialservicenearthesummit. Monicawasoneweekintoa triptoNewZealandwhen,while walkingthenorthernsummittrack onMauaoonNovember20,1989, shewasrapedandstrangled.Her bodywasfoundthreedayslater afterfriendsreportedhermissing.

Themansentencedtolifein prisonforhermurder,Charles JohnCoulam,wasarresteda monthlater.

“Wehaveaserviceupthere everyyear,torememberMonica Cantwell,ayoungEnglish manuhiri(visitor)whoshouldhave beensafeonourmaungabutlost herlifeintragiccircumstances,” saidBuddyMikaere,whoorganises theannualremembranceservice.

CleartheAirMountMaunganuiaimstoimproveair qualitysignificantlyinMountMaunganuiforallthose whowork,liveandvisittherebyapplyingcommunityledpressure,andformingpartnershipswithindustries, councilsandgovernmenttotransformthecity.

FounderEmmaJonessaidthefundraiser–amovie screeningof‘Moana2’atUnitedCinemasBayfairon Thursday,November28–willraisefundstocoverthe group’srecentlegalexpenses.

“Wehavetoraiseabitofmoneytocoverlegalbills andrecentappearancesatcourt,”Jonessaid.

“Wehadsomefunding,butthatwasjustaone-off, andnowthatfundismostlyoutofmybusiness.”

JonesmovedtoTaurangain2016and,after noticingthestenchintheair,decidedtodosomething aboutit.By2019shehadsetupCleantheAir MountMaunganuiasacharitabletrust.

“Therealisation[was]thatyou’retheonlyonewho canchangeit,soyoucaneitheracceptitortrytodo somethingaboutit,”Jonessaid.

CleartheAirMountMaunganuibelievestheair aroundtheindustrialareaofMountMaunganui containsharmfullevelsofvolatileorganiccompounds, sulphurdioxide,hydrogensulphide,nitrogendioxide, benzene,methylbromide,heavymetalfragments, carbonmonoxide,andparticulatematter(dust)PM10 andPM2.5.

“It’saconstantstenchoutthere,”Jonessaid. Buttheneedlehasstartedtoshift,withindustry aroundTaurangatakingheedandmakingslowbut steadyimprovements,Jonessaid.

Thenew‘BreakingBarriers’studywas commissionedbyAgeConcernAucklandtohelp addressthegrowinghealthcarecrisiswithinthe growingdemographicofKiwisaged65-plusand interviewedrespondentsacrosstheAucklandand BayofPlentyregions.

Interconnectedfactors

Theresearchfound59%ofparticipantshad recentlyfeltlonelyorsociallyisolated,with30%, ofthoserespondentsexperiencingthesefeelings frequentlyorallthetime.Thestudyauthors saidthefindingspaintacomplexpictureof interconnectedfactorscontributingtoloneliness andhighlighta‘hiddenepidemic’impactingthe wellbeingofolderadults.

“Theresearchidentifiesfinancialinsecurityasa majordriverofloneliness,particularlyforthose strugglingwiththerisingcostoflivingandlimited retirementsavings.

“Healthconcerns,includingthelengthywait timesfacedby67,000Kiwisforelectivesurgeries, andescalatinghealthinsurancepremiums,also playasignificantrole,leadingtoanxietyand impactingsocialparticipation.

“Inaddition,lackofaccesstoaffordableand suitablehousingwasacontributingfactor,with thereportfindingmanyolderNewZealanders arepricedoutofthehousingmarket,aremore thantwiceaslikelytoliveinpoorlymaintained dwellings,andareforcedtochoosebetween unsuitablelivingarrangementsorremainingin

homes that are no longer appropriate for their needs,”saidtheauthors.

Thereportalsohighlightstheprofoundimpact ofglobalisationandchangingfamilydynamicson socialconnection.“Thetrendofadultchildren movingoverseasforworkorotheropportunities leavesmanyolderadultsgeographicallyand emotionallyisolatedfromtheirlovedones.”
