Perfect on Tenth Cosmetic & Veins Clinic great base for friendly excellence

Almost exactly two years ago Dr Anuya Deshpande arrived in the Bay of Plenty from Gisborne, where she had been a GP and cosmetic doctor for 10 years. While many Aucklanders arrive here from the opposite direction looking to slow down, Dr Anuya came to offer more people her skills in cosmetic medicine, varicose vein treatments, and general medical care that she acquired over 20 years as a doctor. Bay of Plenty is Goldilocks-like in its “not too busy, not too slow - just right” nature, she says. “We love the beaches, weather and beauty of the place, and the people have been lovely here, as they are in Gisborne. My original plan was just to run clinics in various places but I got busy fairly quickly and bought a fair bit of new equipment. It became impractical not to have a base,” she says, grinning as she looks around the reception at Cosmetic & Veins Clinic’s elegant chandeliers, restored rimu floors, silver and grey wallpaper. When she saw the former Family Planning Clinic was available on Tauranga’s Tenth Avenue, opposite Promed House, she recognised it could be the perfect hub for her services and specialised equipment in the Bay of Plenty.

In typical “if you want something done, get a busy person to do it” fashion, she designed and organised its renovation and opened as the Cosmetic & Veins Clinic in October this year. Cosmetic & Vein Clinic’s motto: “friendly excellence in cosmetic medicine and varicose vein treatments” embodies Dr Anuya’s appeal. It is a mix of casual warmth that puts people at ease, alongside an obsessive competence in her various fields, to safely get her patients the results they want. Some of her patients have been with her for more than a decade. Over the past decade, Anuya has attained post-graduate qualifications in cosmetic medicine, dermatology, phlebology (varicose vein treatments), ultrasound, skin cancer medicine and skin cancer surgery. She attends at least four conferences each year to keep up with advances in her various fields and has an extensive network of medical specialists around the world to consult with. As well as her study and running her clinic in the past decade, she and husband Martin had three children, now aged, three, four and eight. Last week Dr Anuya was accepted to study towards fellowship with the Australasian College of Phlebology, which means she will be able to teach other doctors the discipline as part of the Australian College of Phlebology where she completed her own training. As well as opening the Cosmetic & Veins Clinic, in October this year, she travelled to Korea to train in non-surgical facelifting techniques. “That experience was incredible, and really bridged the gap between cosmetic medicine and cosmetic surgery.” Suzie Partridge from Bristol in the UK is Cosmetic & Veins Clinic’s friendly co-ordinator, and usually people’s first port of call. Sonja Saunders is the Senior Beauty Therapist and her

role is to complete Dr Anuya’s cosmetic medical treatment plans with peels, HIFU, Dermapen™ and Plasmapen™ treatments. Kelli Locket is the clinic’s social media coordinator, steadily building their Instagram followers, sharing information and keeping in touch with patients and prospective patients around the Bay and beyond. So after the busy 2019, what does Dr Anuya want for Christmas and 2020? “We’d love to hear from anyone with varicose veins they want treated, or people who have some of the symptoms of underlying varicose veins - heavy, restless or aching legs or spider veins. If you or someone you know has a venous ulcer that’s not healing, I would like to help, because life’s happier without them.” In terms of cosmetic medicine, Dr Anuya says she

would love to meet people who want to go on a journey to look and feel their best, with great, healthy-looking skin. Initial consultations allow people to discuss any issues that concern them, and gain a more detailed understanding of what’s possible, says Anuya. “There’s no pressure for people to go on the journey, but it’s always interesting for them to know what they could see if they did. It can be something simple, like fixing a gummy smile, or taking off a raised mole a bloke has shaved around for 40 years that’s starting to scare the grandkids. It can also be procedures that are as complex as cosmetic medicine gets before actual cosmetic surgery - we have a lot in our toolbox, and some of it wasn’t available here before we opened.”

Warm salad of peppered venison salami, halloumi and strawberries with pineapple and mango dressing Ingredients (serves four) 1 chip strawberries, halved and stalks removed 12-15 slices pepperoni salami 150 grams of halloumi cheese, sliced A few small leaves of chopped mint 1 tin mango cheeks ½ pineapple, peeled and chopped 2T balsamic vinegar 3T olive oil Iceberg lettuce, broken into pieces Mesclun mix leaves Method Blend together the drained tin of mango cheeks and the half pineapple. Keep some as is. Add the balsamic vinegar and olive oil to make a dressing. In a non-stick pan fry the slices of salami with a dash of olive oil. Remove when nice and crispy and cut into strips. Now fry the halloumi in the same pan until browned and stretchy. Sprinkle with chopped mint. Assemble the salad on top of dabs of bright yellow mango pineapple purée. Mingle with cut strawberries and dabs of balsamic dressing, layered lettuce leaves and strips of salami and halloumi. The peppercorns and the smokiness of the crisp salami bring out the flavour of the fresh strawberries, and the halloumi with the pineapple mango dressing adds a summery tropical feel.

Baz Mantis A musician helping musicians I first met Baz Mantis when Marilyn CollinsSmith floated happily past me last October, Baz beside her, both dressed up ‘fab’. I snapped a blurry phone photo, capturing the moment.

Baz and Brandon Croton

Later I realised they are also two of the people behind Xanthia, the 2019 Tarnished Frocks & Divas show. Marilyn, or Maz as many of us know her by, is a sparkling creative talent and it’s quite marvellous to see she’s found Baz. He’s at the helm of Musicworks Tauranga which seems a perfect role, given he’s also a musician, recording artist, audio engineer, music video director and producer. They met while working as volunteers at an event at The Incubator. “Marilyn turned up on the crew one evening,” says Baz. “I didn’t have a chance to speak to her - she was busy doing her job and I was doing mine. “At the end of a second gig in April 2018, I mentioned that, ‘I wish there was an after-party somewhere’, and she said ‘Oh, I know where there’s one’.” They ended up talking for hours and quickly Baz realised he’d met his soul mate. “She’s just awesome. The most incredible woman on every level. It’s been fantastic. Just the other day we had our 18th month anniversary.” Within a couple of months of meeting, they were both working on Tarnished Frocks & Divas, Marilyn as the director and principal writer, and Baz as

musical director, sound engineer and contributing writer. “It’s all consuming. We’d wake up at four in the morning so many times and be talking about the show and where it could go. “Sundays we’d meet at Tauranga Boys’ Gymnasium. I’d set up my PA system, Marilyn would be doing an amazing job, directing and choreographing the walks. “It was eye-opening and gave me a completely new appreciation of what it takes to bring a production of that size and scale to an environment as challenging as an arena.” Although Marilyn has a long history in theatre, Baz hadn’t been involved before. A local Tauranga resident for about 14 years, Baz was born in Auckland, moved to Christchurch in his 20s, and arrived in the Bay just before the first Canterbury earthquake. “I was expecting to be landing in the central hub of it all here, in terms of the music scene, having been in it while in Auckland and Christchurch, but found Tauranga still had a way to go to develop.” Since arriving he has made music videos, photographed bands and gigs, and recorded and released albums, such as ‘The D Day Saints’ in 2012. “That got me networking with a lot of local musicians, and I became a fan of bands you don’t really hear about through mainstream media.” He formed a Black Sabbath tribute band which opened for Hamilton band Knightshade in Totara Street in 2015, and has seen the Tauranga music scene develop over the last 14 years. “It’s still got a way to go, but just being part of it, helping in some way is a worthwhile occupation.”

some music videos, never played live unfortunately. “Then I was asked to audition as a guitarist for Electric Universe, made up of Shane Davies, Patrick Hawkins, Jeff Nilson and Michael Furness - all well-known identities in the local music scene. I was blown away when they invited me to audition.” Marilyn is also a backing singer in the band which has produced an album and five music videos, three of which Baz has directed. “We’re busy recording our second album at the moment, and aiming for some great live shows in 2020.” He and Marilyn plan to record their own album under the name of The Grand Bazaar. “It’s going to be a bit avant garde, not so commercial.” He loves the process of learning to play a musical instrument. “As long as you can move your arms and hands, you’ll have an interest and a creative involvement which will stay with you until day you die.90mm That’s one 1/4the page x 265mm thing that people can’t take away from you. At Musicworks Tauranga which is in the same location as the predecessor business Bay City Music, the slogan is ‘musicians helping musicians’, which Baz says is the whole ethos behind the company. Prior to the retail manager role starting in July, Baz was retail manager at Tauranga’s St Vincent de Paul, and has previously been manager of the Christchurch City Mission, helping people. “The Musicworks role is like the dream job. I’ve done both retail management and music, but never brought the two together.” Prior to his Vinnie’s role Baz had worked as a court security officer, hospital orderly and security guard. Discovering the band Kiss as a fiveyear-old was Baz’s inspiration to follow the path into a world of rock and roll. All the makeup, costumes and pyrotechnics proved unforgettable. His first album was Pieces of Daylight – “It was worlds away Sun fromMedia rock, it’s like a new-age relaxation/meditation album Life + Style performed on electric guitar.” His next band Legion of Dissent, blended fast paced vocal delivery with funk and metal. After that came Ten Ton Terror. “It was a hard rock band. We released

Fun for everyone It’s the time of year where the stress starts to mount, people forget to relax and things can get a bit overwhelming. But it’s still important to have a little fun! BayStation, located at Trustpower Baypark, offers all the fun you could want for you, your family and friends, or your workplace. There are four great activities on offer at BayStation – Blokarts, drift trikes, laser tag and paintball – so there’s bound to be something for everyone. For many people, there’s nothing better than the wind in your hair, the speed and that rush flowing through your veins. But if you’re not too keen on getting your sea legs or you’re more of a land lover, BayStation has the perfect solution. It’s just like sailing on land – BayStation’s Blokart track is a fantastic way to get an adrenaline rush while still staying safe and dry.

Next to ASB Bank Spring St Tauranga

Come and see us for great gifts and a not to be missed SALE on all our coffee machines!

The Blokarts are a three-wheeled go kart with a big sail and, despite being referred to as ‘land yachts’ no previous sailing experience is required. Participants are strapped into the Blokarts and guided through how to really get the best experience. Learning to catch the wind and use it takes a few goes around the track but it comes quickly and you’ll soon find yourself wanting more. When you get the hang of things and if you really want to challenge yourself, you can try to get up on two wheels without tipping the kart over. And there’s no need to fear – if your Blokart catches the wind a bit too much and topples over, the chances of getting injured are highly unlikely. BayStation’s specially designed drift trike course is guaranteed to make even the staunchest participants crack a smile – especially if you share the track with family or friends. Drift trikes are a three-wheel trike, powered by an electric front wheel with custom built drifting rear wheels. Another invention from right here in the Bay of Plenty! The course is filled with twists and turns to really get the best drifting experience. It takes a lap or two to get the feel of the trikes but once you’ve nailed it, you’ll never want to come off! The drift trikes are unique and different as --they are front-wheel drive which allows you to have a lot more control over the trikes, while the custom drift wheels on BayStation’s polished concrete track mean you will be sideways as often as possible.

˜ December, °˛˝˙

at BayStation The drift trike track is perfect for those wanting to get the hang of drifting as well as the more experienced that want to race their friends. And because the track is indoors, there’s no need to worry about the weather – you can drift rain or shine! BayStation also has a fantastic outdoor paintball and laser tag arena. With old Jeeps and plenty of house structures and obstacles to hind behind, this arena is the perfect place to put yourself and your team mates to the test. Most people are used to laser tag being hosted in the dark and while wearing cumbersome vests to measure how many shots you sustain. At BayStation, they’ve simplified things. The laser guns work in daylight and have a great shooting range on them. There’s no need for a vest or jacket either as the gun measures how many times you’ve been hit. If you’re looking for something with a little more impact and something a bit more highadrenaline, try the paintball. Being sprayed in coloured paint really adds

a dimension to the sport and when there’s the possibility of light pain people are more inclined to think before they shoot! Either way, the BayStation outdoor paintball and laser tag arena is big enough for two teams to go head-tohead and crown a champion. The activities at BayStation are an ideal way to bring people together – whether it’s for a birthday party, a family outing, a school holidays activity or a corporate event. With light competitive elements along with loads of fun, every group could benefit from taking part in these great activities. There are package deals available and nearly everyone can participate in the activities available at BayStation. Packages can be tailored to suit personalised specifications and all safety equipment and professional tuition is provided to ensure a safe, fun experience. Catering is also available on request and there is a licensed bar on-site, meaning BayStation offers everything you could need for your next event in one place. So what are you waiting for? What can I do? Getting creative with saving penguins I’ve decided to become a backyard trapper. I always loved watching Daniel Boone, America’s great frontiersman and explorer when I was growing up, and somehow the word ‘trapping’ fits with a lost childhood ideal. Trapping a cute hedgehog with a dab of peanut butter and letting it go again or chasing butterflies with a net – it was all very gentle. When I was about seven, I tried to turn the supplejack growing around the cabbage trees on our Waiuku farm into bows and arrows. I never shot anything alive, nor did it occur to me that people did that, I was mostly aiming at tree trunks. Recently I was shocked to hear that the little blue penguins at the Mount appeared to be under attack by predators. Melissa McLuskie, the chair of the Western Bay Wildlife Trust told me how she’d gone to check on Maia, one of the penguins named for her bravery, only to find her sitting on an empty nest made from shards of glass and fishing line. A week earlier while doing penguin monitoring, Melissa had noted a little newly-hatched chick in the nest. Now she was finding chicks and eggs had disappeared from many of the other penguin burrows as well. “What’s going on?” I asked. Probably taken by a predator, Melissa thinks. The trust has a long-term Department of

Conservation permit to monitor the little blue penguins but the cost of undertaking research is high, and as we talk, I realise that the wildlife trust needs help with getting monitoring equipment in place so they can find out exactly what is happening. They’ve set up a fundraising page on Givealittle, so that people can donate, but I start to feel the urge to do something myself. “There’s a lot of cost involved for us to do the work that we’re doing and much of that cost is equipment and manpower. We do our best with the resources we have and are so grateful for our dedicated volunteers and supporters,” says Melissa. “Backyard trapping is a relatively simple task, which can make a huge difference.” I realise backyard trapping is something I can do. Emma Wood from Predator Free Bay of Plenty sent me some photos of the traps, which they’re giving away. “Alf from the Tauranga Men’s Shed was busy adding more traps to the pile while I was there,” says Emma, who is planning, along with Melissa, the launch of Predator Free Mount Maunganui on Sunday December 8 at Mount Drury. I discover that there are groups of backyard trappers all over Tauranga, but hardly any at the Mount, which seems odd, as that is where much of the local penguin and petrel colonies are nesting. The Cosy Corner has a trap, and some great folk down near Bayfair, so talking with Leigh Pettigrew from the Mount Lions, we decide we need to do something. Maybe set up groups, call for help from the community. Help give away traps. Something.

“Backyard trapping is a relatively simple task, which can make a huge di˜ erence”

“The wildlife trust isn’t getting much in the way of funds coming in from Givealittle,” I say to anyone listening, starting to find myself bothered about the decimated population of birds. “Is there some other way we can help raise funds?” I went off home mulling on it, and after about 12 nights of sleep had a minibrainwave. I went off to see my daughter Che Crawford and her husband Ford Saunders, both exceptional artists, and after waving my hands around a bit, sketching on paper and finding some photos to point at, they said ‘yes we can do that’. The result was they turned some unwanted wooden crating into arty garden doors for me. I take those off to Melissa to look at, and that’s when I discover that Melissa’s mum Karen McLuskie is busy coming up with ideas herself to help raise some funds for the trust. Bookmarks, coasters, pen holders, pencil cases, tote bags – many utilising Kiwiana NZ fabrics, which are highly appealing. Karen has endless ideas, using her own original patterns. And she is brilliantly recycling cans, cardboard, old CDs and paper. “I’m in my 30th year working at Countdown, and I like to come home and make crafts,” says Karen. “You can make things out of whatever you’ve got lying around the house. It’s amazing what you can do with recycled items.” “I don’t know if anyone will want to buy

our penguin doors,” I say, wondering if I should turn them into weta houses. “I don’t know how popular my fabric journal covers will be,” says Karen. “Melissa can only try and see what goes well, and what’s popular. “All I’m doing is making them and hoping they make lots of money.” Backyard trapping means that pests that can cause harm to little blue penguins will be caught before they reach the bird’s nesting areas on Mauao, Moturiki and Motuotau Island. The public can come get a free rat trap from Melissa on Sunday December 8 from 12pm – 2pm at Mount Drury, participate in a kidfriendly penguin workshop, and maybe help us raise some funds for the wildlife trust.
