Vehicle registrations to drop in price
Winter best time to teach learner drivers Many parents are understandably apprehensive about letting their children learn to drive in winter as the road conditions can be much worse than summer. For a starter, there’s less daylight, visibility can be severely reduced, and for parents who act as supervisors the whole process can be more stressful. But Darren Cottingham of DrivingTests. co.nz says learning to drive in winter has its advantages. “By using a qualified driving instructor, your son or daughter will get expert advice and guidance while learning in conditions that are more challenging,” says Darren. “If a driver learns in summer, their first winter could be a difficult experience with wet leaves, deep puddles, black ice and sunstrike. “If they have managed to get their restricted licence before then, these could all be potentially new experiences to be tackled alone.” DrivingTests.co.nz is a project to help New Zealanders learn the road code more effectively whether for car, motorbike or heavy vehicle. Darren says the other advantage of having another licenced driver in the house is you
won’t have to turn out on a cold day to take them places. If your teen doesn’t have a driving licence yet, the first stage is to get the learner licence. “Once your child has a learner licence it’s time to get a qualified driving instructor so you don’t pass on your bad habits. “When choosing a driving instructor, meet several to ensure you have rapport; a bad experience at the outset will make it harder for your teen to learn. It’s best not to choose on price. “Get recommendations from friends and community members as it’s ultimately cheaper to get a more effective driving instructor rather than a poor instructor that heavily discounts.” An instructor will tell your son or daughter when they are ready to take a practical test to get their restricted licence. At this point, your teen can drive on their own, albeit with restrictions, and should have plenty of experience in challenging conditions to help keep them safe. To see the NZ Transport Agency’s full list of requirements to get a licence, visit: www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/ Learner drivers can practice Road Code theory and sit practice tests at www.drivingtests.co.nz By David Tauranga
Bay of Plenty drivers have less than one month left until a new ACC risk rating approach will see vehicle registration charges reduce. From July 1 ACC’s vehicle risk ratings will be used to calculate ACC motor vehicle levies, with light passenger vehicles assigned to a band between
1 (most injury risk) and 4 (least injury risk). This change will result in the ACC levy portion of vehicle registrations going down by $40-$170 depending on the vehicle. Owners can contact ACC on 0800 222 776 with any questions or a problem with the risk
rating of their vehicle. To find out what band applies to a vehicle, people can download a booklet ACC has developed to look up your vehicle’s make, model and year, or go to www.rightcar.govt.nz and enter a vehicle’s licence plate number.

dual zone air conditioning and has LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers. Out on the open road, the Triton 4WD excelled with relatively light touch of the steering wheel and zipped away when the foot was applied to the accelerator. The manual six-speed transmission is light years away from the manual cars of old Sid drove in his youth. We took the Mitsubishi vehicle slightly off road with the Triton 4WD itching to utilise the Super Select 4WD. Coincidently, the Triton 4WD is just one of two utility vehicles available in the country, where the 4WD can be utilised on tarseal roads. Another big tick is awarded for the impressive turning circle. Manoeuvrability is key in the all-round vehicle – and whether you’re finding a parking space in Tauranga City or getting out of a tight spot out in the rural Western Bay, the Triton turning circle is a very compact 11.8 metres. However, the real value of the Mitsubishi Triton is as a work and recreational vehicle, which will handle any challenges thrown at it with ease. The big double cab provides plenty of space in the back seats with a myriad of room for six foot plus passengers. Sedan comfort is provided in both front and rear seats with minimal road noise.
The beautifully crafted covered wellside tray, not only sets the Mitsubishi Triton of in style, but provides one of the longest and deepest trays in its class. As the advertising spiel says: “If you can’t fit your load in here, the problem’s with your forklift”. The split boot raises the lid with effortless hydraulic assistance, while the other half drops down with ease. A big step-over tow bar makes for easy loading. Outdoor types are likely to be in raptures, with the huge payload of 960kg at the back and the towing capacity of 3.1 tonne. Whether loading up the tray to capacity for a road trip, going bush for a hunting expedition or towing the boat, the Mitsubishi Triton fits the bill on all counts. A real plus for budget-conscience buyers is the outstanding fuel economy, which rates 20 per cent better than the earlier models. The stated range between 7.2 and 7.6 litres per 100km is relative to bigger sedans with big price tags. There is a Mitsubishi Triton to suit all budgets and choices, starting with the Triton 2WD GLX Single Cab at $34,790 all the way up to the top of the range Triton GLS 4WD Double Cab at $57,490. It goes without saying that all Mitsubishi vehicles comes with the best manufacturer warranty in the country, courtesy of the Diamond Advantage 10 Year Warranty.
“Suffice to say, this is one grunty engine.”
