The newvenue has been an “absolute gamechanger” for the Katikati Community Patrol ,saidEuanNeil Theynowhave a covered and secure area tohouse the patrol car andkeep all their equipment

“Insteadofgoing to the yardandworking in the darkwhen it’s chucking it downwith rain, we come inhere, we prepare the car, do the checks on it, the paperwork andwe don’t have toget soaked When we come backwe’re doing everything in the dry again, andwithdecent lighting ” Their previous home for the patrolvehicle was outdoors at a private residence

Volunteers oversee a large area fromTanners Point toMortonRd, so they’re always looking for more patrollers, said teamleader Ross Sutherland They’re alsopart ofCommunityPatrols of NewZealandPathway toPolice programme which encourages potentialpolice recruits to join Locally, theyhave one onboard Sutherland said theyneedmore funds for running costs such as fuel, insurance, uniforms and maintaininggear The patrolhas been trying to futureproof themselves for the past fewyears and witha secure premises and the vehicle, now theyneed to concentrate onfunding tolaunchmore patrolling during the week They always needmore volunteers The local patrolhas approximately 18 at the moment and they range inages from 19 to90

Before moving into the MiddlebrookDr building, the Katikati CommunityVan Service was basedoutdoors “It is great tobe able to store the vehicles under cover, ” saidLeslie Ruf “It makes chargingEftpos machines and phones muchmore practical, andof course, there’s the security aspect It’s alsogreat tobe able to run training sessions under cover, especially

wheelchair practical training which is difficult if it is wet ”

She said it works well to have the trioof community organisations based inone building They’re lookingfor more volunteer drivers and application forms are available from the Katikati CommunityCentre (075490399) Bookings canbe made at Katikati Community Centre
