TheeventwasledbyWaihīBeachSurfSchool.

Thirtyresidentsandbach-owners,alongwiththesurfschool helped17surferswithdifferentdisabilities,duringtheJanuary18 event.

ParafedWaikatoisaboutpromotingandprovidingsport andrecreationforpeoplewithphysicaldisabilitiesandvisual impairments.Theadaptivesurfingdayisafavouriteeventonthe calendar.

OneoftheparticipantswasRyleeSayer,16,wholostanarm18 monthsago.Shespentallhertimeinthewater,determinedto standupandpushherselfupwithonearm.

WaihīBeachvolunteerDaniHudson,14,saidRyleehad“no quitinher”.

“Shewassodetermined,anditmademesohappytoseeher progressacrosstheday.Ihadagreattimeanditfeltlikeshedid too.”

ParafedSportdevelopmentofficerCathyWoollersaidthey lovedWaihīBeachfortheirsurfingday.

“It’snotjustduetothematsandbeachwheelchairs,butalsothe peopleandthecommunity.ThesupportwereceivefromWaihī BeachSurfSchoolandLiveWellWaihīBeachisfantasticandthe amountofvolunteersthatshowupfullofenergyisjustpriceless.”

LiveWellWaihīBeachmanagethebeachmatsandwheelchairs andputthecalloutforvolunteers.

Theresponsehasgrowneveryyear,saidLiveWellWaihīBeach communitycoordinatorCindyClare.

“Thiseventissobeneficialforourcommunity.Theinspiration we,asvolunteers,getfrommeetingtheParafedmembersand seeingwhatispossibleagainstallphysicalbarriersisincredible. Anditbringsourvolunteercommunitytogetherwithpositivity.”

Thiseventwasawin-winforbothParafedandWaihīBeach,she said.

Katikati’sParkRdwillsoonbebustling withtweensandteensastheymaketheir waybacktoschool.

KatikatiCollegereturnsonFebruary5(forYear 7andnewstudents)andallstudentsreturnon February7.

PrincipalLouiseBuckleysaidthisyearthey expectarollofmorethan800students.

“Thisisuponpreviousyears;therolllastyear wasataround780.Itispleasingtoseeanincrease inenrolmentsfromOmokoroaasKatikati Collegeisbeingseenasanalternativetothe Taurangaschools.

“Wehaveworkedhardtoensurethatthe college,students,andstaffareseenfavourablyin thewidercommunitythroughtheirwonderful achievements.Weareincrediblyproudofwhat ourstudentsachieve.”

Thenumberofinternationalstudentshasalso grownandtheystarttheyearwith10overseas students.AgroupofstudentsfromArgentinawill bejoiningthemforamonthandtherewillbe fourshort-termgroupsfromJapanandChina. Louiseextendsawarmwelcometoallstudents, staffandfamily.

Inanewtwist,theatrecompany SummerShakespeareTaurangaTrust haschosentheopulent1930seraasa backdroptotheirportrayalofRomeo andJulietwhichplaysoutatTePuna QuarryParkAmphitheatreinFebruary.

Trustfounderandcreativedirector PascalTibbitssaidthesuper-stylish fashionandchangingattitudesofthe 1930sworksperfectlyfortheiconic Shakespeariantragedy.

“It’ssaidthatShakespearewasamong thefirstfeminists.Heoftenpokes funathowwomenofhistimewere almostownedbytheirfathers.Inthe 1930swomenwerebecomingmore empowered,theyweregoingagainstthe type.”

RomeoandJulietisatragedyabout theromancebetweentwoItalianyouths fromfeudingfamilies.Itisoneofthe playwright’smostsombreplays.

TibbetsplayedMercutiointheplay about30yearsagowiththeUniversity ofAuckland’sSummerShakespeare.He lovedthelanguage,thetriplemeanings, thedepthofsocialcommentandthe relevancetomoderntimes.

Pascalalsolovedthechaosoftheplay.

“It’snotawhimsicallovestory,it’sa brawl,it’safight.Thewaythosepoor loverstrytofindtheirwaythroughthat discordisfabulousbuttragic.”

Tibbitsmadesomeofthecharacters women“whichgivessomeofthebawdy jokestakeanewtwist”,hesaid.

AShakespeareanplaywasnotabout thelanguage–it’saboutthestory, Tibbetssaid.Theaudiencewillnotbe stumpedbycomplicateddialogue.

“Thestoryhastoshinethroughandwe havedonethatthroughgooddirecting andgoodacting,”Pascalsays,

WithwifeVikki,theTePunacouple werethewinnersofMyKitchenRules NewZealandin2023.Theyhavebeen bringingShakespearebackintothe theatricalfoldforseveralyears.

Theiraimistointroduceand mentoryoungpeopletotheatreand Shakespeare.

Thereare22inthecast.Julietisplayed byRainDenyerfromMountMaunganui andOliverSpencefromPāpāmoaplays Romeo.

GayleSpence,whoplayedProsperoin lastyear’sTheTempest,directs.
