Toyota recalls 26,050 vehicles Toyota New Zealand is recalling 26,050 Corolla, Picnic, Yaris and RAV4 vehicles for a possible fault with the driver and front seat passenger airbags. The recall is due to the potential abnormal deployment of the airbags and is a small part of a worldwide recall of 5.089 million Toyotas fitted with airbags from outside supplier Takata. Takata also supplies airbags to a number of other Japanese and European motor manufacturers, which have been the subject of recalls in recent years. The vehicles specifically affected by the recall in New Zealand are driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side airbags in Yaris and RAV4 manufactured between 2003 and 2005. There are 2760 RAV4s and 3122 Yaris subject to the recall. Customer Services general manager Spencer Morris says Toyota NZ is not aware of any incidents in New Zealand where airbags in vehicle affected by the recall have deployed abnormally in an accident. Out on the open road the Peugeot 4008 rolled along with the DOHC engine, giving plenty of suggestions of the power beneath the bonnet. The six-speed Continuously Variable Transmission gearbox sits awaiting a kick-start to high-tail it along the highway. The steering wheel paddle shifts add to the feeling of a driver’s car. The key start and manual operation of the settings of the very comfortable front seats were a refreshing change for the grey-headed reviewer. Other practical touches were the ease of accessing both the bonnet and the boot, with easy-to-find levers. Plenty of leg room in the rear seats comes without compromising the big 384 litre boot. And further rear space can be provided by dropping down the rear seats, which increases stowage to a huge 1219 litres of space. Backing the Peugeot Allure is the 4008 peace of mind guarantee. Ranger keeps on winning

On Saturday, May 9, three women from the same family were killed in a car crash on State Highway 2 near Ainsworth Rd at Te Puna. They were just three of 10 people killed during what’s been described as one of New Zealand’s deadliest weekends on the roads. Debate is now raging on how to improve safety on our roads. There’s been a call from Road Policing assistant commissioner Dave Cliff for lower speed limits on certain open roads being made. But Prime Minister John Key says he doesn’t support the lowering of speed limits, adding alcohol, speeding and fatigue were the key issues for road safety. So what about here in the Bay of Plenty? Do we need lower speed limits?

Bay of Plenty road policing manager Kevin Taylor says there’s no simple, singular answer to this the problem. But he believes if speeds were reduced it wouldn’t just be a case of putting up a sign with a new number on it. “The speed limit has to reflect the environment,” says Kevin. “Generally speaking, on the open roads we have a blanket 100km/h speed limit. “But there are areas within the Bay that you physically cannot drive at 100km/h, not even safely.” According to Kevin, Police research suggests no matter what speed is displayed, drivers will travel at a speed which feels right to them. But unfortunately “what a lot of New Zealand drivers feel is a safe speed actually isn’t”. “We also know speed is the single biggest determiner in whether a crash will be survivable or not.”

The Ford Ranger continues to be Kiwis’ favourite ute in 2015 after beating the competition handily and opening up the gap on the Toyota Hilux. Provisional sales figures show the Ford Ranger was May’s top selling ute with 487 sold, leaving its nearest competitor, the Hilux, trailing behind by more than 100 vehicles in the year-to-date figures. “We are of course heading into a very busy and highly competitive time for the ute market, with Fieldays coming up,” says Ford New Zealand managing director Corey Holter. “So it’s great to see more people are choosing the best ute for their money – the Ford Ranger.” The Ford Ranger is also New Zealand’s most awarded truck, winning numerous accolades every year since launching in New Zealand. Trophies won to date include NZ4WD Magazine’s ‘4WD Utility of the Year 2014’ and ‘Overall 4WD of the Year 2014’, plus the AA’s and Motoring Writers’ Guild ‘Best in Class’ for 2012, 2013 and 2014. Corey says Ford NZ is positioned to extend the success of the Ranger across its other vehicle lines with a record number of smart new vehicles being introduced this year. “It’s also a busy year full stop for Ford New Zealand,” says Corey. “We’re also launching a record number of new vehicles in 2015, in almost every segment. “Whether you’re looking for a new vehicle, just interested in new vehicles, or you’re the competition – Ford is the one to watch in 2015.” In 2015 Ford NZ has introduced the New Ford Falcon XR8 and XR6, the New Ford Territory, All New Ford Mondeo, New Focus ST and Focus Wagon. These will be followed by the rest of the New Focus range, the All New Ford Everest, the New Ranger, and the All New Mustang at the end of the year.
