Townley always a proud Kiwi battler Bay of Plenty rider Ben Townley should feel right at home when he lines up to represent New Zealand at the annual Motocross of Nations in France at the end of this month. The 30-year-old Tauranga-based former Taupo rider came out of retirement recently to become one of the three riders who will fly the silver fern flag at this ‘Olympic Games of motocross’ at Ernée, in the north-west of France, on the weekend of September 26-27. Despite listing his status now

as semi-retired, the former world, United States and New Zealand champion adds a great deal of experience and plenty of punch to the Kiwi campaign. He has been New Zealand’s most successful individual at the Motocross of Nations

(MXoN) and the only Kiwi to celebrate a race win (two of them, in fact). Perhaps significantly, it was exactly 10 years ago the MXoN was last held at the undulating Ernée circuit and Ben performed there with much credit as well. Riding a KTM in the open class, Ben won one of the three finals races at Ernée in 2005, claiming victory in the combined open class/ MX2 (250cc) class race, and then backing it up by finishing runner-up, behind US legend Ricky Carmichael, in the open class/MXGP leg. Team New Zealand finished fourth overall on that occasion. The following year, when the MXoN was staged near Winchester, in southern England, Ben was on the smaller 250cc Kawasaki and had his work cut out against the 450cc open class and MXGP bikes, but it was better overall result for the team.

The team’s MX2 (250cc) class rider in England, Ben managed 3-5 finishes in his two outings and, as a team, the Kiwi trio claimed a podium finish, third overall of the 20 qualifying nations. Ben scored a race win again when the MXoN was staged in Denver, Colorado, in 2010, this time riding a 450cc Honda to win the open class/MX2 clash. But it all went sour in Ben’s next race when, while running in second place, he severely twisted his ankle and was forced to withdraw. Unfortunately, as a team, the Kiwis ended up only eighth overall that year. But, if Ben can be even half as good this time around as he was in France in 2005, or in the United States in 2010, then New Zealand’s hopes will definitely be bright in less than two weeks’ time. His teammates for the 2015 campaign in France are also vastly experienced MXoN riders, Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper and Mangakino’s Kayne Lamont. Unfortunately, neither Ben, nor Cody or Kayne were available for the MXoN when it was staged in Latvia last year, where Team New Zealand failed to qualify among the top 20 countries and therefore slipped well down the world Andy McGechan rankings.

The cat’s whiskers

Jaguar has a long and varied history, from motorcycle sidecars in the 1920s, through restyled Austins, to when the car maker adopted the Jaguar name in 1935 and their SS models became the SS Jaguars. Jaguar has always been synonymous with style, flair and beauty. Over the years, Jaguars became the vehicle of choice for rock stars, crime lords, such as the Kray twins, a famous TV detective and pretty much anyone who is anyone. And now, Jaguar has released the all-new XE,

the vehicle of choice for a new generation. Jaguar claims that the all-new XE is the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon car that Jaguar has ever produced. That’s a lot of words for ‘awesome’. It’s got the looks, the style and yes, it’s good on fuel too! The new XE takes a few styling cues from the sibling XF. This styling is probably the most aggressive we’ve seen from Jaguar in a while, and screams Jaguar of old – that’s a good thing, a very good thing. I’ve always had a soft spot for the big cats and I love what’s happened here. The best thing about this look? It fits in

anywhere. City streets, country road, outside your grans house or even at your favourite winery while you have a spot of lunch. The XE comes with a few options for power. There’s two diesel variants and three petrol variants, all of which are turbo-charged. Our test model, with a 2.0L turbo-charged petrol engine, was astounding. You’d think a big car like this would need a big engine to make any sense, but this little unit packs a big punch. From zero to 100km/hr is achievable in just 7.7 seconds, or 6.8 seconds in the updated version. The 3.0L turbo-charged power plant can whip you up to speed in just 5.1 seconds! Talk about instant face-lift! It helps that the new Jaguar body shell is 75 per cent aluminium (Jaguars Aluminum-Intensive Architecture). Now, you may think – aluminium, so what? Well let me tell you, this one actually is rocket science. Developed by experts from the aerospace industry, the super strong shell uses a completely new aluminium – RC5754 to be precise. This makes the car rigid and light, two essentials for any sports car. Stepping inside, you know this car is uniquely Jaguar. Superbly appointed, full leather as far as the eye can see, comfort, options galore and pretty much everything you

would expect. The ride quality is smooth, sharp and balanced. The only cabin noise is the faint wafting as you glide along and a subtle roar from the engine, which is toned to sound nice but not at all intrusive. The little things on this car make a difference. Our test model was the XE Prestige, complete with mood lighting, a stunning sound system and detailed finishes that just add the special touch. The on-board touch screen is also a work of art. These systems are appearing in most new cars these days, but the quality of the display is almost cinematic, and so easy to use. Well thought out, well designed and very fitting for the vehicle. So much comes with this car that the optional extras are a little thin on the ground. Apart from a selection of wheels and trim options, the majority are in the comfort and safety area, such as heated steering wheel, climate seats (can be heated or cooled, a seat for all seasons!) or a powered boot lid. Now to the important part: price. I know what you’re thinking – Jaguar, prestige, expensive. Think again. The XE range starts at just $74,900 for the XE Pure, to $106,000 for the range topping XE S. When you take in to consideration build quality, detailed and high caliber fit-out, options as standard and the pure enjoyment of owning this car, the price is very reasonable. Top up any other car in this category with options to match and you’d be paying the same, if not more – and even then, it simply wouldn’t be a Jaguar. Jay Burston

Campbell drives hard in NZ Rally Tauranga’s Phil Campbell continues his great form at this year’s Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship. The Mitsubishi driver has once again bagged a solid haul of points at the Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel, held recently.

Phil headed to the Coromandel looking to repeat last year’s round win at the Whitianga-based event and felt the first stage had gone well, only to find he was only eighth fastest, with a time just over eight seconds off the pace. Special stage two saw Phil head back towards where he wanted to be as he recorded the second fastest time in The Roofing Store Mitsubishi to move him back up to fourth place, only one tenth of a second off a podium spot.

After the service, Phil and co-driver Venita Fabbro really settled into their rhythm and a pair of second fastest times meant they took second place, a position they would secure across stages five and six. A quick blast around the streets of Whitianga on the super special stage resulted in a stage win for Phil before a conservative run to the finish enabled the 28-year-old to secure another solid second place and the valuable points to go with it. “It was another great result for us, the car

ran really well and although we couldn’t quite challenge for the win, a solid finish near the front of the field is what we needed,” Phil says. “Now we’ll head to Wairarapa in a strong position to secure second place in the championship and take advantage of any problems Ben might have.” The Campbell Rally Sport team now turn their attention to the sixth and final round of the NZRC, Rally Wairarapa, Greg Taipari on October 3.
