Closing in on champion’s crown Mount Maunganui motocross legend Cody Cooper has tightened his grip on the national MX1 title after a stunning performance at last week’s Rotorua round. Defending champion Cody extended his lead in the four round New Zealand Motocross Championships from three to 19 points, with the series rounding out near Pukekohe this Sunday. After starting the series off the pace in Taranaki last month, where difficulties with the concrete starting pad held him back to fourth overall for the round, he has gone on to dominate the championships claiming five wins in the six races since. Australian rider Kirk Gibbs, Cody’s nearest challenger in the runner-up position, had to settle for one win and two fourth placings at the Rotorua round. Cody’s fellow Honda Shop Racing Team member John Phillips holds third place overall on the table. Cody, said it was ‘an awesome day’ for him,

but was annoyed for a rookie mistake at the start of the first race which forced him to fight hard to claim back lost places to finish third. A consistent performance by Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter, who achieved three fifth placings in Rotorua’s MX1 races, saw him climb to ninth place overall. Te Puke’s Logan Blackburn finished the round in sixth place overall in the MX2 class after he claimed a fifth and a seventh in his first two races. Fellow Western Bay rider Aaron Wiltshier, who made a strong debut in the MX2 class after two seasons competing in the 125cc class, finished 10th at the Rotorua round which propelled him to 20th place overall. Above and beyond It’s love. First sight, sound, smell, internet instant message. It comes in all shapes and sizes, and I’ve found mine in love at first drive. The compact Range Rover has ‘evoqued’ a passion in me, and I want one! If everyone in the Bay sends me a dollar, you can make love happen. Anything spare will, of course, go to charity. Range Rovers throughout history have been large, comfortable workhorses. A kind of softer, more prestige version of the usual Series Land Rover/Defender style vehicles, but still a workhorse, complete with hosedown interiors. My dad had one of the originals, from the late 70s if I recall. I remember it being very smooth and comfortable, and breaking down a fair bit – as did most British cars from the 70s. Then came a new dawn, in the mid-1990s, nearly 25 years after the original was released. The Range Rover became a status symbol with the release of the new Range Rover – or P38A to its friends. The early 2000s saw the birth of bling, with every premiership footballer and his WAG to wealthy oil barons owning one, to the modern day with sharp good looks, a little bit of tasteful bling and undeniable quality. This may sound like a chequered history, from being one of the most unreliable cars in the world, to the modern day choice for reliable, quality SUV motoring, but one thing has always been consistent. No matter what, Land Rover has always made a true SUV. None of this soft, soccer mum kind of thing; Range Rovers can pretty much go anywhere. Their ability off road is second to none for this class of vehicle, and once you’ve finished mud plugging, you just hose it off and turn up to the finest restaurant in town. So what about the baby of the range? The Evoque is a compact SUV, with modest size engines and slightly lower ride height than

its larger siblings. Some are even 2WD only, although they may not be available in NZ. Has Land Rover gone soft? Nope. Even the 2WD is a capable off-roader. Granted it won’t get you as far as the 4x4, but it still outstrips any of its competition in the same footing. Of course, you probably won’t see an Evoque out in the paddocks, so just as well it’s such a good car around town, on the open road, or taking pride of place outside a lovely home in the ’burbs.

Different, unusual ...

The Evoque is a little more understated than the Sport or the full blown Range Rover. It’s different, unusual, and that’s what makes it stand out. Its high ride position, squat roof line and exceptional styling make this like nothing else on the road. Our test model, the Si4 Evoque Dynamic, came with optional 20” wheels to add to the drama; it looks amazing. Out on the road, it sails along effortlessly. The 2.0 Si4 turbo charged petrol engine has zero turbo lag and only the faintest sound effects, just to let you know it’s there. It can even pull 0-100km/h in just 7.6 seconds, and has a blistering top speed of 217 km/h. With that kind of power and speed, coupled with the 4WD system, you’d expect it to chew through the gas too. Nope! 7.8l/100km combined average fuel consumption.

Internally you won’t be disappointed either. Our test version came with the Oxford leather seats, beautifully detailed and just a delight to sit in. The dash and centre console layout is very traditional, with the Land Rover ‘slope’, but simplistic, easy to navigate and undeniably quality. When you fire up the engine, the gear rotator ceremoniously rises up from the centre console. Effortlessly rotate to the gear you want, and you’re away.

There’s no guesswork in driving this car, and I love that. All the technology you could need is here, and you can make use of all of it. The in-dash 5” touch screen opens up a world of options, to change a multitude of settings, or just tune the radio. The configuration options, such as being able to change the ambient lighting in the cabin, to the GPS are simple to use. Climate controlled front seats are available, wade sensing to let you know how deep you can drive through water, down to the usual phone pairing etc, and so many others in between. Out test model was also optioned with a powered tailgate, a must for the vertically challenged.

I want one

I could go on and on about the Evoque. It was a total pleasure to drive, it’s a stunner to look at, and I really do want one, so please give generously to my cause. If you want one too, there’s a raft of options to make it uniquely yours. The range of colours, interior options, and accessories is vast. The brochure is more like a weighty catalogue from the finest retailer, packed with items to refine to your taste and needs. You won’t believe some of the options available. I’ll leave you to discover those yourself; grab one from Duncan and Ebbett on Hewletts road today. Prices in the available range start from $73,000, and all come as 4x4 models. Although the 2WD model is featured in the brochure, it does not appear to be available in NZ at this time. A choice of two diesel and one 2.0ltr turbo-charged petrol engine are available. When you consider that the pricing of this Range Rover is akin to some of the Japanese/Korean et al SUV’s on the market, why wouldn’t you go Range Rover? By Jay Burston

Super series success Everything came together after an uphill battle for Tauranga superbike team M1 Motorsport at Hampton Downs last weekend when Linden Magee claimed two titles. Tauranga team manager Robert Ramshaw said the top results at the third round of the New Zealand Superbike series, including taking the New Zealand Tourist Trophy title and the Geoff Perry Memorial Trophy, made the challenging season to date worthwhile. “This season has been uphill the whole way. We needed this win. Linden is a talented rider – we just needed everything to come together, and it did.” M1 Motorsport team spokeswoman Jos Mason says the highlight of the weekend was the 20 lap TT race which was restarted after two riders – Nick Cole and James Smith – came off their bikes in the first two laps due to light rain on the track. The strong result, which helped them claim second place overall for the round, with 49.5 points just behind Nick Cole’s 52.5, has narrowed the points gap with others in the top five ahead of the final round in Taupo this weekend. Linden is in fifth place overall on 143.5, just behind Sloan Frost (146) and James Smith (149) and a little further back from leading riders Dennis Charlett (187) and runner-up Jaden Hassan (182). “All we need are the top riders to have another bad weekend next weekend at Taupo and with some more persistence and luck, it will all come down to the final Superbike race,” says Jos. Linden was delighted with the results on the BMW S 1000RR, saying he was ‘surprised and stoked’ at claiming the two titles. The final round will be held in Taupo on March 14-15. Ramble of tractors, vintage cars and coffins Move over garden and kitchen rambles – Katikati is staging its highly popular Blokes in Sheds Ramble again on Saturday, March 21. Fourteen local blokes will open their sheds to visitors to display and discuss their vintage engines, interesting machinery, model boats and aircraft, intriguing collections, coffins and fascinating woodwork – all for a good cause. All profits from the third annual ramble are being donated to the Katikati St John 365 campaign, to build a new St John Ambulance station in the town. Thanks to the generosity of the local community, and a $500,000 bequest, the target of $800,000 is close to being met. In fact, the existing ambulance station in Beach Rd will be open during the ramble so visitors can see just why a new station is needed and meet the staff who run it. Among those taking part in the ramble is Eric Green, who has been collecting early farm machinery and memorabilia for 20 years. He also has a 1930 Model A Ford restored to pristine conditions. At Michael Cooper’s property there is massive 1958 D9 Caterpillar plus a collection of bulldozers of varying makes and models in a very tidy and orderly shed. And something completely different will be found at the shed occupied by the Katikati Coffin Club, which has more than 60 members making their “underground furniture” which some members us as coffee tables, bookcases or storage units, while others put away for future use. The Pakeke Lions Men’s Sheds at the former Katikati Museum and the newly formed Western Bay Model Flyers club is will have a range of model aircraft on display and there’s the chance to try out a flight simulator. At The Craft Shed recycling at its best, with old wood turned into exquisite new pieces. In his shed Rene Ruf has a lovely collection of engines he’s restored, including a NZ Greenslade motor from the early 1920s, and a number of Lister engines from England.

Others in the ramble are the Katikati Waihi Radio Control Boating Group with model craft up to 1.4 metres long and Clive Vadson, a retired joiner with a great shed featuring a large quantity of woodworking machines and welding equipment. Eris Boyack isn’t a bloke, but that doesn’t stop her creating miniature houses and furniture, portraying life mostly in colonial New Zealand. Small scale power tools, materials and the work area is also on display. Smithy’s Workshop is the perfect place for a restoration enthusiasts to potter away on projects, and Ray Zander has set up a perfect bloke’s shed in an old packing shed, where he produces more than 100 different items crafted from new and recycled timbers including rimu and some kauri. Tickets to the ramble, from 9am-4pm on Saturday, March 21, cost $10 and from Katikati Information Centre, Main St, Katikati. Ford cars bring in the cash To the uninitiated, the Ford Muscle Car Club may conjure up images of hard-bitten petrol-heads. But the recent All Ford Day showcased their soft side. The event on March 1 raised a whopping $1000 for the Child Cancer Foundation. Ford Muscle Car Club national president Barry Gordon has been a supporter of the foundation for four years after becoming involved at a Mount Beach Bald event. He was impressed by the work CCF business development manager Delwynne Hahunga and her team do in Tauranga. More than 370 cars were on display at the recent event – and a combination of a slice of the gate takings,

a bucket drop, and a ‘bit of a top up’ from the club raised the total amount. According to Delwynne, CCF receives no government funding, nor funding from any other cancer charity. “We’re the ones who provide the direct support for the children and their families so donations really help.” Delwynne says every family has their own journey and their own difficulties to overcome. She says CCF’s job is to work out how they can best help each family. “It might be petrol vouchers so the family can get up to see their child and sibling in Starship [Children’s] Hospital. It could be meal vouchers, or help topping up power bills to provide heating for kids in winter. “There’s a myriad of ways we can help, and it’s individualised, so that’s where we can really make a difference.” Delwynne is grateful to ‘the most amazing people’ from the club which have supported the foundation during the last four years and knows they do it out of ‘the generosity of their hearts’.
