Thegardenenthusiastisaregular ontheKatikatiGardenRamblescene –she’sopenedherHotSpringsRd propertytothepublicformorethana decade–butshe’salsobigonpreserving relicsforWesternBayMuseum.

Sheistheirlongestservingvolunteer at25years.Shewasencouragedtojoin thevolunteercrewoftheoldKatikati HeritageMuseum–whichopenedin 2000andclosedin2014–byNancy andKenMerriman.

Herloveofantiquesstartedasachild watchinghermotherbringhomethings boughtfromauctions,doingthemup andsellingthemon.

Sisleyhasamassedherowncollection offascinatingartefactsanditemsof interestaftertravellingextensivelyfor manyyears.Thetreasuresnowadornher homeincludinga1900sOttomanwood cradlefromInstanbul,Turkey,whereshe livedfortwoyears.Thecradlewasonea fewitemsshehasloanedtoWesternBay Museumforexhibitions.

OriginallyfromEngland,sheworked attheNationalTrustpropertyin Nottinghamshireontheupkeepofa historichousecalledMrStraw’sHouse. Thiswasthehomeofagrocer’sfamily fromthe1920s.

Theschoolrunsitsownbreakfastclubandlunchpack schemeastheyarenoteligiblefortheGovernment’s HealthySchoolLunchesprogramme.

Inpreviousyears,theschemeshavebeenfundedbyApata GroupLtd,whichtheschoolisgratefulforbutanew sponsorisurgentlysoughtthisyeartocontinuethiswork.

“Unfortunately,wenowfindourselvesinneedofanew sponsortocontinuethisvitalprogramme,”saidprincipal AndreaNicholson.“Withoutthiscrucialsupport,weface uncertaintyinbeingabletoprovidethisservicetoour students.”

About16loavesofbreadareusedeachdayatthe breakfastclub.Volunteersserveupaselectionoftoastwith avocado,honey,home-madejam,Vegemiteandpeanut butter.“Thesemealshelpensurethatourstudentsstart theirdaywiththeenergyandfocustheyneedtosucceed intheclassroom,”saidNicholson.

Onofferforthelunchpacksisasandwich,fruit,yoghurt, packetofraisinsandmueslibar.

Nicholsonsaidanyhungrychildcouldcomealongto thebreakfastclub,whichoperatesthreedaysaweek.They makeabout20lunchesdaily.

AteamofvolunteersgivetheirtimeeveryMonday, WednesdayandFridaymorningstomakebreakfastforthe children.

WaipunaHospiceiscallingonthe communitytostepupandtakeona meaningfulchallengethisMarch.

The2025HospiceHeroChallengeis yourchancetotestyourlimits,makea difference,andbecomeaheroforhospice, supportingtheterminallyillandbereaved inourcommunity.

Everyday,atleastonepersonisreferred toWaipunaHospice,seekingmedical oreducationalsupportaroundpalliative andend-of-lifecare.Mostofusknow someonewhohaswalkedthroughtheir doors,makingthisacauseclosetohome formanyinourcommunity.TheHospice HeroChallengeisachancetogiveback whilechallengingyourselfphysicallyand flexingyourfundraisingmuscles.

“WaipunaHospicereliesonthesupport ofourcommunitytofund59%ofour operatingcosts,”saidJamie-LeighBurgessSmith,WaipunaHospicefundraising manager.“BysigningupfortheHospice HeroChallenge,you’renotonlyhelping usdeliverfreeend-of-lifecareandsupport tothosewhoneeditmost,butyou’realso becomingapartofsomethingbigger – a movementofpeoplecomingtogetherto makearealdifference.

“Thisyear,Ihavepersonallyjoinedthe HospiceHeroChallenge,takingpart withmycolleaguesas‘TeamWaipuna Hospice’.Receivingsponsorshipfrom friendsandfamilywillnotonlymotivate metocompletemychallengebutalso helpmeraiseasmuchaspossibleto supportpeopleinourcommunityduring theirmostdifficulttimes”.

Thefundraisingpartdoesn’thaveto beboringeither – therearenumerous waysyoucangetcreative.Whynothost abakesale,runacarwash,mowyour neighbours’lawnsandaskyourfriends, family,orworkplacetosponsoryou.

FundsraisedthroughtheHospice

Peoplearebeingencouragedtotesttheirlimits.

HeroChallengewillgodirectlytowards WaipunaHospice’sessentialservices, includingnursevisits,loanmedical equipment,inpatientcare,familysupport, andmore,ensuringtheseservicesremain freeforpatientsandwhānauwhenthey needitmost.

HowardStrahan,whosewifereceived carefromWaipunaHospice,understands howimportanthospicecareisinour community.

Thevolunteers,thenurses,thestaff – all ofthemwereincredible.Youdon’tknow whatit’slikeuntilyouexperienceit,and I’msogratefulforeverythingtheydidfor meandmywife.Deathisafactoflife.

Devlinsaidsignificantgapsremainin research,diagnosisandcareofwomen withheartdisease.“Itisanareawe areinvestinginonanationaland internationalscale,andwehopethis researchwillmakeamajorimpacton women’shearthealth.”

In2021,Hansenherselfwasdiagnosed withatrialfibrillation–aheartrhythm disorder,andsheisnowengagedin sharingherstoryintheBigHeartAppeal becausesheknowsitcouldonedayhelp savelives.

Katikati’snew-lookWaitangiDay celebrationsbroughttogether localsandvisitorsforadayfilled withculturalactivities,vibrant entertainmentandplentyoffood.

TeRaoWaitangiattractedfamilies fromacrosstheregionkeentocelebrate NewZealand’snationaldayatHaiku Park.

Thefamilyfundaywasanewevent organisedbyWesternBayMuseum,a changefromtheirpreviousdawnservice heldthelasttwoyears.

Thedawnceremonieshadincluded welcomes,speeches,peoplesharingwhat theTreatymeanttothemfollowedbya cookedbreakfast.Buttheearlystartwas

restrictiveforsomepeople,saidmuseum managerPaulaGaelic.

Thisyeartheyorganisedaneventin themiddleofthedaysofamiliescould attend.Musicandkaiisagreatwayto bringculturestogether,Gaelicsaid,and itwas“trulymagic”.
