Therearethreecategories–localpets (opentochildren13orunder),local peopleandlocalplaces,whichareboth opentoallages,buthavetwoagegroups.

Thecompetitionisavariationonthe themethathasbeenestablishedoverthe lasttwoEastereventsinTePukewhere TeAraKahikateapathwayhasbecomea gallery.Thisyear’sEastereventwillbeon April19.

Larsensaideachyeartherehad beenacreativecomponenttoEaster celebrationsandthisyearthatis photography.

Thefirstyear,large,decoratedEaster eggspepperedthewalkwayandinyear two,arangeofsculpturesdeemedthe bestentriesinacompetitionwerethe attractionsforthosewalkingorcycling thepathway.

Thistimethefinalistsinthelocal peopleandlocalplacessectionswillbe partofthePicturePerfectEasterTrail.

Theywillbeenlargedandprintedon aluminiumanddisplayedaroundthe walkway.Thefinalistsinthelocalpets categorywillbeplacedoneasels.

RossWilsonandhissixstrongteamofClydesdales willbeattheshow,taking passengersforridesonhis largewagon.

WilsonisaPongakawa dairyfarmerwhouses horsepowerratherthan tractorpowerformostof hisfarmwork.Itisalong standingfamilytradition.

“Mygreat-grandfatherhad themandI’vejustcarriedit on,”hesaid.

Wilsongrewuponadry stockfarminMorrinsville.

“Myoldmanhadhorses rightfromthedayIwasborn andweusedthemonthefarm prettymuchlikeatractor.

“Alotofpeopledoridethem –I’mnotbigfanofriding thembutwedotakethem downthebeachandthekids willgoforaride–butthey’re bredforpullingsothat’swhat y you do with them ”

For anything other than a few small jobs around the

farm,Rossuseshorses–he getsthecowsinwiththem picksupcalveswiththem andfeedsoutwiththemas wellasploughing,discing andharrowing.

Toolsofthetrade Hisequipmentincludes threehorseandtwohorse ploughs,asinglefurrowride onplough,fretsprayer,hay rakeanddisc.

Hesaidthelackofengine noisealsobenefitshiscows, makingthemmoreatease.

“Everyone’sgotahobby andthisismyhobbybut I’vemadeitwork.“It’sjust anenjoymentthingforme,” hesaid.

He’sbeenonhiscurrent farmforalmosttwoyears.

“I’vebeendoingthis for16,17yearsandused [horses]oneveryfarmI’ve beenon.Imakesuretheydo ajobtoearntheirkeep.”

Untilrecently,Wilsonhad boughthorsesandtrained thembuthasnowstarted breedingg.

“I bought young ones and horses that have been

untouched,youngfoals,and gotthemworkingandstarted themfromthere,”hesaid.

“I’vehadafewthatcould havebeennasty,butit’sjust workingwiththem,consistent work.Ialwayssaythere’sno suchthingasabadhorse.

“ ey are just like people, some learn quickly and

someareslowlearners–exactlylike people,excepttheydon’tanswer back.

“They’veallgotdifferent temperaments–wedoalotofwork withthemsoit’slikeanything,alot oftraininggoesinbeforeyouhead outofthegate.”

Wilsonwillsoonbeabletohavean eight-horseteam–theonlyonein theNorthIslandhebelieves.

“I’vegotamarehavingafoalin Aprilanditwilljustrunbesideher whenshe’sworking,justtogetusedto it,thenI’llhaveaneight-horseteam–theonlyoneintheNorthIsland.

“I’mnotintoshowingthem–not reallyintothat.FormeI’mhappy withmyhorses,they’renotperfect, butI’mhappywiththem.”

Whilethisyear’sA&PShowwill featuresClydesdalesintheshow ring,Wilsonwillbetherejustto giveridesanditwon’tbehisfirst rodeo.“IgotoKumeū,Clevedon, Tauranga,nowTePuke,aboutthree showsintheWaikato–Ialwaysgo toMorrinsville,thewaterfestivalin Putāruru.”Outsideofthat,hehas takenhishorsestoweddingsand funerals.

“Ineverplannedondoinganyof that–I’vejustgothorsesbecause that’swhatIwantedtodo.Forme, drivingaroundapaddockandfeeding

outtothecowsiswhatIwantedto do,becausethat’smorefun.”

Takingthehorsesoffthefarm startedwhenhewasaskedtotake themtoafuneralItgrewfromthere intootherfunctionswherepeople “justwantedmethere”.“Itpays goodmoney,butlikeanything, there’salotofworkyou’vegotto putinbeforeyoucangotothose.” Healsoplanstoonedaytakehis horsestoFieldaysatMysteryCreek. “Iwillgetthere,buteverything takestimeandplanning.”Another long-termgoalistocreateatourist business.

Butfirst,hehadanimportanteventto attend–aBOPEducationTrustscholarship function.

AustenisthesonofAndrewTargettand AnnemarieCambieandisthefirstinhis familytoforgeacareerinwine.However,it willbeafabulousadditiontotheskillswithin hisfoodiefamilywhere,hisdad–achef–is kingofthekitchen.

Targettsaidhisprofoundinterestinplants andhorticulturedatesbacktospendingtime inthegardenwithhisgrandparentswhowere oncelarge-scaleflowergrowers.

Watchingplantsthrive,beingrewarded withproduceandthenworkingwithplants thatcanproduceaproductsuchaswineisall enthralling,hesaid.

Hiscareerhopesinvolveexperiencing winemakingaroundtheworld,aswellasin NewZealand.

“IwouldliketotraveltoEuropeandlearn traditionalmethodsofwinemakingtomerge withsomeofthemoreadvancedscientific techniquesthatarepresentlyutilised.Iwould liketoestablishmyownvineyardinNew Zealand–achemicalfreeone,asIdonot believeintheuseofchemicalsontheland.”

Wehavealsohadcallstothreemotorvehiclecrashes andtwomedicalcallstoassistStJohn.

Therewasacallresultingfromsmokecomingfroma streetlampandtwovegetationfires.Oneofthesewas asignificantfireatMangatawatowhichourtanker responded.

Fivefalsealarmsroundedoutthecallsduringthepast fortnight.

Lastweekweusedournewshedatourtrainingwhen wepracticedwithsomeoftherescuegearwedon’tuse allthatoften.

Weusedourairbagtoraiseourvintagefiretruck,

usingcribbingtokeepitsafe.

Anairbagusesacompressedbreathingapparatusair cylindertoinflateandcanliftheavyitems–ourscan liftupto20tonnes.

OurHolmatroVstrutsenableustostabiliseavehicle onitssidebyanchoringtothechassis,withstruts angledouttotheground,securedbyratchetload straps.Thiscreatesastabletriangletoensurethevehicle can’trollfurtherwhileweareworkingtoremove trappedpatients.

WealsousedourTurfur,whichisaratchetcable winchonahandlevercapableofpullingheavyloads slowlyandcarefullyasrequired.

SincelateNovemberwehavebeenpostinga fortnightlyMeettheCrewMondaypostonour Facebookpagetoletourcommunitygettoknowa littlemoreaboutourfirefighters,whogiveuptheir valuabletimetohelpourcommunity.
