Not all about the looks

It’s good looking and smart. The all-new Nissan NP300 Navara is the whole package.

Short girl problem number two: I can’t reach the pedals. But the Navara’s eight-way power driver seat with slide/reclining/height adjustment and power lumbar support solved my dilemma. there’s the press button sunroof and a rear power sliding window. Now let’s start the engine. With no turn of a key, just a push of the engine start button, I was driving this turbo-powered beast with ease. Foot to the pedal – now that I can reach them – I find this bad boy is made for the open road. This wildcat shows how power, acceleration and fuel efficiency cannot just coexist, but thrive, with advanced technology helping to squeeze the most performance out of every drop of fuel. Whether you’re looking to pull a heavy load at work, or for a weekend away, the all-new Nissan NP300 Navara makes it easy. All of the diesel engine models can muster up the grunt to pull a massive 3500kg braked towing capacity. Powered by an advanced 140kW twinturbo diesel engine, the new Navara has a small turbo to get you moving and a larger one to keep you going strong, giving you best in class fuel economy. And with five-link rear suspension it is as capable and comfortable off-road as it is on road. Turn on cruise control, or be in control using the seven-speed automatic with manual mode. A small body in a big ute has it’s difficulties going forward, let alone going backwards. But putting the reversing camera and sensors on make using the Navara in reverse stressfree. Now for my favourite part, the accessories. They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but with the amount of accessories the Navara has, I’d say she comes close to it. I was like a little girl at Christmas pressing all of the buttons.

The new Navara keeps you in the loop with the HDD satellite Nissan Navigation System, Bluetooth hands-free calling, plus Bluetooth audio streaming, single CD player with MP3 capability, AM/FM radio, AUX and iPod/USB connectivity. With NissanConnect, the all-new Nissan NP300 Navara becomes your smartphone’s best friend, connecting you to more than just the road. Because now, your own hand-picked music and more all come along for the ride, working seamlessly together through your smartphone and the 7” colour touch-screen on your dash. With six speakers, you can have Taylor Swift or Beyoncé on full blast. You may not be safe from the girly lyrics, but you’re in for a safe and secure ride with the new Navara. The model has some outstanding safety features, including seven airbags in the driver and front passenger seats, front and side impact SRS airbags, driver knee airbags and front to rear SRS curtain airbags. The all-new Nissan NP300 Navara’s host of safety features also include Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). With a three-year warranty/100,000km and 24-hour roadside assistance, this brand new model is your safest bet yet. But there’s more to this new model than its good looks. You just need to look under the hood to really get to know this vehicle. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m popping my heels back on and I’m off to paint my nails in the new Nissan NP300 Navara. Four fine ladies of Rangiuru Road Sue Weld admits to having a touch of the ‘flapper’ about her. Flapper? They were a new breed of liberated women that emerged from the roaring ‘20s. A flapper smoked, drank, danced and voted. She hoisted her hemline provocatively to her knees, bobbed her hair, wore excessive make-up and went to petting parties. In short, flappers broke all the social and sexual norms. But I am sure Sue, this elegant and mature former first lady of Western Bay of Plenty local politics, would tick few – if any – of those boxes. There is dignity and decency here, and Sue wasn’t even born in the 1920s; nowhere near it. Flappers were also giddy, took risks and drove cars. Finally, we get the flapper connection. “We dress in the period of our cars,” says Sue. There just happens to be a 1922 Austin Tourer 20/4 sitting in her three-berth garage. Tucked in beside a 1929 Austin Carlton Saloon and a 1927 Austin Windsor Saloon. Including Sue, that’s four fine ladies. What’s a 20/4? Obvious question I thought. “Twenty horsepower, four cylinder”. This flapper knows her onions from her internal combustion engines. “You impressed?” she asks. More humiliated, I think. Sue’s a girl, so you can understand her being intoxicated by the romance and high style of ‘flapperism’. “I loved dressing up – the finery, the beads and braid – all very feminine.” All very 1920s, all very ‘flapper-ish’ without the liberal behaviours perhaps. All the style without the brash substance.

Flappers thought and behaved like men. In this case, the man was Graeme Weld, Sue’s husband. He got in the moment with straw boater, striped blazer and white trousers. Very dapper, very foppish. On high days and holidays, Sue and Graeme would clamber into their frippery, jump into the Carlton with their 1MAYOR plates, and do the all the mayoral things expected of a long-serving Mayor of Western Bay of Plenty. Sue loved the occasion, the public life and the limelight. “We would lead the parades. Children would point, and mums and dads would ‘Ooh and ahh’.” Graeme was the consummate politician. He knew the power of PR and a good photo ‘op’. On one level he loved his cars, but on another he was very aware of what they brought to his public profile. Did I tell you the 1MAYOR was originally bought as the mayoral car for Christchurch? “Chauffeur driven,” says Sue. It was also owned by the 12th Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir John Hall. A lot of history on four wheels. So the Welds had their farm, their vintage cars, their kids and a firm rein on the mayoralty. But fate was the unmanageable thing – Graeme was struck down by cancer seven years ago. “I went from a very public life to a very private life” says Sue. And so did the cars. The Tourer and two saloons haven’t been out of the garage for more than a year. “I was robbed of my retirement plans and my best friend.” Tears well up and trickle. “Damn it, I knew this would happen.” She even weeps with dignity. Graeme’s with us. He’s looking down with

Sue Weld with the beloved Austins.

pride from a large portrait on the wall. “He wasn’t a handsome man, but I loved him.” She says they – being Graeme, Sue and the vintage cars – were planning to have a “fan-bloody-tastic” time in retirement. “The cars are what bound us. That’s what he and I had that was special to just him and me. That’s what we did together.” They aren’t just relics, but spiritual, romantic, binding icons. “Girls, we have a visitor.” We enter the garage and Sue greets three inanimate objects like daughters. They are three cars that money can’t buy. “We brought these things back from the brink. They are our legacy and could easily be running in another hundred years.” And while Sue is here, they stay right here. They are not for sale. “What’s that for?” I ask of an elaborate

nickel contraption in the middle of the steering when. It’s more of an artwork. “Ignition advance,” says Sue. Of course. And while she can drive one of the cars, she doesn’t. “I don’t have the confidence to drive on my own. It’s going to be up to other people to use them.” In the meantime she’s happy going to something called Noggin ‘n’ Natter – where Tauranga Vintage Car Club buffs outdo each other with hard luck stories, the worst breakdowns and most expensive repairs. Sue’s back on song. “We love it when things go wrong. We love to get out, get under and get on.” “Getting out, getting under and getting on.” Is that a new-fangled flapper dance craze? Sue just wishes she had Graeme to do it with.

It’s been a busy few months for organiser Colin McCabe and his team, who’ve been toiling away just to make sure this year’s festival is the best one yet. Colin says they’ve received 200 vehicles entries, which is slightly down on last year’s numbers, but Kiwis’ do have a propensity for leaving things to the last minute. “What we think this will mean is a bit of a rush of registrations over the next few weeks

so please have some patience with us! “If you’ve pre-registered and paid you will receive your pack including the programme, window card, and Grahamstown Gathering sticker if you’re going to that and a couple of other bits and pieces.” Colin says there’s been a few changes to the 2015 event and recommends punters check out the finalised programme on the Brits at the Beach website – www.britsatthebeach.co.nz

Stop the presses

This month, the big news for Brits at the Beach and its fans is that the festival was granted $24,435 for the next two years through Thames-Coromandel District Council’s Major Events Fund. It’s the first time since the ThamesCoromandel council adopted its 2013 Events Strategy that it’s had the opportunity

to invest in major events longer than a year. Colin says they’ll receive about $12k in the 2015-16 financial year, then another $10k in 2016-17, subject to a 15 per cent increase in participation in 2016. “We’re thrilled Brits at the Beach has been awarded a grant from the ThamesCoromandel District Council,” says Colin. “We wish to thank all those that were involved in the decision-making process for having the belief in what we’re doing. “The money is earmarked for marketing the event to attract more visitors and increase attendance and we have a major marketing campaign starting this month with our new media sponsors, Sun Media.”

Hearts as big as a Bentley

When established back in 2009, at the heart of the Brits at the Beach Festival was to create an opportunity to boost economic development in the area, plus support local community groups. A feature of the festival from year-toyear is The Great British Motoring Show and Village Fete, held every year on the Saturday, with all profits donated to local junior sports clubs. In 2014 the Village Fete raised money for the Whangamata Pony Club, while the Whangamata Junior Soccer Club was 2013’s recipient. “We wish to confirm the local junior sports group we have chosen to support with the profits of the Village Fete is The Whangamata Gymnastic Club. So please join us and support our local kids. The Classic Cover Brits at the Beach Festival sponsored by Sun Media returns to Whangamata from October 8 - 11. Z Energy cuts fuel prices by two cents

On Monday of this week, Z Energy once again cut fuel prices, this time by two cents per litre on all fuels, the sixth reduction in a row in the last six weeks. For the first time since April, 91 octane is under $2 and currently costs 197.9c per litre, while 95 octane is 206.9c per litre. Diesel prices were also cut and are now sitting on 119.9c per litre. It follows on from Z cutting fuels prices twice last week – on Tuesday they cut prices by two cents, then on the Thursday cut them by a further three. AA spokesperson Mark Stockdale says, interestingly, refined commodity prices have not fallen since Friday, although oil has. “In fact they’ve gone up,” says Mark. “But as AA PetrolWatch noted earlier, fuel company margins were high enough to justify another price cut anyway. “It’s also worth noting that refined commodity prices – the price fuel importers pay – are 60 per cent higher than oil prices, thanks in part to global demand and a lack of excess refined fuel production.” To date, petrol is down 14cpl, while diesel is also down 11cpl due to commodity prices having not fallen quite as much.
