“Anaveragefuneralcancost$10,000 andalotofpeoplegointodebt.

“It’sahardenoughtimeasitiswithout spendingyearspayingofffuneraldebt oflovedones,sothisisacommunity initiativetohelp[show]peoplehowto doitthemselves–orhowtouseahybrid ofservicesforsomethings.It’sabout providingthatinformationtopeople.”

Inherprofessionasadoula(onewho supportssomeonewhoisdyingortheir familyandlooksafterthemholistically) itappearedtoDelaneyfuneraldirectors seemtohavethemonopoly.

DeathWithoutDebtgivespeoplesome autonomy,shesaid.

Theworkshops,whichareheld nationwide,arenottoputdownfuneral directorsastheyhavetheirplace,shesaid, andmanyoptforacombinationof theiruse.

“Manypeopledon’tknowthingslike,

thatyoucanbuildyourowncoffin,you cantransportyourlovedonesyourself, youdon’thavetouseahearseandyoucan doyourownpaperwork.”

Theworkshopscoverfuneralplanning, wills,enduringpowerofattorney, advancedcareplans,probate,after-death paperworkandavoidingprofessional servicefees,careandtransportofthe body,coffins,cremationversusburials, alternativetechnologies,thepoliticsof funerals,communityinitiatives andcollectiveactionforfuneralreform andmore.

Thiswillbeherthirdworkshop.

Thecommunitycame togetherinahuge celebrationtoacknowledge 100yearsoftheKatikati A&PShowonSunday.

The community came pandemic and one due to

pandemicandonedueto adverseweatherconditionsin morerecenttimes. Therewereafewfamousfaces amongthethousandsattending includingactressMiriama Smith.

Mauger attended the event and reports on some of the wonderful things she saw been one of the stand-out events on the local calendar for a century and the committee is proud to say they’ve only cancelled a few in its history – including the Covid-19

Therewereahugerangeof informationstallssuchasthe ProstrateCancerFoundation andtheTaurangaDeafSociety, regionalbusinessstalls,local emergencyservices,craftmarkets andnumerousfoodandbeverage stalls.Forthekidstherewasrock climbing,artsandcrafts,balloons, face-painting,apuppetshow, donkeyrides,trainandjeeprides.

Thehomeindustrieshall showcasedthebestingarden produce,baking,flowers,art,

andanumberofcompetitions wereheldforallages.Thehome industrysectionoriginatedasa placeforwomenandchildrento showcasetheskillslearntwithin thehome.

Therewasanimpressivemilitary vehicledisplayaswellasvehicles andnewandoldfarmequipment, withclassiccarsandhotrods gleaminginthehotsun.

Abigpartofthedayisputon bytheequestriancommunitywho traveltoparticipateinthehorse flatandshowhunterjumping events.Thisyearsidesaddlewasa specialityclass.

Ariela, 13, came idupwiththe Peaofdressing ipsqueakthe hsheepasthe unter, and herselftheprey. Shewon second place ribbons inleading and calling andbest trick.
