Aftermeetingcommunitypatrolteam leaderRossSutherland,Tomofferedto giveafewnightseverymonthasthe“eyes andears”ofthepolice.“Weneedtobe lookingafterourcommunity,”Tomsaid.

He’sconcernedwiththeamountof burglaryinKatikati,especiallyintherural areas.“Thepatroliseffectivealright,just thefactthatthepatrolcaristhere.You’ll bearoundatnightandseeacarthat doesn’tlooklikeitshouldbethere...you pullupbesideitandninetimesoutof10, itdrivesaway.”

Fixingthings

Tomlivesonalifestylepropertyonthe outskirtsoftown.Hespendshisdays toilingawayfixingvintagecars,caravans andtractorswithpalGideondeLautour. TheTaurangaVintageMachineryClub membersarenowrebuildingacaravan. Hisfleetincludesa1914Dodge,which heboughtanddroveacrosstheUSand shippedbacktoNZ.Healsorebuiltan oldJaguar.There’salsoa1917Dodge Roadsteranda1937Plymouth.Two tractorsarewaitinginthewingsfora rebuild.AllfinishedcarshaveaWOF.

KatikatiCommunityPatrollooksafter theareafromTannersPointtoMorton Rdviavariousnightanddaypatrolsfor three-hourshifts.

Theideaistopreventcrimeand minimiseharmthroughthepresenceof trainedpatrollers.Theydonotleavethe patrolcar,whichhastechnologytokeep intouchwithpolice.

Preschoolersareinvitedtoattend anewregularplaytimeactivityin Katikati,whichhasfinallycome tolifeinsidethecommunity’stoy libraryfacility.

KatikatiToyLibraryCommitteethis monthlaunchedMinikidi–anew,fun play-basedactivitycateredespeciallyto babiesandpreschoolersandtheirfamilies.

CommitteespokeswomanSandyGoode saysMinikidiwillberunatthetoylibrary premises–butwillbeseparatefromthe libraryhours.“Twoofourcommittee members,JaclynPhillottandMelissa Laughton,havegenerouslydonatedtheir timetorunthesessions,withonesession programmedeachweekinschoolterms.”

“We’vealwayshadtoylibrarymembers commentingthatthereneedstobemore preschooleractivitiesinourcommunity whichrunonaregularbasis–forlearnby-playdevelopmentandforsocial interactionforboththechildrenand parents,”Goodesaid.

“Ourcommitteeworkedformorethan twoyearstogetMinikidiupandrunning –finallywe’velauncheditandit’svery exciting!Weinviteallpreschoolerfamilies tocomealongtosessions.”

Sessionswillberuninsidethetoylibrary –behindtheChristianCentreonHenry Rd–onthefirstandthirdThursdaysof themonthfrom1pm-2.30pm;andon thesecondandfourthMondaysfrom 9am-11.30am.Phillott,whowillrunthe Thursdaysessions,saidthetimescater

tofamiliesandcaregiversdroppingolder kidsoffatschoolonMondays,whocan thencomealong;andbeforeThursday schoolpick-up.

“Anyoneunderschoolageiswelcometo comealong–thisincludesbabiesbelow oneyearold,whichwewillcaterforwith anage-specificareaofplay.Wealsohave brandnewchairsandsofastobreastfeed on.”Toiletandnappy-changingfacilities areavailabletoo.

Free-flowplay

WhenpeoplearriveatMinikidi, obstacle-basedactivitieswillbesetup. “There’snostrictstarttime,youcanjust rollinasitsuitsyourfamilyandsleep times–theonlythingyouneedtodoon entryissignin,”saidPhillott.

“Wealsomusthaveparentsand caregiversstayattheactivitywiththeir childorchildrenandactivelysupervise theirplay.It’sfree-flowplay,there’sno setstructurebutchildrendoneedtouse theequipmentsafelyandpractisefair playsoeveryonehasagoodtime.”

Newequipment

Whilesometoysfromlibrarymaybe incorporatedintoMinikidiplay,most itemsusedwillbethe$14,000worth ofnewequipmentthecommitteehas fundraisedandpurchasedforMinikidi.

Thisincludesclimbingbars,padded tracks,tunnels,spinningtopschildren cansitin,ride-ontrolleys,softballsand hoops,quoits,andmuchmore.“Thisis brandnewequipmentcateredespecially topreschoolerplay–thewholepointisto getyourkidsmoving!Becauseamoving

childisalearningchild.”Laughtonsaid thebeautyofMinikidiisitslocatedin Katikatitownship,sofamiliesdon’thave totraveltoTaurangaforsuchanactivity, andthatitisverychilledout.“Youcan comeandgowithyourchildren–you don’thavetostaythewholesession.

KatikatiVolunteerFireBrigadeishavingafamily opendayonSaturday,March29,forthepublicto checkoutwhotheyareandwhattheydo.

It’salsoarecruitmentday–andthebrigadeis seekingimportant,potentialsupportstafftohelp withallaspectsoftheserviceaswellasboots-onthe-groundfirefighters.

“Therearealotofpeopleouttherewhocould makegreatfirefightersbuthaven’thadthechanceto checkoutwhat’sinvolved,”saidKatikatibrigade’s deputychiefCraigGray.“It’ssucharewarding job–itteachesyoualotoflifeskills,it’sagood confidence-builderandyougainanewskillsetthat

willserveyoufortherestofyourlife.”

Thebrigadeisalsolookingformembersofall kindsincludingfullyoperational,operationaland brigadesupport.Manyvolunteers,likeGray,have done“alotofyears”andtheyarealwayslookingfor morevolunteers.

“It’salwayshardergettingvolunteersthesedays aspeoplehavebusylives...wealwaysneedmore peoplecomingthrough.”

Thedayincludesamixofeducation, demonstrations,meet-the-firefightersandfunfor families.

A“jawsoflife”demonstrationwilltakeplace. Beinginanaccidentwillputpeopleinaheightened state,Graysaid,soit’sgoodtoshowchildrenthings likethis.

“It’salsogoodforchildrentocomethoughand

checkoutthefirefightersintheiruniformssothey’re notscaredofthem.Wecanlookalotbiggerwithall ourgearon.”

Firefighterswillbeavailabletodiscusstheir experiences.Therewillbestationtoursandvirtual realityheadsetsshowinghowquicklyfirecanspread. Thewaterdemonstrationwillbefunforkids,fire truckswillbeondisplayandafreebarbecueison offer.

TeAraMātauranga–ThePathway toKnowledge.Thisisthename giftedbyTeWhānauaTauwhao hapūtoWaihīBeach’snew libraryandcommunityhub,to acknowledgeitsimportanceasa placeoflearning,connectionand sharedknowledge.

“Itwasarealprivilegeforustobe abletogiftthisnametothelibrary. TeAraMātaurangareallyencapsulates whatalibraryrepresentsforus–it’s thepathwaytoknowledge,”saidReon TuanauofŌtāwhiwhiMarae.

“Inthelastthreeyearswe’vereally workedhardtogetherasacommunity tobringuscloserinkotahitanga [unity],withwhanangatanga [relationships],manaakitanga[caring foreachother],andofcoursewith heapsofaroha(love).

“Thislibraryhasbeenalabouroflove forourcommunity.It’sbeenaproject thathasbroughtourcommunity together,whereallpartsofthe communityhavecontributedandtaken partintheoutcome.”

Thefullname–TeAraMātaurangaWaihīBeachLibraryandCommunity Hub–hadbeenapprovedbyWestern BayofPlentyDistrictCouncilandgave acommunityidentitytothebuilding, whichisscheduledtoopeninJuly.

“Ourprocessofhowwecomeup withthesenamings,wetalkwithour kaumātua,wetalkwithourhapū,we spreadthewordaroundourMāori community,”saidTuanau.

“Andafterwehaveallthiskōrero,we makeadecision,and‘kuatokakōrero’ astheysay:‘it’sputinstone’.”

Designelements

TeWhānauaTauwhaohadalso gifteddesignelementsthatconnect thebuildingtoOtawhiwhiMaraeand thecoastalnatureofWaihīBeach, includingakōwhaiwhaidepictingthe mangōpare(hammerheadshark).

“Whenyoucaptureahammerhead shark,ifyouputitbackinwater24 hourslater,it’llswimawayandcarryon living.So,ittalksaboutperseverance, resilienceandnevergivingup,”Tuanau said.“Wewantedthislibrarytoreally encapsulatetheimportanceofthe environment,andtheimportance ofwhowearehereasWaihīBeach people.Wethinkthat’squitefitting, beingpeopleofthebeach,peopleof themoana[ocean].”

Tangaroa

Alargeweavingabouttheimportance ofTangaroa(Māorigodofthesea)is alsointheprocessofbeingcreated forthereceptiondesk.“Thereareso manymessagesthatarebeingwoven throughoutthisartpiece.

“That’sbeenanotherawesome outcomeofthisproject,theweaving ofthepeople,theweavingofour communitytogether.Allthestrands comingtogether,inanicetight-knit community.”

WesternBayofPlentyDistrict Councildeputychiefexecutive andgeneralmanagerstrategyand community,RachaelDavie,said thenameandartworkgiftedbyTe WhānauaTauwhaotellalocalstory thatrepresentssharedvaluesandis welcomingtoall.

AsightingoffishinKatikati’s UretaraRiverornativebirdswhen walkingtheHaikuPathwayisa high-fivemomentforthevolunteers workingtoremoveinvasiveweeds andpredators.

“Wegetsuperexcitedwhen,fromtime totime,weseeakākāhere,orakererūor ruruandjustafewweeksago,wewere standingonthebridgeandsawflounder,” saidSharonStrong,thecoordinatorof RenaturingKatikati,whichistheurban armofProjectParore.“Thisisexactlythe reasonwedothiswork.”

Thegroupisintoitsseventhyearof restoringthepartoftheriverfromthe statehighwaybridgetotheswingbridge.

“Thechangehasbeenincredible,”said Strong.“Wehavephotosthatshow erosionandpestplantslikeTaiwanese CherryandTreePrivet,thatwere takingovertheriverandnowit’sbeen completelytransformedthroughvolunteer andcommunityinput.”

“I’vebeendoingthisforaboutthreeand-a-halfyears,andwe’veseenwhitebait inthewaterandpheasantsnesting,”said volunteerTonySalisbury.“Ihavean environmentalbackground,sowhenI retiredIwantedtodomyparttoimprove thebiodiversityforfuturegenerationsin whatisourcommunitybackyard.”

JohnStrongmanmovedtotownseven yearsago,andjumpedonboardasoneof theoriginalvolunteersontheproject.

“I’vealwaysbeeninterestedinnative floraandfaunaandIliveontheriver,”he said.“Idonoticeanincreaseinspecies likefernbirdsandfamiliesofbandedrail.”

Predator-freeurbanarea

“Essentially,we’retryingtocreatea predator-freeurbanareaforwildlifeto thrive,”saidStrong.“About18volunteers lookaftertrapsandbaitstations,on WesternBayofPentyDistrictCouncil parksandreserves,andmany,including studentsfromourlocalschools,have helpedplanthundredsofnativeplants andremoveinvasiveweedsfromthe riverbank.“About18volunteerslookafter traps,whileabout50havehelpedplant hundredsoftreesandremovenoxious
