A car that drives itself
For those of us who are 40-plus, one of the most futuristic cars of the 1980s was in ‘Knight Rider’. The show broadcast from 1982 to 1986, with star David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a high-tech modern crimefighter assisted by KITT, an advanced artificially intelligent, self-aware and nearly indestructible 1982 Pontiac Trans Am. The technology featured was so unbelievably high-tech even as a young boy I never thought I would live to see the day a car could drive itself – that was until Friday morning when I picked up the all-new 2016 Audi A4 Quattro Sport from Farmer Auto Village.
Even as we were getting a tour of the features of this impressive yet unassuminglooking car, the claims being made by Prestige division manager Blair Woolford were simply outrageous. But after a short pre-test drive down Hewletts Rd it became obvious the German luxury automobile manufacturer has made the Hollywood script of yesteryear a reality of today. “In all, there are 90 computerised control modules overseeing every facet of the A4’s myriad of technology offerings,” Blair told us. This car literally drives itself.
The third degree
Before heading off on our official test drive and photo shoot with this week’s Bay Driver –director of Bay Events Graeme Martin – he was given the third degree by Audi sales specialist Shaun Marburg. “Graeme, are you familiar with Active Lane Assist?” “No,” said Graeme. “[But] I’ve heard of it.” s e r u t a “What about Collision Avoide F ed ance Assist?” “No.” “Audi Park Highlight 00 rpm assist?” “Again, I’ve heard of it.” t 1500 to 3 a m n 0 0 /6 W k “Predictive Cruise Control?” “I 0 0 •2 to u a d have heard of cruise control,” ee p -s em •8 camera syst charging e s said Graeme, who like me was re es el eg ir d w 0 6 h •3 ce wit starting to feel a little out of his one interfa h p rt a m S • hones p le b depth. allows the new A4 to drive itself in traffic jams, pre-empt speed limit changes via the navigation system and most impressively it accelerates and brakes to keep the A4 at the desired distance from the vehicle ahead. “This technology is years ahead of me,” said Graeme. “But I am enjoying the additional feeling of safety it offers as I do get distracted easily. This technology should be standard on all cars, especially considering some of the bad drivers you see on the road.” It took Graeme a few kilometres to really start trusting the car but by the time we got to ASB Baypark you could have slapped him in a leather jacket and called him ‘The Hoff ’.
Compared to the predecessor model, fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 21 per cent while power was increased by up to 25 per cent. The TDI 200kW Quattro Sport we drove accelerates from 0km/ hr to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds is faster than the turbo-charged petrol variant – and it continues accelerate at unbelievable pace until it reaches the limited top speed of 250km/h. Our photographer Bruce Barnard, who drove home from ASB Arena, said he reckoned the car went “like a <enter expletive here>”. He also told me when he planted his foot poor Graeme was left scrambling for something to hold on to.
Audi’s virtual cockpit
Inside
The Audi virtual cockpit in the A4 was like something out of science fiction. The instrument cluster is in the form of a high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen and presents information in a comprehensive and versatile manner. The Infotainment mode is dominated by a central window while the rev counter and speedometer are displayed as small round elements. The classic view focuses on the instruments. The Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound offers a fascinating innovation too, a sound that enables listeners to experience spatial height. This is achieved by using four additional loudspeakers, two in the dashboard and two in the A-pillars. The heart of the sound system is a 755-watt 16-channel amplifier which controls the 19 loudspeakers. It’s a sound experience that’s never been available in cars before – the music sounds as if it was played for you live.
Under the hood
The new Audi A4 offers five engine variants with one simple principal common to all: less fuel consumption and more power.
Bigger than before with more headroom for front occupants and improved leg room in the back, it’s a more accommodating vehicle with meaningful improvements in comfort for backseat passengers. The larger 480-litre boot is deeper and more useful than before, particularly now it has a one metre wide opening. It’s also a significantly quieter car than before, which becomes immediately obvious in the first 10 minutes behind the wheel. Combined with the mature interior design and more supportive seats, available with venting and massage functions, the effect is really quite soothing.
The verdict
The A4 is a vehicle that truly belies its ‘evolutionary’ look. It is a big step forward for not only Audi but also the medium prestige segment. Seamless infotainment and safety technologies, ruthlessly efficient engines and a composed-yet-tenacious on-road attitude signal a big win for the four-ringed brand. I dare say we may well be looking at a new class leader. To quote Graeme: “The new Audi A4 is simply outstanding”.

Back to defend crown Tauranga’s Mag and Turbo owner and SunLive Baypark Demolition Derby winner for 2015 Shane Morgan. Photo: Tracy Hardy.
The winner of last year’s SunLive Baypark Demolition Derby is back to defend his title in the smash, bash and crash for cash competition around the terracotta track this Saturday night. When Tauranga’s Shane Morgan and his Mag and Turbo team took the crown last April, with a muddy, battered and broken Honda Accord it was a moment of triumph. His smashed-up car came off the track with wheels facing the wrong way. But a turn of the key and a few revs had the engine roaring back into life. “She’s still alive,” they shouted. And behind the wheel of his front-wheel-drive manual Honda – the owner of Mag and Turbo then beat about 70 other drivers in the 2015 SunLive Baypark Demolition Derby. Now Shane’s busy preparing a new car to defend his title. Why? “It was awesome, we had a great time,” says Shane. “It was heaps of fun.” And? “It’s just because of a bit of banter between me and a few mates; that I have to go back and defend my title.” Last year was the first time Shane – a stock car driver – had driven in a demo derby. As for his tactics on the track, there wasn’t any. “When you’ve got a front-wheel drive and everything crumbles around you, there’s no tactics,” said Shane last year. “It’s just go out there and have some fun. It was awesome.” And the adrenalin buzz is a drawcard too – so he’s back to
win another $2000 for being the last man standing in the 2016 event, which revs into gear this Saturday night from 6.30pm. Asked if he has a plan of action to defend his title, Shane says “not really”. “This year Pick-A-Part has helped me out again so they’ve given me the same style car – with an identical chassis and identical motor – and Repco has come on-board too. “So we’ll just go out there and have a bit of fun and see what happens.” Shane’s Mag and Turbo team started stripping the car last week, and has also stripped a second car for another team member to try demo derby racing. Asked if Shane recommends racing in the demo derby to anyone who hasn’t raced car before, he says the opportunity is a good one. “You get to race a car around the track without many rules – it’s great if you want to let loose and get some excitement.” Up to 70 drivers will take part in this Saturday’s SunLive Baypark Demolition Derby. The event is open to anyone with a current driver’s licence and those who can’t organise a car can hire one. The SunLive Baypark Speedway Demolition Derby is on April 9 at ASB Baypark. Gates open 5pm, racing starts 6.30pm. Tickets are available from www.bayparkspeedway.co.nz, at ASB Baypark and at the gate. To enter, see www.bayparkspeedway.co.nz, visit Flamecrusher at Gate Pa, or ASB Baypark’s merchandise hub.

Road trippers find more to small towns than beauty Jumping in a car to hit the beach or to go to a favourite spot are fairly standard reasons for a Kiwi road trip, but what about finding out about who you are along the way? “More and more people are travelling to the regions in search of their history and that’s something we wanted to encourage,” says AA directions editor Kathryn Webster. “There’s nothing like going to a place of personal connection. Sometimes you can stand where your ancestors once stood, and that’s an experience we wanted to inspire New Zealanders to get for themselves, by travelling to find out more about their family origins. “A lot of people go overseas to track down their history, but there are many places in New Zealand where these stories have been well-preserved. “We found local museums rich with material that provide clues about ancestors who have lived there, or who arrived in New Zealand at that port and, in my experience, those museums have archivists who are really passionate about what they do and are happy to help with enquiries.” Kathryn found some of her preserved story on an Otago to Canterbury road trip, equipped with clues found in her family tree search as impetus to go ‘home’. “At one point, I stood looking up at an English Oak planted in Christchurch’s Riccarton Bush in 1867 by my great-great-grandfather James Webster,” says Kathryn. “He worked there as a forester in the 1860s and lived with his wife Catherine in the worker’s cottage, which is where my great-grandfather was born “It’s still there. I stepped into the cottage, looking for clues, marveling. I kept thinking, this is where one strand of the family tie leads – back to this small house.” For more, visit www.aa.co.nz/directions

California to Tauranga – a Kombi’s tale Julie Gardiner and Steve Watts’ Volkswagen Kombi. Photo: Tracy Hardy.
Bay Driver
Buying or selling – the process Whether it’s your first car, an upgrade, or expensive wheels, there are many questions that need asking before buying a vehicle.
Built in 1964, completely restored and owned by three people. Sounds like an ad for a classic car, but this is a story for a 1964 Volkswagen Kombi original camper.
According to Citizens Advice Bureau, access to who owns a car is limited, but it is easy to find out information about the vehicle itself as well as whether there is any money owed on it – and they recommend you do check if you are thinking of buying a car privately. There are many services available which check the car’s history thoroughly before you buy it. These services can check government and private databases for records of stolen cars, money owing, accident history, odometer history, etc. The cost of the report varies from service to service. The Motor Vehicle Register, administered by the New Zealand Transport Agency, holds information about who owns a particular motor vehicle, as well as information about the vehicle itself. However access to this information is restricted. If the vehicle is owned by an organisation, anyone can access the owner’s name and address. If the vehicle is owned by an individual, then you would have to apply to the NZTA to access it under the Official Information Act. More information about access to the Motor Vehicle Register is on the NZTA website. How do I find out whether a car for sale has money owing on it? A motor vehicle for sale by a motor vehicle dealer must display a Consumer Information Notice. If there is money owning on it to a finance company, the CIN will display this statement: ‘There is a security interest registered over this motor vehicle’. If the vehicle is being sold privately, you can check the Personal Property Securities Register online to find out if a motor vehicle has any security interest associated with it. You’ll need to provide the registration number and VIN (or chassis number), and the service costs $3 by direct debit or credit card for each vehicle you check. See the PPSR website. You can also use the TXTB4UBUY service – text the registration number and VIN (or chassis number) of the car to 3463, and you’ll receive a YES/NO answer, depending on whether the vehicle is being used as a security for a debt, along with an SMS report code to enter online at their website. More information about the TXTB4UBUY service is on the PPSR website.
Julie Gardiner and Steve Watts brought the VW van from California to Tauranga three years ago, and set out to completely restore it. “We got her from the one guy who had her for 49 years. We bought it in California three years ago, brought it to Tauranga and restored it. We have done all the work ourselves,” says Julie. Steve says the inside hadn’t been updated since 1964 and everything was tatty. “We stripped it out to the bare metal. “We then sound-proofed it, and Julie’s dad and Julie did all the cabinetry, then all three of us put the roof in, and I did all the campsite electrics inside.” “We travel around the country in her all the time, we absolutely love it,” says Julie. The Kombi has 89,000 miles on the clock and Julie says they did 3500km last year in the South Island. “No matter where you go, she makes people smile, and they want to take photographs.” Steve says the van comes complete with a “rock ‘n’ roll” bed, “so when you pull it out it is two inches narrower than a full double”. The combi is fully self-compliant with water and waste. She comes equipped with cooker, sink, fridge and Sky TV. There is a cabinet located in the back of the seat where the aerial is packed away. When Julie and Steve want to watch a bit of telly, they pull it out, hook it up and are away laughing. “There is a portaloo with a waste bin and 32 litres of fresh water which allows us to freedom camp for a minimum of two days,” says Steve. “It’s brilliant, we love it.”
