Hello sunshine! Ann was determined to go bold during the remodel of her deco-styled home, opting for bright colours tempered by more subdued hues. Here’s a challenge: Stop smiling as you walk up to Ann and Matt’s home. The exterior is painted in elegant Resene Double Malta, teamed with a front door in Resene Rock Spray, a fiery orange ensuring a bright and cheery entrance to this deco-style home. “I wanted people to smile and go, ‘Oh!’,” says Ann, sitting in a favourite spot in her Resene Streetwise living room. “I wanted to give visitors a clue they are about to enter a colourful world.” Creating that colourful world was challenging, so Ann invited interior designer Katie Peck from Kurio to lend an eye. “I knew what colours I liked but didn’t know how to put them together. Katie set up a Pinterest page, and we started pinning colours. I was pinning a lot of navy and lighter blue tones, and golds and mustard. I do like yellow – it makes me happy.” Ann’s colour choices for her and Matt’s former home were “a lot less daring”, with Resene Haystack a favoured neutral, but she wanted the colours in this one, which the couple bought more than a decade ago, to be “a lot more adventurous”. Despite her love of paint, the home’s timber features were never going to see a paintbrush. “I love the look and warmth of the wood and how it glows against the colour.” Katie readily accepted Ann’s invitation. “I love that she was so brave. People can find it hard to be different without solid direction from someone like a designer. It’s hard to be sure they’re making the right decisions. But if someone says: ‘That’s great,

Trust a Resene Eco.Decorator to do your job just right! When it comes to your decorating projects it helps to know you’ve got the right painter for the job as well as the right paint. let’s do it’ they feel more confident.” Client and designer had plenty of wall space upon which to enjoy their adventure as Ann and Matt – with Katie’s help as an interior designer – reconfigured most of the house. They opened the kitchen into the living room, installed sliding doors, closed off openings, shifted a hallway and added a walk-in wardrobe to Ann and Matt’s bedroom, along with a small but perfectly formed ensuite bathroom. The wall in the upstairs hallway was moved and is now curved, elegantly embracing the ensuite inside the curve. Ann and Katie (with a veto vote from Matt, who had to be convinced about the yellow) have created a colourful family home that’s happy and playful, making inventive pairings within Resene’s vast colour palette. It caught the attention of the judges at the Resene Total Colour Awards, winning the Resene Total Colour Maestro – Residential Interior Award.

Ann is reluctant to pick a favourite colour – or room. As a mother-of-three (Sarah, 18, James, 15, and Olivia, 12), it’s possibly impossible to single out a most beloved. But – if you were to press her – maybe the kitchen, with its mustardy sunflower yellow walls in Resene Thumbs Up, contrasted against the cabinetry in Resene Possessed. “I originally wanted yellow tiles as a splashback with white walls, but I couldn’t find any to suit. So, we flipped it to have yellow walls and white tiles, which are much easier to find,” says Ann. In the dining room, which can be open to, or closed off from, the kitchen, the walls are painted in Resene Trojan, a few shades lighter than Resene Possessed. It is a technique Katie replicated in other parts

of the home. For example, she used Resene Unwind upstairs in the children’s bathroom, complemented by Resene Paris White, a few steps – and a few shades – away in the adjoining hallway. “I like to use slightly different hues to talk back to each other throughout a home by using a colour in one room that links to another space in a way that might be less intense,” says Katie. Likewise, the downstairs toilet is Resene Biscay, a beautiful dark and stormy blue that links to Resene Blue Night and the complementary blue tiles in the couple’s ensuite bathroom. Both are deep navy blues that make the antique gold fixtures shine. Katie says she’s never had a problem finding a colour to suit from the Resene range, and, as most of Ann’s preferences were in the

blue palette, her job was made even easier. “Resene has a particularly great range of blues.” One of Ann’s beloved blues surrounds her in her favourite place to relax on her living room couch, curled up and cosy but uplifted by Resene Streetwise, a warm and gentle teal that tones down the kitchen’s vibrant Resene Thumbs Up. She loves taking in those gorgeous colours or resting her eyes on Resene Paris White, a gentle marine green in the stairway. “I look at these colours around me, and I love them all. They reflect my personality, and they make me happy. “They make this a warm and welcoming place to be.” Design Kate Peck, Kurio www.kurio.co.nz Words Lee-Anne Duncan Images Helen Bankers

From holiday home to seaside When Miriam and Ian Potts decided their beach bach at Pāpāmoa could be their future retirement home, they knew they needed to capitalise on the view. “We’d owned the house for years so we had an idea of what would work,” says Miriam. “We wanted to flip the living spaces to upstairs to be able to see the ocean. “I suggested a second lounge and since the ceilings were so high, Ian came up with the idea of a mezzanine. It was a brilliant use of space – and even though we’re on a rear section, we can now see over the front house to the sea.” “This was a renovation where we’d stripped the original 1990s house right back to the concrete pad and lower floor framing, so the mezzanine pushed the budget out

a little,” says builder Jimmy Dow, co-owner of Coast NZ. “We encourage clients to be smart with their spending and this was one of their highlights, so we figured out how to make it happen. Dylan Batenburg, the architectural designer, did an amazing job adding his creative flair.”

Mezzanine “Miriam and Ian wanted somewhere to sit and relax so the mezzanine was a great idea,” says Dylan Batenburg, director of Coalesce Architecture. “It’s given them a cozy nook with an amazing view and it certainly adds ‘wow’ factor.” It’s just one of many clever design features that makes the newly renovated house stand out. “The cladding needed to be easy care and robust enough for a seaside property but also visually

stunning. The white Axon paneling with black negative spaces and pops of vertical cedar all the way up to the roofline really make it look smart,” says Jimmy. “It has sharp angles that look really cool. It’s not your average box, it’s a house you would stop on the street to look at.” “The windows give the appearance of size,” says Miriam. “Our home’s not huge, but we have people commenting that it looks modern and spacious.” “The homeowners wanted sunshine and light,” says Dylan. “So we raked the ceiling, pushed out the front of the house and added full height glazing and skylights. It also has internal angles on the ceiling that add interest. I loved that Miriam and Ian were designing a home that they wanted to live in rather than focusing on possible future owners.”

show-stopper!

The three bedrooms and laundry are on the ground floor. Miriam and Ian futureproofed the house by installing a lift and opted for practical design features like a scullery.

Entertaining space “The kitchen always looks tidy,” says Miriam. “My husband is the cook, so he wanted a great entertaining space. We also used a photo he took on the beach looking towards the Mount as the backsplash which gets lots of comments from visitors. We love that it’s something personal but not too personal. It suits the house beautifully.” Coast NZ is a tight-knit team of around 16 with Stu taking the reins as project manager once the design is rubberstamped. “Stuey is one of our most valuable assets,” says Jimmy. “He keeps everything on track and on budget. Renovating a home can be a rollercoaster of emotions but Stu never stresses. Everything is fixable.” “I honestly can’t fault anything Coast NZ did,” says Miriam. “Stu is incredible. He’s all over everything and if he didn’t answer my call

straight away, he would get back to me quickly. “There was so much to organise I really don’t know how he does it and in such a polite way.” “The team from Coast NZ has a great energy and they build an amazing rapport with their clients,” says Dylan. “They’re honourable, easy to work with and never shy away from intricate or problematic renovations.”

Open book “We love working with Dylan. He listens to clients and works to their budget,” says Jimmy. “After all, there’s no point in designing a $1 million house if the budget’s only $500K. He has fantastic creative flair so he’s great to collaborate with.” Coast NZ believes in transparency and puts a lot of effort into building great relationships. “Ours is a small family business, so we love to invite clients to our home we built to show them what we do,” says Jimmy. “We’re an open book and that tends to put homeowners at ease. We’re honest and proud of the workmanship we bring to all our renovations.” Words Debbie Griffiths; Images (after) John Borren

A collaborative approach

Sean Wood of Creative Kitchens & Interiors.

When I call Sean Wood of Creative Kitchens & Interiors, he can’t talk. He’s mid-way through ‘cooking’ Yorkshire puddings and muffins with a client. He’s immersed in her world, learning how she likes to use a kitchen. “Our clients are everything to us,” says Sean, who has owned Creative Kitchens & Interiors for nine years but is equally proud the Greerton-based joinery manufacturing company is turning 40 next February. “Forty years in this industry is a big achievement. We’re a small joinery factory up against all the big boys and we come out on top every time...” Sean knows this is because Creative Kitchens & Interiors – renowned for hand-crafting the highest quality joinery and furniture – puts client first. But it’s more than that. Sean was ‘cooking’ to learn his newest client’s kitchen quirks, preferences, cooking style, how they use bench space and appliances – and, ultimately, how they want to use their new kitchen. With the research done Creative Kitchens & Interiors use their traditional craftsmanship, precision and detailing to make every piece by hand. They tackle all types of design, from classic to modern. And every step of the way – from idea, to design, to creation and installation – there is effective communication. “Most of our clients end up becoming close friends,” says Sean. “When I first sit down to have a discussion I don’t know them, but the conversation becomes that deep you end up ‘cooking’ with them.

NEW ZEALAND'S FAVOURITE AIR®

So it’s talking through the process, so where do you want to mix your ingredients...? “When you rang we’d got down to the fact the lady has two cutlery sets; her hand-me-down from family, and her everyday cutlery; and her husband’s asking her to put the two together. We’re like: ‘No – no, you don’t do that...So we’re going to do this...’ It is never: ‘I’m going to do this...’. It’s always ‘We’re’. By the time we left she was keeping her family cutlery separate.” The other ingredient that goes into crafting an award-winning business is Sean’s five staff. “Creative Kitchens & Interiors’ success is a mixture of the way we treat clients and the quality of the product crafted by our staff.” Sean describes trade qualified cabinet maker Karl Smith as “the jewel in the crown”. “He’s made joinery for various royal families, footballers, rock stars, Hollywood actors you name it...” Trade-qualified cabinet maker Kevin Radley began aged 15, and it’s still his passion. Derek McLoughlin is a qualified French polisher “who manages all finishes in-house, enabling us to ensure the best quality to completion”. Apprentice Jay Hodgson is working hard to get qualified, and new staffer Domhnall Mac Fhlannchadha has come from Ireland to spend his last eight months’ work experience, to complete his university qualification, with Creative Kitchens & Interiors. Sean is team leader with 39 years in the industry, bringing international experience and strong management. So come and ‘cook up’ a new kitchen with them today – and become part of the Creative Kitchens & Interiors Merle Cave family!

Maximise the space in any bathroom!

The decision to trust advice from the experts at Bay Bathroom Design & Build has paid off for Ohauiti resident Wayne Buchanan. He wanted a new look for his tired, outdated ensuite.

After

“I opted for a full renovation and completely changed the colour scheme,” says Wayne. “I was initially worried about the choices, but I like how it turned out very much.” “We didn’t have to shift any walls so there was no structural redesigning to do,” says Bay Bathroom general manager Emma Voyce. “Our focus was to open up the corner shower and modernise the room to better suit the space.”

Stunning contrast

Wayne visited the Bay Bathroom showroom for a product meeting to decide whether to go with either a green slatecoloured vanity or black. “In the end he decided to go with Bullet Black for the cabinetry and use a splash of Dulux Ohai as the colour on the walls. The ceiling and trims are Resene Alabaster,” says Emma. “All in all, those choices provided a stunning contrast throughout when paired with the black Italian Camp Glaze tiles.” The wall-to-wall tiled shower was an easy choice given the dimensions of the bathroom. “The large in-wall niche was levelled up with the LED light strip, which is such an easy upgrade with maximum effect,” says Emma. “The shower column we used here is an essential choice in a large tiled shower. You’d be missing an opportunity to go with just a slide shower. The column not only looks impressive, but it also gives you more options.”

Herringbone tiling

The biggest success in the bathroom is the herringbone tiling on the back wall. “Our tiler has absolutely dominated the layout here with perfection,” says Emma. “These layouts are exceptionally hard to achieve, especially when you are tiling a niche. The tile was a discontinued line and we snapped the last amount available in New Zealand. Wayne has been a joy to work with, and we are so happy with the final look of the bathroom.” Wayne admits he’s surprised but delighted by the final look. “Bay Bathrooms were great to deal with right from day one. They helped with colours, tile choices, and their plans helped merge what I wanted with what would work best in that space. It was great. “All the trades that worked on the transformation were amazing and I thank them all very much. My advice to anyone thinking about renovating is not to be scared to go outside of your comfort zone.” Debbie Griffiths
